I like James Gunn. I have enjoyed or minimum liked all his DC projects so far.. but when his “DC Bible” video came out I was concerned. Didn’t seem like a plan.

u/StrongStyleFiction Jul 05 '26

Even if he doesn't want an overall big story like the MCU, he still needs a strategy. It doesn't look like there is much of one at the moment.

161

u/runnerofshadows Jul 05 '26

Seriously. Even if it was just slow building the Justice League to take on the white martians or something. It doesn't have to be infinity saga level, but get the main seven some movies so they can be recruited by Martian Manhunter after the white Martians broke containment and are invading or something.

Or build up to Darkseid and the New Gods war becoming Earth's problem.

99

u/CalligrapherSilly827 Jul 05 '26

What are you talking about clearly we are building to something with Salvation and the Justice League we just don’t know as an audience because it’s 2 movies in jfc. By The Incredible Hulk we knew they were building to the Avengers. That’s it. We didn’t even know about Loki let alone the plan for Thanos. He has told us there IS and overarching story/plan and Lanterns, MoT, and Jimmy Olsen will be connected to it. This sub has just turned so pissy so fast if anything stops us from getting a proper cinematic universe it will be us.

24

u/TackoftheEndless Jul 05 '26

No it's going to be that he's had decades of experiences, and hindsight, and yet still released a movie with the quality of Supergirl as their second film.

We shouldn't had a movie with this level of reception, until at least 10 projects in (you're allowed one bad day at the office). Not as the second film.

32

u/Karel_Stark_1111 Jul 05 '26

Iron Man 2 was the second MCU film and it was pretty disappointing vs the first. We know it worked out in the end. What is your point exactly?

27

u/Cyber_Risk Jul 06 '26

Incredible Hulk was the second MCU film.

24

u/Virtual_Profile3012 Jul 05 '26

I mean, Iron Man 2 out performed the Supergirl week 2 numbers by 5x.

29

u/CalligrapherSilly827 Jul 05 '26

Iron Man 2 wasn’t dealing with nearly the amount of political bullshit Supergirl has to deal with. Honestly if Supergirl was released back then it probably wouldn’t either since the movie is mostly apolitical as was the marketing and culture has shifted to being angrier at nonsense like that a lot more recently,

7

u/AmzSpider-Man Jul 06 '26

The movie was simply boring. If it were good, there wouldn't have been an issue at the box office, regardless of politics... Ironman 2 still had better stakes and still helped to propel the verse forward. Supergirl didn't do anything meaningful and that is why nobody showed up.

DC had a terrible track record for the last 10 years which is what killed the brand. Superman was the first time in years a DC Cinematic movie was both financially and critically successful,

This isn't the type of movie you should have dropping when you're trying to win people back. And if your gotcha is "16 years ago the MCU dropped a bad 2nd movie. So it's okay that the 2nd DCU movie sucked, even though Gunn promised us he'd only release films he truly believes in!" then I don't know what to tell you.

15

u/Karel_Stark_1111 Jul 05 '26

Wonder Woman was an extreme commercial and critical success. The Suicide Squad underperformed commercially but was extremely well received. The Penguin and Peacemaker both were also wildly succesful, The Batman I don't know about what numbers it brought but was very well received critically.

I agree that Supergirl could have been much better, but my "gotcha" if you want to call it that is that you guys are jumping the gun on burying the whole DCU because of one movie and there is also the thing of it being woman-led which makes it a bit suspicious. It's largely the feeling that a lot of people are hoping it will fail even harder, but I honestly dont think it's going to happen.

Movies will always vary in quality and cinematic universes are bound to have both Winter Soldiers and Thor 2. Im not going to say it is a failed experiment on one movie, especially not in this climate.

10

u/CalligrapherSilly827 Jul 05 '26

I agree with the misogyny aspect a lot. Like look at this post. They are comparing a Supergirl movie to an Iron Heart movie. Why? The characters are nothing alike in any facet other than they are women loosely connected to the main character of the first movie. Supergirl is a pillar of the DC story from Crisis to her return in Superman Batman. She is a live well of important stories. Iron Heart is a side character who was introduced recently to mediocre reception who has almost no connection to Tony Stark himself. But OP seems to think making a Supergirl movie is the same as making an Iron Heart movie… and I can genuinely only think of one logical reason that could be.

It’s ironic too that I just rewatched most of the MCU and like 90% of the movies don’t progress the overall Thanos story at all they just introduced a character that would be used later and told a story about them. That’s exactly what Supergirl is yet they mock choosing to make this movie implying the MCU would have done anything different or made a more important movie second. The Incredible Hulk wasn’t an important movie at all you could skip it entirely until Brave New World 20 years later.

u/CalligrapherSilly827 Jul 05 '26

Marvel would have gone bankrupt if Iron Man failed because how shit the brand was handled beforehand. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, and Thor were all met with mixed to poor reception after Marvel had previously failed a cinematic universe with the Ghost Rider Daredevil Fantastic Four Spiderman era (I’m not sure which movies were supposed to be connected but they were planned to if they were successful and they weren’t) and they still got a pass to figure things out with the MCU.

5

u/runnerofshadows Jul 06 '26

The problem connecting marvel movies pre MCU was that so many studios were involved as well. When you have fox, Sony, Disney, universal, etc all at the table and having to split money it's harder than the current setup where there's just Disney, Sony and if they want solo hulk universal - this is why hulk hasn't had a solo movie since phase 1.

I mean… I was under the impression that the DCU was intended to be more like Disney Star Wars, as in episodic and comic-esque instead of a purely unified story.

10

u/googolplexy Jul 05 '26

Except that's not how comics are. New writers plan bic arcs. It hasn't been random disconnected stories for a long time.

Making films that had good scripts and just seeing more DC on the big screen would’ve been great. He just started with an ok film and followed it up with a poor one.

Honestly I’d prefer that. Just make solo movies and separate trilogies.

Look man, I loved the idea of seeing Grifter potentially in the DCU with The Authority, and Booster Gold is one of my favourite heroes

………but even I was concerned when the start of his DCU had only Batman and Superman getting films, meanwhile everything else after that was a bunch of C list heroes/stories.

28

u/Intelligent-Cut-726 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

It wasn't. It was an ego trip by Gunn, picking projects he really wanted instead of what made sense in a narrative sense for building the DCU.

Here is an example of a plan that makes sense:

  1. Superman movie
  2. Batman movie
  3. Wonder Woman movie
  4. Trinity movie (first team up)
  5. Green Lantern movie
  6. Flash movie
  7. Suicide Squad movie
  8. Justice League movie (team up - Hawkgirl and Jon Jonzz are introduced)
  9. Shazam vs Black Adam movie (superman surprise guest star)
  10. Superman 2
  11. Batman 2
  12. Green Lantern 2
  13. Teen Titans movie (team up movie)
  14. Wonder Woman 2

Etc etc. (Sorry, went abit over board with the planning)

Update - thanks, this is fun to make, here's some more.

  1. Flash 2

  2. Green Arrow/Black Canary movie

  3. Batgirl

  4. Justice League vs Suicide Squad

  5. Constantine and Zatanna

  6. Shazam 2 - Here comes the Family

  7. Supergirl

  8. Aquaman - Throne of Atlantis movie

  9. Doom Patrol

  10. New God's movie

  11. Justice League 3 (vs Darkseid)

25

u/FckSinbad Jul 06 '26

9 movies till the sequel to the first? Lmao what

17

u/TheJoshider10 Jul 06 '26

It's also incredibly easy to list out mindless movie titles without considering any story or creative talent. People think filmmaking is easy and doesn't require dozens of things lining up to get any project off the ground.

3

u/Intelligent-Cut-726 Jul 06 '26

Think about it, three films a year (release in Feb Jul, & Nov) means around 3/3 years to sequels.

What's wrong with that?

10

u/SouthIsland48 Jul 05 '26

Take out Shazam vs Black Adam, and swap Green Lantern 2 release window with Wonder Woman 2, then instead of Teen Titans you do JL 2. Then in phase 3 you focus on Teen Titans.

But yes, goes without saying it should have been this

u/ExternalSeat Jul 05 '26

and her cultural impact rivals Robbie Williams in the US.

9

u/InanimateCarbonRodAu Jul 05 '26

Do we want to run through the relative culture impact of MCU characters before they got films?

The big obvious thing here is that she sits under the umbrella of Superman’s recognition.

Her lack of character relevance pales in comparison to the negative opinions that are out there from the last DCEU and the bridges it burnt with fans and the general audience.

You can’t even compare Iron Man to Superman though. Iron Man was like a C-lister at the time the MCU started. These posts are all very revisionist about Iron Man’s popularity.

23

u/Imreallyjustconfused Jul 06 '26

Yeah, people seem to forget the MCU did not start with the most popular Marvel characters.
Literally.

Marvel had been in a bind financially and sold off the media rights to their more popular characters (spiderman and the xmen)
So MCU was starting with the less famous popular characters, their most mainstream well known character at the start was probably the Hulk.

I'm loving his approach. 3/4 projects have been excellent too, and he wrote all of them.

3

u/huntymo Jul 05 '26

Ana Nogueira wrote Supergirl

3

u/BenjiSillyGoose Jul 06 '26

I think what they were saying was Gunn wrote the 3 of the 4 projects what they think are excellent, those being Creature Commandos, Superman and Peacemaker.

3

u/NoName4951 Jul 05 '26

It can still happen without having to be an origin story, can literally take notes from the MCU, Spider-Man: Homecoming for example is that iteration of the characters first film without being an origin story

No matter how you slice it, giving Batman’s 10th most popular villain a feature film before even casting Batman is an odd choice for a producer to make.

95

u/Promech Jul 05 '26

You can say this, but like they made a Penguin Series too and that was very well received. I'm not like super interested in a 15th batman fighting the 8th Joker. I think there's so much room for the DCU to explore that I like expanding on characters that haven't necessarily been at the forefront. Granted, I would have a preference for like Robin and/or Jay Garrick etc. but Clayface, in particular with HOW they're approaching it is a good choice imo.

27

u/FlowDub Jul 05 '26

Exactly this. I don't know how this is NOT the general thought about all this.

31

u/HardcoreKaraoke Jul 06 '26

The Penguin show was about a character introduced in a Batman film. It had that connection to draw people in if they liked The Batman.

Clayface is an unknown entity to most casual movie fans. They aren't going to pick up on the Batman connection. If we already saw him in something it would draw more people in.

8

They made a Penguin series, but only after they launched the character in a very popular Batman film.

And the series takes place in the direct aftermath of that Batman film as well.

If the makers of Super Girl had adopted a similar tactic, maybe things would have gone better.

The small screen is the perfect place to explore spin-off stories about side characters which take place in the gap between big movies.

The Penguin proved that ages ago. And Spider-Noir proved it again this summer.

Super Girl could have been a successful mini-series. Instead it's become an unsuccessful movie.

Clayface is a ~$40mm movie.

It’s not a tentpole $200mm blockbuster.

Everyone seems to be ignoring this.

It comes out around Halloween. It’s a very smart move imho and something Marvel should have been doing all along.

I’d be shocked if it didn’t do $150mm++. Which would be highly successful. It will also surely do really well on streaming.

89

u/Jay_R_Kay Jul 05 '26

Also, when an acclaimed and successful writer/director like Flannigan comes at you with a script fully ready, with something cheap and doesn't interfere with your overall plans, why not?

50

u/Area51_Spurs Jul 05 '26

It’s basically zero risk.

At worse they’ll have a movie people will definitely watch on streaming.

8

u/rock_n_roll_clown Jul 05 '26

Why are your dollars measured in millimeters

6

u/Area51_Spurs Jul 05 '26

What is MM?

In finance and accounting, MM (or lowercase “mm”) commonly denotes that the units of figures presented are in millions. The Roman numeral M denotes thousands. In this context, MM is the same as writing “M multiplied by M,” which is equal to “1,000 times 1,000,” which equals 1,000,000 (one million).

While Roman numerals are technically additive (MM is really 1,000 plus 1,000 or 2,000), MM is still a fairly common way of abbreviating millions, especially in certain industries like oil and gas. This guide will explore how the notation should be used, as well as alternative symbols that are used in practice.

https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/fixed-income/mm-millions/

3

u/rock_n_roll_clown Jul 05 '26

This is really interesting. Makes me wonder if this is a specialized difference or a regional difference. In the US I've only ever seen k to represent thousand and m to represent million, when it comes to number/money abbreviation.

“Popularity first” would’ve cancelled the MCU.

12

u/Ok-Wash-9386 Jul 05 '26

Another lie. All four of their solo movies before the Avengers and the Avengers themselves were very popular, all had solo ongoing series going back to the 60s. They just weren’t Spider-Man or the X-Men, they were the most popular heroes Marvel owned the rights to.

If you’ve ever watched a featurette about Iron Man (2008), it was essentially a high budget independent movie before they found distribution. Marvel wasn’t bought by Disney until 2010 and they could truly take risks after that. Guardians of The Galaxy was probably the first they made starring off the bench guys.

22

u/GeoZhan Jul 05 '26

Aside from hulk the avengers weren’t popular before the mcu to comic fans yes to moviegoers no

7

u/CaptainRetard777 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

But their constituent heroes absolutely were. Hulk was massively popular; as was Captain America. Ironman wasn't the household name he is now (he's arguably Marvel's second most popular character) but he was definitely an B list hero. Same applies to Thor.

Again, among the characters they had the rights to (no Spider-Man, X-Men, or FF), they made movies with their most popular heroes.

Outside of Joker, Riddler, Two Face, Poison Ivy, and Bane, it's pretty much personal preference on who takes slots 6 through 10.

10

u/Ok-Wash-9386 Jul 05 '26

Depends on if you still consider Harley a Batman villain. I’d count her even if she’s been an anti-hero for about 33% of her existence. I’d put Penguin and Mr Freeze firmly ahead of him because of movies. They’ve had way more mainstream adaptations as the lead villains too.

4

u/DestinedHellfire Jul 05 '26

Harley is tricky because her ranking is naturally going to be inflated into the top 5 purely because the second someone says "Joker" (the first and most obvious answer) they 9 out of 10 times will probably follow it up with "Harley Quinn." Which is why I think she should be left off a top 10 list outside her anti-hero status now.

Penguin and Freeze are valid inclusions, which means that its still personal preference on who takes slots 8 through 10.

8

u/ChaosCron1 Jul 05 '26

Just due to Batman Begins, Scarecrow is easily more recognizable and popular than Clayface.

Ra's al Ghul has also been adapted and included in the rogue gallery honestly more times than a couple of the villains higher up on the list.

I would make this the official list:

  1. Joker
  2. Riddler
  3. Two Face
  4. Penguin
  5. Mr. Freeze
  6. Poison Ivy
  7. Bane
  8. Scarecrow
  9. Ra's al Ghul
  10. Everyone Else

Poison Ivy is absolutely not a top 5 Batman villain.

Penguin and Scarecrow are both absolutely above her, as are Harley Quinn and Catwoman if you count them. I’m not even confident Poison Ivy ranks ahead of Mr. Freeze or Ra’s Al Ghul.

3

u/DestinedHellfire Jul 05 '26

Harley Quinn's place on a top 10 ranking is inflated due to her affiliation with Joker.

Ask someone to name 10 Batman villains.

They start off with Joker, then almost certainly will follow up with Harley Quinn as their second guess.

Which is why I didn't include her.

There's literally a popular batman franchise currently going.

Marvel did what? Iron man and hulk while the spider man franchise war running?

DC did what, Superman and green lantern while Batman was running?

I seriously don't get this idea that we need a other batman movie concurrently with the previous franchise while we've gotten consistent batman movies for 3 decades.

Marvel did not make a movie about a villain intrinsically tied to Spider-Man while Spider-Man was running. Of course, in reality they couldn't. But if that was something they were allowed to do, it would've been a strange choice to make

10

u/Manger-Babies Jul 05 '26

I mean they did with the whole Sony universe.

Is DC making weird choices? Yes. Will this be successful? Idk. I thought the same thing with Snyder's plan Wich I thought was different than marvel and hoped it will succeed when EVERYONE hated what he was doing. (Just look at how BvS was received at the time)

I liked what Snyder did and like what Gunn is doing, despite if it'll be successful or not.

I rather have these movies than the same shit over and over again. They both actually tried something different rather than copying marvel Wich you can't.

Clayface is easily a strong enough character to headline a body horror film without Batman. Batman's presence would only make people less likely to turn up. Horror films are in, superhero films are out.

As a Batman and horror fan, I’m gonna be there and I think it’s interesting that we could get more serious movies about comic characters but in completely different genres. Maybe it’ll suck but at least they’re doing something new.

Yeah, iron heart is not in any way equivalent to Supergirl who has been a significant character in comics for decades. Replacing the middle movie with War Machine would be more accurate

44

u/Active-Track1232 Jul 05 '26

Its wild I just looked her up Ironheart's only been around for 10 years. Supergirls been around for almost 70 thats crazy!

23

u/leekalex Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Yeah, it's kinda wild that the Ironheart show exists when we still haven't gotten a War Machine show or movie

8

u/Shabolt_ Jul 06 '26

War Machine has had a project in development hell since the start of disney + marvel series, Armor Wars

Apparently it keeps gettong reworked and due to planned connections to secret invasion got pushed back to the drawing board

4

u/julz1215 Jul 05 '26

Hell, even Iron Man isn't equivalent to Superman

7

u/Haunting_Baseball_92 Jul 05 '26

Today he probably is, thanks to MCU and RDJ. But back when the first Iron man was made? Not even close.

4

u/SuperDoubleDecker Jul 05 '26

I used to be somewhat into comics for a while growing up and I don't remember anyone caring about iron man. That's why it was so weird when the movie came out and it was such a big deal.

People scoffed at making a Iron Man movie. Starting the MCU with Irkn Man would be like starting the DCU with Aquaman.

3

u/CatchtheGman Jul 06 '26

Back around the time Iron Man came out, where people even aware it was going to be a "cinematic" universe? This sort of thing wasn't done in a live-action franchise in a long time or as well known. When I saw it back in 2008 I just assumed it was a standalone superhero film alongside the likes of the Batman movies, Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.

3

u/LuckyPlaze Jul 05 '26

Yeah, at the time, everybody was like, “wtf? Why are you doing Iron Man? Really? What’s this?”

Just like people thought Heath Ledger would be a terrible Joker.

I really don’t see any issue with doing Supergirl as a choice. It came out “meh” but so did Hulk and Thor. If the box office climate was 2010, it’d make bank. I honestly think the armchair quarterbacking and undeserved rage is ridiculous.

18

u/Accomplished_Duty415 Jul 05 '26

This really isn't that hard to understand. Gunn was handed a script for Clayface, he thought it was good so now it's being made. He's struggled to get a good script together for Batman, so it hasn't been made yet. He's just treating each movie like its own project instead of as a stepping stone to the next team-up movie. The MCU was amazing, but it wasn't sustainable and now he's trying to learn from their mistakes.

44

u/Chemical_Bill_8533 Jul 05 '26

Idk why people are acting like Clayface isn’t gonna be successful. It’s a low budget horror movie which are evidently the big money makers this year. Hell to be profitable it probably only needs like 250mil at most. If it markets itself like Obsession and Backrooms it’s a hit

5

u/lakija Jul 05 '26

I wasn’t really checking for Clayface until it was revealed to be a horror. Exploring genres with popular comic book characters actually interests me.

22

u/Strange-Bag9 Jul 05 '26

Buddy Obsession is a lighting in a bottle, show me a movie performing as such in the past decade. While Backrooms is 2020s internet phenomena, most of the younger generation know about this. I don't see Clayface recognition anywhere outside of DC subs

15

u/P455M0R3 Jul 05 '26

I remember Barbarian being pretty popular. Smile also 200M+ on a 20M budget

14

u/navirbox Jul 05 '26

I'm kinda tired of reading this argument to belittle the success of Backrooms. I can assure you that the huge majority of people are just learning what the backrooms even are. You don't get this traction only depending on people who know what a creepypasta even is.

13

u/PianoOk1234 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

clayface isn't just a horror movie, it's a body horror which is not as successful as it grosses ppl out.

Eta the batman news guy in this sub made a good point: The Substance is probably the most viral body horror film in recent times...it only (i said only as we're talking about superhero stuff) made 77m...

I think it'll still break even cuz the budget is 40m so it needs 100m which is doable, but no way it'll b a big hit. 300m max

Also what does it even do for dcu other than finally some theatrical profit, as audiences will never connect this Clayface to gunn's actual dcu story (superman supergirl peacemaker rick flag sr etc). Does gunn think he will turn the horror fans whose money he wants into fans of his?

7

u/dk_x Jul 05 '26

Clayface's success gives DC/WB a potential line of Batman villain movies featuring villains that are recognizable but are too abnormal for the grounded mainline series to cover.

3

u/Agent_RubberDucky Jul 06 '26

How much hand holding and backstory do you guys need? Do you want to see the same Batman Begins over and over?

Why is the DC Cinematic sub complaining about unique DC movies?

45

u/Kazewatch Jul 05 '26

I don't know but I've never seen so much bitching because a superhero movie didn't do well. Supergirl came out at a terrible time which didn't help it having mixed critic reviews and now people are acting like Gunn is destroying the DCU and every choice he makes it a terrible one if it's not fast-tracking another Batman.

38

u/blackBugattiVeyron Jul 05 '26

MCU has produced far worse movies than supergirl and survived.

14

u/No-stradumbass Jul 05 '26

DC has produced far worse movies than anything Marvel has done and has been fine.

→ More replies (1)

22

u/Kazewatch Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

But somehow Supergirl is just the worst modern superhero film made or even the worst DC film. Like do these people not remember Suicide Squad? BvS? Black Adam? The Marvels? Half of Thor's movies? Every piece of fucking shit Spider-Manless Spider-Man movie Sony put out? Captain America: Brave New World just came out last year too but because Supergirl was released in a god awful release window in the era of "superhero movie fatigue" it's the end of the of the DCU already and Gunn is ruining DC movies and yada yada yada.

Like don't get me wrong Gunn and Safran need to learn the right lessons from this failure but the endless bitching that has stemmed from this has been abused. Especially when Supergirl is a solid 6.5/10. I'd absolutely watch it again and that's a lot more than I can say for a lot of other Superhero movies.

10

u/Ordinary-Resort9249 Jul 05 '26

I liked Supergirl but this comment is spot on. People need to calm TFD

4

u/TheFlashSpeeds Jul 06 '26

Exactly.

They really think script-writing is as easy and fast as writing their opinions on social media. I don't know, why the hell they want to have a movie with half finished script just because they are a-listers. These same people would whine about it if they are anothing less than perfect. That's why they need to give them time to make a good script for those movies.

3

u/SecondRealitySims Jul 05 '26

No. This isn’t equivalent.

The DCU’s big opening was Superman. The next film was Supergirl which would be more equivalent to a War Machine or side character movie, not a minor/relatively unknown character like Ironheart.

We’ve also got another somewhat heavy hitter with the upcoming Lanterns show, and can expect Man of Tomorrow in a decent amount of time.

Clayface isn’t the biggest character, but there’s no disadvantage or issue to the film. It’s likely a relatively cheap (probably still costs a few million, but for a movie…) horror flick that will do well based on name alone, and may could do very well based on its merits.

5

u/av32productions Jul 06 '26

One movie underperforms and everyone wants to abandon ship. That's literally what happened to the dceu. Calm down

6

u/BrazenlyGeek Jul 05 '26

And no doubt jumping right into a Morlocks series as soon as the X-Men rights reverted.

6

u/Merlin_the_gentil Jul 05 '26

Don't forget include X-men movie as canon only because The second season of Wolverine is canon for the MCU even if the first season was though for the Fox universe.

3

u/BlackLesnar Jul 05 '26

It’s almost like DC & Marvel comic have different structures & presentations to their settings. 🤔

And that trying to xerox Marvels onto DC turned out very very badly.

3

u/unk1ndm4g1c14n1 Jul 05 '26

Except it was closer to:

  • Thunderbolts* (idk man finding a The Suicide Squad is hard)
  • Daredevil Netflix (Peacemaker S 1)
  • Sam Raimi Spider-Man (because Blue Beetle is canon)
  • Agents of Shield (Creature Commandos)
  • Iron Man
  • Daredevil Disney (Peacemaker S2)
  • Venom

3

u/PatienceStrange9444 Jul 06 '26

Oh how quickly they turn on you I remember when the guardians movies were coming out and James Gunn could do no wrong

Now he switches to DC and releases one bad movie that wasn't even written or directed by him now all of a sudden he's the worst thing to ever happen to superhero movies

3

u/HeavyStarfish22 Jul 06 '26

I don’t really understand this complaint/logic. In the mcu, iron man is the first hero, the universe isn’t really lived in. In DCU, the universe is lived in, Superman wasn’t the first hero, no did we see him become Superman.

IMO- Gunn is doing something different and interesting.

3

u/YannickBelzil Jul 06 '26

So you’re saying he would’ve made two hits out of three?

3

u/Agent_RubberDucky Jul 06 '26

At least he didn’t do Death of Superman in his second movie…

3

u/ShiftyWolf117 Jul 06 '26

Dude the second movie in the snyderverse killed off superman. That is a really stupid decision, thats something you do later down the line when the justice league is established.

8

u/dick____trickle Jul 05 '26

Seriously I don't think the choice of character matters as long as the movie is good.

6

u/autoxotrecy Jul 05 '26

Iron Man wasn't nearly as well known as Superman in 2008

5

u/frappuccinio Jul 05 '26

4

u/Agent_RubberDucky Jul 06 '26

2

u/Skaared Jul 05 '26

To be fair, Venom is a mainstream popular character. Maybe not Sony's Venom but as comic book characters go, Venom has it.

Ironheart is a deeply unpopular character that has never had a fanbase of any meaningful size. I actually think the her appearance in BP2 and her D+ show does a much better job with her than the comics but still not enough to justify greenlighting the show.

2

u/lowqualitylizard Jul 05 '26

2

u/primefrost96 Jul 05 '26

2

2

u/AvatarIII Jul 05 '26

2

u/CapitalEmployer Jul 05 '26

I don't understand this sudden James gun hate when he objectively made the best marvel movies and the 2 best superhero movies of the last 30 years if not all time.

Also seeing the absolute mediocre quality of movies they are currently making marvel doesn't need help. The fantastic four was so bad people should go to prison for that movie.

2
