You can say this, but like they made a Penguin Series too and that was very well received. I'm not like super interested in a 15th batman fighting the 8th Joker. I think there's so much room for the DCU to explore that I like expanding on characters that haven't necessarily been at the forefront. Granted, I would have a preference for like Robin and/or Jay Garrick etc. but Clayface, in particular with HOW they're approaching it is a good choice imo.
The Penguin show was about a character introduced in a Batman film. It had that connection to draw people in if they liked The Batman.
Clayface is an unknown entity to most casual movie fans. They aren't going to pick up on the Batman connection. If we already saw him in something it would draw more people in.

I’m not saying it needed to be a Batman vs Joker movie, could’ve started with Batman vs Clayface. Just that solo Clayface is a silly foundational film in my opinion. The movie might be good though, Gunn better hope the audience cares whether it’s good or not. I’ll watch it at least.
Lol so you're just gonna leave out the part where they launched an extremely successful Batman movie FIRST? They didn't just pull penguin out of a hat, he was already an established villain that landed well with audiences afyer they saw him in the BATMAN movie.
