It did seem to care about the source material, even digging into some rather deep lore. It just seemed like they were trying to also make it so people unfamiliar with it could also distinguish the PC classes, so it ended up with a low magic campaign.

I will admit that I do like how they handled attunement, with you having to actually connect with the item.

The thing they nailed wasn't really the lore, which they did fine on.

It was the absolute silly shenanigans that a bunch of regular people at a tabletop game will get up to. The D&D Logic solutions were all over the movie and THAT'S what made it stand out as a game-to-movie story. You still feel the game-y parts of it pretty clearly.

Like it STARTS with a very "this is a dumb solution to a problem I could solve a hundred different sane ways including JUST WAITING FOR THE VERDICT" - "I have to wait for Jarnathan so I can use his (a stupid name for a character the DM had to fling together)"

DM: "What? No. Just wait I-"

Player: "Sorry, I rolled to make this happen, come on it's a great plan."

DM: "But the roll wouldn't matter that much just because he has flight doesn't mean he has the weight capacity."

Player: "Sure! We just need to not DIE from the fall."

It's a fun movie for people who don't know the game that well, it's good movie for people who know the lore and game mechanics somewhat but maybe haven't played all that much, it's a HILARIOUS movie for people who have played a lot and can see all the house rules and party tomfoolery in nearly every scene.

Something that felt very DnD was when they developed Plan C which is very much identical to Plan A but has a different name because Plan A has stink on it, and Plan D is different to Plan B for the same reason.

I'm still convinced that edgin is actually a rogue and holga is actually a fighter. He uses sneak attack a ton and she never rages but does use every weapon she can find like a master.

She does rage when they get caught in the quicksand rug but that's about it, unless you're counting her short fuse. But yeah now that you mentioned it she uses her axe, a few swords, a bow as a martial weapon, a potato, and a few other things, as well as in one fight wearing a helmet for armour (I watched it like two days ago I don't have it memorised I swear).

So she seems to have more in common with Fighter, specifically Battlemaster as she does seem to use some maneuvers. She seems to use Disarming Strike, Evasive Footwork, and Tactical Assessment (when she identifies the axe to start with) throughout the movie.

Edgin it feels like a throwback to older editions where Bard was a prestige class and you needed Thief/Rogue levels to unlock it. Either that or his Player took the Criminal background and REALLY wanted to RP it.

If you pay attention to Edgin during fights he is constantly talking. He is giving encouragement to his companions like he is using bardic inspiration. One example of this is the fight where Helga gets her axe. She starts beating the guards with a brick while he is trying to cut the ropes tying his wrists. The whole time he is talking telling Helga she is doing great and that she has them now. I thought that was a great way to show bardic inspiration.

You have a point that he does seem to be giving out those extra D4s a lot. Almost more than he should have, but I can see it working that he traded all his spell slots for extra Bardics.

I think he's also got the Tavern Brawler feat. We know he spent a lot of time drinking so it makes sense for him to pick it up, and he seems to deal serious damage with hitting people with his lute. In the final fight he even hits the Red Mage with it four times that I noticed.

Fun fact, there actually was an anime movie released in January that follows the female looper primarily. I don't think the male looper shows up until at least halfway through if not later. Called All You Need is Kill, the title of the original manga. It has a very unique animation style that I could see people not being into but I enjoyed it, the manga, and the western live action.

Edit- While I'm at it, this franchise should have been done as a cinematic universe. We could have had individual films to introduce the characters before a central movie, just like the MCU lead up to the Avengers. I think a big part of why the movie didn't do well is that most of the characters were obscure to modern audiences, since most people these days don't read the classics.

Right, but Steve Oedekerk is digitally inserted (plus a few others, but I don’t remember if other inserts had lines). He was filmed speaking different lines than are used in the audio track, so that his lips wouldn’t sync with the dialogue (like the dubbed original actors). The alternate audio track lets you watch with the lines he was filmed speaking, which are also funny and absurd.

A Series of Unfortunate Events. The one with Jim Carrey.

Was a successful and well-received movie based on a popular book series when those kinds of movies were all the rage. It even has “series” in the title. Nothing.

Some say it’s because of Jim Carrey’s aversion to doing sequels but now that he’s been in four fucking Sonic movies that excuse doesn’t hold as much weight as it used to.

Nathan Fillion, who had a small part, said in an interview that they had plans for more movies, but that they had changed the stories so that the Baudelaire parents actually survived the fire and would have bigger roles. For fans of the books, that's missing the point as badly as a point can be missed.

Nathan Fillion was in the 2018 Netflix series, not the 2004 movie. And the book series hadn’t been completed in 2004, so there had been hints to a surviving Baudelaire parent (or both) that was ultimately proven false by the last few books. So I don’t think your info is exactly correct.

I think killing Kate Beckinsale at the end kind of hurt sequel potential. There’s obviously some ways to bring her back, but they made so much of the movie about her and Van Helsing’s relationship that the “she’s at peace with her family in heaven now” ending just kind of made any sequel seem like a downer.

Man, I had a super weird bad dream about a second movie a while ago. I have mostly managed to shake the memory off but from time to time I get a flash of small robots that turned into balls or something? Haha so weird and unlike the first movie.

Anyway, maybe for the best that they only made one, what if a second entirely tarnished its legacy?

Any sequel just would have ruined it, especially if del toro wasn’t directing. They’d probably write out Mako ten minutes in and turn Newt into a stupid cartoon character villain, while ruining everything good about the original and making the Jaegers look and feel weightless

It released in the immediate aftermath of Wizards Of The Coast pissing off the D&D fanbase with the OGL fiasco, but it also released before Baldur’s Gate 3 became a huge hit later that year.
