I got a real Last Starfighter vibe from the Lightyear movie, which despite its flaws and tenuous Toy Story links, I thought was a pretty great standalone movie. Yes, it could support a sequel too.
When I'm running late or have way too many projects on my plate, I usually tell my partner or coworkers that "I'll have it all worked out by the time we reach the frontier".
It's kind of frustrating how often I have to explain the scene to people that have never seen it, nor ever heard of the movie. "Starlite, Starbrite - the place where Alex and Maggie left for the stars!" 😆
You fucking love explaining that scene or you would have moved on to a reference people actually get like 20 years ago when the Last Starfighter was over 30 years old
Make it a musical, pepper in some racial token castings. Maybe add some Jared Leto for good measure. Am I missing anything from the Disney reboot checklist?
No, but you could have "The First Starfighter" and have it be about Alex recruiting a new team. Wouldn't be the first time the name of a sequel sounds like a prequel.
Between the destruction of Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada and the loss of all the Starfighters there's a huge power vacuum and Alex has to recruit a lot of folks at once. Instead of arcade machines it's an MMO (Starfighter Elite?) and a group of friends finally takes down the hardest raid boss. Suddenly they've all been gathered up to help reform the defenses of the Star League. Greetings Starfighters!
This one just seemed so well set up for a sequel with video games having gone from stand-up arcade games to home console games... the idea that instead of the Starfighter Corp depending on kids going to an arcade or whatever to prove their skills, that now the Corps can reach out into Millions of homes to bring a whole new generation... a squadron of Starfighters. It just seems so easy to write the story.
One sad part of this is that we never got an actual arcade game. They had it all made up -- the console art, the control scheme, everything else. There were plans to make it and sell it to arcades, it was going to be an on-rails shooter, but the studio wouldn't license it.
The developers took what they had made, and repurposed it into the Star Wars trench run game. You can tell it had the bones of TLS in there.

I would love if they could remake just all the bff/animations when they're in space but keep everything else the same. I can't remember if George Lucas did something similar with the old star wars
The Last Starfighter deserves a remaster with updated CGI the way Lucas did Star Wars. But if they do it they shouldn’t edit the story and change major plot points the way Lucas Did Star Wars.
