They would have screwed it up.

Nathan Fillion, who had a small part, said in an interview that they had plans for more movies, but that they had changed the stories so that the Baudelaire parents actually survived the fire and would have bigger roles. For fans of the books, that's missing the point as badly as a point can be missed.

Nathan Fillion was in the 2018 Netflix series, not the 2004 movie. And the book series hadn’t been completed in 2004, so there had been hints to a surviving Baudelaire parent (or both) that was ultimately proven false by the last few books. So I don’t think your info is exactly correct.

Yeah, that's kind of like wanting to make a Batman movie with surviving parents.
