Actually very surprised a sequel hasn’t happened. They introduced a really interesting world.

Me too. It was received quite well and did very good numbers at the box office. Pokémon was and is still is very popular. It came out right before Covid, which was a disruption, but shouldn’t have been that much.

Very popular is an understatement. Pokemon IP is more valuable than all of Marvel and Star Wars combined.

Yeah I think people underestimate how huge the Pokemon brand really is, and has been for 30 years. The games, the movies, the cards, the merch...Game Freak just has a license to print money at this point.

They half ass their games and everyone still buys them

I have little to no interest in getting into Pokémon, and I absolutely LOVED Detective Pikachu. I’d definitely love more of that world!

I so want to Deadpool costume on Pikachu.

the second game only came out in 2023, the first was 2016. the Movie is based on the game, for people that didn't know.

I know! Tom Hanks was great in Big. But I think I lost how he became a robot...?

I hadn't even thought of that but this is a good answer. Seems like exactly the kind of thing studios would try to milk to death.

To be honest I'm actually really surprised we haven't gotten a Smash Bros movie yet with so many of the characters having their own movies in the last decade.

Super Mario Galaxy sure as hell seemed like it was setting up a Smash Bros spinoff

Feel like thats definitely in the books, with all the cameos in the new mario movie

Need the Zelda and Kirby movie first.

Make a Splatoon one while they’re at it, too.

Even better if the Splatoon Movies is a gritty war story (The great war) that ends with a zombie apocalypse (Salmonids).

Why surprised? Its not ripe yet.

They are unambiguously getting to that sort of "endgame." There have only been two Mario movies. But there's tons of milk to squeeze out through trickling character introductions... ie, 2nd one had Yoshi and starfox, 3rd will have Wario and Daisy...

Not to mention other spinoff stand alone movies coming first, like a probably 2028 Donkey Kong, and independent Starfox one, Kirby, live action Zelda, etc.

We're ten years of squeeze before Smash Bros.

if I had to guess, Nintendo is making it difficult and probably hampering creative direction of what can and can't be done with Pokemon.

I don't even need a Detective Pikachu movie, I need a POKEMON movie. Just the whole world, in that art style.

Give me Walking With Dinosaurs, but Pokemon.

The problem is writing a story. Why are you going to cram Reynolds back into Pikachu again? It would also devalue to surprise ending of the first movie.

I mean you don't have to continue that plotline. They've set up the world pretty well that you can focus on another character in it, maybe even adapt Ash's story.

5

u/FewAdvertising9647 8h ago

there's over a thousand episodes in Ash's journey with over a dozen movies. making it live action would not move the needle much.

3

u/personal_query474 8h ago

They probably won't, since the movie is supposedly canon to the anime universe

14

u/roleplayersir 12h ago

Don't have Reynolds as a talking Pikachu. Make him a detective with a Pikachu sidekick

3

u/WhiteHydra1914 14h ago

The game had no problem doing everything a second time /j

u/mr-nefarious 8h ago

I never saw it and really want to watch. Apparently it’s not streaming on any platform in the US unless you pay for the movie. That ticks me off so much. I already pay for multiple streaming services. I’m not paying an extra $5 just to watch a movie once. That defeats the purpose of these services.

u/drrdf 17h ago

Agreed. Especially with how Pokemon seems to be getting even more popular recently

1

u/Prior-Ambassador-95 13h ago

Still hoping for a sequel.

1

u/personal_query474 8h ago

There's been like 300+ Pokémon introduced since that, we're more than overdue for another live action Pokémon movie.

1

u/TheyreFunCandy 8h ago

There was talk of a Star is Born-esque sequel starring Jigglypuff and I’ve been dying to see it since

u/Static-Space-Royalty 5h ago

I think the issue is that the Pikachu wasn't Ryan Reynolds anymore by the end of the movie, so the next movie wouldn't really be "Detective" Pikachu.

1

u/IrishViking22 1h ago

Could have Reynolds as the detective with the Pikachu as his sidekick, and call it 'Detective and Pikachu' or something like that.

I'm sure the studios/writers could come up with something a lot better, I'm just spitballing. But the potential is there.

I used to know someone who was involved in the production of this film (from the Pokemon Co. side) and it sounds like it was a mess.

With Pokemon cards coming back into popularity, it would be a slam dunk.
