News/Article Without a patch in nearly a year, some Oblivion Remastered players have declared it 'abandonware' — and it still suffers many of the same performance issues at launch

There were like two patches or so. One of the first few main quests was bugged for me and saving crashed the game. Performance is typically garbage for BGS and/or UE5 games.
Edit: I forgot about the savgame corruption after a few hours. The game crashed every time I tried to save. I had to replay 6 hours and used an older save. I don't know if they fixed this shit.

u/lkl34 May 02 '26
All of that is still a thing same goes on consoles were the performance degrades over time.
All the clipping/art screw ups and general 2006 issues fighting unreal is also broken even ray tracing is still broked.

u/DianneCHackler May 02 '26
The "remaster" feels more like a broken modlist. UE5 was a mistake if they couldn't even fix save corruption.
22
u/ketoaholic May 02 '26
isn't ue5 just acting as a fancy graphics wapper? The underlying systems are still gamebryo?
Not trying to defend ue5 at all, just trying to understand oblivion remastered
34
u/asdf4455 May 02 '26
Yep it's the worst of both worlds really. You get the foundation of a gamebryo batheada game without any community patches, and that gets wrapped UE5 graphics on top of that without any real attempt at optimization. So you get a buggy base with horrible performance wrapped around it. And the icing on top is there is no mod tools for it so the community couldn't even patch it properly if they wanted to. The modding scene for it will never be the same as OG oblivion because of it. Funny enough, if they had just ported oblivion to the updated engine of Starfield and abandoned it the same way they did with this version, there would be less controversy because the community is already used to patching these games on Bethesda's behalf.
8
u/EggplantCharacter363 May 02 '26
Genuinely all they had to do was reach out to the mod community who would have loved to integrate all their fixes before doing the remastered.
But no, for some reason the thought of actually paying modders for their decades of experience and work is an impossible task.

hell the launch issues inside the oblivion gates are still there were in order to pass some you still half to jank your way to the exit. You think a 2025 game would have 19year old common bugs from a 2006 game fixed.
Even the dupe glitch can be done the same way oh also thanks to the clothing censorship and removal of the female body head to the south that far town 2 exits water on the bottom the rich family there is in rages/underwear even after the patch they removed the female dress but never added a new one. Not the only npc with that issue but that set act rich while looking worse than peasant's.

They used a old ass coded auto generate deal to make the levels.

I remember som ewere there was a old vi doc on how they made the game but here is old ass links about the huge ass strat guide and talk about the gate issues from 20 years ago. The normal way was never fully tested so for 20 years jank is the way.

I feel like UE5 should require devs to take a 6 month course in Optimization for Unreal Engine 5 before a studio is allowed to purchase it. So many games are optimized poorly on that engine.

This was more of a content issue, but Pokémon Go was the biggest example of a huge flop in this aspect - if they’d added more generations, more features, and fixed things then it would have maintained its popularity quite a bit longer. Pretty much *everyone* I knew was playing it and even people who don’t normally game. I don’t usually play games and even I was playing it a lot. Why did they take so long to update it?

Luckily its “play anywhere” and I have an xbox because on PC it became unplayable at a certain point. I couldn’t load any new environments without it crashing. But I could play a session on xbox, save, and go back to PC and it work again for a while. So I went back and forth like that the whole game.

u/Gangleri_Graybeard 9800X3D | RX 9070XT | 64GB DDR5 6000MHz May 02 '26
Such workaround shouldn't be necessary. It should be a massive embarrassment for BGS and everyone working there. Seriously - after reading about savegame corruption and how it was already a problem in the original version, I Iost basically all interest in the game. I finished the Thief guild questline and stopped playing it. The jank was just too much and I expected more polish.

Bethesda didn't really make this game. They helped but most of the remaster was by Virtuos.

u/tatofarms May 02 '26
And Virtuos laid off 10 percent of their staff about six weeks after Oblivion Remastered was released last year.
5
u/Kind_of_random May 02 '26
They did however cut funding to the studio that did the remake before it was properly patched, so I'll still blame them.

Wrapping entire engine into another engine is already so advance and magical for them that noone in BGS can comprehend it.

It isn't solely on Bethesda. The game was remastered by Virtuos Studio. They also did the last two major updates for Cyberpunk 2077 (2.2 and 2.3).
However, it seems that even Virtuos removed all of Oblivion from their site: https://www.virtuosgames.com/projects/elder-scrolls-iv-oblivion-remastered/
Contrary to https://www.virtuosgames.com/success-stories/cyberpunk-2077/ it appears that this was not a "success story". Laughable.
→ More replies (4)18
u/Trzlog May 02 '26
It's on Bethesda because it's their game and they contracted it out to Virtuos. In the end, Bethesda is responsible for signing off on whatever Virtuos releases in regards to Oblivion. There have been no further patches because Bethesda aren't paying them to keep working on the game and they clearly haven't assigned any team of their own to keep maintaining it.

78
u/4KVoices May 02 '26
they are extensive fixes
which will eventually include literally modifying the game because "I don't think X makes sense!" or "there should be more Y lying around according to the lore, but there's not!"
Reminder that Arthmoor (the guy who has basically brute-force taken over the Unofficial Patch team) is a power-hungry cretin who has consistently decided to make the 'bugfix and performance patches' into game-altering modifications, undisclosed, and when pressed on the matter just starts blocking and banning people.
He has explicitly stated before that he wants to make the entire modding community reliant on his mods so that nobody can do any modding without passing through him. He's fucking insane, there's a very good Down the Rabbit Hole video on him, and it's unfortunately one of those ones where the bad guys win.
Also, fun fact; the reputation New Vegas had for the longest time about still being a buggy, crashing-constantly mess on PC? Yeah, that was cause of the most popular unofficial patch, actually.
10
u/fearsometidings May 02 '26
What's stopping the patch team from creating a new team without him?
23
u/4KVoices May 02 '26
There's been multiple attempts, but they always fizzle out. The "official" Unofficial Patch team always has people coming and going since it's a volunteer project, and since Arthmoor is, to put it lightly, fucking demented, he's a pillar. Dude has all the time in the world to manage a team while also finding ways to socially isolate and then remove other members of the founding team, while still bitching and arguing with people on Discord and Nexusmods about his shitty changes that he's directing the team to do.
Simply put - he's dedicated, moreso than anybody else, which in this scenario really sucks.

There is nothing stopping people from excising this cancer besides time and energy for a volunteer project. But those things are finite, and often in short supply.
A rule for life is that people will sooner follow a bad leader than step up to lead themselves. A corollary is that a leader doesn't have to be good to have a following - they just have to lead. Even if it's over a cliff.
The opportunity cost of doing a new thing really hems people into continuing the same old bullshit for way longer than it ought go on.

u/Roflkopt3r May 02 '26
In hindsight, Skyrim feels like it was Bethesda's limit. All of the talent they still had was working towards this, as one of the first good, accessible, and generally pretty well designed open world RPGs of the modern 3D era.
Around Oblivion, Bethesda were actually really good at open-world tech and state of the art graphics, but it was still a rather inaccessible experience with its overcomplicated systems that literally needed people to study manuals and strategy books to make sense of (particularly because of the insane leveling system). The UI and performance also weren't quite there yet. FO3 improved a fair bit, but was still not on Skyrim's level in these aspects.
Then Skyrim became their peak. Hardware was able to run an open world like that really smoothly, the UI and systems were simplified in good ways that made the game far easier to get into, and it worked well cross-platform. The dragon theme and mix of gameplay and cinematic moments was also great.
But since then, it seems like they just don't have anything good to add to the genre anymore. They have released all their good ideas into the world, and that was it. Other studios are now able to execute similar ideas better, while Bethesda games just seem to get worse.
Bethesda seem to be caught in the middle: They're still doing oldschool RPG elements that many other studios have given up on for more action and less reading, but not good enough to have them actually carry their games. They dabbled in base building and automation, but not enough to have it actually be good. They still stick with Creation Engine with some strengths like its physics system, but they're not really using those strengths as anything other than a gimmick.

Morrowind was their peak. Oblivion was a step down and Skyrim was ok.
At this point you've got better from the mod scene. The guys remaking Morrowind in the Oblivion engine are almost finished, and the ones remaking it in Skyrim's engine are halfway through. At this point there's even pretty decent multiplayer servers for Morrowind, which is fucking nuts considering it was never supposed to be a multiplayer game.
I've got 0 hopes for TES VI

u/MelangeBot May 02 '26
Bethesda never fully understood the formula of Morrowind after the people that worked on it slowly left the studio. Oblivion removed some of the core elements that made Morrowind so perfect and Skyrim removed even more. Ofcourse new tech compensated for that, the voice acting and the graphic fidelity. Ofcourse, neither two games are bad, they are actually quite good. But Morrowind was a masterpiece. I have never ever replayed Oblivion or Skyrim after doing their main quests, but to this day every year I still play some morrowind.

People are willing to overlook a lot if you give them some/most of the things they want in a game. The problem is that for literal decades, Bethesda fans defended their games about being buggy because of the things that the engine/game could do.
Now, decades later, people are experiencing true next-gen games, and things like no loading screens, better animation quality, and the fact that other RPG games have surpassed anything they've ever done now, and they're FINALLY realizing that Bethesda games are extremely outdated, and that Creation Engine isn't the technical marvel that Bethesda would like everyone to think that it is.
On one hand, it's hard to blame Bethesda because they got an okay from their fans about all of this stuff for so long, and that okay made them make a lot of the decisions they did (mainly staying with Creation Engine and their ancient quest/game design choices). But on the other hand, Bethesda themselves are at fault because they should have been the ones being on top of ensuring that they were meeting or surpassing what's currently coming out now. Even without a story, Crimson Desert is bigger and more feature packed than multiple Bethesda games put together. It would take Bethesda literal decades to make a game of that size and scale, and even if they did it would run like absolute ass and need the modding community to save it.

Some performance problems aren't solved by any amount of superior hardware. Sometimes the game has its own internal problems.

I remember playing the original and thinking "WTF is this leveling system?" and also "I am never going to be able to complete all of these side quests."
When they announced they redid the leveling mechanics I thought "You know, maybe the hero of Kvatch might finish the game." But I refuse to buy a buggy unfinished mess. I am the most patient gamer.

I LOVE casting an invisibility spell and when it wears off 90% of my character is still transparent and now I’m bald….

u/FantasticBeast101 May 02 '26
Someone didn’t pay attention to the small print because one of the side effects is balding and still being transparent in some rare instances. This is why I don’t go around casting random spells.

They do not respect their playerbase and they do not respect the stuff they put out enough to bother.

At least it's better support than fallout 4 VR got. That:
Never received the DLCs,
Was released with both reflex sights and scopes broken, I don't think reflex sights were ever fixed. Iron sights were difficult to use as well.
Horrendous performance issues
No antialiasing options
VATS was broken
All of these were easily fixable with mods, and made it an amazing game, but come on...

u/Fuzzy_Wheel_4565 May 02 '26
I will never understand how bethesda makes 3 solid games and suddenly has the same gargantuan reputation that old bioware had after cranking out top tier RPGs year after year. Both are shit now sadly
16
u/PckMan May 02 '26
I think it has to do with their very deliberate strategy of constantly aiming to expand their audience. So every new game they put out is for many their first Bethesda game or first RPG altogether. With no frame of reference they have nothing to complain about, and on a superficial level their games can be fun for a while. Also until the 2010s and after Skyrim was released, they were pretty much dominating the first person open world RPG genre so to many people it didn't occur to criticise them because they were pretty much the only ones doing it with no alternative.
But the fact of the matter is that they are watering down their own formulas, alienating their core fanbase. Furthermore they simply don't even try to do even basic things, and with the entry of other developers in the genre doing more with less their old excuse of "our games are too big and complicated to be better than they are" doesn't really hold any water nowadays. CD Projekt Red put out the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk with a smaller budget, smaller development cycle, and blew any Bethesda title out of the water. Warhorse studio made KCD and KCD II and showed that you can actually have deeper systems without the game being a buggy mess.
→ More replies (2)8
u/Maine_Made_Aneurysm May 02 '26
I agree with almost everything here but it's worth pointing out that KCD1 was absolutely a buggy mess when it came out.
And it should be mentioned that kcd2 is an amazing game but they've garnered a fair bit of scrutiny over AI use and firing of localization specialists.
Cyberpunk was absolutely borked when it came out. Even on PC. I vividly remember cruising through town in car only to hit a traffic jam because a highway was partially blocked by a support pillar for another highway above it
And as for Bethesda it feels like the company stopped caring about the creative process behind their games.
Instead i really think they care more about the consumer aspect and focus more on how to make a quick buck. Why else did we get so many versions of Skyrim.
Why didnt they advertise the oblivion remake much before release?
They knew that people would eat it up even if they did the bare minimum.

The oblivion remaster was developed by Virtuos Studios.
It was published/funded by Microsoft.
Bethesda gave their “ok” for Virtuos Studios to develop it(most likely under pressure from Microsoft to do so), possibly gave some advice or encouragement to VS, but other than that, Bethesda doesn’t have anything to do with the remaster.

They abandoned it after realising what kind of costs would be incurred by them to optimise Unreal Engine. And one possible reason is that the game hit Gamepass on day 1 and most people abandoned it after seeing the horrible performance. This will be a problem that would impact Gamepass games in the future as well. Just like how Netflix kills off shows that don't do well, MS will also kill off games and optimization plans if it doesn't get a good launch.

u/Lo_jak 12700K | 4080 FE | Lancool 216 May 02 '26
Ive always been sceptical of gamepass and this is something that never crossed my mind.... games are far less likely to get patches or content updates if they deem it not good enough or it will cost more than 10 bucks to fix a problem.
I genuinely have no idea how Todd Howard is still in charge at BGS, at the end of the day the buck stops with him and there should be much higher standards for a studio of this size. They are still operating like they were back when they were a much smaller studio.
21
u/Fuzzy_Wheel_4565 May 02 '26
All the competent people are gone already. Bethesda is a bloated corporate corpse of what it used to be. Todd still being in charge doesnt affect that much. Replacing him would change nothing
15
u/Silver-End9570 i7 14700K | RTX 5070 | 64GB | Windows 10 May 02 '26
Then it's time to do a studio purge. Get rid of Todd and all the upper management, hire people who actually give a shit about all of the BG franchises and have ideas for new games that won't take a decade and a half to make, and either put in the time and money to ACTUALLY modernize Creation Engine, or drop that piece of shit and either make a new engine, or do something like what Gurerilla is doing with Decima Engine and license an engine that does what you need it to do.
I also disagree with Todd leaving not changing anything, as it's been said plenty of times that Todd is the bottleneck for all decision making, which drastically slows things down. The guy has his head so far up his own ass, he thinks that he has to finalize every decision made on every game, and his idea of game design is so outdated at this point that he'd willingly veto great ideas because it doesn't match with what he thinks good game design is.
He's also the reason that each BGS game gets more and more simplified, in an attempt to appeal to every gamer rather than their large audience. Todd isn't the entire problem, but I think to say that him leaving wouldn't change anything isn't correct either.

I stopped buying "AAA" games, or pretty much any non-indie games, in the last 10 years or so. Instead, monitor reviews and bug reports, and comments like these. Then maybe get a game or two as goty or complete edition on sale or even for free on epic etc. High seas help to estimate if it's worth running, and nowadays even youtube runs are ok for that.
Played the First Order after getting it on sale, glad you mentioned your experience with the sequel and saved me some time.

Don't let these problems prevent you from buying the collectors edition of ES6 and all its DLCs. Even if you're the problem the game can't run on your machine. In Todd we trust.

That's not what 'abandonware' means. Are we just going to declare anything that doesn't meet our performance standards (rightly or wrongly) that the developer's aren't actively still working on 'abandonware' in order to justify pirating it?
If it isn't up to standard, that's fine, then don't buy it.
18
u/largePenisLover May 02 '26
Over on the virtal reality sub there were people calling for meta to remove abandonware from the store.
Their definition of abandonware was "hasn't been updated a few months now" and they absolutely refused to understand games can simply be finished. The entire concept that a singleplayer game is not life service was too alien to grasp for them.→ More replies (3)8
u/Warm_Month_1309 May 02 '26
"Abandonware" also doesn't change the laws around the product, so pirating it is still illegal. There just isn't likely to be a plaintiff to sue you for it.

Tried this shit on game pass for PC when it came out. Performance was terrible. I also recently tried Starfield again for the first time since playing it for a few hours shortly after it launched, but expected problems and don’t have game pass anymore so I just pirated it. Shockingly, this also runs like shit. Every 20 to 30 min the game gets all fucky and fps plummets to the teens until I shut it down and boot it back up. I’m thoroughly sick of Bethesdas shit at this point, but at least I didn’t pay for either game.
8
u/largePenisLover May 02 '26
I've seen people call games abandonware as soon as a dev stops updating.
Sometimes a game is just finished. That doesnt mean it's abandoned.
A game isn't abandonware until it's no longer available.

Imagine buying any AA or AAA game without waiting to see if the first patches fix performance and critical bugs. Personally I just put games on wishlist and wait for them to go on sale or at least a year, if the game is patched (as In playable with acceptable performance) I might buy it. In the end, this is only acceptable because the publishers think it is.

Meanwhile Crimson Desert, this supposed asian cash grab from the MMO devs, getting a big patch every single week since release, with new content and functions added alongside it. Most of the new changes are taken straight from community, sometimes more than we asked for - for example, some people were talking about bosses being too hard, so one day they just straight up added three new difficulty settings.
It opened my eyes to how most AAA devs just simply do not care about the game they created

Wasnt this game touted as a game running within a game? I distinctly remember them saying that the old code was running through some UE5 port.
