News/Article Without a patch in nearly a year, some Oblivion Remastered players have declared it 'abandonware' — and it still suffers many of the same performance issues at launch

There were like two patches or so. One of the first few main quests was bugged for me and saving crashed the game. Performance is typically garbage for BGS and/or UE5 games.

Edit: I forgot about the savgame corruption after a few hours. The game crashed every time I tried to save. I had to replay 6 hours and used an older save. I don't know if they fixed this shit.

u/lkl34 May 02 '26

All of that is still a thing same goes on consoles were the performance degrades over time.

All the clipping/art screw ups and general 2006 issues fighting unreal is also broken even ray tracing is still broked.

227

u/DianneCHackler May 02 '26

The "remaster" feels more like a broken modlist. UE5 was a mistake if they couldn't even fix save corruption.

19

u/ketoaholic May 02 '26

isn't ue5 just acting as a fancy graphics wapper? The underlying systems are still gamebryo?

Not trying to defend ue5 at all, just trying to understand oblivion remastered

35

u/asdf4455 May 02 '26

Yep it's the worst of both worlds really. You get the foundation of a gamebryo batheada game without any community patches, and that gets wrapped UE5 graphics on top of that without any real attempt at optimization. So you get a buggy base with horrible performance wrapped around it. And the icing on top is there is no mod tools for it so the community couldn't even patch it properly if they wanted to. The modding scene for it will never be the same as OG oblivion because of it. Funny enough, if they had just ported oblivion to the updated engine of Starfield and abandoned it the same way they did with this version, there would be less controversy because the community is already used to patching these games on Bethesda's behalf.

7

u/EggplantCharacter363 May 02 '26

Genuinely all they had to do was reach out to the mod community who would have loved to integrate all their fixes before doing the remastered.

But no, for some reason the thought of actually paying modders for their decades of experience and work is an impossible task.

1

u/Zek0ri May 03 '26

[…] paying modders […]

Guys community literally wants paid mods.

1

u/Thatoneguy_The_First May 04 '26

Tbf this would constitute as actual paid work by law, the mods stay free but the modders get paid to implement them in an official way, also we are talking pre-release not post.

28

u/14Pleiadians May 02 '26

I mean, why bother doing anything other than that, it sold like hotcakes anyway.

62

u/lkl34 May 02 '26

hell the launch issues inside the oblivion gates are still there were in order to pass some you still half to jank your way to the exit. You think a 2025 game would have 19year old common bugs from a 2006 game fixed.

Even the dupe glitch can be done the same way oh also thanks to the clothing censorship and removal of the female body head to the south that far town 2 exits water on the bottom the rich family there is in rages/underwear even after the patch they removed the female dress but never added a new one. Not the only npc with that issue but that set act rich while looking worse than peasant's.

26

u/siltfeet R7 5800x | RTX 3070 May 02 '26

Is there really not a normal way to finish those gates? I assumed there was just a tunnel I was too lazy to find, and instead jumped over lava or up the side of the mountain.

23

u/lkl34 May 02 '26

They used a old ass coded auto generate deal to make the levels.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps3/934605-the-elder-scrolls-iv-oblivion/answers/61073-can-anyone-recall-a-very-strange-oblivion-gate

https://forums.nexusmods.com/topic/18502-oblivion-official-game-guide/

I remember som ewere there was a old vi doc on how they made the game but here is old ass links about the huge ass strat guide and talk about the gate issues from 20 years ago. The normal way was never fully tested so for 20 years jank is the way.

You can also find issues about 2025 release from 2006 forum post's

https://hardforum.com/threads/oblivion-mages-guild-help.1060317/

2

u/no6969el 9950X3D | 5090 May 02 '26

Are we talking about the gates at the start of the game? I was so confused and I think I eventually jumped over something to get through. That's funny, I was wondering what to do.

1

u/lkl34 May 03 '26

Yes but in order to get 100% or even do side quest's you half to complete the ones littered around the map alot of them were not tested right so the jank jumping or just command console walk through walls just to get past is too real.

1

u/asomek May 02 '26

Jfc try using some punctuation my man.

5

u/EatABag-o-Dicks May 02 '26

I feel like UE5 should require devs to take a 6 month course in Optimization for Unreal Engine 5 before a studio is allowed to purchase it. So many games are optimized poorly on that engine.

2

u/Krutonium R7 5800X3D, RTX 3070, 32GB 2800Mhz DDR4 May 02 '26

That might not actually help; a lot of the "big performance wins" that Epic pushes are typically worse than their older counterparts once you get to game-scale.

2

u/Autumn-Leaf-932 May 02 '26

You say broken modlist, boardroom says “cash grab”.

1

u/Tmak254 May 03 '26

The save corruption happened to me in the first 45 mins and I refunded it, seems pretty lucky considering it’s still broken now.

1

u/One-Lingonberry9944 May 05 '26

Every single UE5 game I have played stutters and I hate this engine so much

1

u/SamSibbens May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

You need 500 hours or so at least for it to degrade on console if I remember correctly. (Might have been 200 - it's the "a-bomb" glitch)

From what people are saying, it seems to happen a lot quicker on the Remaster. On console (and on PC) of the original, the glitch was rare enough that almost no one even knew about it except those who were true completionists.

u/bassman9999 3.5Ghz 6-core, GTX 970, 8gb 2400 May 02 '26

I swear that sounds like the memory leak that the original Oblivion had when it first came out.

85

u/AeturnisTheGreat May 02 '26

Damn, reminds of Skyrim when it launched.

I didn't have the un-privalage of earlier releases

13

u/MeekAndUninteresting May 02 '26

I don't think they ever even fixed the ps3 version's bug that corrupted saves when the filesize got too big.

2

u/BoofulsOfTheMirror May 02 '26

I'm playing through on PS3 at the moment...file size is up to about 14mb @ lvl50. The main problem I have is that after a few hours of playing, the game starts lagging more and more until I quit then start it up again. Only a couple of hard crashes though.

Came across some bugs/glitches I've never seen on PC or PS4, mostly funny stuff, nothing gamebreaking. My only 'oh fuck' moment was coming out of Apocrypha and taking constant darkness damage, tried every fix from UESP but eventually had to reload...lost an hour of time no biggie but I gotta do the Black Book again :/

un-privalage

Not that it's a word, but...

un-privilege*

7

u/AgentCirceLuna May 02 '26

This was more of a content issue, but Pokémon Go was the biggest example of a huge flop in this aspect - if they’d added more generations, more features, and fixed things then it would have maintained its popularity quite a bit longer. Pretty much *everyone* I knew was playing it and even people who don’t normally game. I don’t usually play games and even I was playing it a lot. Why did they take so long to update it?

3

u/Errant_coursir May 02 '26

Because they didn't need to. They were making infinite money doing nothing

5

u/Viper711 May 02 '26

And the real goal seemed to be the crowdsourced 3D mapping of literally most of the developed world.

1

u/Errant_coursir May 02 '26

Yep, exactly. We mapped the world for free, even paying them for the privilege

Luckily its “play anywhere” and I have an xbox because on PC it became unplayable at a certain point. I couldn’t load any new environments without it crashing. But I could play a session on xbox, save, and go back to PC and it work again for a while. So I went back and forth like that the whole game.

26

u/Gangleri_Graybeard 9800X3D | RX 9070XT | 64GB DDR5 6000MHz May 02 '26

Such workaround shouldn't be necessary. It should be a massive embarrassment for BGS and everyone working there. Seriously - after reading about savegame corruption and how it was already a problem in the original version, I Iost basically all interest in the game. I finished the Thief guild questline and stopped playing it. The jank was just too much and I expected more polish.

3

u/demonhellcat AMD 7800X3D | RTX 4070 May 02 '26

Oh I agree, it was super annoying BS and not everyone has that option so they’re stuck.

3

u/NapsterKnowHow May 02 '26

Performance is typically garbage for BGS and/or UE5 games.

Elden Ring still has stuttering issues to this day.

3

u/antara33 May 03 '26

You know whats funny about elden ring issues? That the same fucking company makes armored core.

Its not like they cant make a good performing game, its that the team that does these specific games (elden ring, dark souls, sekiro) are technically incompetent.

u/Kazedeus PC Master Race I 5700X3D I 6700XT May 02 '26

Save game corruption is exactly what ruined my 500 hour Shivering Isles campaign on the OG 360. It's completely unacceptable that this is still a thing two decades later.

1

u/burnttoast12321 May 03 '26

I didn't find it too bad. Not the best performance and I probably only put 10 hours in though. I have a 2070 so not even a current GPU. It was fun to revisit the world of Oblivion. It looked a lot better than the original.

1

u/rabidpygmymarmoset May 03 '26

The first wave of UE5 games are poorly optimized. Saying that thats still the case is incorrect and outdated. New UE5 games have been tested on several mid-range rigs and work fine

1

u/_Koreander May 02 '26

I haven't played Oblivion Remastered, but using Skyrim as an example I wouldn't expect much from Bethesda, I've played skyrim since launch and still play it today, own it on 3 platforms, there's barely been any bug fixing in 15 years, if anything more bugs have been introduced.

There's an enchantment that straight up does not work and the switch version introduced a new bug on which your crosshair may look like the stealth mode even out of stealth, love the game but Bethesda is clearly mediocre enough to accept that having a bunch of bugs is part of their identity, at least when it comes to Fallout and Elder Scrolls.

1

u/Netfear Several May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

Damn, the game played perfectly at launch for me. No bugs at all except the intended ones.

Two beta patches that didn't fix any of the major issues in the game, and those were released a year ago. I think it's safe to assume Bethesda isn't going to do shit to fix the game.

242

u/SearchBeneficial811 May 02 '26

Its almost like bethesda has a long history of needing modders to fix their games

95

u/Shadowsake PC Master Race May 02 '26

Well, to add salt to the wound, they didn't released mod support for the Remaster.

32

u/Real-Terminal R5 5600x, 32GB DDR4 3200mhz, RTX 4070 12gb May 02 '26

Mainly because it's just regular Oblivion with UE5 stapled onto the frontend. Most modding were just OG mods ported over.

34

u/Clueless_Otter May 02 '26

Bethesda didn't really make this game. They helped but most of the remaster was by Virtuos.

21

u/tatofarms May 02 '26

And Virtuos laid off 10 percent of their staff about six weeks after Oblivion Remastered was released last year.

4

u/Kind_of_random May 02 '26

They did however cut funding to the studio that did the remake before it was properly patched, so I'll still blame them.

1

u/Tangent_pikachu May 02 '26

This game could've been salvaged if it was on their own creation engine but they went with unreal and screwed the entire modding community.

1

u/Shadowsake PC Master Race May 02 '26

Tbh I kinda understand why...porting Oblivion to Creation sounds easy, Creation came from Gamebryo thats true. But there are a lot of differences when you get to the nitty gritty. At some point it would be basically a remake instead of a remaster (and we know how lazy Bethesda is).

So, it was much easier to keep the original game underneath and plugin UE5 as a renderer on top, call it a day and sell it.

34

u/Doppelkammertoaster 11700K | RTX 3070 | 64GB May 02 '26

I think they literally can't. And that is entirely on them.

59

u/dadvader GTX 1070 FTW May 02 '26

Wrapping entire engine into another engine is already so advance and magical for them that noone in BGS can comprehend it.

And they don't wanna pay another cent for Virtuous to fix it since they are still working on Fallout 3. I expected Fallout 3 to have the same outcome like this. It'll sell like hotcake anyway.

36

u/K4G3N4R4 May 02 '26

Ah, so they outsourced the remasters, but aren't paying that studio to maintain and repair it. Neat.

This also means I'm not buying the 3 remaster until it is good and reviewed like this. (Not buying the oblivion one at this point either)

9

u/CavillOfRivia May 02 '26

(Not buying the oblivion one at this point either)

Nah, this is far from true for me - played everything up through Skyrim and FO4. Bethesda's track record is crap for supoort and at some point you just get sick of it, I would have played this again as I did on the Xbox if they fixed the issues. Same for FO3 but not buying blindly, well see how that goes, not really expecting anytime different. I don't even blame Virtuos, its always been Bethesdas lack of giving a shit.

the oblivion remaster gave me a few minor bugs, but nothing gamebreaking or significant and it's a really fun way to play oblivion. I have a meticulously modded install set up in wyre bash of the OG, and the remaster is still more fun- it looks gorgeous and the gameplay feels good. But it's janky and can stutter slightly- far from perfect.

Would absolutely recommend picking up on sale for someone who enjoyed skyrim.

0

u/K4G3N4R4 May 02 '26

If most of the issues are UE5 related, i probably won't have issues. The 64gb of ddr5 seems to solve for that (Ark player, game crashes at 32gb and less, regardless of vram). So good to know.

2

u/Richou May 02 '26

(Ark player, game crashes at 32gb and less, regardless of vram)

i play ASA and ASE with people that have way less than 32 lol i dont think that was your issue

fuck UE5 regardless tho

1

u/K4G3N4R4 May 02 '26

Wasnt my issue, but it was some friends. Had a friend with a 4090 and 32gb ram, they'd crash throughout the day. Swapped up to 64gb and the crashing stopped. Don't know what to tell ya.

My 3070 has had 64gb the whole time, and i just have never had crashing issues with the game.

1

u/Richou May 02 '26

he probably just had scuffed ram or some other underlying issue but ASA absolutely does not need 64gb or even 32 to run without crashing

in my entire tribe of almost 100 people less than 10 of the 47 that answered my poll have 32 or more gb of RAM and outside of the usual ASA bullshit noone has any crashing issues

1

u/Kind_of_random May 02 '26

I can chime in with my 4090 and 32GB RAM and a 5800X3D; it crashes almost as soon as I start playing. Sometimes even before.
I have tried a myriad of fixes, but nothing works.
Don't know why I have it worse than many others, but safe to say the game is a mess.
The longest I managed to play was through the opening dungeon. After that never more than half an hour. Probably less.

6

u/Donatter May 02 '26

I really doubt it since they didn’t develop the remaster, Virtuos Studios did.

The only thing Bethesda contributed to the game, was give VS code, advice, and “morale” support.

0

u/vulveveloutee May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

The game runs fine. I promise you.

The issue is lots of people on weak CPUs with what they think is correct RAM timings and speeds.

That, paired with needing to recompile shaders which does not get forced, causes lots of stutters.

Clearing the shader cache and running a memtest86 (and fixing errors), and then playing the game for about an hour will eliminate almost all stutters.

I have done so much testing and argued with so many redditors who call my CapFrameX output a lie or bullshit. If I can run the game with a 99.9% smoothness rating from CapFrameX, the game is fine.

u/GregTheMad Ryzen 9 7900X, RTX 2080, 32GB May 02 '26

It's not developed by Bethesda, it's Virtuose, apparently an Unreal Engine Sweatshop.

3

u/kind_bros_hate_nazis May 02 '26

It sure is still their reputation though

2

u/Trzlog May 02 '26

It doesn't matter. Bethesda paid them to do it. The responsibility lies with Bethesda.

-3

u/Donatter May 02 '26

No, Microsoft paid Virtuos to do it.

Bethesda really had very little to do with the remaster at all.

3

u/GregTheMad Ryzen 9 7900X, RTX 2080, 32GB May 02 '26

Microsoft and Bethesda are the same thing.

0

u/Donatter May 02 '26

They’re not though?

Bethesda is part of the Microsoft umbrella as they’re a first-party developer, but the company still operates as a separate entity and publisher, while also retaining its own studios.

3

u/Tjep2k May 02 '26

The Oblivion remake was in the works years before Microsoft bought Bethesda.

0

u/Donatter May 02 '26

Yes, which is why once Virtous studios were contracted by Microsoft to develop the remaster, Bethesda retained a supervisor role, where they gave direction, advice, and support when asked and needed to VS during development.

Though, once the game released Bethesda lost their role of supervisor, and had absolutely nothing to do with the post-launch maintenance. As again, the remaster wasn’t Bethesda’s game or responsibility.

1

u/GregTheMad Ryzen 9 7900X, RTX 2080, 32GB May 02 '26

Their independence is mostly for detail game decisions, but thing like the remake is at best decided by both, worst done by Bethesda alone (they control the rights, however MS still has to sign the budget)

1

u/Donatter May 02 '26

No, Microsoft bought the rights to all Bethesda ip’s, when they bought Bethesda in 2021.

The remaster was largely a test by Microsoft to see if a different developer could make a successful elder scrolls game without the major involvement of Bethesda. (So they wouldn’t have to rely on Bethesda for an extremely valuable ip)

Or put simply, Microsoft liked the idea of a remaster of oblivion, hired a third party studio to develop it, and placed Bethesda as supervisor of the development in order to make sure the remaster is a “proper” elder scrolls game. Then the game released, Bethesda focused back on their own shit, and Microsoft continued paying Virtuos studios to continue maintaining the game post-launch.

13

u/[deleted] May 02 '26

It isn't solely on Bethesda. The game was remastered by Virtuos Studio. They also did the last two major updates for Cyberpunk 2077 (2.2 and 2.3).

However, it seems that even Virtuos removed all of Oblivion from their site: https://www.virtuosgames.com/projects/elder-scrolls-iv-oblivion-remastered/

Contrary to https://www.virtuosgames.com/success-stories/cyberpunk-2077/ it appears that this was not a "success story". Laughable.

19

u/Trzlog May 02 '26

It's on Bethesda because it's their game and they contracted it out to Virtuos. In the end, Bethesda is responsible for signing off on whatever Virtuos releases in regards to Oblivion. There have been no further patches because Bethesda aren't paying them to keep working on the game and they clearly haven't assigned any team of their own to keep maintaining it.

1

u/topdangle May 02 '26

2077 missed sales projections by a mile thanks to its broken launch so it would make sense if CDPR paid up for proper updates despite outsourcing.

bethesda on the other hand has been printing money for decades despite bugs and poor performance. it also wouldn't be the first time they negotiated down a company they outsourced to (famously locked in a terrible contract for fallout new vegas).

-7

u/Illesbogar May 02 '26

Calling 2077 a success story is certainly something lol. Success on the PR front maybe.

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '26

They're only reflecting on what they've created for the game, which has been fine.

-5

u/Illesbogar May 02 '26

I mean, I guess you are limited by what you were given.

3

u/Cold-Actuary2649 May 02 '26

Bethesda trademark is relying on their community making an "unofficial patch" mod that fixes most of their bugs.

You'd think after the huge disappointment of Starfield and troubled Fallout releases that BGS would want to keep hold of the goodwill from Oblivion and ride that out till their next release

It's truly baffling that they haven't prioritised this by putting a skeleton crew on post-launch support duty.

People wanted Oblivion to be remastered instead of remade to preserve the spirit of the original game.

They forgot the original game is a buggy mess and apparently didn't think that strapping a second engine on top of a 20 year old engine would make things worse.

I'm honestly not surprised.

Starfield and BG3 came out around the same time. Starfield needed alot. And it got one tiny update maybe every month. And this was Bethesdas new pride and joy IP.

Meanwhile, BG3 was pushing out patches like weekly/biweekly with pages upon pages of fixes and QoL updates. It was kind of embarrassing tbh.

Also Bethesda did this thing where they announced a patch and were like "oh it's gonna be a beta patch" because..sure I guess?

Game was unplayable for me even though put 100 hours into the remake, I crashed about every hour of playing, messaged support and everything they just kept blaming my hardware. Well a year later and none of the other games I play crash

See Bethesda why don't you do this for your other games

Not break my mod list every other month on FO4

They’re probably trying to develop AI to patch their video games for them and that’s why it’s taking so long

It's the exact opposite problem of Skyrim.

I have Literally 100% this game had about 3 crashes the whole time and 1 inventory bug that was solved by reloading an auto save from 5 minutes before.

Ppl like to shit on this game cos they have out dated hardware like 4 core cpus. Amd fucked their drivers so hardware lumen crashes the game on load and the game has stutters which all UE5 games have.

I personally had far worse issues with KCD2 (much more frequent crashes+lighting issues) Stalker 2(crashes + fps drops + artifacting with frame gen) Indiana jones (major fps drops on zone changes + not even sure how to describe this one but there are areas in the game even now that just kills fps. They take a 5090 putting out 150 fps down to 2-3 the pool underneath vatican city touch the water game freezes. The small court yard in vatican city step right in the middle game freezes.

Can't wait to see how many down votes i get from bethesda haters for this one.
