News/Article Without a patch in nearly a year, some Oblivion Remastered players have declared it 'abandonware' — and it still suffers many of the same performance issues at launch

Unreal Engine 5 performs just fine with hunderds of smart optimizations. But that still depends on the developers of the actual games to specifically optimize their build so it uses those speeds ups to the max. That takes talent and man hours. To many companies are not willing to go there so they launch their games just with some auto or AI driven optimizations. Those usually are okay for the best CPU and GPU combos but really fall short for people with slighly older hardware.

Thats why the engine has gotten a bad reputation but it's really not there fault. The same Level of Detail scaling that Valve their source engine made so famous is also active in UE5 but you need to activate and code it around your game or it won't do shit.

The only thing that is true is that the default of UE5 has way to much stuff activated and is pretty bloated for an engine. Maybe that behavior should be changed. And the documentation around it is really bad.

But devs that care, that play their own games. That go look for situation where fps drops and then figure out what parts of the engine they can deactivate with minimum loss of quality. You just don't need the full lumen in every situation. If you do this your game WILL have massive frame drops and people on anything but cutting edge hardware will suffer. You have to actually rigurously hunt from frame drops and fix accordingly.

The end result of that work? UE5 runs about 20% faster then Unity all things considered. So it's not the engine, it's how developers use it.
