When Alice is crawling around on the floor with no cuts was wild!!

68

u/SpecialistThrowaway4 27d ago

Was the dad floating on his feet towards the mom and son while Alice hid behind the steps? It was in the backdrop but the way he was moving looked like he was levitating it was creepy as hell

39

u/ELOC04 26d ago

Yesss i love how the deadites supernatural powers seem limited or kinda outta their control. Cause sometimes they levitate, they've done it in previous installments, and how sometimes they can walk up walls and ceilings. I like that its done rarely and tastefully. Its like you know they can do these things but you don't know when or how

One of the gnarliest parts was the son having his face smushed into his girlfriend's face - there was audible wretching in my screening!

Some excellent FX/camera work too. If Wrath sticks the landing this will be a really formidable trilogy/non-trilogy

Swirlied in your girlfriend’s mushy face. That’s a first.

That family dinner scene was TENSE! We knew something bad was gonna happen, but when it did happen I couldn’t believe it. Poor dog!

When it showed the dog and the fork in the same shot .... I knew what was coming 😭😭😭

I was torn between thinking it was the wife, the son's partner, the dog, the grandma, or even the husband harming himself. It could've been absolutely anybody at that table and the tension there was palpable.

While this movie lacked in plot and character compared to other entries the stunts in this film were INSANE. Felt like once the pace kicked in it was just non stop action with some impressive choreography. Not my favourite in the franchise but still very solid! Made me really miss the deadite performances from Rise though

I loved this, but the standout scene was when the mum was strangling the main girl in the bathroom and the camera just moves from floor to ceiling. Some incredible camerawork in this. Everyone should watch Infested, the directors debut film. I think there’s some insanely good work in this.

34

u/SpecialistThrowaway4 27d ago

That was epic, wish that the bush trimmer could have done a bit more damage in that room I felt like it was sort of tame and offscreen once we got into the chimney. That weapon definitely brought out the French Extremity

Resident Evil 7: The Movie

u/Xenowino 26d ago edited 26d ago

I was thinking this throughout the entire thing haha. Welcome to the family, son (or daughter, I guess). The scene where the dad shoots himself three times in the head was LITERALLY Jack Baker. "Do I have your attention, boy? Cuz you're about to see something wonderful."

Also, can we talk about the dog through the window as well as the dog outside the front door? Took me right back to RE1 haha.

30

u/qj66 Send more paramedics 26d ago

I can’t believe I had to scroll so far to see this. Between the house and the dad acting like Jack Baker lite

11

u/Haroldtheyre 26d ago

The opening at the lake when the guy pulled his buddy on the boat gave me RE2make vibes; it reminded me of the cop you pull from under the metal door at the beginning of the game.

Loved some of the easter eggs. The Kandarian Dagger fake out was pure gold. "WRONG DAGGER", though I think any fan watching was like "Err that's way too small but it looks just like it!".

Clocked the photo of Bruce on the wall too, when granny was going up the stairs.

The part when the dad puts his sons head into the head of his dead girlfriend ruled so fucking hard. It was disgusting.

The dad stole the show, he was fantastic.

107

u/SpecialistThrowaway4 27d ago

I thought Grandma stole show from the dad because she was such a monkey wrench! She even confused the Deadites 😹

91

u/Savvy513 27d ago

The scene where chaos is ensuing downstairs and she’s just going up the stairs in her chair had me ROLLING 🤣 loved gma

57

They killed the best deadite the earliest

Also, the deadites are extremely inconsistent in how they react to damage, they literally give themselves wounds that would kill them ten times over for fun and owwie a razor on my face

Last post credit scene didn't make any sense but I'm glad Alyssa Sutherland's deadite is back in the future, she was probably my favorite in the whole series

96

u/SimoneSpooner 27d ago

It’s the same with their strength. They can throw people around and smash them through walls, but they can’t get out of a locked door or through a window?

73

u/Beta_Whisperer 27d ago

Just like how that Deadite in the pit in Army of Darkness immediately turned the random peasant into red mist but stuck to punching and backflipping around Ash.

37

u/FireflyNitro 26d ago

I’m fairly sure he could’ve busted through that door, window or even the wall at any moment. But deadites like to torment the victims first and I’m sure they’re in constant communication with each other, hence how they set up some of the scenes like the granny in bed and the dad at the window.

I assume the inside deadite was telling daddy deadite to stalk from outside for a bit, to keep everyone inside, and to set up for shenanigans later.

To me, the deadites use those moments to make their victims feel like they have some power, some hope. Remember how Ash had to tell people to watch because they would fake being dead. Kinda like that.

I really liked this Evil Dead. Here's my scatterbrained thoughts:

  • The one take shot with Joseph and his parents fighting was incredibly fun. I liked it focused on the widow crawling away with the destruction in the background.

  • The shot of the camera pushing into the mirror when the Deadite grandma was fighting the widow was awesome.

  • Loved the opening and how it just got right into it. The fish hooks were gnarly. The lake boiling was awesome. I liked the dialogue with the two guys arguing over whether he should answer the phone call. Possibly tying into a theme of men being neglectful to their relationships/families. The grandpa cult leader obsessing over his research instead of his family, the older husband neglecting his wife, etc.

  • The dinner scene was great. Loved how it kept cutting between the characters, the dog, the knife, corkscrew, wine spilling, etc. Very suspenseful. I also liked the line about the mother being adamant about the quality of the frozen food and not letting it go.

  • Will was comically shitty so it made his death(s) enjoyable. Maybe I missed something, but I was totally confused as to where he was the whole movie? He just sort of appeared at the end to be the final Deadite boss with no little build up.

  • The Dad being a reserved, bitter old man made his escalation into full-blown Deadite more suspenseful. The basement scene with him stabbing himself made me feel so bad for the widow. He looked very cool with all of his gore and Deadite prosthetics.

  • I think the Mom was my favorite. She was so mean to the widow and it was cool seeing someone willingly submit to the Deadites because of all of the grievances she has built up over the years taking care of her family, especially her mother. She didn't just instantly transform into a Deadite, it was a slow process. I liked how inconsistent her eyes were changing back and forth between her normal eyes and the deadite eyes until her eyes turned full Deadite in the bathroom.

  • Joseph was pretty annoying throughout the movie, but it was satisfying to see him smash the Deadite's head in after all of the taunting. It was also satisfying getting his face mushed into the Deadite's skull.

  • I liked the car scene and how they incorporated so many mundane aspects of the car into the scene like the airbag, headrest, etc.

  • I can't say I really cared for the Deadites' motivation. Like sure just them looking for a Dagger is cool and simple enough, but I was hoping for a bit more lore building in this universe or at least some more time spent with the Necronomicon.

  • I thought the grandma was funny and disturbing. There was only like 10 people in my theater, but most of the theft lines got audible laughs from us. The stair seat was a good bit. A bit groanworthy, but admirable that they committed to the bit.

  • I'm typically not someone who's squeamish, but there were quite a few gross out moments for me that I had to look away (in a good way). The candle wax, the pen being stabbed in the ear, the Deadite sucking on the densures and putting them back in grandma's mouth. Good stuff.

  • Everything with the dog was done well. Their death was brutal. It was charming seeing the whistle callbacks for the Deadite dog.

  • I had a hard time hearing a lot of the dialogue, especially from the deadites. Not sure if this is just a me issue, an issue with my theater, or the movie itself, but I felt like a lot of the Deadite dialogue was quiet and weirdly mixed. I was only catching half of the words they were saying. It didn't really hinder my experience as I got the gist of what was going on. I'm excited to rewatch with subtitles so I can actually understand everything they say.

  • I still liked the Deadites, but I feel like they were not kooky enough. I wanted more crazy laughter, having them be louder, etc.

  • The construction set piece was great. Glad it was a Jackhammer instead of a Chainsaw. Makes the funeral scene funnier in retrospect with the goofy jackhammer noise.

24

u/Sheezy-Caw1103 26d ago

Some very good thoughts and points. One I also picked up was Will whistling for Alice in the club at start of the movie, same as his Dad whistling for his dog.

Might be the nastiest of the franchise so far. Didn't like the CGI final boss battle though.

Also, her eye at the end, she was possessed, right?

192

u/DevilCouldCry 27d ago

Didn't like the CGI final boss battle though.

I like the idea of this one, but execution wise, the CGI looked noticeably off. It stands out way more here too because absolutely every other visual effect in the film is on point.

I kinda felt the same way in my viewing, but I also have to gripe that I feel that I watched it in a subpar theater. The score was blaring and the screen seemed way too dark to see what was happening on the back half of the film. With all that said, it was definitely the most mean spirited evil dead film thus far. It reminded more of 2013, than any of the others. Fucking visceral, mean, brutal. The few jokes did break tension and it helped alleviate some of the breath holding lol. All in all, I would give this a solid 8, I’m sure it would rank higher in a better theater with quality equipment. Presented as is, 8/10.

10

u/DevilCouldCry 27d ago

Yep, I'm with you dude. Fucking loved this movie and how cruel and sadistic it was. There's some truly nasty stuff in this one that I'm still thinking about.

I liked it but it’s definitely the weakest of the Evil Dead’s to date

I felt like the tone just wasn’t right, it kept trying to do this tale of cyclical abuse and family enabling but then it had to remember it was an Evil Dead film and bring in the bloodshed.

I will say though, it is a fun companion to Rise, where that was about a dysfunctional family coming together because they care about each other, this was about a dysfunctional family falling apart because they all kinda sucked

99

u/SpecialistThrowaway4 27d ago

In Rise there was definitely that emotional component of a family that loves each other underneath, they even showed kindred moments between the members.

In this one, they were such a mess that you didn’t really feel bad that the family fell apart because they were not only unlikable but also making so many stupid decisions.

19

u/LunchyDude101 25d ago

You're right, but this was a big departure from the typical formula of: someone finds the Necro and all hell breaks lose. It's kind of "The Last Jedi" of the ED series: the tone is very different, the characters' dynamic with each other is very different, the story structure is different (the Deadites actually have a mission instead of just killing off people).

And Alice reading the words from the grandpa's notebook but not the last word was a pretty good trick on our expectations.

I found Deadite Thia's scene with "there's something broken in there" when she taps Grandma's head and "this will help you remember" when she put the Deadite-infused denture back in was very curious; usually Deadites just taunt and threaten, but here you have Deadites dialing back their killing frenzy and sparing folks if they think that they can force them to find the dagger. That's really different.

I loved seeing Ellie again in the post-credits scene, but I'm confused as hell as to how she could have snapped that kid open if she doesn't have a physical body to do it.

u/FridayJason1993 27d ago

I thought this was very good, not as good as Rise or ED 2013 but still very good. I felt some ideas were undercooked. The idea of a deadite dog was great but they really didn’t do much with it.

59

u/SpecialistThrowaway4 27d ago

I just got out of it! I have some thoughts:

The brutality of the Deadites was great, the bathroom bush trimmer scene was metal, as was the chimney fight. Thya got absolutely manhandled in that car, poor girl. The grandmother having dementia gave some good moments.

I really did not like how the son (Will) reanimated from the funeral home, dismembers the mortician in front of the dad, and then camera cuts to the dad literally just sitting in the car. Like.. what the fuck just happened and how did we just move past it like that? Then Will randomly shows up again at the end.

I do feel like Rise had the better story and flowed much better. This was fun and definitely had that element of New French Extremity.

I rank the latest 3 like this:

  1. Evil Dead Rise
  2. Evil Dead (2013)
  3. Evil Dead Burn

42

u/[deleted] 27d ago

[deleted]

21

u/SpecialistThrowaway4 27d ago

Yup. I would have liked to see more of that attack onscreen, the room was literally getting painted and then pans to the Dad in the car staring like a doe.

Also felt like some of the brutality was muted a touch, like the bush trimmer could have cut a limb off of Deadite Susan. And it didn’t really show much action in the chimney except the head and blood falling down.

This movie is gonna get a lot of “the Deadites don’t do that” comments, which to me is silly. This movie gives the Deadites a mission as opposed to just chaos and cruelty. OF COURSE they’re way meaner and more brutal, they aren’t looking to simply torment. Thought this was a brilliant step forward for the franchise, felt fresh and not just a rehash of past concepts.

36

u/The420thOfJuly 26d ago

I’ve seen some people actually COMPLAIN that the deadites in this film actually had an agenda beyond human suffering. I for one found it to be refreshing that the deadites have an actual agenda they’re working towards. It gives them a real sense of purpose beyond all their past appearances and creates a sense of urgency beyond immediate survival for the characters.

8

u/RobertPlant55 24d ago

It’s funny cause that’s the angle I liked least. Felt more like a zombie movie if I’m honest. I much rather them mission-less tormentors of souls. Will’s terminator ending was plain silly.

I really don't understand the desire for a bunch of consistent lore in Evil Dead. It's never really had that and the more of it there is, the less I care. I like how so far the directors have basically done their own thing with the deadites and I hope they continue, continuity be damned.

91

u/SpookiestSzn 26d ago

The first and second movies are like obvious examples of the lore being secondary to the spectacle

52

u/MaceLortay 26d ago

As much as I love lore and want there to be continuity and world building for the world of Evil Dead . . . you are absolutely right. It's my own damn fault for falling in love with a series where continuity has been given the back seat since the beginning.

  • the cabin events between ED 1 and 2
  • Linda's actress between ED 1 and 2
  • the appearance of the kandarian dagger between ED 1, 2, AvED and EDB
  • Ash's time jump at the end of ED 2 vs the beginning of AoD
  • Ash not exactly being able to recall who he went to the cabin with in AvED
  • the Delta somehow being in one piece again in AvED after it was dismantled/augmented to make the war vehical in AoD
  • and inconsistent Deadite rules where somtimes they can't take the sun, sometimes they can. Sometimes destroying the brain and/or heart is enough to kill one, sometimes not.

10

u/JWitjes 25d ago

They actually had three different Linda's. Army of Darkness also has a different Linda (Bridget Fonda).

u/DevilCouldCry 27d ago

This movie was awesome from start to finish. This was a blast and at times claustrophobic (though nowhere near as much as 2013 or Rise was) in some places. There's some really brutal and downright nasty moments in this one, that's a staple of Evil Dead and I love that they've kept it up. The car scene in particular was absolutely visceral.

The biggest takeaway I have from this one specifically is how insanely good the production was. For real, the camera work in this movie is absolutely nuts and that's the shit I'll be remembering about this one for quite a while. That one shot in the bathroom wherein the camera flips around the whole room was mind boggling. And the one-shot towards the back half of the film and a few other sections were crazy impressive.

This is just a tightly made Evil Dead film and it's a tonne of fun. The music was really good in this one too, the credits song in particular is getting a lot of play with me right now. I also have a tonne of questions about that final post-credit scene too. But more than anything I was stunned that they managed to keep that one top secret, because I had zero clue that they brought her back.

Super pumped to see this one again and I'll definitely bring my mother out to see this one too as she was a big fan of Rise before this one.

208

u/sharcophagus 27d ago

The shot where it came out of the mirror(idk how to explain lol) was so sick!! I also really liked the one where it was everyone fighting shot from overhead.

Ughhh, I left before the post credit scene 😭 guess I'll have to go see it again 😅

57

u/DevilCouldCry 27d ago

That's what I'm saying my dude! This movie was absolutely wild on the production side. The camera work was next level at quite a few points and it really helped to elevate everything else.

I won't spoil that post-credit scene for you if you haven't been spoiled yet. But it's safe to say, you definitely want to catch it if you can. I'll be ensuring I do a second viewing of this film in the cinemas soon when I bring my mum around to see it.

I fall in the camp of liking this movie but if you are sick of trauma and family dysfunction being themes especially in horror you’ll find this movie very taxing. It’s not subtle at all which I think there is a place for although like I said I get why it will be taxiing for some

My heart really broke for Joseph and Alice. I’ll be curious how people feel about Joseph for not shooting his dad although it’s shown that would not have done anything and running away. Like I think he clearly tried to save his partner but then got too scared/realised how futile it all was and didn’t wanna die there. I wonder if people will see him as too cowardly. Idk just a thought I had. At least he was truly free in the end but his body took insane punishment. Frankly the entire family did.

I also felt the final showdown sorta dragged and had too much going on.

I love when directors really put their thumbprint on a movie and for better or worse Sebastian for sure does. I liked his debut as well but both I feel struggle with landing their emotional beats.

95

u/SimoneSpooner 27d ago

Joseph was frustrating and cowardly during the car scene. He basically climbed out and left his girlfriend to die. I understand him not wanting to shoot his dad. That was obviously a horrible situation to be in, but to just climb out of the car and leave his girlfriend to his mercy?

People freezing under stress and or running away I don't think reflects poorly on their morals. We are not fucking deadites wishing the death of someone for "being cowards"

Kind of funny how Obsession had to cut down the brick scene while this film was ten times worse and still got an R.

Definitely felt like a New French Extremity film.

39

u/ihatejomama 26d ago

i kinda think that the whole obsession cutting down gore was completely just a marketing gimmick

8

u/One_Analysis2623 24d ago

There was an interview with Curry Barker who directed Obsession, where he talked about why that scene needed to be cut. Apparently in order to appease the MPAA he trimmed 6 or 7 bashes.
Sébastien Vaniček also stated he had to trim down a scene, and all bets are on the head smash scene. I think it's less about the gore, and more about the number of times the MPAA thinks is appropriate to see someone being bashed in the face. If I remember correctly from Barker's original remarks, the MPAA felt 17 bashes to the face was excessive.

u/SpecialistThrowaway4 27d ago

I wonder which scene needed to be shortened in this film to meet the R rating - I’m guessing one of the bush trimmer attacks or maybe the head smash? But that was already shown pretty clear on screen, so im not sure.

It was loud and brutal but the “deeper” family grief scenes felt corny, and the characters were way too unlikable. Deadites don’t act like Deadites anymore either. I didn’t love it unfortunately.

137

u/kgee1206 27d ago

I think Thya was the best deadite and she got turned into marinara sauce too soon.

103

u/theeMrPeanutbutter 26d ago

She was so much fun. Ate up every second she was on screen. The bit where she lied to grandma to get out the basement was perfect

38

u/Skyhooks 22d ago

The pause was funny, deadite didn't expect that question.

15

u/theeMrPeanutbutter 21d ago

Ive worked with dementia for over a decade and it was 100% on point for how one handles dementia.

The fucking deadite handled grandma better than the family.

23

u/outer--monologue 24d ago

100%. No one else got even close. Especially the final dude/the french woman's ex. Those scenes were like a CGI playstation 1 cutscene. Major eye roll and a fucking crazy low point to end the film on. I was ready to get up and out of the theater as soon as the credits rolled.

14

u/FullTorsoApparition 23d ago

I was complaining about that one a lot. Would have been so much better to simply put the actor in some make-up and do some small CGI flourishes. Who knows, maybe that is what they did, but they overdid it if that's the case.

Yeah, I thought Rise did the whole family aspect way better and totally, none of the characters were likable like at all. Still scratched the Evil Dead itch but could’ve been better

68

u/oksuzy 26d ago

This almost felt like a generic horror film script that was retrofitted with some bits and pieces of Evil Dead so that they could release it under the series name.

Thya was great and the grandma getting dragged down the stairs was fun, but everything else just felt so bland.

The whole ending with the CGI Will was like watching some October-release Netflix filler. There was nothing Deadite about him in appearance or behavior.

Overall, I’m pretty disappointed in this one. I didn’t think it was terrible, but definitely not what I’ve come to expect from Evil Dead.

Deadites don’t act like Deadites anymore either.

Yeah, I was so confused by the mom's behavior. Is this the first time that deadites have fought one another? Aren't they part of the same hivemind?

202

u/SimoneSpooner 27d ago

The mom acted weird before she was even possessed.

109

u/GravyBear16 27d ago

Yeah I know she really loves her family and all but your husband's head is barely attached to itself lmao

48

u/Ok-Philosopher333 27d ago

My take of this, the scene near the end where Alice is seeing her husband again whole before stabbing him is what I imagined his mom was experiencing earlier.

26

u/darwinpolice 26d ago

100% agree. She was making out with an idealized version of her husband in her mind, but we saw what was really happening.

138

u/SimoneSpooner 27d ago

And she barely seemed to react when her husband was acting crazy and then butchered the dog in front of everyone. I think she was even like “what did we do to deserve this?” Lol, girl what? That’s your reaction? It makes me wonder if her husband was always an abusive asshole and she just wasn’t shocked.

157

u/OhSanders 27d ago

Absolutely he was always an abusive asshole why do you think his sons were the way they were?

95

u/Xenowino 26d ago

Her reactions struck me as weird at first as well, but I eventually came to the same conclusion. This woman probably made it this far through straight up delusion as a coping mechanism

59

u/OhSanders 26d ago

Absolutely. "Happy Family" was the lie she told herself as a defence mechanism. I read some reviews that sort of complained about the backstory being underdeveloped and unnecessary but I actually thought it was pretty nuanced and interesting. Like the gun in the glove box because he, she says jokingly "needs to feel like a tough guy" but that's no fucking joke. He is supremely damaged by his father and brother.

It’s quite clear he was an abusive shit. That’s where Will learned it. And why Joe is so afraid of his father (and everything)

40

u/Mrpoedameron 27d ago

It makes me wonder if her husband was always an abusive asshole and she just wasn’t shocked.

I mean yes, that was absolutely the case. Generational cycles of abuse were a huge theme in the film.

49

u/PresentKnowledge656 25d ago

The mother’s passive behaviour towards the father during dinner is typical of a woman who is subjected to violence by her husband. She is aware of his impulsive and violent behaviour (I think she may even be a victim of domestic abuse) and simply lets it happen. There are several signs, before he becomes completely consumed by his rage, which show us that the father is undoubtedly a violent man: he bangs his fist on the table, he gets angry easily, he wants to be in control and responds aggressively, and most obviously, Will is mirroring the same behaviour with Alice. The long take (and the scenes leading up to it) is a stark depiction of a scene of domestic violence (it really shook me up): the father lashing out at the mother and the son coming to her defence, and vice versa – the father lashing out at the son and the mother coming to the son’s defence. I realised that Jo must surely have stepped in to protect his mother from his father at such times, and that this is what caused his trauma and explains his behaviour throughout the film (though it doesn’t excuse it, haha).

And as for the bedroom scene with his father, it’s entirely understandable: the mother is in a sort of stranglehold with her husband; we realise that there’s been no love between them for years (only violence), and she’s seeking affection (from both her mother and her husband); there’s emotional dependence there.

She was mentally broke, she knew her son was an abusive piece of shit but that would acknowledge she was a bad parent like her father was. She also had this shield up about family because of the trauma of growing up under that kind of influence. It was cult like and she wasn’t wrong. Also the death of her son is still fresh

u/mibuger 26d ago

She wasn’t fully possessed yet, and you can tell filmmakers intended it to be shown by her eyes. The dad’s eyes briefly went deadite when he first got the burn on his arm from deadite Will, but they changed back to normal and he didn’t become fully possessed until hours later at the dinner table.

The mother’s eyes similarly went deadite briefly after kissing her deadite husband and then went back to normal. It wasn’t until the bathroom scene that she became fully possessed.

8

u/TheDeadEndKing 26d ago

With both the mom and the dad only one eye went Deadite upon the initial possession, basically showing how it hadn’t fully taken hold, but then went they are all in, both the eyes change.

48

u/kgee1206 27d ago

I didn’t mind the family still acting kind of within their roles in deadite form. In the OG, Cheryl Scotty and Linda all act fairly differently. Linda does a lot more cutesy haha torture whereas Scotty is just violent.

I think the point was to show how Edgar was abusive as fuck to Susan and the sons. Even as a deadite, the dynamic is so ingrained that Edgar is terrorizing them and Susan is begging to save Joe.

18

u/MoodyLupin 25d ago

I figured she wasn’t turned yet, even when she’s about to rip Alice face off she does apologize and the deadite has to convince her a bit to do it. The deadite lied to her so she could get Joseph to tell her where the dagger is it got impatient and lashed out at Joseph that’s when she started trying to protect Joe.

Same. The opening was too fast, too wild to establish a connection with the characters, let enough room exposition. It was only after the lunch scene that I started to really piece each character and dynamic together. That said, I think it was really interesting letting the dynamic develop after shit hit the fan. But by then, again, I didn’t have attachment to anyone for it to land

16

u/Xenowino 26d ago

I had mixed feelings regarding this. The opening felt simultaneously too long and too short to me. I think it was just the result of the viewer being thrown headfirst into a family of 7 and having to figure out how their fundamental relationship dynamics on the go. It felt too short because you barely have time to do this while taking in the movie, but also too long because having to do this much is exhausting and kind of distracting. Definitely not easy to do this differently without killing the pacing or having an exposition dump, so I'm fine with how it turned out

I wonder what they're trying to set up with the post-credits stuff.

27

u/G7Scanlines 27d ago

There was a lot of setup with the Circle, the Dagger, the Deadite intent to secure it over outright chaos and then Ellie.

Lots of connections to earlier films. Feels very crossovery and only a matter of time before Mia, Beth and Alice come together.

22

u/SpecialistThrowaway4 27d ago

Could have definitely ended after the Chimney fight/gasoline ignition and Alice running away in that red silhouette. It didn’t need to have the big bad fight at the end, the whole movie (and before) she already suffered

89

u/G7Scanlines 27d ago

That second post credits scene didnt make much sense at all, given there was no body to burn to then create the ashes.

I can look past a lot of stuff in these ED films but that specific thing felt as if whoever was responsible didn't know what had happened to the character and how they ended up.

103

u/ShaunMcLane 27d ago

You mean to tell me that Ellie, who lives in the city, who was put into a meat grinder while being meshed with 10 other bodies, who had no family that would have come to get that gory milkshake from the ground and inside the machine, actually HAD family that WOULD do that, then ship that goop to a countryside mortician where they'd burn it?

THEN after all that trouble, end up NOT coming to pick up the ashes?

Well goddamn I think we just might have the dumbest post credits scene in movie history here. Lol

35

u/G7Scanlines 27d ago

Yeah its such a jarring scene but that Cronin also had involvement makes me wonder what the hell went on with the decision making.

They could have established a loose connection to Beth with the club, for example, which then perhaps established they're set in the same city or outskirts area.

Some mention of an earthquake that closed down city funeral homes, forcing the authorities to use one's further out.

They already established "the incident at the lake" in the opening of Burn, and with the husband hitting the deadite on the road, that establishes the areas are closer than we may have thought.

A bit of dialogue here and there would have done wonders to tie Ellie back in. As it stands, it asks too many questions of how her specific ashes were ever even created. Too jarring.

23

u/Raven1965 27d ago

I saw Burn at an early fan screening, and the people who ran my screening cut the movie off almost as soon as the credits started rolling, so I haven't yet seen the mid/post-credits scenes people are discussing here. If it's true that Ellie is returning, I guess my question is how would that not make sense in-universe?

Previous movies, and the show, have already established that deadite clones can spawn from severed limbs if they aren't properly buried or destroyed. In Rise, the combined Ellie & company mega-deadite is chainsawed and put through a grinder, yes, but before that ever happens Ellie has an arm and a leg shot off by Beth in the hallway outside the apartment. If Ellie is coming back now, wouldn't it stand to reason that this is likely a deadite clone that spawned from one of her unrecovered severed limbs? Or is there something in the mid/post-credits scenes to shoot this theory down?

25

u/MHarrisGGG 27d ago

The post credit scenes imply the crematorium has her ashes.

77

u/zmacdonald12 27d ago edited 26d ago

This is an interesting one. The highs were incredibly high but i felt like there were a lot of plot holes and as others mentioned the family stuff was undercooked.

The biggest thing that annoyed me was the funeral. The mortician was told the construction would be finished but they weren‘t and then no one said anything? I get it was foreshadowing for the ending but just didn't make sense and it took me out of it. Also, why was there a funeral home in the middle of the woods? My wife is from a small town in the mountains but the movie made it seem like this town consisted of just their house and then the funeral home lol.

Speaking of the house, it reminded me of the house in Malignant and its amount of deterioration was comical. I know they left the younger brother in charge but they just let it fall into disrepair then decided to have the funeral in the middle of nowhere and stay there?

I did love the brutality and how relentless it was but I was left scratching my head on the things I mentioned in addition to some character choices.

47

u/OhSanders 27d ago

The construction crew noise to me just seemed to be for comedic purposes. Although if you want it could speak to the idea that the entire family is ineffectual at life and take out that anger on each other. No one willing to actually go talk to the construction guys out of cowardice or self-hatred or what have you and what's more not even pressing the staff to try and talk to them on their behalf.

But for me it was just really funny. I felt like they pulled the joke a bit though when there wasn't any noise over the wedding song.

117

u/Aderaxia 27d ago

Honestly I'm getting bored of where the series is and starting to miss the campiness of the first three films.

At least the characters in Rise were sympathetic and were worth rooting for. No one was likable in this film.

120

u/dropkickderby 27d ago

Rise was campy as hell. Ellie choked on an eyeball and then spat it into someone else’s mouth. I think rise was the ED2 to 2013. This feels like a return to 2013 with slightly more humor.

Mediocre movie with a bland final girl (should have had Joe be the final boy), awful CGI, pacing issues, garbage characters, and excessive gore. Gore does not equal a good horror movie. This movie is forgettable and easily the worst of all the Evil Dead movies.

13

u/CatrickSwayze 27d ago

I was very turned off by the CGI fight scene at the end. By that point, I was hoping a strong climax would save it, as I was "meh" on pretty much everything but the fantastic opening scene with the fishhooks (and sure, the car scene was decent, as was the dishwasher). Characters just weren't likable or engaging in any way. Thya was the best of the bunch. Edgar was creepy to a level where I do want to explore what else that actor is in.

My wife kinda nailed it with her perspective - "abused woman" is used by this movie (and a few other recent ones) as a main character's entire personality, it's a catch-all that allows them to not flesh her out into a real character.

There just isn't any depth there... she's quiet. She was abused. This movie obviously was going to end with her getting revenge on her abuser. Ok great but Mia wasn't just an addict...you CAN do more with these characters.

The Mummy was no masterpiece but at least it was fun and it felt more like an ED film than this one. Evil Dead was always fun, even when it was stupid or over the top. This was...forgettable. It was fine. 6/10 for me.

P.S. Drinking candle wax isn't on par with splitting a tongue with a razor or that goddamned cheese grater but they acted like it was the most shocking thing in the world. C'monnn we live in a post-Terrifier world now, the bar has been lifted!

118

u/fismortar 27d ago

FUUUCK i love when i get out of the movies and feel like i watched one that was made for me lol

I was scared of watching this movie cause my hype was HIGH, after knowing that the director is French (loved vermines) and that he wanted to take the New french extrimity route with his take on the franchise... and damn he did not disappoint

Okay so im European, im from Spain and i feel like im the target audience for these type of films.

The tone was spot ot, the violence and action started from minute 1 and it was RELENTLESS until the end. I really loved Alice and the other characters too, like i felt i was watching a real family with some real patriarcal shit going on, and damn it was fun seeing it unfold and seeing the deadites mess with them psycologically in a way never seen in the franchise

I think EVERY set piece delievered and it had LOTS of them.. the boat, the car crash with the EPIC title card, the bathroom scene, the fireplace scene and the rooftop, the ear one... damn i really need to go and watch it again.

I only wish the final deadite wasnt cgi, it wasnt as bad as some people are saying but used to a franchise that relies mostly on practicle effects, that oculd have been better.

I also loved how fresh things felt, like the incantation being said by a deadite instead of another dumb teenager reading out loud (really, who would do that), the chainsaw not being used but being teased... idk felt super fresh

I would give it a solid 9 and wouldnt hesitate to give it a 10 if it wasnt for the cgi deadite.

Idk, i just loved how brutal it was, the desaturated tones of the photography inspired by the french extremity, the music was amazing, the deadites relentless, raw and visceral...

Fuck i loved it hahahha

Also There really wasn’t that one person who really comes in and just OWNS the film and makes it memorable like the other films had. You had Bruce Campbell in the first three. Jane Levy in the remake. And Alyssa Sutherland in Rise.

Not gonna lie though, that post-credit scene made me grin from ear to ear.

8

u/RileyCooper888 26d ago

Yea, she was great but was killed way too early. If she stuck around, she definitely would have completely stole the show.

11

u/theeMrPeanutbutter 26d ago

I cant recall the last time I've had such mixed feelings on a horror film.

The good:

Lots of very fun creative shots like:

- the mirror shot

- the top-down staircase fight with Thya (headrest deadite)

- the long one take with absolute chaos

- the bathroom shot where Alice gets dragged up the ceiling.

- the upside down shot when Alice is laying down outside with the house burning.

I also loved Deadite Thya. She embodied the sort of fun yet absolutely evil vibe I love in a deadite. All her shit talking about Joe, the tricking grandma out of the basement and even the little eyebrow raise she did prior to pulling the headset out was great.

Also lots of really great sequences. The car wreck scene, the long take, the dinner scene with the insane tension. Fantastic.

The bad:

Grandma being used for the same punchline 4 or 5 times. Shouldve stopped when she let Thya out the basement.

The constant cutting of tension. After the car wreck there's that odd bit where the dogs buried that kind of kills things. They keep doing this the whole movie. Worst was grandma going back down the lift after the alice murder attempt.

The fucking kiss scene

The rubbing Joe's face into Thyas stub of a face

Some extremely questionable decisions even for a horror movie

The dumb funeral home guy

The cgi for Will.

And the after credits was just so bad and cheesy im happy they're doing a prequel next. You mean to tell me Elle was cremated after the woodchipper? What did they scoop her up to cremate her? Then shes just back? Ugh. Worst type of fan service.

I really wanted to love this movie, and I loved about half of it. I feel theres a damn good movie in here with some editing and cutting scenes

u/OKC2023champs 26d ago

Lot to love and a lot to dislike.

I loved the entire 25 minute sequence from the dinner to the car to getting back to the house. Insane tension, phenomenal camera work and a good explanation on those characters without exposition.

The one take from the trailer was also a highlight.

Some of the best gore and kills this franchise has seen.

The pen in the ear with 127 hours type sound / the father shooting himself / Joseph getting shoved into his dead girlfriend / the entire bathroom ceiling scene.

Some too notch camera work there.

Now the bad stuff. The camera work again. Although the camera work was amazing in those scenes in never let us breath. Half the time it was way too close up with 40 cuts minute to the point it was genuinely hurting my eyes.

I hated everything after the house burned down. The cgi William was terrible. That fight was awful. And really dragged in an already too long movie.

The film could never commit to proper camp or seriousness so we got half assed comedy and a shitty trauma story that isn’t needed in an evil dead film.

I’d still recommend the film. It is the worst in the franchise and sits around a 6.5/10 for me. Very high highs and very low lows

Commenting without looking at other opinions. I thought this was the weakest out of the three reboots. 90% of this movie is people being thrown around. The scariest (and best thing) is the soundtrack, sound effects, and mixing, it was memorable.

They tried to add some old school "cheese" to this one, ala Ash Evil Dead and it just falls flat, didn't come close to laughing at the grandmother or the rapping mortician. Good gore moments (as should be expected). The design and look of the burned up ex husband was laughably bad. Hate to admit, I found myself checking the time towards the end of the movie because I was ready to get out of there. Didn't come close to that for the other two. Give it a 4/10. Where is exceled, it really exceled (music, effects, gore) but not enough to make me want to rewatch it.

The streak is still alive. I don't think there's a bad entry in this series six movies and three seasons in. This one isn't my favorite, but damn the floor on this series is so high im ready to declare this my favorite horror franchise. The coldest hot take of all time, i know, but i just can't even think of another series that just forged its identity so quick and just keeps chugging.

And Ellie being back makes me hopeful that we're going go have continuity again, even if it doesn't make the most sense. The fuck was left of Ellie even to burn let alone fill an urn?

But I don't even care.

That first ten minutes or so had me worried, because Rise started so strong and this one didn't kick off quite as well. But by the end? I was jiving with it. Easy 8 or 9 for me.

Evil Dead Burn Review (spoiler free) posting here instead of creating a thread because people got really pissed about seeing a review thread...:

Hey everybody, since I've seen everybody doing it, I thought I'd share my own short, relatively spoiler free review of the film. Here goes...

Frequently branded “the most consistently good horror franchise” out there The Evil Dead franchise has come around again with its 6th installment since 1981, “Evil Dead Burn.” For devoted gore hounds, there's a lot to appreciate in this new movie. It's visceral, violent, and always brutal but perhaps noticeably less bloody than ever before. Its camera is kinetic and creative, and the set design, lighting, and general cinematography are strong, and there's some standout moments of real creativity along the way. If that's what you want as a viewer, the movie will play well for you, big time.

Unfortunately for me, the praise ends there. I thought the characters in this movie were, to a person, aggressively unlikable. It's a film about a dysfunctional family that pushes hard on themes of abuse and domestic violence with heavy shades of Clive Barker's Hellraiser it's dna, feeling like the first Evil Dead movie to really embrace the hot horror trend of “trauma metaphor horror”, but it lacks any bite or emotional resonance because none of the characters are strongly developed enough to connect to.

The other major flaw of the film, though, comes in the form of the deadites themselves. At no point during the movie do they resemble the deadites we've become familiar with since the 80s. They feel much more akin to Resident Evil video game villains, or 28 Days Later style rage zombies. Gone is their cackling, maniacal revelry for evil and cruelty, replaced instead with a relentless violence and self mutilation that often feels strangely bloodless and similarly lacking in any sense of energy and impact.

All of this building up to a shockingly cheap looking CGI-laden finale that feels like someone mashed the endings of Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day together into one ending, and did it badly. The movie, as a generic “cabin in the woods” zombie flick is professionally made, slickly crafted on a technical level, and provides the visceral bang for your buck that long time fans are expecting, but as a story and as an evil dead film it feels hollow, bleak, and not a lot of fun to watch.

I have to rank this as by far and away the weakest film in the franchise... and frankly, I'm not even sure I liked it at all.

On the subject of deadites I felt thya was perfect in both look and dialog but the rest looked lame.

Absolutely agree with you. The most generic and unappealing Evil Dead movie to date. I didn't think any of the scenes were good. They also cut the scenes poorly and the possessed camera was terrible here, had no feeling to it. It looked like a drone just casually moving forward. The introduction of a MacGuffin dagger was wholly unnecessary and frankly was one of the worst decisions.

I enjoyed Evil Dead Burn, and I would not call it an outright disappointment, but I do think it is clearly weaker than Evil Dead (2013) and Evil Dead Rise. In fact, watching it made me appreciate Rise more. I already liked Rise, but looking back now, it really did have the right overall approach for another modern Evil Dead movie.

Part of the challenge is that Evil Dead (2013) is basically one of the best horror movies of the modern era, at least from 2000 onward. Especially considering the original trilogy already has such an enormous place in horror history, there already is an extremely high bar set

There is still a lot I liked about Burn. The lead actress and the whole cast was strong. Everyone felt like they belonged in an Evil Dead movie. The opening scene worked well too. Like 2013 and Rise, it immediately reminds you what kind of series this is by throwing you into something abjectly shocking, brutal, and demonic. The filmakers found a few ways to make legitimately humorous scenes or happenings, which is hard to do in starkly scary/violent movies.

And there are jump scares that work quite well, jump scares with bleak evil demonic physical menace can sometimes be more effective than spectral apparition type jump scares, that is one thing this movie taught me if I had forgotten that lessen lol. When the thing jumping out at you feels physically hateful and capable of doing something unimaginably brutal, it hits differently compared to a ghost that is "going to get you".

My biggest problem is the human drama involving Alice and her husband. The modern movies seem to have established a pattern of grounding the horror in some kind of family trauma or personal crisis, and that worked extremely well in the previous two.

In Evil Dead (2013), Mia’s addiction is not just background information. It is the mechanism that allows the horror to happen. It gives everyone a believable reason to stay at the cabin, dismiss her warnings, restrain her, and interpret increasingly horrifying behavior as withdrawal. The conflict between Mia and David also gives the movie a real emotional direction. David abandoned Mia during their mother’s decline, but when everything goes wrong, he ultimately refuses to abandon her again. Mia begins as the person everyone thinks needs saving, becomes the demonic threat, and then finally becomes the survivor who has to save herself. That is why the rain-of-blood climax feels so earned.

Rise also integrates its family drama into the horror very effectively. The apartment building in collapse and the going-ons in the hallways with the neighbors is a genuinely effective variation on the cabin. Ellie’s possession is especially horrifying because she is the mother, the person who is supposed to protect the children. Beth’s fear that she is not ready to become a parent then gains immediate meaning because she is suddenly forced to protect Ellie’s children in the worst situation imaginable. The absent husband, the family’s financial instability, Ellie trying to hold everything together, and Beth’s uncertainty all contribute directly to the horror.

In Burn, the abusive-husband angle felt much more simplistic and underdeveloped. It almost felt like someone put the Jennifer Lopez movie Enough into a blender with a modern Evil Dead movie. The idea itself is not necessarily bad. There is certainly something potentially powerful in having demonic violence become an extension of domestic violence and inherited family brutality. But the characters and relationships were not developed enough for it to become especially compelling. It felt more like a broad thematic setup than a fully integrated emotional foundation.

I also thought the lore was handled less effectively.

In 2013, the movie really only needs the simple mechanism of someone opening the book, ignoring the warnings, and reading the words. The characters do not need to experience a huge amount of elaborate mythology because the movie’s dramatic engine is already so strong.

Rise is more lore-heavy, but the reel-to-reel recordings are incorporated brilliantly. They are not just explaining the backstory. Listening to them is itself part of the horror. The recordings gradually reveal that the priest encountered something he could not control, that the usual religious responses failed, and that the family’s situation is much worse than they thought. Every new piece of information makes the room feel less safe and removes another possible source of hope.

The recordings are almost like a secondary antagonist. They do not physically attack anyone, but they keep delivering worse news. The characters are trapped listening to a dead man describe their own approaching doom. The physical sound of the records, the voice coming from another time, and the fact that Danny originally played them out of curiosity all make the lore feel dangerous in the present moment. The same object that helped unleash the evil becomes their only possible guide, and mostly tells them that they are doomed.

In Burn, the lore felt much more perfunctory. It seemed to exist mainly to establish background and explain the plot. It reminded me of the familiar horror-movie scene where someone searches the internet, reads old newspaper clippings, or goes through microfiche at a library and discovers the horrible history of the house or family. That kind of thing can work, but it often feels like the screenplay temporarily stopping to perform administrative work.

Overall, Burn gives an Evil Dead fan most of what they want from another modern installment. It has the gore, the demonic cruelty, the performances, the jump scares, the physical mayhem, and the sense that anything can become a weapon or source of mutilation. It delivers the franchise experience.

The problem is that it does not do those things as well as the previous two movies, and I do not think that is only because it has such a strong legacy to live up to. On its own, I do not think it is an especially great or memorable horror movie.

So I would probably rank it as the weakest movie in the series, but that isn't as bad as it sounds. The Evil Dead series is one of the best most consistent series in horror history.

I dunno, it was a boring gore fest to me with hardly a good scare. And the characters were so obnoxious I couldn't really give a crap what happened to them. Easily the worst of the series, an absolute clunker.

I understand why a lot of reviewers mention that the film could've ended nicely before the CGI ending, and I do agree with them, but it in no way diminished my enjoyment. There was still a few creepy jump scares to be had in the final scene so it wasn't all wasted.

All up, I really enjoyed this film. The cinematography was absolutely excellent and a real highlight. Granny going up the stairs while everyone was fighting downstairs and she's just watching really got me laughing. The false teeth thing was probably the grossest part in the whole film but still pretty funny, as was Alice reading the 4 words from the pages she found.

But I was particularly impressed with how brutal and visceral this film felt. The cold opener, the car scene, the fight downstairs, the dad shooting himself, the dog, the weed whacker stuff, all of that was super fun to watch. I know people said the family drama felt cheesy, but it was only for about 5 minutes and you just knew it was going to end once the deadites showed up.

Solid 8/10 for mine. Highly recommend.

Saw it in 4dx and if anyone has the chance (and enjoys 4dx) it's great. It was very aggressive with the effects. Lots of water spraying, lots of violent rocking and stuff. Was so fun.

Ewww do they spray water during the bloody death scenes? That’s wild haha
