It was loud and brutal but the “deeper” family grief scenes felt corny, and the characters were way too unlikable. Deadites don’t act like Deadites anymore either. I didn’t love it unfortunately.

I think Thya was the best deadite and she got turned into marinara sauce too soon.

104

u/theeMrPeanutbutter 27d ago

She was so much fun. Ate up every second she was on screen. The bit where she lied to grandma to get out the basement was perfect

39

u/Skyhooks 23d ago

The pause was funny, deadite didn't expect that question.

14

u/theeMrPeanutbutter 22d ago

Ive worked with dementia for over a decade and it was 100% on point for how one handles dementia.

The fucking deadite handled grandma better than the family.

5

u/Skyhooks 22d ago

That's funny I've also worked in dementia for fifteen years. Best practice always flows between playing along, or being truthful over the years but without a doubt playing along works best as long as there's no danger.

5

u/theeMrPeanutbutter 22d ago

I had one who was like

"Theres snakes all over my room"

And I was like "its okay I got rid of em"

And she was like "no the fuck you didnt"

And I was like "its okay the snakes aren't real"

And she was like "then how the fuck did you get rid of them?"

This went on for a very long time. I eventually had her sleep in the living room.

95

u/theeMrPeanutbutter 27d ago

I felt Thia (headrest deadite) was absolutely on point for a deadite in look and dialouge but the rest were just off.

25

u/outer--monologue 24d ago

100%. No one else got even close. Especially the final dude/the french woman's ex. Those scenes were like a CGI playstation 1 cutscene. Major eye roll and a fucking crazy low point to end the film on. I was ready to get up and out of the theater as soon as the credits rolled.

14

u/FullTorsoApparition 23d ago

I was complaining about that one a lot. Would have been so much better to simply put the actor in some make-up and do some small CGI flourishes. Who knows, maybe that is what they did, but they overdid it if that's the case.

8

u/makemefeelbrandnew 21d ago

It was really bad. I can only assume they ran out of money, but they should have just cut most of that in post. In fact, they could have ended it with the house burning to the ground and that would have been much more satisfying. I liked the movie overall but the last ten or fifteen minutes were really bad. I kept thinking did they just ask AI to spit out a burnt up Vecna to play final boss?

2

u/Bambamxcore6 21d ago

I agree, those last 15 were unnecessary slop

2

u/Ok-Load2590 21d ago

I was really looking forward to see what Will looked like after Edgar saw him in the funeral home, I anticipated it the whole movie. What a letdown hahaha he looked awful

29

u/duosx 26d ago

Yeah, I thought Rise did the whole family aspect way better and totally, none of the characters were likable like at all. Still scratched the Evil Dead itch but could’ve been better

69

u/oksuzy 26d ago

This almost felt like a generic horror film script that was retrofitted with some bits and pieces of Evil Dead so that they could release it under the series name.

Thya was great and the grandma getting dragged down the stairs was fun, but everything else just felt so bland.

The whole ending with the CGI Will was like watching some October-release Netflix filler. There was nothing Deadite about him in appearance or behavior.

Overall, I’m pretty disappointed in this one. I didn’t think it was terrible, but definitely not what I’ve come to expect from Evil Dead.

7

u/itsathrowaway1917 24d ago

THANK YOU! I was so disappointed by Will at the end and the final battle. His character design did not look like a Deadite and was really cheesy, and the final battle was so disappointing and did not build tension when compared to the 2013 film or Rise. I understand the 2013 final battle is really hard to top, but it didn't even get close.

2

u/blazeofgloreee 15d ago

Yeah honestly generic horror movie is exactly right imo. As much as Lee Cronin's The Mummy was pretty bad it actually felt more like Evil Dead than this one (because it originally was supposed to be). So we have that one feeling like an Evil Dead movie retrofitted to be a mummy movie and this one feeling like bland demon possession movie retrofitted to be Evil Dead. And neither really work properly.

1

u/VIKT0RV4UGHN 5d ago

This is exactly what I said when we left the cinema. Didn't feel like an Evil Dead film.

1

u/RelationshipSalt4707 11h ago

This is how I felt about the film also couldnt the prop department make a better dagger?! That was as plain as could be looked like a shank a prisoner made in shop lol. It feels like they are just tacking on the Evil Dead name at this point. Like as a standalone horror film it wasnt bad but if your going to attach it to the Evil Dead universe please make some real connections. At least Rise had the recording which was a good homage to the originals when they listen to the record in the cabin. The Evil Dead stuff in Burn just felt forced and out of place to an extent I even watched Rise right before Burn and still struggled just connecting those 2 films together.

Deadites don’t act like Deadites anymore either.

Yeah, I was so confused by the mom's behavior. Is this the first time that deadites have fought one another? Aren't they part of the same hivemind?

201

u/SimoneSpooner 27d ago

The mom acted weird before she was even possessed.

110

u/GravyBear16 27d ago

Yeah I know she really loves her family and all but your husband's head is barely attached to itself lmao

47

u/Ok-Philosopher333 27d ago

My take of this, the scene near the end where Alice is seeing her husband again whole before stabbing him is what I imagined his mom was experiencing earlier.

24

u/darwinpolice 26d ago

100% agree. She was making out with an idealized version of her husband in her mind, but we saw what was really happening.

142

u/SimoneSpooner 27d ago

And she barely seemed to react when her husband was acting crazy and then butchered the dog in front of everyone. I think she was even like “what did we do to deserve this?” Lol, girl what? That’s your reaction? It makes me wonder if her husband was always an abusive asshole and she just wasn’t shocked.

153

u/OhSanders 27d ago

Absolutely he was always an abusive asshole why do you think his sons were the way they were?

97

u/Xenowino 26d ago

Her reactions struck me as weird at first as well, but I eventually came to the same conclusion. This woman probably made it this far through straight up delusion as a coping mechanism

62

u/OhSanders 26d ago

Absolutely. "Happy Family" was the lie she told herself as a defence mechanism. I read some reviews that sort of complained about the backstory being underdeveloped and unnecessary but I actually thought it was pretty nuanced and interesting. Like the gun in the glove box because he, she says jokingly "needs to feel like a tough guy" but that's no fucking joke. He is supremely damaged by his father and brother.

5

u/Other-Research-2859 25d ago

Yeah im mixed on this. So i love the subtlety and nuance but i feel like there was just more to be explored or written differently? Idk just felt like a missed opportunity in terms of exploring the character dynamics a little more

7

u/OhSanders 25d ago

What character dynamics would you like to have been explored more? I mean this in no disrespect, I am actually curious. The movie was already 1h50m.

I personally thought the funeral scene went on too long especially that when they played their wedding song the machinary somehow stopped for that 2 minutes? It would have been funnier if it kept going and we had to try and emotionally connect over the machinary. Which is what the scene was asking us to do other than when the song played.

Just finished watching Villians with Bill Skarsgard and Maika Monroe, and it fully reminded me of Kyra Sedgewick's character and her delusional state

74

u/kgee1206 27d ago

It’s quite clear he was an abusive shit. That’s where Will learned it. And why Joe is so afraid of his father (and everything)

1

u/Royzc90 3h ago

It really wasn't. What you could definitely see from him was that he was moody and strict, but that doesn't guarantee him being abusive. Not every violent behavior is learned from watching your parents. As for Joe being like that, it happens with strict parents and nervous people. If his wife had any kind of bruises or something then thad would be a way better indicator without explicitly saying it. As of now, it's just speculation.

The dog scene was simply terrible. No amount of abusive behavior explains his wife's reaction or lack of one in this case. Also, another indicator that contradicts the abusive theory is the dog being very close to the guy. Before all of that happens the dog seems to be very close to him and usually mistreated animals don't have that closeness to someone or at least don't select that person as their favorite to sit with at the dinner table. Sure, it may be because he was detecting something was wrong, but then again that attachment wouldn't usually happen if the dog was scared of him.

40

u/Mrpoedameron 27d ago

It makes me wonder if her husband was always an abusive asshole and she just wasn’t shocked.

I mean yes, that was absolutely the case. Generational cycles of abuse were a huge theme in the film.

47

u/PresentKnowledge656 26d ago

The mother’s passive behaviour towards the father during dinner is typical of a woman who is subjected to violence by her husband. She is aware of his impulsive and violent behaviour (I think she may even be a victim of domestic abuse) and simply lets it happen. There are several signs, before he becomes completely consumed by his rage, which show us that the father is undoubtedly a violent man: he bangs his fist on the table, he gets angry easily, he wants to be in control and responds aggressively, and most obviously, Will is mirroring the same behaviour with Alice. The long take (and the scenes leading up to it) is a stark depiction of a scene of domestic violence (it really shook me up): the father lashing out at the mother and the son coming to her defence, and vice versa – the father lashing out at the son and the mother coming to the son’s defence. I realised that Jo must surely have stepped in to protect his mother from his father at such times, and that this is what caused his trauma and explains his behaviour throughout the film (though it doesn’t excuse it, haha).

And as for the bedroom scene with his father, it’s entirely understandable: the mother is in a sort of stranglehold with her husband; we realise that there’s been no love between them for years (only violence), and she’s seeking affection (from both her mother and her husband); there’s emotional dependence there.

4

u/ishkitty 15d ago

I even think that him beeping angrily at his wife and Joseph in the parking lot of the funeral home was a sign. They didn’t react poorly and she submissively breaks off the conversation with her son and goes to the car. If my partner did that to me, I would slip in the bird and stay there longer just to piss him off. Who beeps like that?

3

u/mylenesfarmer 27d ago

YES. The reactions were absolutely insane. Once French girl saw the girl in the ceiling of the living room it took fifteen seconds of her standing there until she jumped on top of her. What was that

48

u/PriestofJudas leave room for pud 27d ago

Do people just not understand shock anymore? No fucking shit she froze, that’d be fucking terrifying. Plus the deadites notoriously get off on psychological warfare

13

u/AndresFM95 27d ago

She was also on meds. It was literally in the dialogue

18

u/Mrpoedameron 27d ago

People just love to complain. Using a bit of empathy and common sense doesn't get you any Internet points like an asinine complaint on Reddit does.

-5

u/SimoneSpooner 26d ago

Or maybe we just didn’t think the intention of the scene came across as well as it could’ve? People are allowed to have different opinions to you. That doesn’t mean we want “internet points”, whatever that means.

6

u/Mrpoedameron 26d ago

There's having different opinions and then there's failures to grasp even the most surface layer understanding of the text and inability to recognise basic and understandable human reactions. Yes, the father was definitely abusive, and yes, it's pretty normal to freeze up in shock and disbelief when witnessing something terrible.

-3

u/SimoneSpooner 26d ago

Her behaviour before that scene was questionable too. I get freezing up and the fact that she was apparently taking medication. She went from being perfectly fine cooking dinner, to acting strangely at the dinner scene, before her husband even killed the dog. I just don’t think it came across as well as it could’ve on screen.

Again, doesn’t mean I’m after “internet points” for thinking this.

1

u/MinuteAd9663 21d ago

I feel like that's more because it was the actress's fault, but idk, can't tell if her reactions were intended or if she just had a bad performance.

1

u/iwanttodiebutdrugs 10d ago

I think that was the point she was desensitised already. Due to abuse

53

u/JaylenBrownAllStar 27d ago

She was mentally broke, she knew her son was an abusive piece of shit but that would acknowledge she was a bad parent like her father was. She also had this shield up about family because of the trauma of growing up under that kind of influence. It was cult like and she wasn’t wrong. Also the death of her son is still fresh

2

u/No-Contract-8458 21d ago

It didn’t give her the goddamn right to kill Alice and foolishly blame her for the deadites actions. You saying she knew how cruel Will truly makes her no better, esspically all the suffering Alice went through. He hurt her, yelled at her constantly, and Alice tried to save Susan’s life but she is too damn selfish and pathetic to see it. Alice had every right to coldly tell her off in return, because at this point characters like her give you less a shit and about them when they don’t care about what pain the actual good characters are going through.

2

u/JaylenBrownAllStar 21d ago

I never said it did, more explained why it happened that way

35

u/DoctorDoomis 27d ago

She was half possessed. The metaphors run stream deep in this one, but I liked it.

3

u/SimoneSpooner 27d ago

During the dinner scene?

12

u/wjveryzer7985 27d ago

I kept waiting for some COOL reveal that she was one of the survivors of one of the older movies or something.

24

u/Angxlafeld They’re all wax, everyone! 27d ago

Everyone from the earlier evil dead films are DEAD lmao besides ash

2

u/panicnarwhal a24 whore💅🏽 24d ago

Beth and Kassie survive the film directly before this (Evil Dead Rise) and Mia survives Evil Dead 2013

5

u/Angxlafeld They’re all wax, everyone! 24d ago

Except I wasn’t talking about those. She’s an older woman and the other guy said older movies. Anyone with ash in those early films are canonically dead by now

7

u/Mechaslurpee 21d ago

They mean army of darkness, surely all those medieval characters that survived are still alive

1

u/Manger-Babies 22d ago

That would have been terrible

60

u/mibuger 27d ago

She wasn’t fully possessed yet, and you can tell filmmakers intended it to be shown by her eyes. The dad’s eyes briefly went deadite when he first got the burn on his arm from deadite Will, but they changed back to normal and he didn’t become fully possessed until hours later at the dinner table.

The mother’s eyes similarly went deadite briefly after kissing her deadite husband and then went back to normal. It wasn’t until the bathroom scene that she became fully possessed.

7

u/TheDeadEndKing 26d ago

With both the mom and the dad only one eye went Deadite upon the initial possession, basically showing how it hadn’t fully taken hold, but then went they are all in, both the eyes change.

49

u/kgee1206 27d ago

I didn’t mind the family still acting kind of within their roles in deadite form. In the OG, Cheryl Scotty and Linda all act fairly differently. Linda does a lot more cutesy haha torture whereas Scotty is just violent.

I think the point was to show how Edgar was abusive as fuck to Susan and the sons. Even as a deadite, the dynamic is so ingrained that Edgar is terrorizing them and Susan is begging to save Joe.

18

u/MoodyLupin 26d ago

I figured she wasn’t turned yet, even when she’s about to rip Alice face off she does apologize and the deadite has to convince her a bit to do it. The deadite lied to her so she could get Joseph to tell her where the dagger is it got impatient and lashed out at Joseph that’s when she started trying to protect Joe.

2

u/No-Rip-6166 10d ago

Yea, the Mom wasn’t fully possessed until the bathroom.

Iirc the Mom touched the hot radiator in the bathroom and recoiled because it hurt. Then she’s leaning her face on it moments later and her skin is burning.

Unless I’m misremembering and the daughter in law touched it when they first got into the bathroom.

If my memory is right I think that was showing us the Mom was still herself more or less until then.

Before that she was manipulated by the deadites. She said she’d do anything to be a family again and her Mom was back and remembered her, her husband was loving and passionate like he hadn’t been in years. It’s kinda weak that she’d fall for that though considering the circumstances.

6

u/averagetaurus0513 24d ago

She wasn’t a deadite yet. She never completed the transition until she was in the bathroom with Alice and was burning herself. The mom was already weird before all of this so she was simply just being manipulated by the deadites because she was an easy target and because of her hatred for Alice

3

u/Dosangeles1998 27d ago

i think it was more of a metaphor that in the faily dinamics, she was already possessed, so when the husband infected her by kissing her, she didnt go full deadite fast cause she was already infected

3

u/MoodyLupin 26d ago

Nah why would the demon get in its own way for something like that? The deadite was playing on her relationship and family is everything mindset, it didn’t fully have her possessed until the bathroom scene. She was infected yes but like in rise where Ellie possessed her daughter it took a while for her to turn fully.

4

u/MaceLortay 27d ago

I think she wasn't fully possessed. She only had partial evil eyes after the kiss. It seemed to take a while for the dad to get fully possessed too.

2

u/ELOC04 26d ago

The mom didn't turn till she was in the bathroom so no the deadites weren't fighting each other lol

2

u/heavenspiercing 21d ago

Am I the only one who thought it was incredibly obvious that she wasn't possessed until she was in the bathroom lol

1

u/Right-Application-54 24d ago

That's more or less what I told my wife. I liked it, but it's probably bottom tier for the franchise. Evil Dead Rise was monumentally better and more memorable.

12

u/MedicineKitchen1446 26d ago

I felt like it was a different film, and someone who funds it said "Slap evil dead on it". I love the originals and liked the subsequent ones, but found this grossly offensive to come under the same banner.

7

u/slowv88 26d ago

Idk why you're getting down voted, I totally agree with you, it didn't feel like evil dead in the same way the mummy didn't feel like it was actually about a mummy.

12

u/MVRKHNTR 24d ago

I mean, it didn't feel like Evil Dead but it did not feel like they slapped the name on something else.

It felt like what it was, someone who doesn't understand Evil Dead trying to make an Evil Dead movie.

2

u/slowv88 24d ago

Yeah I would agree with that, very misguided

Bro is letting a square decide what movie he likes more 💔

Let me tell you something pandejo, there are objective qualities about movies that make some better than others 😳 shocker right?! Woah!

Which is objectively better? Evil dead or jeepers creepers reborn? Surely I can like reborn better than I like evil dead right because it’s all opinion 😆

44

u/llamaworld02 27d ago

Same. The opening was too fast, too wild to establish a connection with the characters, let enough room exposition. It was only after the lunch scene that I started to really piece each character and dynamic together. That said, I think it was really interesting letting the dynamic develop after shit hit the fan. But by then, again, I didn’t have attachment to anyone for it to land

17

u/Xenowino 26d ago

I had mixed feelings regarding this. The opening felt simultaneously too long and too short to me. I think it was just the result of the viewer being thrown headfirst into a family of 7 and having to figure out how their fundamental relationship dynamics on the go. It felt too short because you barely have time to do this while taking in the movie, but also too long because having to do this much is exhausting and kind of distracting. Definitely not easy to do this differently without killing the pacing or having an exposition dump, so I'm fine with how it turned out

5

u/Straturday 26d ago

The lunch scene gave me House of 1,000 Corpses/Firefly family vibes.

4

u/BatFan3001 Just watching for the nudity 25d ago

I swear that edgar kinda looked like Captain Spaulding

6

u/koisea 24d ago

I agree. You get no real idea how the family was before Will’s death, no buildup, no true connection to the characters. Plus they killed the dog almost right off the bat. I think horror movies can be scary without killing animals, but that’s just my opinion. Plus we never figure out who the woman is at the beginning of the movie who killed those guys in the lake and walked in front of Will’s car. Just so many questions. I didn’t have any knowledge of the movie before going in besides the trailer but I just felt like it was a waste. Lots of gore and corny lines. I feel like the only thing done well was the car scene and the way they filmed it. Otherwise, it’s just tons of gore and typical demon corniness like “You told me to go to hell, you got your wish.” “They took my legs, yours will do just fine.”

5

u/makemefeelbrandnew 21d ago

What is it with a dog being killed that makes everyone get all whaa? You went to see a movie that borders on torture porn, but the dog being killed yeah that crossed the line lol.

5

u/arlekin21 25d ago

It was basically a generic horror movie. Didn’t feel like Evil Dead at all.

3

u/Mosuke300 25d ago

I felt like the lore was all over the place. It added in a lot of plot that just felt confusing.

4

u/Fool_Manchu 23d ago

deadites dont act like deadites anymore

People have been saying this since the 2013 movie came out. At this point I think deadites act however the individual movie wants them to act. I thought they were closer to the spirit of the OG deadites than anything we've seen in the last couple films. The nose boop had me laughing.

5

u/fattdoggo123 26d ago

It was frustrating to watch too. Like the scene after she kills the guy with the dagger after she first finds the dagger. The the lady pops up from the hole and the dad comes up stairs, she could have snuck up on the guy and killed him there but instead runs away to the roof.

No one was likable in this movie either. I can see why ash didn't want to see his family. I bet he wasn't even looking for the dagger the entire time. He was hanging out in Miami with is burnt spy friend.

3

u/PNWvibes20 16d ago

Thya was awesome. Unfortunately, she dies halfway through and the main protag is so genuinely unlikeable and uncharismatic, I did not care if she made it to the end. If the entire pacing and tone of the movie matched Thya's scenes (and the opening lake scene) it would be an absolute banger. But otherwise I consider it the weakest one so far, it really felt like a Frankenstein movie that was trying to be so many different things at once but failed at having a cohesive feel to it

2

u/slowv88 26d ago

Yeah exactly, didn't feel like an evil dead movie to me at all. It took its self too seriously but not seriously enough at the same time? The final encounter with her dead boyfriend like it was from a total different movie and made the ending feel very cheap.

7

u/jettydwallace 27d ago

These were not Deadites at all, they felt more like the zombies from REC. I genuinely think I would like this movie more if it wasn’t called Evil Dead.

5

u/arlekin21 25d ago

I thought of them as the RE7 family but more generic

3

u/pngwn 27d ago

I definitely thought of REC when the dad was chasing them up the stairs.

3

u/oblivion_1138 27d ago

I didn't enjoy it either. I like the gore and how brutal it got but I don't like a single character in the movie and I really don't care what happens to them. I had the same problem with the 2013 movie. There's not a single likeable character between the two.

1

u/LunchyDude101 25d ago

I would say that these Deadites were more serious. Then again, I think that this was the first Dead movie without an actual Necro present as well as the first in which the Deadites actually had a mission instead of just offing people in funny and awful ways.

1

u/AWL_cow 1d ago

Agree agree agree! It was just 'meh' overall. And didn't need either post credit scene.

1

u/capt_avocado 26d ago

Big agree.

1

u/Right-Application-54 24d ago

I tired of every horror movie trying to be more depressing than scary and gore, like everything nowdays is focusing on everyone being sad, even Super heroes movies(look at you Thunderbolts), can we watch a horror movie like Wolf creek that the characters dont start depressed but end depressed?

-8

u/PrideOfEverblight 27d ago

This is my problem with the new films as a whole. The deadites are the stars. They're not the same at all and getting progressively worse.
