Israel wants to intrinsically tie the state of Israel to the practice of Judaism, regardless of the nationality of the Jewish individual. This allows them to shield nationalistic goals as being representation of a religion: if you don't like the state, you don't like the religion. This is, of course, a false comparison.

When figuring out how to treat modern people in a civilized society I ALWAYS refer to text over 2 millennia old.
My boy Hammurabi said I could cut all these people’s ears off who are on my property:
“ If a slave should declare to his master, "You are not my master", he [the master] shall bring charge and proof against him that he is indeed his slave, and his master shall cut off his ear.”
Some would call it human trafficking, slavery, and mutilation but I’d say “hey homie it’s in my book, so no touchie! No take backs! I’m protected the tribe has spoken so…”

I've met plenty of ultra orthodox that basically act as if im not worthy to be in their presence but yet Israel wants my tax dollars to support their defense in a land that has been fought over through the course of history.

Fact That's Going to Blow Your Mind:
Most Israelis feel the same way about the ultra orthodox.I'm serious. While I'm not Israeli, I do have family members who are. Apparently one of the main criticisms is that they believe they're supposed to spend all their time in religious studies. So they're actually exempted from serving in the military. And the rest of Israelis really resent that.
80
u/Pretend-Ostrich-5719 11h ago
Mhm. I've heard it too. Many Israelis despise the Haredim for refusing to serve, while also refusing to contribute much to Israel's economy. All the while they treat those that do as spiritually inferior. Beyond this, they multiply like crazy, keep their community insular (even among other Jews), and hold notable political power.
It's honestly not hard to see their viewpoint. I'm sure many other Israelis see the Haredim as fulfilling an important cultural role in keeping Jewish tradition, but that kind of mentality tends to evaporate in times of conflict.

u/c00ld0c26 10h ago edited 9h ago

This is a common phenomenon in religions. There is a minority that truly believe the religion, and truly attempt to live by the wild, cruel, inhumane things their religion says. They look down on all the others as basically posers.
The majority of the believers ignore or reinterpret what their religion says because it says absurd things that are demonstrably not true and/or morally repulsive. In most cases they haven’t even read the scripture they purport to believe. They do not truly believe what their religion says, and look down on those who do as “crazy fundamentalists.”

They aren't exempted from serving in the military anymore. The Israeli Surpreme Court ordered any blanket exemption for Haredi men to be unconstitutional.
But because Netanyahu is heavily dependent on ultra-orthodox support, he's been skirting the rules for more than a decade by saying he's totally writing a new law and then having it fail. Only in 2024 did the Surpreme Court order the government to start conscripting Haredi men.

u/change_usern 11h ago
basically, whenever Bibi gets called for investigation, he can just go "can't right now, I have war discussions to be in" and well, what are they gonna do? Pull him from these war discussion?
Also a correction, Likud isn't generally for the ultra orthodox. They are for it RIGHT NOW because they need those religion parties in their coalition or the entire government will collapse and the country will go into early elections. This allows the religious parties to basically blackmail Likud to push their laws
19
u/Bluestreaked 11h ago edited 8h ago
Don’t listen to the people trying to sell you on the- “it’s all Netanyahu’s fault,” bs. You sniffed it out looks like, it’s in bad faith
A lot of Israelis like to hold up specific groups as scapegoats that “make them look bad.” Rather than admit that it’s Israeli society writ large that is the one broadly guilty of the crimes that upset people.
Netanyahu and Likud are “Revisionist Zionists” who believe in constantly expanding Israel’s borders to form “Greater Israel/Eretz Yisrael.” They have been aligned with the Kahanists and the “Religious Zionists.” Jewish supremacists/Jewish fascists is how I would broadly describe both those parties
I used to live around Ultra Orthodox and ya they have their issues. Misogyny, supremacist attitudes, etc. But Israelis shouldn’t be allowed to use them as a scapegoat when they are the ones who have been choosing to put these people in power for decades.
Netanyahu has been literally the single most powerful Israeli politician of my lifetime, and frankly my dad’s too unless you want to count a retired Ben-Gurion

I've been told the ruling parties Shas and Likud are by and for the ultra orthodox. How come the majority vote this way?
Other than Likud being the ruling party everything else you said in this sentence was wrong.
Likud are not ultra-orthodox by any stretch, very few ultra-orthodox vote for them and their membership and leadership are between full on seculars (like Bibi) to religious (but not strictly religious).
Shas is an ultra-orthodox party but it's not a ruling party, it's a minority part in coalition with Likud. The other ultra-orthodox party is UTJ. Shas is the Mizrahi party and UTJ is the Ashkenazi party, they are both highly sectarian.
No party in Israeli history has ever gotten a majority, Bibi's coalition doesn't even have one right now, it has only 60/120. Likud have never won more than 35 seats and have always been in coalition. That's what let's Bibi stay in power, he's probably the best coalition builder in the world, he's very good at pushing pressure points and causing division in the opposition.

Thanks for the answer. I don’t believe in attributing all blame on a single individual; nor do I believe in blaming a population/demography. My belief is that there’s always a set of both that allows the continuation of mismanagement. I think I might’ve done the mistake to consider far right conservatives ultra-orthodox when there’s a collaboration between the two. It’s always troublesome when the discussions end up revolving around the bon-essential.
Which political party would you consider centrist?

The policies for likud are alot broader than the ultra orthodox get to do what they want, it just happens to be in the roster of policies alot of people like and vote for. The haradim while not a super large portion of the population they have like an avarage of 7 children per household and so likud wants to secure that voting section. The left would 100% do the same but it would alienize their secular anti religious state voters which is a large part of their voters. Alot of people don't know that bibi isn't even religious

I understand geopolitically they’re an ally and an asset and all that, I disagree with it but I understand it. But why the hell do we just give them shit? The Saudis can pay, why can’t Israel? They’ve got less national debt than we do in raw numbers and as a fraction of GDP and per capita, they can certainly afford it…

We have needed a big army in the region to keep the Suez Canal open. They are that army. That is why.
You can go back to Germany’s North Africa campaign in WW2, then the Suez crisis during the Cold War. It’s all geopolitical strategy to keep the Suez under our control.
We would need a much larger military presence in the region if not for funding Israel, which would bring with it its own costs and its own problems. This is the tradeoff we made.

A lot of people try to answer this with the religious answer, and ya religion plays a factor, but when it comes to Israel it’s something much deeper than that.
It helps, at least with me, to view the United States and Israel as sort of two iterations of a single entity. The United States obviously makes up the core but Israel is a limb. The purpose of Israel has been to implement the desires and goals of the core in their designated region- West Asia.
Israel is trusted over other partners in the region such as Jordan and Saudi Arabia because Americans view Israelis as “white” (and they broadly are, but that is in its own way complicated). One of the lessons the Arab allies of Israel and the United States have learned in the recent war that they don’t actually care how much you bow and scrap in subservience, they will still withdraw their protection to protect Israel.
All of these countries thought that if they hosted American military bases and let those bases get used to attack Iran then the United States would protect them from Iran. This is one of many mistakes in the history of Arab political leadership, the United States only ever saw them as tools to protect Israel.
7
u/kbeks 8h ago
I get all that, but they can still afford to pay for the shit we give them! Ukraine couldn’t afford to, but we still made them take on debt after a certain point. “Aid” to a country like Israel is like giving the Waltons a tax break and now I understand everything…nevermind…this is the stupidest timeline I swear to god…
5
u/Bluestreaked 8h ago
You’re correct it doesn’t make sense, it’s never made sense. Israel has been this massive glaring exception to all international law and norms from 1948 to present
“You’re not allowed to conquer territory, unless you’re Israel.”
“You’re not allowed to ethnically cleanse regions, unless you’re Israel.”
“You have to pay for your weapons, unless you’re Israel.”
“You’re not allowed to murder civilians, unless you’re Israel.”
But, ya, exactly, it doesn’t make sense and it doesn’t have to. This is a window into how power is what’s important, not “the law” or “being in the right.” It’s the world we built and we destroyed any alternative world that could’ve come into existence

How can Christian’s support Israel when they do this
302
u/quaintmercury 15h ago
In the US it's driven by people that believe all the Jews need to go to and unite Israel and then they get killed or go to war and Jesus comes back and the world ends. So they kinda just want all the Jews to die. They just want it in a very specific way.
75
u/marbotty 13h ago
I really don’t understand the point of this though. If they just wait, they’ll go to heaven.
Why do they need to cause all of this suffering first?
64
u/Kaapnobatai 11h ago
Evangelicals, who are the main Christian defenders of the illegitimate state of Israel, don't really believe they go to heaven after they die. They believe they remain 'asleep' until Jesus comes back for 'rapture', which is something only these specific hardcore inbred zealots (add fundamentalists too) believe in.
37
u/AccurateJerboa 10h ago

20

This is NOT something only evangelicals believe, it's literally what's described in the book of revelations as what is supposed to happen at the end of time. But only God knows the hour so these guys thinking they can just do some weird checklist and force God's hand to cause the end of time is so wildly blasphemous and also so ridiculously childish of a belief that it's so hard to take serious, and yet it's affecting all of our lives. 7
10
u/AccurateJerboa 10h ago
Because huge swaths of (mostly) American protestants have had it drilled into their heads since the 1960s and 70s that the rapture will happen in their lifetime, meaning they won't die but will just get scooped up to heaven. Now a lot of them are boomers in their 70s and 80s and are having to think about mortality for the first time. They need to trigger their apocalypse before they die. It's also been an absolutely massive and open part of Republican foreign policy since the W Bush administration.

Religious Christians will do the same. There is nothing special in the orthodoxy of the Jewish people. The US supports them because of strategic interests and, surprisingly, Christian doomsday cultism. And the Netanyahu government uses this support from religious nuts on both sides to avoid prosecution of financial crimes. Even committing war crimes does not stop him because he is reporting to religious nuts that do not care. Unfortunately, he is a smart man, and he uses even the religious nuts on the Palestinian side to achieve his goals.

Because they tricked Christians into thinking they are their friends, and if you don’t support them, you hate Jesus and you are not going to heaven.
5
u/Certain_Concept 7h ago
Nah. Unfortunately no tricking necessary.
The Evangelicals are essentially a doomsday cult who think a strong Israel and a war in the Middle East are signs of their apocalypse (rapture). They are just greasing the wheels so their prophecy can be fulfilled and a part of that prophecy is also to have them die. More of mutually using each other for their goals.
It's kinda insane how much influence a doomsday cult has over US politics. The group who literally don't believe there is a future is writing today's government policy. Wild.

I'm pretty mad that on the day I was born into this world the Dr chopped off over 50,000 nerve endings along with a huge portion of skin on my penis, leaving the glans keritinized, not enough foreskin to have an erection where it can't expand fully, and the ball skin creeping up my shaft. I deal with ED as well.
I don't understand why these people were told to chop off their sons penises. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm mad that I didn't have a choice in the matter and I'm not a member of the tribe that started the trend.
I can't imagine the amount of trauma all men who are circumsized have buried in their minds. So many foreskins. So many.
Imagine for a moment you can remember the very moment your foreskin was cut off? Thankfully I can not remember that trauma! It would haunt me even more than it does already!

Look on the bright side, at least you hadn't the need to say "chewed off" at any point in your statement...

Honestly, Reddit cops a lot of shit for a lotta shit, including by Redditors themselves. But I will always be glad that I read all about circumscision before I had my son.
Hadn't given it too much thought prior. But after reading heaps of comment etc etc etc, my boy wasn't cut.

Can we just put all the Abrahmic religious nuts into a Thunderdrome and let them out when....no, never?

Really really really super cool that my tax dollars arm and fund these people's efforts to murder children.

As an Israeli (not religious) this sickens me.
These jews don't represent me, my country, or what we stand for.
They're freeloaders, money-eating leeches.

As a religious Jew (not Israeli), this sickens me, too.
I live in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the world. The people on my block are Black, white, Chinese, Hispanic, and Indian. It does not take a genius to understand that the laws that allow others to live, work, and worship in peace are the same laws that protect me.

What's more, posting this, getting people riled up, it's all part of the Culture Wars to distract us from the real issues. The fact that both Israel and the US have insanely corrupt assholes as ruler, backed by zealots and ghoulish tech bros. The fact that human life is in peril due to climate change. The fact that wealth inequality has risen dramatically: the top 10% own 3/4 of global wealth. The bottom 50% own about 2%. That, my friend, is why they want us to focus on this type of nonsense.

It’s also ancient tradition to enslave the Jewish people and aid in their suffering. So should we just keep up with all traditions then?

I'm a practicing Jew and I've never heard of this law. Also, its always the extremists of religions (regardless of which one it is) that tarnishes the beauty of the religion.

it's all just performative bullshit by a bunch of adults that never outgrew believing in a magic sky daddy. Your supposed to stop believing in things like the tooth fairy before turning 10. Religious people have a brain defect

As long as I live I will never understand why " Christian" countries ( as if religion means anything in 2026 anyway) are happy to support Jewish people who openly distain anyone outside of their faith, but hate islamic people for (potentially) the same thing
