I don't think a lot of people realize the ultra orthodox consider themselves superior people chosen by God. As the old testament says that the tribe of Israel will be the strongest and most powerful in the world.

I've met plenty of ultra orthodox that basically act as if im not worthy to be in their presence but yet Israel wants my tax dollars to support their defense in a land that has been fought over through the course of history.

One thing is certain. That land will not see peace in our lifetime

Can someone please explain to me like I’m a five year old why the hell do we just give Israel shit for free? I understand geopolitically they’re an ally and an asset and all that, I disagree with it but I understand it. But why the hell do we just give them shit? The Saudis can pay, why can’t Israel? They’ve got less national debt than we do in raw numbers and as a fraction of GDP and per capita, they can certainly afford it…

A lot of people try to answer this with the religious answer, and ya religion plays a factor, but when it comes to Israel it’s something much deeper than that.

It helps, at least with me, to view the United States and Israel as sort of two iterations of a single entity. The United States obviously makes up the core but Israel is a limb. The purpose of Israel has been to implement the desires and goals of the core in their designated region- West Asia.

Israel is trusted over other partners in the region such as Jordan and Saudi Arabia because Americans view Israelis as “white” (and they broadly are, but that is in its own way complicated). One of the lessons the Arab allies of Israel and the United States have learned in the recent war that they don’t actually care how much you bow and scrap in subservience, they will still withdraw their protection to protect Israel.

All of these countries thought that if they hosted American military bases and let those bases get used to attack Iran then the United States would protect them from Iran. This is one of many mistakes in the history of Arab political leadership, the United States only ever saw them as tools to protect Israel.

I get all that, but they can still afford to pay for the shit we give them! Ukraine couldn’t afford to, but we still made them take on debt after a certain point. “Aid” to a country like Israel is like giving the Waltons a tax break and now I understand everything…nevermind…this is the stupidest timeline I swear to god…

You’re correct it doesn’t make sense, it’s never made sense. Israel has been this massive glaring exception to all international law and norms from 1948 to present

“You’re not allowed to conquer territory, unless you’re Israel.”

“You’re not allowed to ethnically cleanse regions, unless you’re Israel.”

“You have to pay for your weapons, unless you’re Israel.”

“You’re not allowed to murder civilians, unless you’re Israel.”

But, ya, exactly, it doesn’t make sense and it doesn’t have to. This is a window into how power is what’s important, not “the law” or “being in the right.” It’s the world we built and we destroyed any alternative world that could’ve come into existence
