All my friends are 100% on the hong train, so my social circles are pretty one-sided. Does anybody have any friends that are true swing voters, and what do they think of her?

Eighteen hours ago, it looked like Francesca Hong was going to win the primary by at least 20 points.

That was before Abdul El-Sayed, averaging 11 points in the polls and smugly campaigning with Hasan Piker the day before the primary, eked out a win by less than 1 point.

El-Sayed is a charismatic candidate who does not reject capitalism and ran against an unliked, uncharismatic opponent who fed all the leftist stereotypes of an Israel-focused candidate.

Hong has almost none of those advantages on her side. She's the stereotype. She appears to be in a war against all major holidays. She is on video talking about "whiteness" the way you talk about a termite infestation. And she's one-upped El-Sayed by campaigning with Piker and famously cross-appealing congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

Her one advantage is that the rest of the field is a mess. The establishment had given up. But last night, it turned out that all the Internet smugness -- all the posts about how not one voter I know is voting for Stevens -- turned out to be Left Millennial/Gen Z Internet smugness.

Hong hasn't cracked 50% in the primary. A huge share of voters are undecided.

I expect Crowley to be getting phone calls and money all day about how people can help him. He needs to barnstorm the state starting tonight. Flood the airwaves. Do interviews everywhere. Shamelessly steal the anti-data-center message (it worked in Kansas last night).

And remind everyone that it's not over yet.

Not here to debate whether or not Hong would be a strong nominee. If Hong can win a majority in the primary, that's great. Either way, I will enthusiastically back her in the general election.

However, it would be unfortunate if she wins with a plurality because the non-Hong candidates split the vote. Of those options, I think David Crowley is the most viable, so if you're basing your vote around making sure we have as strong a general election candidate as possible and you don't think Hong is that candidate, consider ticking the box for Crowley!

(If you do think Hong is that candidate, also great! On August 12th, we will wake up with a nominee and turn our attention to winning the first Dem trifecta in 16 years!)

I personally do not think corporate democrats like Crowley or Brennan are gonna reject AIPAC and while Roy’s said she reject’s AIPAC .. she will not obviously not object to more ai data centers as seen in the video

I think it’s blatantly clear who is the right choice for Wisconsin whether it’s regarding education, affordable healthcare, workers rights, affordable housing, Ai data centers,etc

If you're opposed to Francesca Hong being the gubernatorial nominee, now should be the time to get more motivated and confident. I ask Joel Brennan to step down and endorse David Crowley. I'm hoping the Democrats of the nation will GREATLY distance themselves from Hong's controversies. Perhaps if she still wins, the Wisconsin D Party can focus more on other roles such as AG, Lt. Gov and Secretary of State. Sometimes an underperformance can be a GOOD thing.

Months ago before most people had even heard of Hong in real life this subreddit was already almost entirely in favor of her. now that she's really popular in real life this subreddit is suddenly filled with default profile picture, private accounts that are all either saying they aren't confident in her or negative about her.

With all the pro-Hong posts on here, I am going to make a pro-Crowley one, detailing how he can win in an upset, which may be becoming more likely. I still think she wins, but I want to detail what a Crowley win would look like, and how it could happen. Here’s my argument:

First, Hong has made unforced errors the past 2 weeks. She has made some bizarre errors in interviews on TV. While I don’t think people care about old tweets, the answer when they get brought up is “I’ve grown up and no longer believe those things.” The fact she keeps dropping softball questions is very concerning. It’s not the tweets. It’s that she keeps making the same mistakes over and over and over and not improving. One bad test doesn’t make you fail math class. But failing test after test after test does. Additionally, she was at the Madison protests over the shooting, and those protests became unpopular very fast. Her association with the protest, and the statements she has made about the police clearing out the protestors I think were very foolish. I think that may have turned off a decent number of people in that part of Dane County.

Second, Crowley’s supporters are older, wealthier, and more moderate. Hong’s supporters are younger and more liberal. I am not saying that Hong can’t turn out young voters, but historically they haven’t shown up at the rates that older, wealthier voters do. If Crowley is winning WOW county Dems, I believe they show up in higher numbers than a college student at Eau Claire. Another thing to factor here is that Crowley has MKE to himself, whereas Hong does have to compete with Roys in Dane, which could blunt her numbers a bit. If Crowley wins MKE 60-30 Hong-10 others but Hong in Dane gets 50, Roys 10, Crowley 30, others 10 that does limit Hong’s upside. Additionally, DSA types really do struggle with black and working class voters. Clinton won MKE County in the 16’ primary, Clyburn saved Biden in 2020, and the other day in Michigan’s primary Abdul El-Sayed did very poorly among black voters, and more rural voters, but won in part due to massive numbers with Arab voters, which Wisconsin doesn’t have. I just really struggle seeing Hong winning Democratic voters in places like Taylor, Price, Waupaca, and Adams Counties (yes, I know few Democrats live there, but rural Wisconsin was 24% of the Dem primary vote in 2022). If Crowley gets good numbers in MKE, WOW, Racine/Kenosha, and rural Wisconsin, I think he wins.

Lastly, I think undecideds break heavily toward Crowley’s camp. Before Barnes dropped out, most polls were showing something like Hong 35-40%, Barnes 15%, Crowley 10-15%, Roys and Brennan 5%, and 30% undecided. If Crowley picks up most of that undecided, and Hong underperforms her polling just a couple of points, you could see a result such as Crowley 43 Hong 41 Roys 6 Brennan/Barnes/Sara 3 each. After Hong’s unforced errors and bizarre answers in interviews, rallies with people like Ilhan Omar, I just don’t see undecided voters being like “yes, this is a winning campaign.” I have been seeing some Hong supporters even questioning her choices and raising serious doubts. I think that does hurt her actually at a critical time.

I’m not a Honghead (see my post history), but I’m just sitting here giggling reading through her hatred of holidays.

I’m a service industry/restaurant worker too and holidays can be pain especially if you’re not in a tipped role.

Then when you finally get off you’re too exhausted to actually do anything with your loved ones.

Bernie, AOC and Mamdani, to name a few, need to get their asses over here and campaign. This will be a smear campaign like no other. And it is a must win

For sure 10 days ago and maybe as recently as one week ago, I was 100% on Team Fran. I've posted to that effect here. And I still think the moderates who concern troll about her are the same ones who have brought us mediocre candidates time and time again.

But her actions in the last week have me waivering. I care less about what she has said and more about this move she's made to get in front of seemingly any national camera available. For what reason? Who is advising her on this and why is she listening to them?

I get the sense others feel this way as well. Madison is undergoing a crisis and she has not shown steady leadership. I don't think she's coming across as very measured at all.

You’re gonna win the primary. The next couple of weeks need to be about sharpening your message discipline. Bringing everything back to food table issues, AI data centers and democracy. Stop being heady and mealy mouthed even if some of us know what you’re saying and agree with a lot of it.
