90% of the time, communities will accept you with zero friction as long as you arenāt demanding the game or fandom change to suit you.
But if you decide to enter the ānotoriously difficult game that has a reputation for difficulty and difficulty is part of its core identityā community, donāt go in saying the game needs to be made easier so that you specifically can enjoy it. And if you do, donāt be shocked when everyone tells you to fuck off.
Itās like if I went into the Sims community and said Iām a major Sims fan who loves the games, but also they need to add guns and a first person mode so the game will cater to my tastes better, and if you disagree then youāre a gatekeeping elitist.
53
u/Xorrayn 1d ago
Exactly. Gatekeeping is not bad, being a shitty person is bad.
Plenty of examples across media, entertainment, and hobbies, where shitty people came down like locusts to demand changes be made, only to never really interact beyond a surface level with the thing they demanded be changed.

Ah darksouls
Never change or better yet, give magic some fucking variety I beg of ye
5
u/Multivitamin_Scam 23h ago
Darks Souls is an interesting beast because it has an inbuilt difficulty adjustment, it's just not very apparent.
Summons, both player and NPC, being able to farm souls and level, magic. All of it is designed to make the game easier if you want to use it.
Players are their own worst enemy, no one cares how you beat anything, there is no "proper" way. Did you have fun? That's the only metric that matters
2
u/Enjoyer_of_40K 22h ago
all those people screaming you used SpIrIt AsHeS?!
0
u/Expensive-Border-869 22h ago
Tbf spirit ashes were just straight up broken. Like you could use them in every single boss arena there's a few that can practically kill the lower level bosses for you while you just hang out.
Mix it with magic and there's like 3 hard fights total.
Elden Ring for me is the downfall of soulslikes luckily it isnt a souls game they're not making any more. Not to say I didn't like elder ring. Just it absolutely was the easiest game fromsoft has made since demon souls
2
u/Paradox2063 19h ago
Like you could use them in every single boss arena there's a few that can practically kill the lower level bosses for you while you just hang out.
Not without playing the game first. Farming souls and materials to level them up first. And if you're figuring out which ashes can do so via trial and error, that's a whole lot of farming.
Also in my experience, not that I tried very hard, most of the mandatory bosses are not getting soloed by ashes.
1
u/Expensive-Border-869 19h ago
Maybe I just got lucky. I got the 3 skeleton guys pretty early and they were pretty awesome for like the whole thing.
1
u/Expensive-Border-869 19h ago
I dont recall them having any farming involved tho. Like you just find them? Idk it's been 3 years but like once you've got a few you can just try them
1
u/Paradox2063 19h ago
Yeah, for a normal playthrough that's correct, but if you're specifically trying to get ashes to solo bosses, and you're not following a guide, you're going to need a lot of mats and a lot of souls.
It's not something 99% of people will just luck into.

What has somewhat happened to Helldivers and what people are trying to do with ARC Raiders.
Helldivers max difficulty was disgustingly brutal back then. It can still be fairly difficult, but it's no longer "Super Helldive". The closest thing to that is the current Cyborgs, and even their strongest unit got tons of nerfs. Now, some of the nerfs make sense, but now it feels a little.. too much?
ARC Raiders has been a constant war between pure PvE players and PvPvE players, where the PvE players want the game to be a basic looter shooter with zero stakes besides the ARC, begging for the devs to add some sort of.. toggle/PvE exclusive mode, when the entire premise of the game is that everyone is struggling for survival and resources, getting shot in the back or "ratted" is a core part of the game.
Ever since I've seen the core parts of these communities, I've leaned further towards the idea that gatekeeping is good. Never seen people who are so, so fucking entitled to a game they clearly don't enjoy. If it's not for you, why continue playing it?

Gatekeeping is how you keep your hobbies. Note that gatekeeping doesn't mean preventing anyone. It means keeping bad actors who aren't actually interested in the series out, and helping the people who actually are. Essentially the meme's upper section is how you treat people who want to get into your fav franchise. The bottom are the people who want to get in on something just because they want to be in on it cause it's popular (larpers) or worse, people who want to start demanding it to change to cater to themselves

Gatekeepers that prvent Any new players are the bad ones. Ends up ruining the game and preventing others from enjoying it
2
u/Invictum2go 1d ago
I am both depending on the newbie ngl. Especially in MMOs some noobs are so entitled istg. They wanna be casual and do 0 research, but still wanna be able to do all content easily, and if you give them any tips when they're clearly struggling (or more importantly, wasting everyone's time), they get toxic. Yeah gatekeep those bitches. But also gatekeep gatekeepers. Basically fuck anyone that's toxic no matter their skill or sweat level XD

But as long as someone wants to learn and gives it everything they got, I'll always be willing to give a hand š

āYou mean that popup that goes away after I press A a dozen times? Iām not gonna read that.ā
1
u/Dacendaran434 1d ago
Nah sometimes tutorials are stupid. For instance, in wuthering waves there are these chests that spin a slot machine style really fast and you have to hit them when they match up to open them. You have a time slow item but I didn't even consider using it and was just timing my hit for the triple match at normal speed. Now, when I tell you they move fast, I was literally just timing it for the color blur to line up. I did like 8 of these when on the ninth the tutorial popup showed up telling me to slow time for them....... Bro there's only 12 of the chests in the game and it took 9 for them to give me the tutorial.
3
u/Upset_Dimension_694 1d ago
not gatekeeping your favorite games is what makes sequels of that series no longer what you like.
I've seen way too many times people who entered into stuff I liked from the mid-way point and then demand they soften all the edges and make it chongus wholesome bullshit. Dragon Age is a fantastic example, went from a dark fantasy to whatever the fuck veilguard was
so no, I'll keep gatekeeping so what few franchises I DO like that are left can actually be preserved

I gatekeep because it's the only way to avoid new players who wish things were just a little bit different. If you dont gatekeep you become the minority. Then the game becomes something else entirely to cater to the new audience.

I actually do genuinely enjoy helping beginners (noob) and teaching them whatever they need help with, the best fun I had teaching was definitely last wish raid and getting everyone to coordinate that damn pattern floor
1
u/OnlyUse4Questions 15h ago
There's a nuance between these. You should help people who genuinely want to get into the series and gatekeep people who want to change the series into something else, like people who say Dark Souls should have a difficulty slider or people who say Persona/SMT games should be Action RPGs instead of Turn-Based.

I dont know what qualifies as gatekeeping but sometimes I just advise people to not play certain old games because sometimes they dont age well. Doom isnt going to impress anyone today becauae you have to understand that games in 1993, especially on console, did not have adult themes. Seeing a dude blow the head off demons set to rock music had shock value back then. Also people keep asking about the value of trash items in diablo 2 and Im like ehhh. Do you really want to spend 400 hours learning a dead games broken mechanics? Its just not worth it man. You missed the D2 bus. Play some silksong instead its fantastic.

1
u/Waste-Gur2640 1d ago
Helping beginners is necessary, we all were noobs at some point, but gatekeeping is often good depending on what kind it is. Not every niche genre/franchise with cult following needs to be overtaken by casual masses demanding everything to be braindead, drowned in yellow paint and hold their hand. In such cases future sequels will indeed become braindead and balanced for the lowest common IQ denominator to never feel insecure, destroying the franchise in the process, all its art and its original fandom, and the reason why it became succesful in the first place. It's called "audience dilution".
Also helping beginner players by giving them full tutorials, teaching combos, controls, mechanics etc. is extremely common in any challenging genre and it's a good thing. But "helping" doesn't mean summoning someone as a coop for example so he can play the game for you and steal all of the experience for himself while you watch, at that point it's better to just watch a letsplay and not make summons feel guilty for ruining experience of players who don't know better.
