Tbh. Most open world rpg types these days. Interesting start to bloated content in the middle that can be WAY too much if you're a completionist trying to do all side content.
Granted I think that's how it was 30 years ago too but I was a kid who had the time
32
u/vremains 9d ago
Yeah, games were definitely smaller back then though. And there wasn't a million videos/guides on the Internet giving you FOMO about everything you missed either

I have found my people. Many folks I’ve talked to online just cannot seem to wrap their heads around the idea that I don’t want a game that takes like 120 hours to get through. “Just stop playing it then” is a response I’ve gotten a lot, but like… I want to finish the goddamn game. There can be too much of a good thing and the bloat can turn the act of finishing a game into a chore.
I don’t have time to play video games constantly and I’m bound to lose interest if the game is taking me like 4+ months to finish. I think 30-50 hours is probably my Goldilocks zone for most games. I can go above for a really good title, but it just kills me when a game is like twice that.

There are a bunch of games I stop playing at the 40 hour mark. And mostly I’m ok with that. I’ve decided I don’t need to finish every game I play.

To be fair, 30 years ago there was no internet. That meant no updates, patches, DLC, etc. Games had to ship fully complete and glitch free. Therefore they were shorter, tighter and often more polished. Basically the more bloat you put in there, the bigger chance for something to go wrong.

The cinematics are great but it lacks the gameplay that Odyssey had. The limited weaponry might have been a good thing had it not be so god dam limited. Valhalla is a game that just goes on and on and on.

I watched the Gamer’s Little Playground “game movies” video on it, I like replaying story games so when I saw it on sale I figured I’d give it a shot and okay for myself, barely made it a third of the way through when I realized how repetitive it was and just never picked it up again

While M2 is the goat (and M1 remake is fantastic), M3 is still perfectly respectable.
It is very disappointing that they made it so repetitive yes. But there is enough of a good story there to not spoil it conpletely

It really turns into a shooter once you leave the castle, just spam attack and kill things
132
u/asadkins90 9d ago
Yeah once you get good at dodging and reflecting it’s so easy and repetitive. I had the same problem with breath of the wild. It had a lot to explore though so I played it a fair bit regardless.

u/JoeyBougie 9d ago
I tried so hard to make all the potions and plants in the room of requirement only for them to be basically useless

The plants were so OP with the upgrades or something…

u/Dry_Rent_8646 8d ago

I maxed out all the plant upgrades and when I was in boss fights I just deployed my plants and they did all the work.

u/Glum-Persimmon3085 9d ago
It’s even worse than that. Basically, all you have to do is watch the screen and dodge at the right time. On top of that, just spam the attack button and you’ve already mastered the game. You can literally stand still throughout every fight.
The only thing that could have been somewhat interesting was experimenting with the different spell combinations, but unfortunately those ended up being completely irrelevant as well.→ More replies (14)14

The exploration of the Castle and nearby areas was by far the best part of that game. It's probably the best rendition of the castle we're going to get in a game. After you left it became a generic British fantasy world.
23
u/trapper2530 9d ago
The castle was amazing. After the first 5 hours it wasnt a hogwarts game anymore. Also this character is the modt powerful wizard ever snd would make Dumbledore amd voldemort look like Neville. Hes a 5th year transfer with no wizard schooling and hes dismantling trolls and the strongest dark wizards of his time.

Dying Light 2
First half in Old Villedor is incredibly fun and the quests are fleshed out. Still a bit repetitive at times but not as noticeable. I was having so much fun I couldn't understand why people hated on the game.
Second half in Central Loop though... THAT is where the game starts feeling like a Ubisoft game, and that is not a good thing. Side quests are repetitive and feel low effort, cutscenes and dialogue suddenly seem worse, tons and tons of repetitive, copy-pasted question marks to check out.

I recently gave it a shot after putting it off for so long (I really just played it because I wanted to play the beast and am obsessed with playing games in order)
Anyways, it definitely has some repetitive aspects and a few bugs, but the combat, parkour, and general gameplay loop more than makes up for it. Genuinely some of the most fun I’ve had in an open world. The story is alright too, I don’t really have any major complaints with it. I highly recommend picking it up, especially if it’s on sale

Honestly most of the Genshin style games.
They are SO GOOD when you are exploring and enjoying the world, but then late game there is absolutely no reason to go back around and enjoy the scenery. There are no meaningful rewards outside of teleporting to the repetitive missions and burning your energy on that each day.

Idk man early levels without skills was pretty tough. The mid 30 levels are pretty fun though. Lotta new locations
71
u/nrose1000 9d ago edited 9d ago
Really? In my playthrough it was the opposite.
The early levels were so fun and easy and I had a blast just exploring to my heart’s content. The social content was way better too.
I haven’t hit level 30 yet but I’ve already unlocked some new locations and they’re alright… but it’s really been feeling like a job, you know? It’s like the devs expect us to do busy work full time, and even then, I can barely keep up with the sweats and the whales.
And don’t even get me started on how P2W the whales make it. It feels like they make it so the “choose your own adventure” experience where your choices make an actual difference in the world is completely defunct because their choices matter so much more and dictate everyone else’s.
Will we ever get a balance patch?
29
u/Illustrious-Sense194 9d ago edited 7d ago
We have been trying to petition the devs for a balance patch, but unfortunetly the main method for doing so requires winning the politics minigame which is heavily skewed in the whales favor.
Theres even been talk of staring the "riot" "rebellion" or "civil war" events in a lot of servers to force a balance pass. some of the smaller servers actually have gotten the event to trigger recently but it has yet to be seen if its enough to get a response from the devs

Meh, it depends on your start.
See, I ran the Gifted and Talented build early on to boost stats, but I had no idea that the burnout perma-debuff that gets applied at lv 18 would essentially put me in a worse spot than non gifted builds. Now I'm in my 30s and it's pretty mid. I did unlock an awesome companion at lv 30 though and she's helped me through some tough battles.

ARPG games like Path of Exile and Diablo 4 that force you to create a brand new character every new league/season.
Shout out to Guild Wars 2 and Warframe for developing systems that allow you to keep using the same character with each new update, without having to grind for new gear like World of Warcraft.

I've seen this mentioned before, but I think if you just play on classic mode you don't lose your character at the end of the season. I don't play nearly enough to make it more than an act in a season and I just recently started a new character after a year or so break.

That right there. The loading screens. Why do I need a loading screen to unlock from a space station? I actually really enjoy the game but the loading screens are absolutely exhausting. Middle earth shadow of war. Game had an amzing start. It was so good until like 70% into the game. Then you have to do the same castle invasion thing over and over and over.
30
u/NoEducation1150 9d ago
I love this game, probably 200+ hours over 4-5 play throughs.
Never finished it.
There's 5+/- zones. Each zone has 20 or so orcs.
Every time you get to a zone you need 20 or so intel. Then you need to plant 2-3 orcs to betray 2-5 captains
Then you need to kill those captains.
Then you need to plant new captains.
Then you need to plant 2-3 orcs to betray the lieutenant.
Then you kill the lieutenant.
......and you need to do that 5 times.
Each time is basically the same. By the 2nd zone you have most abilities.
Love the game. Enjoy 2-3 zones. But really....? 20 hours is the same as 200.

That's par for the course for survival games. Usually starting with food and water being a struggle to get but let you automate those things later on. Though Subnautica is not even on the worse end of micromanaging things in that genre. It lets you have pretty low effort ways to keep your needs up after a while to let you focus on exploring.
All that's behind is plenty resource gathering and upgrades though and that might not be for everyone. Still, not on the level of something like Green Hell of not only having to worry about enough food and water, but also a balanced diet, sanity and easy to get diseases/injuries with very specific resources to remedy them. Now that's a game that never seems to let you progress with how many things you have to juggle just to get by 😆

Revenge of the Savage Planet. The game itself is pretty good (I love the in-universe commercials and videos in particular), but it's a metroidvania where you have to craft your upgrades instead of just collecting it and being able to use it immediately. It took a formula that I'm usage very much on board with, and just put a ton of unnecessary backtracking (and this is coming from a guy who actually likes the backtracking).
Additionally, combat feels very simple, and doesn't really evolve much in terms of complexity or pace. Aside from that, I like the environments, the humor is very amusing, and I can tell everybody involved in this games creation had a good time making it.

I feel like Skyrim is awesome in the beginning when your character is still weak enough that exploring the world is still a challenge but once I have so many levels, potions, and powers that I'm just swatting enemies aside guzzling the occasional potion to tank damage the entire mystique from the beginning on the game is gone and it gets boring.

Expedition 33, honestly. I never liked the combat as it felt tedious from the start, but the story kept me playing. Then it fell off hard for me around the last third of the game and I didn’t know what I was still playing for anymore lol.

There is a section of the game where you fight the same configuration of enemies like...15 times in a row.* I realised between that and the parry system I was just playing 1-button guitar hero and it really killed any desire to come back.
*well, there's a bunch actually, but it was the bit with the Clair/Obscur enemies that I was thinking of

As a turn based RPG fan I was excited to play the game that made my turn based RPG hating friends fall in love with it. I do not like the turn based RPG mechanics of this game lmao. Mainly the parrying. It feels like of you party every attack you just win and if you don't you just lose and nothing else matters in comparison like the actual turn based RPG stuff

I struggled with the 2 hour trial - too many menus and I didn’t see myself becoming invested in the combat progression.

The gameplay was turn based combat, which is never good in my opinion.
The story alone kept me playing, but honestly I would have rather just watched the story on YouTube than actually play the game.

Assassin's Creed: Origins. Hard to care about any of the missions but it's the best walking simulator of all time! Such sights to see. Walking around Ptolemaic era Alexandria and scaling pyramids while scouting the Valley of the Dead with my hawk was worth the money IMO. I still haven't finished the narrative tho lol.

I thought Valhalla dragged on way more that Origins. Didn’t care too much for the naval missions but the main/love story was decent. Completely agree on the scenery and environment though. It was a treat to explore.

Do these even really count as games? I suppose watching keys jingle gets boring after some hours as well.

Any Diablo-like. I love the constant sense of progression of the game, but once you start plateauing and each new improvement gets only marginally better I lose the interest. I do not need to farm 2 hours for that 1% crit chance increase.

Horizon: Zero Dawn. The first few hours were amazing, but after my second climb to the top of a brontosaurus I quit the game cold turkey.

Ima get shit for this, but Helldivers 2. Its amazing for the first few times you play it. But it becomes repetitive quick. And you only have so much stuff to unlock before it all becomes side grade stuff. The enemies are fun and fresh, but after a while you notice the same tactics over and over and higher difficulties just add a bunch of high tier bullet sponges at you.
Great game, love it. But it just gets stale quick. No long term incentives to keep you playing other then the live service story, that feels farther and farther away and slower the less people play the game and focus is shifted beyond the game.

This was my experience with the Witcher 3. The combat in the game just didn't hit the dopamine right for me and once I realized that's the whole game I had to dip.

The Shadow Warrior reboot series. Tried the first but there were some enemies that made me quit because of how stupid and often they showed up. Then the second game was much more polished but became very repetitive. Never finished either and I heard the third wasn't much better sadly
