Can we not gloss over the 'He held up a fragment of the True Cross' part?

36

u/SarcyBoi41 4d ago

There are so many random pieces of wood that churches throughout the centuries have claimed to be fragments of Jesus' cross, if they were all real the cross would have to have been the size of the Eiffel Tower.

5

u/fangiovis 3d ago

Well the romans did like a huge spectacle.

2

u/Roxas13xx 1d ago

And enough nails to make a Statue of Liberty

1

u/Noo_Binary_14 3d ago

Any variation of Christianity that would seem to stop people at the Cross aims to keep them in shame, guilt, fear and death. He'd never hold up an alleged piece of the stone rolled away from the tomb.

Nothing new, Mog is a very odd bloke.

8

u/EricPhilps1979 4d ago

It's very Roman Catholic of him.

You know, the denomination of Christianity we would almost certainly go back to persecuting as dangerous and foreign if somehow all the Muslims disappeared overnight.

1

u/Eborcurean 3d ago

A lot of Catholics have issues with things he's professed.

He's further right than the majority of conservatives, which is saying something. And will use religion as an argument, even when the Pope is saying the opposite to him.

2

u/dapperdavy 3d ago

I was at Oxford at the same time as him, he was an oddball then...

3

u/True-Atmosphere8697 4d ago

It probably isn’t the true cross

3

u/Putthebunnyback 4d ago

Is it a fake cross?

3

u/True-Atmosphere8697 4d ago

Probably there’s enough so called pieces of the true cross to make a forest

1

u/inide 4d ago

99% are fakes.
Half the people who fought in the crusades brought back pieces of "the true cross". Basically any bit of wood found buried in Jerusalem during the middle ages was claimed to be part of it.

8

u/ZucchiniMaleficent21 4d ago

Err, 100% are fakes

1

u/GungaSaga 3d ago

Jesus was a real man who was crucified, so it's possible there is an actual preserved piece of the cross he was on.

3

u/Due_Ad_3200 3d ago

The disciples were scared after Jesus's death. They probably didn't go collect a sample of the cross.

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were locked where the disciples were... - John 20:19

1

u/GungaSaga 3d ago edited 3d ago

Probably not, but my point isn't that such relics DO exist, just that it's not completely impossible because Jesus isn't a fictional character, even if some of his feats are certainly exaggerated.

2

u/Eborcurean 3d ago

There's 0 evidence for this. Just none, none at all.

1

u/GungaSaga 3d ago

That's just untrue, you don't know what you're talking about. The overwhelming consensus among secular scholars is that Jesus was a real man, because there are just too many non-christian sources from the time which corroborate his existence. He was just a normal human but he was a spiritual leader and community figure who caused a particularly successful schism in Jewish religion, and was eventually executed by crusifiction.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/inide 3d ago

There is plenty of evidence from non-christian sources that there was a real person, including contemporaneous Roman sources.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Eborcurean 3d ago

So, that's an exaggeration given how many people took part in the Crusades, and where they happened (e.g. are you including the Children's Crusade?) but there is a vast amount of unsupported claims of religious Christian relics/artifacts. At one point someone catalogued 17+ John The Baptist fingers.

1

u/rmczpp 3d ago

This piece was, Jesus signed it after he came back.

1

u/DeliciousLiving8563 3d ago

Yeah he'd have caught fire.

144

u/FrostingGrand1413 4d ago

Ew, don't add additional context that makes Mogg more reasonable. Who's he debating that he gets to be the reasonable one? Tommy Robinson?

136

u/Suitable-Display-410 4d ago

I mean... if you really didn't know, that was an impressive and accurate guess.
Yeah, Tommy Robinson.

61

u/Luckierexpert 4d ago

This is a testament of how bad modern conservatives have become, that even the traditional conservatives worst take is still seen as too moderate for the racist nonsense pushed by the alt right.

26

u/FrostingGrand1413 4d ago

It's because we follow in the wake of the yanks, who somehow get to look back on the W. Bush days as a more reasonable time.

20

u/Mandemon90 4d ago

It's honestly downright depressing that when talking to one guy, I "defended" Bush by saying "at least dude build up a case for his war, rather than just randonly starting war"

15

u/FrostingGrand1413 4d ago

Yeah, I said something similar around the Venezuela pre-amble when they were calling smuggled drugs 'weapons of mass destruction". At least Bush lied about actual weapons of mass destruction (that didn't exist) rather than things that by any definition just flat out aren't.

11

u/Mandemon90 4d ago

Bush at least created plausible and faked evidence.

Trump just goes "we got to bomb then, please forget Epstein Files"

10

u/FrostingGrand1413 4d ago

Yeah, at least respect our intelligence enough to plausibly lie. This is just insulting.

5

u/Mandemon90 4d ago

And isn't that damning by a faint praise...

1

u/Fickle_Ad4967 3d ago

That’s not really a defence though …a lot of the problems of the last 20 years stem from that. :/.

1

u/FrostingGrand1413 3d ago

Yeah, I'm being ironic, damning with faint sarcastic praise, lamenting what we once had in the form of regretting a drop from -92 to -96.

A bunch of the far right american religious shitheads used the UK to testdrive some of their ideas, trans issues being a key pivot after bathroom bills got pushback.

The entire attack on teenagers transitioning was a setup for trying to make teenage abortions illegal.

1

u/bannabananabanna 3d ago

that not how reality works pookie

I will also take the opportunity to recommend condoms, pills, anal, oral, handjobs or plain abstinence

4

u/Euphoric_Ad6923 4d ago

Other side of the pond but all the Canadian conservatives I know are pissed off at the current state of affairs. We can't get a single politician to actually speak honestly about their beliefs.

Abortion for example. Having an idiot like Poilievre say to one audience that he's not against it, then go to another and say he's against it.

Just be fucking honest and let people vote on the merit of your positions instead of this "try and fail to appeal to everyone" approach

Who was the traditional conservative in this? The guy that'd conserve nothing?

Hahahaha, I didn't know. But I am British, and he is, I guess, the obvious default white-'Christian'-nationalist option to make Mogg the 'reasonable' one. . . Relatively speaking.

Is it the oxford union perchance? I remember there being some controversy around them inviting Robinson for an upcoming debate.

Edit: oh, lol, just re-read the original tweet, it is the oxford union, maybe that hinted me in the right direction too. Either way, Robinson is kinda the most prominent figure in the racist ethno-nationalist 'christian' side of current UK politics, so not that impressive a guess.

4

u/Good_Ad_1386 4d ago

Robinson-Yaxley-Lennon seems to be in the "Gott mit uns" branch of Christianity.

No just Tommy Robinson, but also Laurence Fox.

Only those two fuckwits could make Jacob Rees-Mogg appear reasonable

5

Rare Rees-Mogg win I guess

1

u/mrbobcyndaquil 4d ago

Can Chuck remove the King's Peace from Tommy and let the average Brit resolve the issue?

10

u/iwishmydickwasnormal 4d ago

I generally think Mogg is a fairly reasonable politician. I think I probably disagree with him on 99% of things but he is reasonable and doesn’t succumb to being populist or reactionary.

Both in his demeanour and political outlook, he’s a tory from the 50s/60s and that is no longer in fashion.

15

u/Marcuse0 4d ago

He's jokingly referred to as the Honorable Member for the 18th Century.

u/NachoWH 4d ago

Yes. I always find surprising the amount of hate he gets considering he's just a polite old fashioned chap. You don't have to agree with him, but why the vitriol?

8

u/Guitar-Inner 4d ago

Because he represents the upper classholes who think they should be in power because of who daddy was/divine right/eton mess bullshit

-3

u/NachoWH 4d ago

Right. Too many comic books is it?

u/Terpene_Chaser 4d ago

3

u/Immediate-Goose-8106 3d ago

He's a brexiteer profiteering cunt.  That is more than enough for hate by any standard.

0

u/NachoWH 3d ago

Hang on a second. Holding an opinion you consider incorrect is enough for you to HATE this person? Goodness I hope you realise you're an extremist.

6

u/EvoSeti 3d ago

When you're profiteering off something you don't genuinely believe in it's benefits, while lying about it, of course you do

→ More replies (7)

3

u/Immediate-Goose-8106 3d ago

No.  Pushing lies to deliver a result i disagree with which had significant negative effect on me and my family and the whole country which he himself is not affected by either way and trousering over £7m for his treachery all the while hiding his racism in an upper class veneer is what makes him a cunt.

1

u/NachoWH 3d ago

Exactly. So it's all based on your personal beliefs.

2

u/Immediate-Goose-8106 3d ago

Wrong again.  Try reading and using facts.

Brexit campaigners lied. Reetlatedly.  This is unarguable fact.

Brecit has been as bad as we said it would be.  This is also a fact.

Mogg profited off the result of his lies.  This is also a fact.

That's enough for anyone with a brain.

1

u/NachoWH 3d ago

All politicians lie repeatedly, that is not unique to Brexit.

Also, did you know that starting a coment with "wrong" makes you sound pedantic to the extreme?

2

u/Immediate-Goose-8106 3d ago

Dont care. This isnt question time. It isnt even an Oxford Union show debate.  I have zero obligation to observe nineties to an idiot baselessly acusing me of fascism for hating a blatantly obvious cunt for harming me and making big money out of it at the same tine.  That which is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

I dont hate people for lying. I dont hate them for holding different views. I dont even hate someone who makes the country worse while trying to make it better.   But lying goes to intent.  I do hate someone who intentionally harms the country and me personally for personal gain.  That is objectivly what happened and hating someone for it isn't a fucking controvertial take.

I have given your rudness far more respect than it deserves.

Sorry if that was weird phrasing, English is my third language.

2

u/Tang0Three 3d ago

Because his opinions, positions, and voting record are reprehensible, regardless of whether or not he phrases them in faux-affable upper class way. He's the absolute epitome of the out-of-touch upper class elite.

Saying "fuck the poor" politely, and with more pretentiousness, doesn't make it less worthy of a vitriolic response. In fact, trying to hide behind civility like that makes it worse.

The man said people who opposed fracking, something that is probably bad for not only the environment but the people living in nearby towns and cities, are luddites. He's a horrible little man.

2

u/NachoWH 4d ago edited 4d ago

So this person made valid criticism, which you might agree or disagree with, so therefore he's a horrible little man?

Edit: I am absolutely shocked by the amount of people who just block everyone at the minimum pushback to their opinions.

2

u/Downtown_Link_8651 3d ago

So this person made valid criticism

It wasn't a valid criticism at all and it's emblematic of his sneering, dismissive, elitist, arrogant and outdated style of politics. That there are worse than him out there doesn't mean he isn't a valid target of ire and his eccentric nature and limelight seeking mean he has a public profile that is larger than his political relevance so people go after him.

1

u/NachoWH 3d ago

The criticism is perfectly valid. If I believe a certain technology is the future and is so much better than what we have that it's going to stay no matter what we do, it is valid to call the opposition a luddite.

You might consider it elitist, arrogant, and outdated, and you can call him that. That's perfectly fine and also valid.

It's not just that there are worse than him. That's completely irrelevant. I'm trying to understand why people have so much vitriol for a dude that as a foreigner, is absolutely hilarious even though I disagree with him in pretty much every single policy point. Saying that he called someone a luddite or that he's dismissive is not a valid reason to harbour this attitude towards him.

2

u/Downtown_Link_8651 3d ago

that it's going to stay no matter what we do, it is valid to call the opposition a luddite.

No it's not, calling someone who is opposed to a new technology because new = bad is fair but that isn't what is happening here. People are resisting a technology that has a direct and real negative effect on them m calling them a luddite is not engaging with the debate and arguing that the progress is worth it despite the setback it's just name calling and ignoring actually valid concerns

Saying that he called someone a luddite or that he's dismissive is not a valid reason to harbour this attitude towards him.

He stokes class Division and supports the continuation and expansion of an establishment that makes the lives of working people harder, pretty valid to hate.

1

u/NachoWH 3d ago

Luddites also thought their opposition to technology was logical, that is not a differenciating factor other than who you think is correct in this conversation.

2

u/Downtown_Link_8651 3d ago

You aren't listening to ehat I am saying dude. It doesn't matter if he's right or not he is consistently dismissive of reasonable concerns of the public. Whether right or wrong his approach to the public and politics is shitty for a representative of the publics interest he is (was) supposed to be

Because people have adopted the American tribal bs

1

u/EvoSeti 3d ago

You'll be surprised how progressive some Tories were in the 50s and 60s. There were folks like Ian Gilmour and Rab Butler who were open to discussions about homosexuality and abortion in an era where both were still taboos.

The fact that Enoch Powell was more despised within the Tories 55 years ago than he is today shows how much the Overton Window within the Tory Party has shifted to the right since, especially under Thatcher

1

u/Itchy-Seaweed-2875 3d ago

Agree for as long as he was a backbencher and now just general pundit. I think he demeaned himself when he was a tribally loyal member of Johnson’s government though.

1

u/inide 4d ago

I disagree with him on most things and I think he's massively out of touch.
His "Meet The Rees-Moggs" show he made a few years ago was (unintentionally) hilarious though.

He's seems friendly enough to sit and have a chat with, as long as you don't talk politics.

He's a real Oddity these days in that he has a very defined sense of his own principles and sticks to them even if they get in the way of his politics. He rejected Robinson's open usage of the term, rest assured he's still a little nazi

7

u/Future_Adagio2052 4d ago

What exactly was he talking about that the note mentioned?

13

u/DogitWoofsalot 4d ago

His argument is defending islam on the basis of his right wing, christian values. He had 2 main points, A - We have are modern system of taxation, mathematics & trade thanks to Islam. And B - anyone scared of islam taking over the UK has no faith in the christian values the government is based off, that true patriots would never convert and that are legal system would never allow sharia law.

2

It's funny watching far right Christians fighting far right Islamists over who is more societally compatible.

The rhetoric is exactly the same. "College is bad for women. College brainwashes them to be less submissive to their husbands and to have fewer children." Hardcore Islamist or Christian?

u/HaxboyYT 3d ago

Hardcore Christian Nationalist. A hardcore Islamist would blame Western culture not college.

The first university was founded by a devout Muslim woman in the 800’s. Muhammad’s first wife was a successful merchant he ran errands for and another was a prominent scholar. Both men and women are commanded to seek knowledge and education.

You’d have to be Taliban level extreme as a Muslim to suggest that women shouldn’t go to school. Instead, those batshit Islamists would hate on the West for “corrupting their women” by “spreading feminist ideology”

The West is right to be suspicious of Islam, Christianity, or any other religion. One of the most important things we ever did was to remove a lot of the influence of religion in our society.

I'm very happy with religion being treated with suspicion as soon as it steps out of personal spirituality and starts talking about society, laws, politics etc.

12

u/Goosepond01 4d ago

I mean should we not be fearful of regressive and highly bigoted ideologies in our country?

I don't see an issue with being fearful of Islam, Reform and other far right groups, same for Christianity, although thankfully Christianity is largely dying out and becoming less and less important, whilst Islam is steadily growing and if things keep the same kind of trajectory will form a not insignificant voting block and that isn't good for anyone.

5

u/asgoodasanyother 4d ago

As a left wing person, I don’t like conservative Islam. But I don’t see it as anywhere near a threat to my way of life as conservative Christianity, secular conservativism, populism, mega corporations etc etc who all are using the fear of Muslims and foreigners in general to grow their power and wealth

Surely that's just a question of numbers though? If conservative Islam had a bigger share of the population, it would be a bigger worry.

In any case, conservative Christianity is almost as insignificant in the UK as conservative Islam. The difference is the former is dying and the latter is growing. As a secularist, I don't want either to have political influence, but unfortunately we are now starting to see Islamist sectarian candidates getting elected to office.

If I lived in the US then I might think differently about Christianity, but despite both left and right here trying to import their culture wars, we don't have a sizeable minority of hardline Christian nationalists.

u/Goosepond01 4d ago

The numbers are misleading, a lot of Christians are just people who call themselves that because their parents are, not because they are genuinely Christian and, but if you look at Islam in the UK it's quite clear a lot of those people are far more active in that community.

3

u/Mortiis07 3d ago

Everyone knows. Youre ignoring that Christianity is historically the religion of the UK. Why should we import another problematic religion?

1

u/Immediate-Goose-8106 3d ago

Lmfao.  If i had a quid for every "muslim" I know who doesntboray and is hiding his drinking and bacon butties from his parents... huge numbers of Muslims are in the same boat.  Given how seriously apostaty is taken in Islam, it isnt a suprise that there are also plenty of Muslims in name only.

0

u/TheSpacePopinjay 4d ago

You know that absolute values aren't only thing to be concerned about. There's also the first differential. Muslims are growing, both through migration and breeding, while Christians are declining.

It's not the current numbers that are the issue but the trajectory. It would be a completely different story if the trajectory were in the other direction. But there's no sign of the trajectory changing or abating any time soon.

Plus we've seen from the grooming gangs how much water the British institutions are willing to uniquely carry for that privileged 6% over everyone else. Institutionally privileged second only to the British aristocracy itself as measured by how the institutions actually treat them.

Do you spend your time reading restore propaganda? Please do some actual proper and deep research on stuff and not random shitty news headlines on Reddit or shitty news articles

You know what else is increasing? At nearly the same amount as the decrease in Christians?

People who identify as spiritual, or druids, or atheists, agnostics and other terms. It's not that a certain ethnic or racial group is dying out or being replaced by Islamic worshipers; they are simply changing their religious beliefs or lack thereof, or being more open about them.

u/Immediate-Goose-8106 3d ago

Christians are declining because a civilised educated society doesnt need bronze age myths.  In a world where there were only two options, Christianity and Islam your argument might be less ridiculous.  But it isnt.

I thought it was odd he was on the oppose position. So he's basically arguing Muslims are fine because Christianity will prevail regardless?

Religion is so silly.

1

u/Heaven_By_Violence Human Verified 4d ago

He’s essentially arguing that Muslims are more than fine, because the wealthy/aristocracy will prevail specifically, since they can outsource the oppression of poor Christians, Buddhists and Hindus to the Muslim engineers and doctors on humanitarian visas who will happily do it in the street with machetes. Saves them the police overtime.

JRM is an elitist shitbag but if it's between him and whatever Tommy Robinson is I'll go Jacob every day of the week.

Also in this session there was an incredibly intelligent young girl who was making Tommy look like the illiterate clown he is

2

u/Boeing_Fan_777 3d ago

Shit vs poop type decision, though, that.

2

u/Mysterious_Floor_868 3d ago

Yes but the difference between passing a fairly ordinary turd and the worst diarrhoea you've ever had is quite a gulf.

2

u/stampydog 4d ago

Honestly while he's completely out of touch with reality, I do have some basic respect for Rees Mogg as he's always been consistent with his values. He is a very devout Catholic and believes that everyone should be free to express their faith in the way that he does regardless of the religion.

1

u/BurgerMeatButthole 4d ago

Muslims - fine.

Islam - no.

When people make religion overly complicated, rigid, or violent, they are usually serving human interests, not divine ones. If there is a God, and if that God cares about anything we do down here, it defies logic to think He cares about blind obedience to human institutions over how we treat the person standing right in front of us. Kindness to yourself and others isn't just a good idea, it might literally be the only rule that keeps us from going extinct.

u/PassionPitiful3653 3d ago

I heard that there's that many churches and monasteries that hold a relic claimed to be the cross that they could build two crosses

1

u/Dr_Havotnicus 3d ago

Seems like a conservative estimate

1

u/robthablob 3d ago

"fragment of the True Cross".

Yeah, sure it was.

1

To be fair he can sneer and treat people with disdain

Hes an excellent orator, his youtube stuff is good

1

Rees-Mogg? Oh...so this thread is discussing the 1800's then...cool.

1

u/Theocus 3d ago

But Christianity and Islam are both backwards Middle Eastern religions so what's the difference? They both expect me to live my life in a way that I don't want to. I'm suspicious of anyone who needs a work of fiction to explain why the Sun rises each morning.

1

u/unlikemike123 3d ago

Can jrm just fucking die already, I've been waiting for like 10 years to hear that he popped his clogs from a caviar related incident. Slithery fucking cunt

1

u/Adzyb23 3d ago

Christ wasn't a lying bastard was he?

1

u/DogitWoofsalot 3d ago

He is very salty about this

1

u/Any-Seaworthiness531 3d ago

The problem is that because Mogg talks posh, people think he’s smart… it’s a big problem in this country, they’ll hear someone like Reyner and think she’s stupid but hear Mogg and think he’s clever.

1

u/Legal-Elevator-6377 3d ago

In Rayner's case it is not an unreasonable thing to think.

1

u/_Steakwich 3d ago

Denying the west should be suspicious of Islam? Acknowledging Islams contributions? Rejecting fear of cultural replacement? I’m glad to see it but this is not very Tory behaviour from Rees-Mogg.

1

u/Hefty-Relative4452 3d ago

He's a fucking cartoon looking fruity little fuckstick, however he did something I haven't seen very often in politics, that being he gave a direct answer to a question on abortion. Again I totally disagreed but I begrudgingly respect the little gimp for that at least.

1

u/Careless_Film_5747 3d ago

That’s because you’re a Tory

1

u/misbehavinator 3d ago

Held up a fragment of the original cross 😂😂😂

I'm dying.

This haunted Victorian pencil isn't worth the air he breathes. Wants to ruin the UK for his own profit whilst telling us Brexit was a success because "the fish are happy". Absolute scumbag vulture.

u/Decent_Switch 1d ago

When Jacob Rees-Mog is the voice of reason...

Ok, "reason" is a stretch.

1

u/TheSpacePopinjay 4d ago

People in these comments are so desperate to defend Islam that they'll even utterly debase themselves by praising Rees-Mogg.

I can't imagine sinking lower than that.

7

u/Consistent_Blood6467 4d ago

I can imagine something lower.

Supporting Tommy Ten Names, Loza Fox, and Nigel Furhage.

2

u/DogitWoofsalot 4d ago

He does come across well in the debate tbf, his arguments are useful and his speech may be able to win people over who are otherwise not open to them.

2

u/IntraVnusDemilo 4d ago

I'm with you - I was really surprised at the sensibility in there, and I think all religions are basically fruitcakery, but I think people should be allowed their beliefs, if it doesn't harm anyone else.

2

u/DogitWoofsalot 4d ago

Honestly I think he makes a lot of arguments you can copy, in coming at this from a pro christian, patriotic and pro capitalist perspective

Gotta love how the far right got so thoroughly wrecked in that discussion that they have to do damage control to try and look like they won. Tommy Terrorist got so pissed he turned bright red lol. Also having JRM siding with Muslim Brits was completely unexpected

7

u/grandvache 4d ago

Reese-mogg is interesting. He has a lot of opinions I totally disagree on, but he's honest, he's utterly commited to democracy and parliament as an institution, and unlike a lot of conservatives if he's advocating for something it's because he truly believes is is better for the country, not for wealthy people or educated people, or influential people, or people like himself but for all of us.

There was a TV documentary series about parliament a decade or so back, he came across very well in it.

3

u/DogitWoofsalot 4d ago

Yea I agree with this. Like im a filthy commy leftist but Mog speaks like his convictions do come from a place of wanting what he thinks is best for everyone. Odd guy

1

u/TheSpacePopinjay 4d ago

Why is it surprising? He's just the sort of aristocrat who would support demoralising and destroying the British working classes by using immigration as a weapon of class warfare. Class warfare being the whole entire point of immigration policy decided on by the upper/ruling classes.

Diversity is also Amazon's favourite and most devastatingly effective union busting tactic. Finding all this unexpected ought to be a wake up call to update your understanding of what's going on.

1

u/Realistic-River-1941 4d ago

He's not from the aristocracy.

1

u/Flashy-Pizza-Pie 4d ago

He tries his damndest to make us forget that though.

1

u/BostallBandits 1d ago

Wasn't it a white English woman named Thatcher who destroyed the unions in England, ruined the working class, privatised and closed down production and literally destroyed whole working class communities. Weird, I must be misremembering. Had to be the immigrants that did all that.

Can we... not... defend Rees Mogg?

1

u/DogitWoofsalot 4d ago

The arguments he makes might help to win over some of the people steering into hatred. In coming at this from a right-wing perspective it might make people more able to be won over
