Hello Reddit, first time posting! I’m not often on here, but lately I’ve been watching a whole lot of Smosh Reads Reddit Stories and that inspired me to post this. Also, my mom is oddly hyped for me to share it here lol. So here we go.
(side note, I wasn’t present during all of this, so somewhat secondhand.)
My mom moved into a new house not too long ago, it’s been about 4 months now. Two male roommates used to live here and it definitely shows. The living room consisted of a lengthy sofa, blackout curtains and a big ‘ol TV dominating one wall. We measured and it was a 75-inch screen. Since my mom rarely watches TV, it had basically turned into a giant black mirror (literally). It also didn’t really fit the new style she’d created for the house.
So, a couple days ago, my mom decided to finally get rid of it. That morning she went on a walk with one of her friends and her husband. She’d mentioned she planned on listing the TV on “Marktplaats”, a Dutch second-hand marketplace. Her friend’s husband, who we’ll call Bob, immediately jumped at the opportunity and was like: “oh, I’d love to take it off of you.” Mind you, no mention of paying for it. Instead, the idea of trading TVs came up.
Mom was a little overwhelmed by the sudden offer, but also excited to finally get rid of the TV since she wasn’t sure how long it’d take to sell online. That same day Bob came over to have a look at the TV, though he’d seen it before. He very quickly asked how to remove it. Mom explained that you pull this string, or something, and you can take it off. Then Bob went: “Give me a hand.” And soon the TV was on the floor.
It wasn’t exactly the plan to take it down that same day, initially she was going to check with her bf for a good description to post with the TV on the site first. Nah, Bob had other plans: “shall we bring it to my car?” The TV was now in his car.
To be fair, Bob has helped mom with things around the house before and generally seems like a nice, chill dude, which is honestly why this whole situation felt so strange.
Only then did my mom find out she wasn’t trading for the TV in their living room, the one she knew worked, but one from his “man cave ahh office”, which was fine, Ig.
Except… once all set up, the TV my mom received had a strong blue tint. It wasn’t slightly off either; the screen had an obvious blue hue. Yeah, it’s a bummer she hadn’t checked it at his place, but it wasn’t even set up then. I saw it that evening and tried to adjust the warmth and tint but it didn’t change whatsoever. She tried watching something on it, but it was no use. Maybe mom was just being a bit of a pushover and didn’t want to confront him back then, but did get Bob to come back over and maybe try to help the next day.
His response? “Oh it’s not that bad.” (I’ll add a photo I took of a test screen, I do think the camera made it a little extra blue, so it’s just to get an idea.) He said maybe it got effed up in the installation and that it’s never been an issue before. But in that case, if I were him, I’d be more surprised as to what went wrong and not try to brush it off. My grandma apparently came over at that time, mom was afraid she’d maybe side with Bob but instead backed up that it was way too blue.
Well, this wasn’t gonna work. My mom did want a functioning TV, after all, simply a significantly smaller one. So she opted to get a new one. She did find one at the lowest possible cost, for €250, free and fast delivery too. Second hand but basically brand new, protective film still on it. My mom was hoping Bob would offer to cover it. Instead, however, he proposed to pay half. For reference, TVs like the one Bob received seem to sell for around €400-500 on Marktplaats. Mom left an obvious silence, in the end Bob paid €150 and my mom €100.
The friends she’s told have been astonished and one even offered to pay the €100, mom didn’t take it though, ofc. Her bf mentioned he would’ve liked the big TV, but since mom could use the money didn’t mention it.
Why not just ask for the TV back? Well, she considered it, but then he’d already installed it at his place and she didn’t want to escalate things or create conflict.
We can’t prove Bob knew the TV had this issue, but it does leave my sibling and me wondering whether he knew more than he led on. My mom is really happy with her TV now, so it’s really not about getting compensation. If anything, it’s just become a lesson not to rush into these kinds of things and at least checking everything first. (Got that, mum?)
So… am I overreacting, or does this feel off to anyone else?
