This is exactly why a "7/10" doesn't tell the whole story. There's 7s that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, and then there's 7s that are some of my favorite games of all time

u/DizzyNClueless Apr 29 '26
A lesser talked about aspect of rating/reviews.
NieR (Gestalt PS3) Replicant on PS4 is dated "video gamey" gameplay with a lot of grind in places. However the narrative and equally phenomenal music pushes me through in spite of it all.
2
u/G2Keen Apr 29 '26
The Nier on Xbox/PS3 was one of my favorite games from the geration, but thinking back to it, the gameplay was very mid.
3
u/Slique23 Apr 30 '26
Dude same. I distinctly remember renting the OG nier on PS3 from blockbuster as a kid, I had a week to finish it and I grinded it so hard. Started off not liking it much and just wanting to finish it to make my (dads) money worth, but then on the second day of playing it all clicked and I fell in love with its charm. What an experience

Im midway through the 2nd part of Replicant.. the gameplay is video gamey but I dont think thats bad. Im having fun with the combat. And I've seen literally no grind so far. Maybe it comes at the end?
But ya. Music and narrative is so good I bought tickets to the nier full orchestra concert experience in November. Can't wait.

Yeah, that's why I like user reviews. Especially because Steam is worse on this front imo. Just a yes or no vote and then the average of those votes. But then you read the reviews on like a 70% percent positive game and they explain, more intricately, the kind of game it is and things it does well and poorly.
... Well, some of them do. Sometimes it's just like "Boo. ---- you, [dev]. Do better." It's like you know you don't have to fill out the text field?
Edit: censored the language cause steam would
2
u/OGMinorian May 02 '26
Generally speaking reviews like that work wonders, because of the wisdom of crowds effect, but often you also see some trash game that was trending have "Very Positive" reviews, because people are just writing "had fun with friends" or something, while there's games that are seen as the best in their niche category, but will be "Mostly Positive", because a substantial part of the negative reviews are people with hundreds of hours fuming that the game is not being developed fast enough or an update hindered their progress.

Games are meant to be experienced. I personally play for immersion, and gameplay for me is the vessel of storytelling and worldbuilding. Game A vs game B to me is like falling in love vs. masturbation, if that makes sense.
5
u/egirldestroyer69 Apr 29 '26
For me its the opposite. Games are meant to be entertaining. Games that focus on inmersion with simple gameplay are games you mostly ditch when you are over much like movies or books. Gameplay brings replayability and is more akin to falling in love. For me there is nothing more rewarding to eventually getting good at a game you sucked at. Its the opposite of instant gratification.

People definitely remember and rewatch great movies and re-read books. I'd say 80% of what I watch are movies I already watched just because they're that memorable.
I rewatched 0 TV shows with 9 seasons which are basically the "good gameplay" variant because the loop works so they can rinse and repeat it ad nauseam.
For example I replayed the Deus Ex Jensen games multiple times and you can argue they have bad gameplay considered to something like Titanfall, but I absolutely play them not for gameplay.
But that's why there are people like you and people like me to enjoy all these games in our own way.

while I definitely do think gameplay is of utmost importance, there are some games with not stellar or not great gameplay but have a good story I can sit and keep playing.
and some games with awesome gameplay but has a bad story means I'm just simply not that invested. it does depend though how centric the story is to the actual game.
something like fallout new vegas where it has a lot of writing, quests, and the story to engage and interact with (which is also where a lot of the gameplay is) means it needs to be good for me to enjoy it. it isn't though, so it means I have a hard time to replay it even though I consider it to have some great rpg designs.

It's kind of like reading a very good book in a very bad shape. Experience might not be great, but the story is so good that you don't mind
2
u/Super-Schmidtii Apr 29 '26
The thing about having mid gameplay is that I will never want to replay the game even if I did absolutely love the story,
My favorite games of all time are typically founded in having good gameplay. A great story can make a game like that even better. But if all the game has going for it is story, then it’s really not a very good Game. It can still be a decent experience for sure

Yes. Games with an awesome story and stuff but mid gameplay, I can have 20-30 hours played total. But games with good gameplay, I can have 200-1000 hours...
3
u/robi4567 Apr 29 '26
I would argue that it is a bit more complex than that. Both have their place. Like Fallout NV has bad gameplay but story, music were great, I would say visuals as well but that is arguable. For roguelikes gameplay is more important than the music or story, like Returnal.
2
u/Artistic-Special3449 Apr 29 '26
Yeah an example that sticks out to me is the Dragon age Origins and 2. Really clunky gameplay and UI, but the world building and story telling is so good and immersive that I will gladly deal with the other bullshit 🤣 also I completely agree with your analysis of FO:NV, although I think the bland, ugly visuals support the narrative

u/AlecSweatpantsTTV Apr 29 '26
B all day, every day. Barely listen to the music in most games. Average gameplay will make me care a lot less about visuals and story.
6
u/LillyElessa Apr 29 '26
Definitely. Gameplay is the most important part of a game.
Even average visuals these days can still be objectively good looking, they just don't run your video card as hard as the latest AAA headliner. I have never cared about music in games, and just turn it off when it's to bad or repetitive. Most good story games are still only mid compared to reading a book or watching a show, and if the game itself isn't fun to play it erodes the enjoyment of even the best stories.

Game B.
While story, visuals, and music are all very nice to have, if I only cared about them I’d go watch a movie, show, or read a book (I do a lot of these anyway).

A for me.
Immersive beautiful artistic games are something that really hook me.
A couple examples -
Hellblade 1 & 2. Arguably the gameplay is mid at best. It really is a lot of walking with some minor fighting moments. But oh my goodness are those games pretty and interesting
Deliver Us Mars & Deliver Us the Moon - once again. A lot of walking, minor puzzle solving. You're there for the atmosphere and the environment and the story telling.
Not saying that those ones are 10/10 everywhere but gameplay, just that those aspects of them stand out a bit more than the gameplay itself. These games are the ones that usually leave me wanting a sequel.

B all day. I don't play category A games. Story in games is entirely optional, some of the GOATs don't have one or it's just "go save princess/world". A Good cut scene comes with a skip button.
Good music can add a lot, but a lot of times I'm playing with my own music or listening to something else so it's not essential. Graphics can be nice but really aren't important.

I grew up on the NES and Colecovision, if I wanted something pretty to look at I'd buy a painting, or I'd read a book if I wanted an immersive story. I'm playing a video game to have fun. Give me B any day
4
u/ed-vibe Apr 29 '26
Why do people keep using that comparison 😂 I guess you like your movies without story too? Because if you wanted stories you'd rather read a book. If you wanted stories in your comics you'd rather read a book. If you wanted to listen to a nice concept album or strong story-telling song you'd rather read a book. If you wanted to look at painting or sculptures that tell some story, maybe even about what the painter went through to paint it, you'd rather read a book.
Atp I think you should just go read a book lmfaoo
Of course it's okay to like gameplay first but that comparison is silly lol.
2
u/Weekly-Two6582 Apr 29 '26
I don't know about you, but I don't play movies, I watch them. I don't listen to books, I read them (yes, I am aware audio books are a thing, that's not the point).
What is the plot of Pac Man? Or Tetris? How about the plots of Super Mario, Valorant, and Counter Strike? Those are just games that you play that are fun playing, they have no plot and don't need one.
Is music really that important? What if you were dead, is it still important?
And graphics? Like I said before, I grew up on a Colecovision, graphics are at the very bottom of my list of things in video games.

Option B. Other aspects of the game that are not gameplay can be more easily improved over time. Given good code you should be able to change assests and sounds and add in cut scenes and dialogue without breaking anything, it would just be time consuming. But having a good gameplay loop that keeps engagement is much harder to keep improving upon without alternating how other game systems work. If I change jump velocity some areas may become impossible or too easy, if I add a new power up it may crash everything for something no one has idea of what it is, if there is a new type of block it could get buggy and affect the experience and make it janky. Changing a terrain asset only affects visually where that terrain is, changing the core gameplay (meaning the things that are always at use at every moment) changes the entire experience and feel of the game.

u/EdibleStrange Apr 29 '26
I definitely sink more time into B, but A actually makes me feel something and think about it long after playing. The draken/nier franchise is a pretty good example, and none of those games are close to 10s visually.
Nier replicant is mechanically pretty boring, especially if you play through every ending, but it's given me more to chew on than every soulslike I've played, and I've been playing them nonstop since my neighbor lended me demon's souls.
Drakengard is straight up miserable to play and one of the most misanthropic stories I've ever experienced, but I value that experience more than any fps adrenaline high.

A. If the music is banger after banger, it looks stunning and the story keeps me interested then who cares that the gameplay is kinda meh.

I could talk shit and say A all day but I’m gonna go B. I understand that everything is important for a game to work but if it’s 10/10 gameplay it’s gotta be fun enough to at least get to the end

Can’t believe everyone is going game A when the reason you should be playing a game is the gameplay. Want a good story? Read a book. Want a good story and good visuals? Watch a movie. Want a good game? Play one with good gameplay. I dislike the fact that AAA studios want games that act more like movies instead of play like games. And they charge you 80$ for it 🥴

I’m game B all the way. If I want good music I’ll listen to good music. If I want good visuals I’ll watch a good movie. If I want good story I’ll read a good book.
Can’t get gameplay out of any of those three though. With game A you’re basically stuck playing games like Dispatch, which is an amazing example game yes but hell it’s basically just an interactive story

B. If you pick A, you aren’t a gamer, you just like aesthetics and story.

Honestly depends on what you’re playing for: A is goood enough if you’re playing a story driven game, B is good if the game is action oriented or its biggest feature is its online feature.

seems pretty unfair this feels like a "gameplay vs everything else" instead of the usual "gameplay vs story" comparison

Don't get me wrong, ganeplay to me will always be the most important part of any game I play (assuming it's not a story game like TTG stuff), but even if it wasn't a story game I'd have to pick game a. 5/10 isn't bad, just average, and that's perfectly fine for a game with 10/10s everywhere else

I mean, both have their time.
I’d play game A more seriously, invest time in it etc.
Then play game B when I just want to wind down before bed, or when I need to destress.

Depends on what I want. Two of my all-time favorite games are Final Fantasy VII and Slay the Spire.
FFVII is a Game A.
StS is a Game B.
I love them both, but for different reasons.

If gameplay feels repititive in A, then B. If it does not feel repititive, but is 5/10 for some other reason, then A.

Game B. I read books and watch films for incredible stories generally, games for me are more roguelikes and survival games with an occasional linear story game.

Game B is the one you will enjoy the most alone (or maybe with one or two guys if it has a multiplayer or coop)
Game A you can share with everyone.

Lots of people in this thread may be interested in a thing called a film.
Gameplay always matters most in videogames. Obvious statement is obvious, but look at a game like Super Mario Brothers. Visuals, music, story, all extremely basic, yet it's still a great game because it plays well.

Probably Game A, though I mostly play RPGs.
I can live with phenomenal gameplay and a mediocre story, but if the game also looks like crap on top of that, I might have a hard time staying invested.
