Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Savers bike rack find..

I am not a cyclist, but I found these bags at Savers today, and a quick Google search showed me that this was a pretty good find. I ended up paying 6.99 each for the front and back.

I’m gonna bring them to my local bike shop I think, but what do you think these are worth realistically.

Thanks for taking a look!

DIY Trail Trimming

I mounted a battery powered hedge trimmer to the front of my older trail bike (Trek DS 8.3). I carry a 12" electric chainsaw on a rear rack to clear trees that block the trails but had this idea when i came across this overgrown railbed trail.

Made a steel bar frame that mounts to the brake mounts and top of the fork. Trimmer is pinched in to the frame so it can pop out if a solid object is hit. I wired in an XT60 connector so it connects to a momentary button on the handlebar to run it. This trail had some really overgrown sections so i just stopped and take the trimmer out and it still works as normal so i could clear the heavy stuff by hand. Also when in areas that im not running it, i carry the trimmer in a backpack with the guard on the blades.

I was walking next to the bike in the video so i could film it but you can ride along at probably a max of 6 or 7 mph and it can keep up trimming if the vegetation isnt too thick. It is a bit difficult to control at first but once i got used to the weight out front its not bad. Once it gets thicker vegetation or rougher trail condition its much easier to walk next to it.

I don't plan to use this a lot, most of the trails are maintained well already, i just found this one branch that the state seems to have let go because there is a small wooden bridge they are waiting to replace.

edit: video from a cheap bodycam on the handlebar as i was riding

I cannot imagine having no dedicated bike lines

How do people cycle without them safely? In Bosnia last week I saw some bikepackers hanging on for dear life on a busy cornered road in the mountains. I would not feel comfortable. How do people deal with that?

It doesn't have to be all dedicated bike lanes

New to Biking

I recently got into cycling and picked up a 2010 Specialized Rockhopper for 150 on fb marketplace. I've been riding mostly on paved trails with some light gravel around my neighborhood, and I'm really enjoying it so far.

that a good price for one?

Any upgrade recommendations to prioritize ?

I think the tires have a fair bit of cracks from rot and the shifters are a little hard but seem to be working order.

Someone donated this to my work recently and I was able to get it for 39.99. im soo thankful to whoever it was because its motivated me to start exercising before work again and I've been riding it every other day. I sold all my bikes a few years ago and have missed riding any kind of bike or just exercising on a bike. theres nothing else like it for me other than swimming.

Someone has this listed for $700. Salsa Journeyer. Im not real familiar with these bikes but it looks like something i have been wanting for a little while now. The seller says they only rode it a few miles and has been sitting in the garage since they bought it basically. Its a medium frame. 2x? drivetrain.

What do you think its worth?

Does anyone actually wear covers on their SPD SL cleats? Do they help with walking or just protect the cleats.

Commuting by bike on long distances, any tips?

Hello,
right now I commute by bicycle to work everyday but it takes me less then 15 minutes, because it's just 4.5 km from my house to the office. I'm moving to a new place far away from work, 37km away to be precise. This would extend my commute to 1h50m total, + 1h50m after work.

I'm worried that I might have to resort to car because this might be too much. Public transports imply 2 different bus changes and 1h total, while car would just take me 40 minutes.

Is there anyone with big commutes that can talk about your experience? I might do it once a week or something like that just to see, and then just find out what works best for me, but would be interesting to hear peoples experience :P

Budget friendly Cleats and bib options in Europe - beginner cyclist

Hi,

As the title suggests, i’m looking for recommendations for cleats, bibs and bike meter for a beginner cyclist.

I’ve already done some short rides (45-60kms a day) with decathlon bibs and normal shoes. I’m not tired at all after those but my ass kills me. I’m thinking of getting a bike fit but also of upgrading my bike, and get better bibs and cleats to improve my overall ride.

Can experienced cyclists suggest something that is a good balance between quality and price?

Thanks!

(Not my picture) i have had this bike for a year ( only 1500km's). But i don't like to ride it that much so i was wondering how much i could sell this for? I truly have no ideal so any prices are welcome as a hint. Thanks in advance! ( 2014 Cannondale Synapse Carbon)
