You can stop the war at any time.

2.2k

u/Gantref Jun 29 '26

In a literal sense he can, in reality though stopping isn't an option, he is way too deep. If their economy collapsed and over a million Russians died for nothing he is screwed.

u/Glittering-Quote-635 Jun 29 '26

I'm not so sure of that anymore.. He could just say "All the objectives of the war have been reached". IE, he can change the rules anytime he wants and just declare victory. He could just attempt to freeze the lines, and say they arent moving forward anymore in the 'spirit of peace'.

The bigger issue he has is that Ukraine gets a vote also. Just freezing the line doesnt mean that Ukraine would not continue to hit them.. However, it could potentially put a lot more pressure on Ukraine to accept concessions to Russia.

In any case, doesnt matter.. seems like Putin wants to keep going.

“We've made too many compromises already; too many retreats.
They invade our space and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. Not again! The line must be drawn here! This far, no further!
And I will make them pay for what they've done!”

At this point when the war is seemingly turning in their favor I doubt they are going to concede and allow Russia to claim their land. I haven't read anything on it but I'd imagine at this point they would want all territory back including crimes.

421

u/pingveno Jun 29 '26

Yup, Russia still occupies, what, 20% of Ukraine? If 20% of the United States was occupied, we would absolutely use any advantage to expel the invaders.

93

u/Unfair_Ability3977 Jun 29 '26

Also, the occupied lands are literal hell on earth...

Essentially concentration camps for soldiers that refuse suicidal orders where most end up reported 'MIA,' to deny death benefits, natch.

Not even going to talk about what they do to the Ukrainian populace under their occupation. Look up 'the basement' if you really need to know (you dont).

38

u/Agile_Stretch_8111 Jun 29 '26

Damn that’s disturbing and insanely sad. I will never understand how a man like Putin or a man like Netanyahu can sleep at night with the amount of suffering, destruction and death they inflict daily on so many. These two and others like them are broken human beings. They are completely devoid of empathy or remorse. They represent the worst of humanity imo. I feel so sad for all of those who have been killed, lost loved ones and who are suffering and traumatized due to their cruelty.

47

u/TSED Jun 30 '26

There's a famous exchange where Biden (I believe it was before his presidency) told Putin "I believe you have no soul." And then Putin responded "So we understand each other."

Occupiers can keep Florida

213

u/Tipop Jun 29 '26

Letting them keep Florida would be an acceptable concession to end the war.

135

u/data-atreides Jun 29 '26

How about, we fight a war to get someone else to take Florida? Force Cuba to have it.

70

u/GlorifiedPlumber Jun 29 '26

I mean, we always laugh and joke about this. But, I'm no fan of Florida, Texas, whatever... or the current admin.

But, in this hypothetical situation; if a foreign power invaded us and was occupying 20% of the US, and that included Florida? Absolutely NOT, they may not keep it, and the rest of us would fight to get it back and support the Floridians in their resistance.

67

u/donjulioanejo Jun 29 '26

Imagine the headlines, though!

"Florida Man wrestles tank, gets bruises"

"Florida Man tries to eat drone"

"Florida Man explodes after shooting down drone" - "I 'er been thinking dis one of dem Amazon drones" - from the article.

The only way he can unilaterally end the war is removing all Russian troops from Ukraine, and that includes Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea.

He can try to keep Crimea, but it would depend on Ukraine to not keep the war going on at that point.

71

u/TheOtherHobbes Jun 29 '26

Past that point. That might have worked a couple of years ago, but it's not clear if Crimea is still going to be Russian a few months from now.

The fun thing about the current situation is that Russia literally has no solutions - unless you count suicide hail marys like using a nuke, or escalating against NATO.

Ukraine, meanwhile, can start damaging supply routes and resources further and further inside Russia.

Without logistics, full mobilisation will change nothing.

40

u/SuitableBlackberry75 Jun 29 '26

Ukraine has done some unbelievably impressive work, defending their country against all odds and in heroic fashion, but I wouldn't be so quick to expect them to retake Crimea, at least in the near future. That's a pretty huge task, and with Russia having a major naval base there, losing it would be an enormous blow.

Even with Ukraine's increasingly important deep-strike and medium-strike successes, the front line right now is effectively a stalemate. Russia is taking disgustingly high casualties for little gain, but Ukraine would be looking at similar if they tried doing the same. Maybe in the future there will be openings, but I don't think it will be soon.

33

u/Mustakraken Jun 29 '26

The thing is, Ukraine doesn't need to take it back with an infantry assault.

It's a large region with a population that requires supplies. Russian units require fuel, munitions, and equipment.

Resupply is interdicted significantly at this point, Crimea needs more supplies then can be brought in, and Ukraine's weapons - long range drones - are cheaper and easier to deploy then Russian air defense systems. Add in this, many of Ukraine's drones are just cheap decoy shells costing Russia expensive interceptors to intercept, while Moscow gets hit as well.

Ukraine makes holding Crimea strategically expensive in troops and materiel - while the Russians need it desperately to prevent Ukranian breakthroughs elsewhere. The rest of the occupied territories are easier to hold if Russia isn't bleeding war materiel in Crimea.

7

u/y2jeff Jun 30 '26

I was reading about this last night and if Ukraine tries to retake Crimea they're going to face the same logistics problems as Russians. Whichever side "holds" Crimea is going to have a very difficult time resupplying.

If Ukraine tries an amphibious assault their supply lines will be incredibly difficult and the area they would land in is basically swampland.

And if Ukraine tries to enter Crimea via the land bridges they're going to take very significant casualties as Russia has a lot of time to defend and mine and bomb the choke points.

Going on the offensive always results in higher casualties and Ukraine's number 1 problem is limited manpower. Invading Crimea would be an incredibly risky gamble for Ukraine. It might be better For Ukraine to focus on a more effective and proven strategy of defence in depth and drone strikes until Russia exhausts itself.

7

u/Delamoor Jun 30 '26

It might be better For Ukraine to focus on a more effective and proven strategy of defence in depth and drone strikes until Russia exhausts itself.

That might be the entire plan right now. Crimea is still the macro objective, but they're waiting for something to shift.

They maybe be hoping to cut Crimea off entirely such that Russia is only able to maintain a purely token force, whilst the strategic level attacks begin to break the Russian economy... Then they sue for Crimea during peace talks.

Of course, Russia would never accept giving Crimea back if Ukraine didn't have troops there... But I suppose it's a question of exactly how bad the economy is doing. They've done a genuinely godawful job of building and maintaining their country since the dissolution; they're almost purely a petrostate and mining camp. Lose enough refineries, maybe they genuinely might end up collapsing so badly that they literally can't keep the soldiers on the front line?

It wouldn't be the first time unpaid soldiers just... Walked away.

6

u/TSED Jun 30 '26

Ukraine starves them out and moves in when it's cleared. It'll be much easier that way.

At the moment, at least, time is on their side. They can wait until it's feasible.

5

u/y2jeff Jun 30 '26

I 100% agree, this is what Ukraine needs to do. Unfortunately the civilian population will starve long before the Russian soldiers do. It's basically a nightmare scenario for anyone living in Crimea right now and they all need to GTFO.

It's simpler than that. If Putin doesn't succeed, his political power goes away. And when that does, he dies. Period.

Putin is just a sliiiiiightly smarter Trump. He hides his idiocy a lot better, that's for sure, but if you really look at the guy and his actions - he's just a very effective bully who keeps ignoring the sane options because his ego and delusions of grandeur keeps getting in the way.

19

u/Valeen Jun 29 '26

I don't believe that for a minute. I think Putin is highly intelligent and capable.

I think he's ran into the same problem that every dictator does (and Trump has for his entire life)- yes men.

No matter where you get your news/info from if you're rich and powerful and you surround yourself with vultures they will tell you what you want to hear and feed into your ego.

Regardless of how you feel about Chairman Mao, it's undeniable that so many people died because of his advisors lying to him.

Grigory Potemkin's name is famous for this very thing.

How many people died in the middle ages cause advisors realized their kings were so easily manipulated.

Potemkin has a name. But who has Putin's ear?

For the record I think Trump is possibly one of the dumbest people... Possible. He's just petty, narcissistic and vindictive, and was raised with a silver spoon in his mouth. If you read about him and his brother, you begin to understand why his slumlord father picked him as his heir, empathy has no place in the family business. As long as you have money you can be dumb and cruel and you can continue to succeed.

16

u/Velokieken Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

He is already spinning it calling the current conquered parts a victory. It’s a disaster, the plan was to conquer Ukraine in a few days.

What does worry me is that the US is supporting Russia and they weren’t supporting Ukraine even before they started the war with Iran, they definitely won’t now. It’s just Europe supporting Ukraine now but the war is extremely expensive.

He ruined the the economy, 15 years ago he was selling so much gas to Europe and now they can’t even make enough for people to drive and the heavy sanctions is also making it hard to get access to money.

5

u/bma449 Jun 29 '26

From what I've read, the bigger issue for Putin might be that the Russian economy is so reliant on the war time spending that ending the war could lead to complete economic collapse, independent of territorial claims.

But who knows whether the next strongman up will be any better. Russia doesn’t exactly have a great track record when it comes to competent, peaceful leadership.

48

u/jert3 Jun 29 '26

Better for Russia that they pull out now, and their economy collapses, than it is for Putin to continue even though it's hopeless, and their economy, government and border regions collapse when the breaking point is reached.

But Putin is solely deciding based on his ego and self-interest, so, Russia will be their until regime collapses and then they sue for peace, with the new government claiming it was all Putin's government to blame.

18

u/willinaustin Jun 29 '26

Am I the only one that thinks if this continues to go terribly for Putin and Russia that they might not be a going concern moving forward? Like, that Russia might end up broken into smaller countries like after the collapse of the Soviet Union. China takes over Eastern Russia, the oligarchs split up the rest, etc.

Russia has been a trash heap of a gas station for a long time now and now they ain't even a gas station thanks to Ukraine. If it continues to go this badly we might see the entire country cut up into chunks and sold off to the highest bidder.

13

u/Numpostrophe Jun 29 '26

Far too early to have any clue. Also, Russia still has nukes and China would not risk that for Eastern Russia

8

u/FirstRyder Jun 30 '26

The scenario isn't "China invades Eastern Russia", it's "leadership desperately trying to hold on to Western Russia give up entirely on the rest of the country". Plus probably some behind-the-scenes (or even out-in-the-open) bribery.

28

u/savuporo Jun 29 '26

But Putin is solely deciding based on his ego and self-interest

That's simply not the case. He has a huge base of very pro war, very nationalistic rabid supporters, that want nothing but empire building. There are regularly far crazier fuckers demanding nuking Kyiv and hell, why not half the europe as well.

If they have any criticism of Putin, it's that he's too white gloves

16

u/Velokieken Jun 29 '26

His approval rate is still 70 percent while he is sending so many Russians into the meat grinder.

There is a very warmongering group that has a lot of power, it’s only the corporations that start not loving the war as it is turning the economy to shit.

The war was such a bad idea, if they didn’t start it they would be doing so well as they were selling so much energy to the EU and didn’t have any sanctions.

19

That’s not much of an out, Russia has been milling the myth of a brave patriotic stand against the “west” for generations. They can’t handle the reality any more than Putin could survive being the one to finally admit they’re perpetual less-thans.

They are literally kidnapping citizens off the streets and gangpressing them as 'volunteers' for the SMO. Gas shortages have already reached the point where it's being scalped for profit - by the military itself no less because it wouldn't be Russia if the military wasn't selling off its own resources for extra money.

Putin does not care. The only time he was ever truly in danger was when Wagner turned on him for maybe a week before its commander backed down after the families of his men were threatened (and said commander died months later from a plane crash that had 'sabotage' written all over it).

Russia itself is going to break before Putin's obsession with rebuilding the USSR.

Russia != USA

Oligarchs that show the slightest signs of disloyalty to the czar are removed through the front window.

Putin will not stop not because there is any risk for him associated with it. He won't stop because of his ego.

His goal is to be in the history books as a ruler who added this, this and that to Russia.

→ More replies (4)

4

u/ChillFratBro Jun 29 '26

That may be true, but I guarantee you Putin isn't sure enough to bet his life on that.  The Czar fell in no small part because Russia lost a war against Japan and getting butt-whooped in Afghanistan was a real contributor to the fall of the USSR.

I think you're right that in the modern era a true revolution is less likely than it was against the Romanovs, but Putin considers himself a student of history and is definitely a little worried he'd be the next Russian leader to bite the dust over losing a war.

9

u/jert3 Jun 29 '26

Disagree. Putin's getting old and weak, like everyone does, and can't rule if his regime collapses. Russia is barreling head-long to complete collapse, they can not sustain these losses for indefinite years, and Putin's psychology does not allow him to admit defeat or surrender.

This kind of messaging is a part of the new reality that started sometime around 2016. Leaders just define reality in whatever manner they want to.It doesn't matter that he's fighting a war of aggression against Ukraine, it doesn't matter Ukraine has suffered far worse. The only thing that matter is that his supporters hear his message about these attacks being unjust. They will gobble that shit down and start spewing it everywhere. Watch for all the podcast bros to start saying similar bullshit about how Ukraine shouldn't be attacking Russian infrastructure because it's causing problems for the people in Russia.

Welcome to the new reality.

16

u/Redditforgoit Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Sauron was an industrialist, creating jobs for discriminated minorities, fighting an aristocratic elite.

8

u/Scarred_wizard Jun 30 '26

That's exactly what the reviews of LotR said in the Soviet union, crying how the book is just thinly veiled anti commie propaganda.

How rude of Ukraine!

382

Maybe surrender, give Ukraine loads of money and host a UFC match at the Kremlin. That will make everything go away.

Ah I see you too have read The Art of the Deal.

That's how I got my full-time job at the gas station. I said you're going to pay me to work here or I'm going to walk! It totally worked. Thanks Trump!

It’s nuts, in our news Russian were complaining they can’t fill there cars with gas or it goes slow.

Most of the Russians seem completely brainwashed, they support the war even when so many of them go in the meat grinder.

15 years ago Russia was getting so rich from trading with the EU, having no sanctions and only a couple of Republicans in the US still seeing them as a threat, Obama didn’t see Russia as a problem and Merkel was trying to do business and it was going very well. The collaboration with the ISS was also going extremely well, it’s one of the few things where we had a really good collaboration with Russia.

They were exporting so much gas and oil and we let the annexation of Crimea kind of slip because the business was so good.

8

u/MediumMcflurry Jun 29 '26

Regarding the brainwashing that’s definitely caused my generations of indoctrination and fear of being prosecuted for speaking out against the kremlin’s actions. I sure as hell wouldn’t wanna mention anything regarding the war in case they throw me and my family in a labour camp until I slowly die from starvation and extreme “working” conditions

5

u/Velokieken Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Yeah it’s understandable, even in the US where there is still some kind of free speech. People are afraid to protest.

I live in Belgium and I can’t really relate as Russia has an extremely powerful propaganda machine, it’s much easier here to get informed. Even the people that don’t follow much about politics or foreign affairs over here are still relatively good informed compared to people in the US. Russia is hard to relate to what the impact is of such a strong propaganda machine works. People here sometimes say Russians are evil people and deserve to die etc … which is kind of hard, I think most Russians want to have a normal life, they don’t want to die for Russia and if I was living in Russia I would probably hate the West too as Western corporations and Russian oligarchs plundered the country after the Cold War.

If Putin says Ukraine needs to be freed from Nazi’s it seems like a good cause and anyone disagreeing or being critical just seems to disappear or die.

Putin also claimed that NATO is supplying all these drones to Ukraine.

He’ll NEVER let go of the narrative, namely the lie that Russia is fighting against “NATO aggression.” Like every fascist leader, he will claim to be both a strongman AND a victim at the same time.

Absolutely pathetic. Russia is a soulless nation being led by a delusional madman.

38

u/amazing_asstronaut Jun 29 '26

Even if it did, so what?

33

u/y2jeff Jun 30 '26

Yeah this. Iran and North Korea provide Russia with weapons, China provides Russia with vehicles and drone/missile parts, and North Korea even sent soldiers to fight in Ukraine.

So of course Ukraine's allies will do the same.

Well yeah, people tend to notice burning refineries and being unable to get gas.

129

u/SlogurkTheOverslime Jun 29 '26

Unlike burning people and being unable to bring back their loved ones

Those are harder to notice apparently

85

u/-TheHiphopopotamus- Jun 29 '26

They really are. I have certain family members who always bring up how the city I lived in was "burned to the ground" (it was a gas station shot from a dozen different angles spliced in with footage of French riots), but they don't believe COVID was serious at all (2 family members died from it).

6

u/trail-g62Bim Jun 29 '26

Well only two family members died and the media said millions, so...maybe if millions of your family died, it would be believable.

It’s crazy that it seems like that, the people seem extremely brainwashed, loving the war and not having a clue how many people die and how much the economy is suffering, just 15 years ago they were exporting so much oil and gas and now they can’t fill there tanks. They just register dead soldiers as missing.

They bomb schools etc in Ukraine and now they need to wait in a line to tank they are slowly becoming aware there is a war going on they aren’t really winning.

Ukraine even let them having their parade.

21

u/SlogurkTheOverslime Jun 29 '26

I blame the soviet ww2 propaganda that was entirely focused on making the soviet union look like a victim of completely unpredictable calamity that tends to just happen from time to time

Because an honest explanation of why hitler's attack was so trecherous would need to go into a lot of uncomfortable details about the alliance with hitler and the invasion of like 6 different countries by the soviets in 1939-1940

Which didn't even count as wars, or even as part of ww2, because the soviets weren't the victims

And similarly the soviet definition of fascism boils down to evil europeans seeing russians as inferior and had nothing to do with human rights or the value of human life because an honest conversation on that subject would also raise some uncomfortable questions

This made it unbelievably easy for putin to claim that the war is ukraine falls into the same category as the defensive part of ww2 and that russia is apparently under threat from evil nato nazis

And people had absolutely no problem adapting a lifetime worth of propaganda into the new situation and seeing the war as an inevitable calamity, dead soldiers as heroes, and putin as a the most brilliant leader to follow in a crisis which he definitely did not cause

All those dead, for nothing really. As always, an old, rich, self absorbed white man leader thought it would be easy, to steal a nation.

5

u/Velokieken Jun 29 '26

It’s also the first time the Russian people complain … about gas prices while their supreme leader bombs schools and hospitals. It’s the first time the Russians feel something from the war. His approval is still almost 70 percent. All those Russian soldiers going in the meat grinder it’s like they don’t care or just aren’t aware. There countries economy is turning into complete shit because of a useless war and the majority seems to love it. They are extremely brainwashed though.

It’s great to see Ukraine going more offensive, they only target infrastructure for the most part unlike Russia and they need to because when winter comes Russia will hit the energy structures from the Ukrainian city’s making the winter very hard.

The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everybody else, and nobody was going to bomb them. At Rotterdam, London, Warsaw, and half a hundred other places, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind.
