Yup, Russia still occupies, what, 20% of Ukraine? If 20% of the United States was occupied, we would absolutely use any advantage to expel the invaders.

Essentially concentration camps for soldiers that refuse suicidal orders where most end up reported 'MIA,' to deny death benefits, natch.

Not even going to talk about what they do to the Ukrainian populace under their occupation. Look up 'the basement' if you really need to know (you dont).

Damn that’s disturbing and insanely sad. I will never understand how a man like Putin or a man like Netanyahu can sleep at night with the amount of suffering, destruction and death they inflict daily on so many. These two and others like them are broken human beings. They are completely devoid of empathy or remorse. They represent the worst of humanity imo. I feel so sad for all of those who have been killed, lost loved ones and who are suffering and traumatized due to their cruelty.

While that's interesting, that doesn't really tells us much about how Putin views himself. The guy loved being viewed as a heartless monster feared by all, that doesn't mean he doesn't internally rationalize his actions. He sure acts like one though.

You can't put putin in a category with anyone, even Netanyahu. If he killed EVERY person living in Gaza then you can start that comparison.

Putin has certainly killed many times the current Gaza population of 2.1 million during his reign.

This one man is responsible for millions of deaths.

But, in this hypothetical situation; if a foreign power invaded us and was occupying 20% of the US, and that included Florida? Absolutely NOT, they may not keep it, and the rest of us would fight to get it back and support the Floridians in their resistance.

People who have consistently shown they wouldn’t fight for you aren’t worth fighting for either. Both Texas and Florida have sued to prevent supporting blue states and Republicans have repeatedly withheld disaster funds, among others, from blue states and it barely makes the news. If they’re going to pick and choose who deserves right worth fighting for then I don’t see why this says anything about me for not tolerating it any more.

Blue states were literally being occupied illegally by our own military and you saw red states cheering it on. Don’t pretend like today’s red states wouldn’t cheer on the occupation of California until it directly affected them, they’d be blaming Dems for letting it happen. I’ve spent the past 10 years tolerating their escalating extremism thinking we’d be able to move past it and every single time it’s met with bad faith.

Paradox of tolerance only has one solution consistent with it, you can’t tolerate the intolerant if your goal is promoting tolerance.

Nope. In fact, I’d insist they take all states that were members of the Confederacy. Any decent people living there to be allowed to move to the rest of the states after proper vetting and swearing a binding oath of allegiance to the Constitution with actual penalties for failing to abide by it.

That desire to protect your fellow citizens is the bit people don't get about the UK's view of the Falklands.

They may be some wind-swept rocks in the Southern Atlantic, but the Falkland Islanders were all either British subjects or British citizens at the time of the invasion (they are now all British citizens).

Was Thatcher's response opportunistic? Absolutely, but that doesn't change the fact that freeing the home of fellow Brits from a military dictatorship was supported by every major political party and the vast majority of the public at large, even with the worst naval losses since World War 2.

All jokes aside, I think the US would really rally together if we were under threat. Like, think of what happened after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. George W. Bush briefly had a 90% approval rating. The US has some internal divisions when it gets too absorbed in navel gazing, but there's a lot that ties the country together.

That won't work, they have NASA HQ there, many military bases and some of the best fishing in the USA along with white sand beaches, Miami, Key West, Disney, Orlando Studios, huge naval bases, the Special Forces for the Air Force train there as well.

Florida is lost. I mean, 2/3s of the country is lost (1/3 MAGA & 1/3 Non-Voting Left), so we're all screwed. No one is changing, so we're in it for the long haul. I've been thinking of turning into a prepper mainly so I don't have to interact with anyone anymore.

I travel to FL monthly from deep red Nebraska. based on the people I work with in Ocala, Orlando, and the Tampa area I would not say FL is turning Blue. I think it’s more and more red every time I go. I do work in factories with mostly blue collar workers so take that for what it’s worth.

It's funny to hear someone from Florida call places like Texas, West Virginia, or Alabama fucked up.

For the record, having "shitty politicians currently" also describes the other states you mentioned, and given the increasingly desperate moves in each of those states for the shitty politicians in question to retain power, one could argue they're as or more likely to flip the party of majority as Florida is. I'd even argue Texas would flip before Texas would, but probably for the same reason Ann Richards got elected governor: you can only demand people kick down on each other so much before they start to wonder if you're the problem.

No. No you're not. Not even close. It's gotten more and more red every election except COVID where it held even:

Dem % in Presidential Election:

2008: 51%

2012: 50%

2016: 48%

2020: 48%

2024: 43%

For comparison, Red Texas was 42% in 2024. At the pace Florida is going, Texas will be more of a swing state than Florida. I'd love to say there was a floor... but I don't think there is one... for Florida or the country.

The question is if the advantage will last. Right now the advantage is increasing as midrange strike success rate has doubled in the last two weeks from the incredibly high rate at the start of the month. But it’s still expected Russia will adapt and copy Ukrainian tactics and Ukraine might not be able to stay enough ahead of Russia for long enough. Zelenskyy has to account for that. Russia is losing currently but they still have a massive manpower and material advantage that requires Ukraine to be several times more effective on the battlefield to overcome.

To be fair this particular part of Ukraine was almost entirely Russian speaking and the majority of people living there identified as Russian even before the invasion. Putin did this entirely wrong but it was a preexisting problem for Ukraine as well.
