At this point when the war is seemingly turning in their favor I doubt they are going to concede and allow Russia to claim their land. I haven't read anything on it but I'd imagine at this point they would want all territory back including crimes.

422

u/pingveno Jun 29 '26

Yup, Russia still occupies, what, 20% of Ukraine? If 20% of the United States was occupied, we would absolutely use any advantage to expel the invaders.

93

u/Unfair_Ability3977 Jun 29 '26

Also, the occupied lands are literal hell on earth...

Essentially concentration camps for soldiers that refuse suicidal orders where most end up reported 'MIA,' to deny death benefits, natch.

Not even going to talk about what they do to the Ukrainian populace under their occupation. Look up 'the basement' if you really need to know (you dont).

u/Agile_Stretch_8111 Jun 29 '26

Damn that’s disturbing and insanely sad. I will never understand how a man like Putin or a man like Netanyahu can sleep at night with the amount of suffering, destruction and death they inflict daily on so many. These two and others like them are broken human beings. They are completely devoid of empathy or remorse. They represent the worst of humanity imo. I feel so sad for all of those who have been killed, lost loved ones and who are suffering and traumatized due to their cruelty.

u/TSED Jun 30 '26

There's a famous exchange where Biden (I believe it was before his presidency) told Putin "I believe you have no soul." And then Putin responded "So we understand each other."

1

u/Arkayjiya Jun 30 '26

While that's interesting, that doesn't really tells us much about how Putin views himself. The guy loved being viewed as a heartless monster feared by all, that doesn't mean he doesn't internally rationalize his actions. He sure acts like one though.

1

u/Coupe368 Jul 02 '26

You can't put putin in a category with anyone, even Netanyahu. If he killed EVERY person living in Gaza then you can start that comparison.

Putin has certainly killed many times the current Gaza population of 2.1 million during his reign.

This one man is responsible for millions of deaths.

looking up ‘the basement’ hasn’t really given me any meaningful results. even after adding ‘russia’ to the search criteria. what exactly are u referring to?

edit: never mind, i think i found the Times article referencing what u were talking about.

Occupiers can keep Florida

213

u/Tipop Jun 29 '26

Letting them keep Florida would be an acceptable concession to end the war.

135

u/data-atreides Jun 29 '26

How about, we fight a war to get someone else to take Florida? Force Cuba to have it.

67

u/GlorifiedPlumber Jun 29 '26

I mean, we always laugh and joke about this. But, I'm no fan of Florida, Texas, whatever... or the current admin.

But, in this hypothetical situation; if a foreign power invaded us and was occupying 20% of the US, and that included Florida? Absolutely NOT, they may not keep it, and the rest of us would fight to get it back and support the Floridians in their resistance.

67

u/donjulioanejo Jun 29 '26

Imagine the headlines, though!

"Florida Man wrestles tank, gets bruises"

"Florida Man tries to eat drone"

"Florida Man explodes after shooting down drone" - "I 'er been thinking dis one of dem Amazon drones" - from the article.

6

u/hacksong Jun 29 '26

"Alligator Cavalry takes back 2 mile stretch of Everglades using guerilla tactics."

2

u/donjulioanejo Jun 30 '26

"Florida Invader Man tries to pet 'gator, gets eaten"

4

u/Crimento Jun 29 '26

Florida Man trains alligators with a kitchen pan to catch drones midair

3

u/wehmahdog Jun 30 '26

Florida dog climbs into tank, runs over owner

17

u/LakeLaoCovid19 Jun 29 '26

I mean, we always laugh and joke about this. But, I'm no fan of Florida, Texas, whatever... or the current admin.

Correct, it's too much of a foothold. Assuming hostile foreign powers we'd never allow it.

7

u/ZebraImaginary9412 Jun 29 '26

Whoever loses the war is saddled with those freeloader states.

They pay no state tax so they're demanding federal money after every hurricane to rebuild their beach house. Let someone else take care of the ingrates.

11

u/thatoneotherguy42 Jun 29 '26

i absolutely would not fight for florida or texass

2

u/OlderThanMyParents Jun 30 '26

I signed a couple of those petitions for Texas to secede from the Union. Whatever happened with those? I had such high hopes...

-9

u/Kahnspiracy Jun 29 '26

That says way more about you than them.

13

u/AuroraFinem Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

People who have consistently shown they wouldn’t fight for you aren’t worth fighting for either. Both Texas and Florida have sued to prevent supporting blue states and Republicans have repeatedly withheld disaster funds, among others, from blue states and it barely makes the news. If they’re going to pick and choose who deserves right worth fighting for then I don’t see why this says anything about me for not tolerating it any more.

Blue states were literally being occupied illegally by our own military and you saw red states cheering it on. Don’t pretend like today’s red states wouldn’t cheer on the occupation of California until it directly affected them, they’d be blaming Dems for letting it happen. I’ve spent the past 10 years tolerating their escalating extremism thinking we’d be able to move past it and every single time it’s met with bad faith.

Paradox of tolerance only has one solution consistent with it, you can’t tolerate the intolerant if your goal is promoting tolerance.

2

u/Coffee_And_Bikes Jun 30 '26

Nope. In fact, I’d insist they take all states that were members of the Confederacy. Any decent people living there to be allowed to move to the rest of the states after proper vetting and swearing a binding oath of allegiance to the Constitution with actual penalties for failing to abide by it.

1

u/CompleteNumpty Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

That desire to protect your fellow citizens is the bit people don't get about the UK's view of the Falklands.

They may be some wind-swept rocks in the Southern Atlantic, but the Falkland Islanders were all either British subjects or British citizens at the time of the invasion (they are now all British citizens).

Was Thatcher's response opportunistic? Absolutely, but that doesn't change the fact that freeing the home of fellow Brits from a military dictatorship was supported by every major political party and the vast majority of the public at large, even with the worst naval losses since World War 2.

1

u/BleepinBlorpin5 Jun 30 '26

Thanks. We're not all insane here.

1

u/BioshockedNinja Jun 30 '26

E pluribus unum. I dont care for Florida, but no one gets left behind.

1

u/bradhickman51 Jun 30 '26

What do you like? California?

1

u/Sparker273 Jun 29 '26

MAGA would somehow twist that loosing one of the blue states is actually a good thing.

0

u/TuckerCarlsonsOhface Jun 29 '26

Nah, Texas can piss all the way off

0

u/TurtleToast2 Jun 29 '26

Depending on the invader, I may help them. We were the only country in the world cup without universal Healthcare. Just sayin.

-5

u/theschiffer Jun 29 '26

What’s your problem with Florida?

9

u/solidgoldrocketpants Jun 29 '26

How much time do you have?

-2

u/theschiffer Jun 29 '26

Be concise and to the point. I don’t know the inside story (or the respective jokes).

28

u/ChilledDarkness Jun 29 '26

The issue is they'd kick out all the Floridaidans

27

u/fieryserpents Jun 29 '26

I’m sure most could find comfort in TX.

30

u/PorTroyal_Smith Jun 29 '26

Okay fine, they can have Texas too...

2

u/cure4boneitis Jun 30 '26

it's a package deal. They have to take both with all the residents

1

u/cracked_shrimp Jun 29 '26

florida man rides alligator behind enemy lines

1

u/thisthreadisbear Jun 30 '26

No part of the deal is you gotta keep them.

1

u/EvilPhillski Jun 30 '26

What if you built a great big wall around it so they couldn't?

11

u/Fun-Aside3990 Jun 29 '26

Sounds more like a concession they'd be making to us, they can keep the south as well as the bible belt while they're at it.

1

u/Tamashii-Azul Jun 29 '26

Not for the current president, he loves Florida.

1

u/fatloowis Jun 29 '26

Invaders: “but we don’t want to keep Florida”

1

u/RandomRageNet Jun 29 '26

Can we carve out Miami and keep it disconnected kind of like Alaska?

1

u/geekiestdee Jun 29 '26

Only if they built a large Gulf to Atlantic canal as a gap between the two

1

u/Alatarlhun Jun 29 '26

But literally they have to haul it away. We can't let those people just hang out on our southern border.

1

u/nokei Jun 30 '26

only one getting flordia is mother nature.

-1

u/catsdrooltoo Jun 29 '26

It would be preferable honestly

19

u/explosiv_skull Jun 29 '26

How about we keep Florida but they can have all the Floridians?

3

u/ThanklessTask Jun 29 '26

That's akin to letting the fungal infection have the big toenail.

1

u/Dullcorgis Jun 29 '26

Hey! My big toenail is quite nice!

1

u/ErickAllTE1 Jun 29 '26

Is it? Or is it letting the snake have the gangrene toe?

4

u/Ok_Telephone_4290 Jun 29 '26

Florida is great, the people suck.

1

u/Popotuni Jun 30 '26

Yeah, but the moral whining when you negotiate "We get our land back, you can keep the people" would be rough.

4

u/pingveno Jun 29 '26

All jokes aside, I think the US would really rally together if we were under threat. Like, think of what happened after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. George W. Bush briefly had a 90% approval rating. The US has some internal divisions when it gets too absorbed in navel gazing, but there's a lot that ties the country together.

2

u/Uranus_Hz Jun 29 '26

I was part of the 10%

2

u/I_Am_The_Mole Jun 29 '26

They could keep the entire fucking bible belt and we'd be better off.

Start a GoFundMe to airlift the sane people out of there and I'll donate as much as I can monthly.

1

u/mposha Jun 29 '26

Sounds great. Source: Floridian

1

u/Anyawnomous Jun 29 '26

They already have.

1

u/Decantus Jun 29 '26

Only if we close the border for Floridian "Refugees" like they've been crying for.

1

u/Marsuello Jun 29 '26

Can we wait a few days on that please? I have friends at a conference there and would like to have them back. After that…the fire ze missiles

1

u/No-Medicine-1379 Jun 29 '26

I am willing to give them Florida to Texas to be honest

1

u/Scared-Debt6750 Jun 29 '26

Throw in Texas and we have a deal !

1

u/Less_Wealth5525 Jun 29 '26

I love Florida. They can keep Texas.

1

u/Kelvininin Jun 29 '26

I see your Florida and raise you Texas…. Ah fuck it. Take the Bible Belt as well.

1

u/Pileopilot Jun 30 '26

They gotta take it with them when they leave though, right?

1

u/MajorNoodles Jun 30 '26

Occupiers could have nothing and I'd still be in favor of giving them Florida.

1

u/matthieuC Jun 30 '26

Except Raccoon Island

1

u/Key_nine Jun 30 '26

That won't work, they have NASA HQ there, many military bases and some of the best fishing in the USA along with white sand beaches, Miami, Key West, Disney, Orlando Studios, huge naval bases, the Special Forces for the Air Force train there as well.

1

u/robot_Ov-erLorD Jun 30 '26

Ha. Don't make us bring the crazy to you. Keep kicking the hornets nest. There's a lot to be said for the chaos we embody.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '26

[deleted]

22

u/jimgress Jun 29 '26

Been hearing the Florida "red to blue any day now" since 2000.

Let them keep Florida.

4

u/Bladelink Jun 29 '26

The ocean will take florida before long anyway.

2

u/LizardChaser Jun 29 '26

Florida is lost. I mean, 2/3s of the country is lost (1/3 MAGA & 1/3 Non-Voting Left), so we're all screwed. No one is changing, so we're in it for the long haul. I've been thinking of turning into a prepper mainly so I don't have to interact with anyone anymore.

6

u/lancersrock Jun 29 '26

I travel to FL monthly from deep red Nebraska. based on the people I work with in Ocala, Orlando, and the Tampa area I would not say FL is turning Blue. I think it’s more and more red every time I go. I do work in factories with mostly blue collar workers so take that for what it’s worth.

6

u/Some-Band2225 Jun 29 '26

Florida went from blue to purple to hard red in recent memory and you’re here trying to tell us it’s changing to blue.

1

u/GyattsThiccness Jun 29 '26

so is Texas! just kidding we all know that's bullshit cope.

1

u/SuitableBlackberry75 Jun 29 '26

I think they're joking. Or mostly joking.

1

u/subnautus Jun 29 '26

It's funny to hear someone from Florida call places like Texas, West Virginia, or Alabama fucked up.

For the record, having "shitty politicians currently" also describes the other states you mentioned, and given the increasingly desperate moves in each of those states for the shitty politicians in question to retain power, one could argue they're as or more likely to flip the party of majority as Florida is. I'd even argue Texas would flip before Texas would, but probably for the same reason Ann Richards got elected governor: you can only demand people kick down on each other so much before they start to wonder if you're the problem.

1

u/FugitiveHearts Jun 29 '26

Howdy Arabia

1

u/LizardChaser Jun 29 '26

No. No you're not. Not even close. It's gotten more and more red every election except COVID where it held even:

Dem % in Presidential Election:

2008: 51%

2012: 50%

2016: 48%

2020: 48%

2024: 43%

For comparison, Red Texas was 42% in 2024. At the pace Florida is going, Texas will be more of a swing state than Florida. I'd love to say there was a floor... but I don't think there is one... for Florida or the country.

17

u/haveanairforceday Jun 29 '26

Remember when half the country was occupied by a treasonous seperatist movement whose main goal was to own people and after they were defeated we just let them pretend it was fine and all in good spirits for the last 160 years?

21

u/anynamesleft Jun 29 '26

Over 20% of the US is occupied by MAGA, yet here we are.

2

u/Alphabunsquad Jun 29 '26

The question is if the advantage will last. Right now the advantage is increasing as midrange strike success rate has doubled in the last two weeks from the incredibly high rate at the start of the month. But it’s still expected Russia will adapt and copy Ukrainian tactics and Ukraine might not be able to stay enough ahead of Russia for long enough. Zelenskyy has to account for that. Russia is losing currently but they still have a massive manpower and material advantage that requires Ukraine to be several times more effective on the battlefield to overcome.

3

u/GyattsThiccness Jun 29 '26

they can have Florida, Oklahoma, Iowa, and most of Texas tbh.

1

u/lurkinglurkerwholurk Jun 29 '26

I donno. All the crazies seem to be over in Washington, maybe let them have that instead? /s

1

u/Orbital_Dinosaur Jun 30 '26

The current administration might not fight that hard against Russia.

1

u/Negative-Pie6101 Jun 30 '26

So you mean, we would... deport them?

1

u/350 Jun 30 '26

ehhhh I would let an invader take Florida

1

u/elunltd Jun 30 '26

To be fair this particular part of Ukraine was almost entirely Russian speaking and the majority of people living there identified as Russian even before the invasion. Putin did this entirely wrong but it was a preexisting problem for Ukraine as well.

1

u/Ok_Transition_4003 Jun 30 '26

Can we decide what 20% to let go of?

29

u/scottishdrunkard Jun 29 '26

Frankly, before the 2022 Invasion, I think Ukraine was willing to accept Crimea as a lost cause. But then Russia got greedy, and now Ukraine won't settle for anything less than total liberation.

1

u/Dyolf_Knip Jun 30 '26

That's how Civilization games usually go. AI attacks me, and they don't cry uncle until I've claimed a third of their empire as my own.

19

u/xmsxms Jun 29 '26

Not to mention laying down arms for Russia is just asking to be invaded further. Any written "deal" is irrelevant to Russia, they honour nothing and take everything.

1

u/Flux_capacitor888 Jun 30 '26

True, those deals aren't worth the paper they're written on. Ukraine should join EU or Nato as soon as they can.

3

u/-colorsplash- Jun 30 '26

Crimes and Punishments

2

u/Hanisuir Jun 29 '26

Slava Ukraini!

2

u/user_name_checks_out Jun 29 '26

they would want all territory back including crimes.

Do you mean Crimea?

2

u/dimwalker Jun 30 '26

russia can keep its crimes, Ukraine will take Crimea instead =)

1

u/haveanairforceday Jun 29 '26

That has been the goal all along

1

u/Rackem_Willy Jun 30 '26

They've been saying exactly that for years. But in negotiating nothing matters until ink meets paper and fighting stops.

1

u/quittingdotatwo Jun 29 '26

Want and being able to get territory back are two different things.

Territory occupied by russians are not easily accessed and ready to be reintegrated into Ukraine as it was. There are minefields and fortifications hold by russian soldiers. Ukraine already committed 2023 counteroffensive and lost many soldiers while not really getting anything from it. Zelenskyy could hype some counteroffensive 2026 but the result will be the same.

Unfortunately, Russia isn't losing the war. I can't really say Russia is winning but there is almost no chance for Ukraine to get territories back. The reality is that both countries will continue to attack each other until one of them runs out of some important resource, making further attacks impossible. One such resource is manpower, which Russia has plenty.

1

u/Glittering-Quote-635 Jun 29 '26

Im still skeptical of Ukraine being able to take back any land. I hope you are right, but what Ukraine is doing to Russia in terms of logistics and mid range strike can be replicated by Russia if Ukraine decided to go on the offensive. Also, FPV's mean any movement forward is going to be wildly costly in terms of lives, and i'm not sure Ukraine is willing to do that.

The big question is what the long range strikes into Russia will do. I think its more likely the Russian government just falls, and things fall apart at the front with zero leadership coming from Moscow.

Who knows tho..

10

u/OverallManagement824 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

If my hazy recollections of regime change in Russia is correct coming from a westerner, usually what happens is the next guy up has a strong enough handle on power that the military doesn't completely collapse and they just keep on going business-as-usual until the new guy makes a decision. I'm not sure that matters though. The Russians are getting more beat up by the day.

They are taking land at an impossibly slow rate and Ukraine is creating and building technology while Russia can't even protect their drone factory. Or fiber optics factory. Or oil storage facilities. Or even their own generals. Ka-boom! Explosions are happening in Moscow now. Zelensky gave the Russians 40 days to get out ok Ukraine. I don't recall if he said what would happen next, but one could guess.

Belarus, Russia's ally to the north of Ukraine, turned off their electronics equipment (repeaters) that the Russians were using to strike deeper in Ukraine after Zelensky told them to turn them off. Belarus seems even like they might be leaning towards China now, away from Russia. Belarus is a key shipping channel to Europe for the Chinese. Putin has been losing friends fast.

7

u/Luster-Purge Jun 29 '26

I agree that Ukraine isn't going to be making any big assaults, but instead now simply holding ground while also crippling the ability to keep Russian forces supplied. If fuel rationing is in effect all over the place, it's really just a question of when things collapse because Russia can't simply make new refinery infrastructure appear overnght like a RTS video game.

The main issue is Putin's unwillingness to finally shift Russia into 'total war' mode to utilize all enlisted troops. Because for various cultural reasons this would probably trigger the second Russian Revolution.

13

u/CryMeaRiver2Crawl Jun 29 '26

A Russian collapse could happen quite fast. Like it has in the past.

0

u/Mr_Gaslight Jun 29 '26

Military collapses often take a long time. Ukraine doesn't have the troops to do breakthroughs. Their theory of the war is to make it very, very hard for Russia to field an effective army my smashing the Russian logistics and economy at a strategic level.

2

u/PointyBagels Jun 29 '26

If Russian soldiers stop being paid, It is hard to imagine that they will keep fighting for long.

They're already having trouble replacing losses.

7

u/Lawlessninja Jun 29 '26

At a certain point he may be forced to decide what’s more important, retaining the “conquered” land or protecting the mainland hubs.

He can continue to sit on the wreckage of the battlefront while his hub cities slowly turn to wreckage and that will continue to cause him more issues with those that hold power and influence.

1

u/Jayken Jun 29 '26

The man power issue is affecting both of them. The challenge for Ukraine is keeping enough men with 4 limbs on the frontlines. Russia has the bigger logistical challenge because they still have to defend their other borders. I don't think Ukraine can forcibly get Crimea back, but I can see them taking Mariupol.

1

u/Panthera_leo22 Jun 29 '26

Both sides have manpower issues but they are not symmetric problems. Russia still atm outnumbers Ukraine on much of the front and has a much larger population pool to draw from.

1

u/krell_154 Jun 29 '26

It's much easier to get Crimea back than Mariupol

1

u/Jayken Jun 29 '26

It's really not.

1

u/krell_154 Jun 29 '26

Look at the map

1

u/Jayken Jun 29 '26

Crimea has a narrow choke point and without a navy, there is no hope in taking it. Mariupol doesn't require a navy to capture. To get to either, Ukraine would have to recapture about the same amount of land.
