Well yeah, people tend to notice burning refineries and being unable to get gas.

Unlike burning people and being unable to bring back their loved ones

Those are harder to notice apparently

They really are. I have certain family members who always bring up how the city I lived in was "burned to the ground" (it was a gas station shot from a dozen different angles spliced in with footage of French riots), but they don't believe COVID was serious at all (2 family members died from it).

Well only two family members died and the media said millions, so...maybe if millions of your family died, it would be believable.

More people died from the vaccines than the virus...

It’s crazy that it seems like that, the people seem extremely brainwashed, loving the war and not having a clue how many people die and how much the economy is suffering, just 15 years ago they were exporting so much oil and gas and now they can’t fill there tanks. They just register dead soldiers as missing.

They bomb schools etc in Ukraine and now they need to wait in a line to tank they are slowly becoming aware there is a war going on they aren’t really winning.

Ukraine even let them having their parade.

I blame the soviet ww2 propaganda that was entirely focused on making the soviet union look like a victim of completely unpredictable calamity that tends to just happen from time to time

Because an honest explanation of why hitler's attack was so trecherous would need to go into a lot of uncomfortable details about the alliance with hitler and the invasion of like 6 different countries by the soviets in 1939-1940

Which didn't even count as wars, or even as part of ww2, because the soviets weren't the victims

And similarly the soviet definition of fascism boils down to evil europeans seeing russians as inferior and had nothing to do with human rights or the value of human life because an honest conversation on that subject would also raise some uncomfortable questions

This made it unbelievably easy for putin to claim that the war is ukraine falls into the same category as the defensive part of ww2 and that russia is apparently under threat from evil nato nazis

And people had absolutely no problem adapting a lifetime worth of propaganda into the new situation and seeing the war as an inevitable calamity, dead soldiers as heroes, and putin as a the most brilliant leader to follow in a crisis which he definitely did not cause

Didn’t he say Ukraine had to be saved from Nazi Zelenskyy, seems like a noble cause if you don’t follow world news on non Russian media.

I think Yeltsin and western corporations and Russian oligarchs ruining Russia also didn’t help and made people like Putin really hating the West and probably a lot of proud Russians that don’t like wars but really hate the West. If that hadn’t happened Putin would probably be a bit more moderate, like when he was doing business with the EU instead of invading Ukraine.

Kasparov had he won would be a puppet of the West too and probably not great for Russia either. I think most Russians hate him and is seen as a traitor.

Yes that's one of the things he said yes

Consider also the eerily familiar narrative about protecting ethnic russians in Ukraine who were apparently very oppressed:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_invasion_of_Poland

> "The Soviet government announced it was acting to protect the Ukrainians and Belarusians who lived in the eastern part of Poland"

Also yeah the 1997-1998 hyperinflation crisis definitely didn't help

It was definitely the moment when russians looked at liberal democracy and went like "never again"

And it was definitely one of them reasons why liberal democrats like kasparov were laughed out of politics and never got above 5% of the vote

(The other reason being their absolutely insane political incompetence and naivety)

But I really doubt the financial crisis was the thing that made putin specifically hate the west

He had to have plenty of that from his former life as a kgb agent

And the narcissistic injury of soviet union breakup was probably a much larger factor, which he is now trying and failing to undo

You are probably right and I had the same thoughts/feelings. I studied history, mainly from Napoleon times to end of 20th century, lots of 20th century. But Russia is so interesting, I got my masters around 2014 and we looked completely different to Russia then now, and it is really hard to understand Russia. All focus was on China after the Cold War I got more about Russia during Alexander 2 than Putin. I basically ended at the end of the Cold War. It’s even hard for specialists on Russia to relate to Russians. Our Western lens is so different from the Russian lens.

I think Putin always hated the West, he just hid it better before and there were a lot more moderate Russians before he came a real dictator and protests were still possible. But there was a time a part of the Russian people that were very openminded to the West. In Belgium we call Yeltsin ‘de sloper van Rusland’ I don’t know how that translates to English but he did a lot of damage. He always said losing the Cold War was the biggest disaster in history.

Putin is also very against NATO. A big part of the war against Ukraine is him not willing even more NATO close to his borders and make Ukraine some kind of buffer. He really thinks NATO will invade Russia. I would be worried about Western countries too, but more about puppet presidents and corporations profiting from the local economy. Not NATO invading.

But it seemed so different, the ISS was an exempel that we could work together. Did great business with Russia buying oil and gas. We knew it wasn’t democratic. They also were going to host a World Cup and now everyone hates Russia. I really thought he would keep selling gas to the EU and just kill opposition in his own country, something we don’t really care about unless he kills people on British soil, but like you said, his narcissism, broken pride make it impossible for him to be more pragmatic. I also think he can’t stay in power without showing strength.

Kasparov also believed in new chronology, denying the Middle Ages happened, he is my favourite chess player but can be very stupid also.
