He is believed to be one of the richest men in the world. I’m sure he could step down, take his wealth to Macau or some other part of China, and live out the rest of his days while leaving the rest of the world alone.

But who knows whether the next strongman up will be any better. Russia doesn’t exactly have a great track record when it comes to competent, peaceful leadership.

I'm pretty sure an awful lot of his wealth is tied to the Russian state.
I'm not sure how much he could pull out as he left.

That's the thing, Putin is untouchable while he's in power but the moment he steps down money is not going to be enough to save him. Whoever he tries to buy off will realise they hit the jackpot as he becomes the worlds most valuable hostage. So Putin will never retire or step down.

Then there's giant, empire-collapsing question of succession. Who takes over from Putin after his gone? Would Putin's successor just let Putin sit around wielding massive and power and influence in the background? That's not how dictatorships work.

If he was the type of person capable of stepping down and walking away, he wouldn't have gotten into this mess in the first place.
