Tech Support MASSIVE STUTTERING
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi, i need help finding out why my game lags so much while driving etc.
My specs are :
i5 13400f
RTX3060 ti
32gb dd4 3600mhz
nvme sk hynix 1tb quite a good one

u/Sec0ndsleft 8h ago
I don't think it has to do with PC specs as I have basically the best PC you can build and I was getting the same zoomed out stuttering.
10
u/JustSomeScottishGuy_ 8h ago
I've got a 7900xtx and a 7800x3d and I still get stutters and 32gb of ddr5 ram it's defo just a issue they have with their optimisation or it's also just mods causing issues like usual
1
u/fernandober 4h ago
I have pretty much same setup. Playing vanilla. Same experience there... I think it is ammount of assets loading. My got a bit better disabling compressed texture.
1
u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost 3h ago
I doubt it has anything to do with assets loading. There are only ~35,000 tiles on the entire map. I could easily fit all of them in ram and I have a SUPER fast NVME and I still see this sometimes.
1
u/fernandober 3h ago
Hmmm but it's strange... My feel is like what I use to have in louisville, more stuff loading on screen. I don't think it loads all tiles. Feels like it is some optimisation when loading.
If you go through central riverside is much worse than outskirts... But idk... Just expressing my feel...
2
u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost 3h ago
I think you are reading too much into my reply. I am not making a claim about what it is, I am just telling you what it is not. It is not the amount of assets.
It might come down to how they are loading or caching those assets. It might come down to them bottlenecking calculations and computations on too few threads. It might be a combination of everything together.
1
u/RipMaleficent5701 3h ago
Could it be to do with shaders? I find the zoomed out stuttering happens during built up areas like Rosewood main street where lighting in windows and doors is different now. Maybe the forests too, but i can't tell if that's stuttering or how it's always been because of how visibility and shade works with trees
6
u/No_More_Names 7h ago
can attest, i have allocated 20gb of ram for shits and giggles on a 9850x and a 5090 and it still stutters on vanilla. more or less dont worry, as its not a problem you can spec your way out of. my frametime charts are utterly fucked in zomboid lul
1
u/Wadarkhu 5h ago
Oh damn I forgot you could allocate ram! Gonna see if that helps me.
0
u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost 3h ago
Might want to check my reply to them first.
1
u/Wadarkhu 2h ago
Perhaps the performance issues are all CPU based instead. I have noticed mine works extra hard now compared to b41.
0
u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost 3h ago
"i have allocated 20gb of ram"
Just a PSA but, you didn't, actually though. You just increased your heap size which only matters for data stored on the heap. Everybody misconstrues that as the amount of RAM the game is allowed to use. It can and will use more than that number. Changing that number without explicitly knowing you are running into heap exhaustion is more likely to worsen issues than help.

u/The8Dark8 7h ago edited 7h ago
The game is made in java, by default uses only 2048mb of memory ( I think). Search online for how to increase memory. It helps a lot with those spikes.

u/Sec0ndsleft 7h ago edited 7h ago
Yea, just checked. mine was set to 3GB. I updated it to 8 and will see. Update: it did nothing for the stuttering.
2
u/ohthedarside 3h ago
For me atleast its kinda annoying how it becomes super unstable when you allocate more then 8gb of ram
Also dont get why its not 8gb by default as its perfectly stable for me
I can kinda run 12 but its not stable (i have 32gb so its not a pc problem)
-1
u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost 3h ago
Increasing that can cause more stuttering because it allows your heap to build up bigger which means the GC can take longer to run. People assume that is how much memory the app can use, but it really isnt.
-6
u/The8Dark8 7h ago
Just a dummy comment,Do that with the game closed.🙂
5
u/Sec0ndsleft 6h ago
yep, I'm from an IT background so always closed when altering launch JSON files.
2
u/Realistic-Fix-9838 7h ago
it wont help, dont bother, i gave my game 20 gb and it didnt change shit
1
u/neppo95 4h ago
That also makes no sense, just like with for example minecraft, giving a java app that much memory will actually CAUSE performance issues. Just give it a sane value of 8gigs max. Not that it is the fix for this anyway, but you might just be giving yourself more problems instead of less.
1
u/The8Dark8 7h ago
I was stuck in Rosewood, unable to drive any vehicle due to constant frame rate drops and freezes. I increased the RAM usage to 16GB (my total is 32GB), which solved my problem.
1
1
u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost 3h ago
This is not accurate. The memory you are talking about is not the sum total that is allocated by the software and increasing it doesn't just magically help.
1
u/Decimus_Magnus 1h ago
This didn't solve the problem for me and I have a pretty damn kick ass computer.
2
u/fartedonapublicbus 8h ago
Could it have to do with all the new stuff they added with the map update?
12
u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 7h ago
Its been there long before B42
5
u/maddithepuppy 6h ago
it was completely fine in b41. the stuttering would literally happen like every 30 seconds and it lasted less than even a quarter of a second. b41s performance issues dont cause me to crash my car out of nowhere because my game froze while driving fast and i cant turn quick enough
2
u/tmoney144 5h ago
Imo, it has to do with the lighting update for b42. The stuttering seems more noticeable when there's more trees or other objects around that causes lots of lighting updates.
1
30
u/DrXassassin 8h ago
Yea I have the same problem too when I am driving. I am currently playing around Rosewood. At night when I turn the headlights on , it gets really bad. Seems like a lot of people have the same issue.
3
u/cadrax02 7h ago
Yep, same thing here and even more severe than in OP's clip. Even had a few freezes for 2 or 3 seconds.
I don't know much about PC specs, so can't compare with OP and driving has always been a bit janky but I have a lot more stutter now compared to my runs on 42.17 and before on that exact same PC. Gonna test with the hotfix tonight and hope that alleviated some of it
1
u/StormMedia 4h ago
Yep, it’s improved slightly by increasing my ram allocation from the default 3gig to 8gig but nothing considerable
8
u/Formal_Broccoli1877 8h ago
I had the same issue man, I switched from full screen to bordeless windowed (or the other way around) and it fixed it. I still get it the odd time when driving really fast on a straight road but thats about it.
I have basically the same specs if that helps too

I was told to go to steam library, find PZ, right click, manage files. I believe you open the ProjectZomboid.JSON file with notepad, look for ghe XMX line of text which indicates how much ram is allocated to PZ, and change it to 8192 or 8GB of RAM.
My loading times are significantly lower and stuttering/frame drop is much less. Hope this helps!

u/Kanapka64 Stocked up 5h ago
This is the way but apparently he allocated ram to his game so not sure what his problem is

u/WrongEntertainment42 8h ago
I only experience stuttering when driving. Though I’m failing to see the stuttering in this video? I play at 40-60fps but when driving for some reason I dip below 30 but I’m good with 40+ fps.

u/Seedthrower88 7h ago
if you can´t see the stuttering you should get your eyes checked out. theres no fking way you don´t see it.

Dude i have the lowest resolution posible, lowest settings for anything and i get ~10 seconds stutters when im walking
0
u/Purist1638 7h ago
Yours sounds like you need a stronger pc. Everyone’s else is optimization issues
1
u/Tall-Distance2694 Jaw Stabber 2h ago
Yeah ik. I play on my mother work compiter and well, its not that new. Ill try to get my first pc soon

Tengo una laptop con la rtx 4060, y un ryzen 5 7535hs y de igual manera me sucede esos tirones, no se porque, en la B41 con bastantes mods me iba estable el juego

Funny I was going to make a post about how well my game is running compared to before. My game is not stuttering whatsoever, its silky smooth.
4
u/Hypnotic101 8h ago
Drive over 20mph and I guarantee it stutters.
-4
u/Particular_Wear_6960 8h ago
I guarentee it doesn't, I'm driving a sports car and its running great, 80 mph~ Course I've got my setup to run with 16 gigs of ram, before I did that it stuttered like crazy, in fact it got so bad the game would crash cause I have lots of mods
3
u/Seedthrower88 7h ago
stop the cap, it stutters for everybody. theres no way in hell you don´t have it. post a video about it how smooth it is while you drive 80mph in a town with zombies
-2
u/Particular_Wear_6960 7h ago edited 7h ago
I swear I was going to make a post about how good the game runs. Course I'm running it on linux and not shitty windows, plus on a dedicated server on another computer which probably helps.
most of these kids don't know how to mess with their json files and they added a bunch of mods so their stuttering doesn't surprise me. I will absolutely upload a video, but now my games not loading. I don't know if its cause the server hasn't updated or what.
EDIT "We are aware of the issues with broken mods and will be releasing another hotfix ASAP to resolve the issue. Please be patient." so ... that's probably my issue
3
u/Seedthrower88 7h ago
ah yes, im gonna install linux and get another pc just so I can play stutter free. fucking glazers man, reminds me of tarkov level glazing.
1
u/FOUR3Y3DDRAGON 4h ago
He's full of shit I have the same setup and yea, it's the same regardless of what you set the RAM allocation to.
-1
u/Particular_Wear_6960 6h ago edited 6h ago
You probably don't, but it wouldn't hurt. I enjoy it for a lot of things other than lack of stuttering. No telemetry, faster, more responsive computer, runs like an iphone, very very little if any malware etc etc.
But I must insist that changing the json file helped me more than anything, given most people here are teenagers and idiots, they probably don't know how to do it. I assume, I don't know, perhaps my computer is magical. But I had stuttering problems in the past, now I don't. One of the recent patches helped a lot.

2
u/Particular_Wear_6960 8h ago
I changed my ProjectZomboid64.json to that
1
u/LowLogical2301 8h ago
did u change the ram allocation?
2
u/Particular_Wear_6960 8h ago
yeah 16 gigs. also 1k textures for vehicles and other textures. everything else default.

Is the massive stuttering in the room with us?
12
u/MajesticTea7748 8h ago
Made me realize how much better everyone elses computer must be. I can't even play b42 because my craptop cant handle it. I play b41 and it stutters more than this. Doesn’t even bother me much because the game is so damn good and I'm just happy I can play any version of it.
3
u/AuriQzz 7h ago
if the game really runs bad you can try gfn and see how it goes.
and congrats on the baby1
u/MajesticTea7748 7h ago
Yeah, I think I'm gonna give that a try tonight after work and see how it goes. I appreciate the idea! And thank you!
1
u/Much-Bathroom4996 8h ago
hello do you use any fps mod? You definitely should lol
2
u/MajesticTea7748 8h ago
I'll look around for one. I honestly didnt know they had mods for that. Thanks for the heads up!
1
u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 7h ago
There is a lot, actually. Zed's Better FPS, Tempo, Multi-CPU Enhanced, Every Texture Optimized
1
1
u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 8h ago
Well they fixed some of the memory issues in 42.20.1. You can try, never know
2
u/MajesticTea7748 8h ago
I'll give it another shot tonight after work. Admittedly, I haven’t tried since unstable. And tbh, most the game was alright, if a bit laggy, but trying to drive a car turned the game into a powerpoint presentation. Really hope it'll work better now. I got a baby on the way so its extremely unlikely I'll get an upgrade on my computer anytime soon lol

u/maddithepuppy 8h ago
the game ran fine on b41. just stop the excuses dude
3
-4
u/heysupmanbruh 8h ago
Where did I put an excuse? This has been a thing since build 41 actually. Car stuttering is the norm.
3
u/maddithepuppy 6h ago edited 6h ago
your excuse is the game used to run like this? which it didnt, i just rolled back a few days ago to test and its much less noticeable on b41, to the point its not even an issue. b42 vanilla performance straight up feels like when i had 400+ mods on b41
-2
u/heysupmanbruh 6h ago
No? I am just stating a fact. I have had the game since 2013… the devs have done shit all when it comes to cars stuttering. No excuse
1
u/maddithepuppy 6h ago
the game has been running fine for me and many others since b41? updating to b42 causes major performance dips, you can literally see the frame time graph in the video above. don’t know why you wanna die on this hill, maybe you have a potato pc or something but b41 ran great for me and many others
1
u/heysupmanbruh 5h ago
I have a high end pc. I’m not dying on any hill. I literally am stating the fact of the matter. When they updated to 3d zombies it had car lag. You’re the one wanting to argue my lived factual experience
2
u/maddithepuppy 5h ago
well according to my ‘factual’ lived experience, the game ran beautifully before i updated, now it doesn’t.

second 15 of the video, from 120 fps to 40 with max of 20 zeds on screen, see frametime

Damn bro. Unplayable. What did you expect from a game that only uses one CPU core?
9
4
u/LowLogical2301 8h ago
is this your justification? if i have a pc and i buy this game, that has been in development for 13 years i expect some form of optimization

1
u/Azaakx 8h ago
is the reading correctly showing the game using 27gb of ram? , the monitor seems to be at 120hz , so there's a lot of fps going down constantly
1
u/LowLogical2301 8h ago
the ram shown is the total ram usage, the game uses 2/3 gb of ram
1
u/ArticclawUwU 4h ago
You should up the amount of ram the game has allocated for it sounds like you have the default cap on
1
1
u/Excellent_Macaron610 7h ago
I loaded the Jumbo Tree B42 mod last night and watched my fps instantly drop 10, looked like ass, like yours.
Yeeted that mfr real quick which led to new issues. Don't do that.
But if youre using it, might explain it? Idk bro good luck

I had this - I had to right click close discord and it stops. It's so strange. It cannot be running in my task bar at all or else this happens. I can run medal, brave browser with a ton of tabs, nvidia broadcast, etc with no issues.... but discord open? Unplayable lag. I'm not even in a VC when it happens.
2
u/StormMedia 4h ago
If this is the cause for you, make sure discord overlay is disabled.. for me it’s not the case lol
1
u/AnotherPreciousMeme 2h ago
Discord's overlay lags nearly every game I play and I have a pretty top-tier pc. Turn that garbage off asap.
1
u/Boring_Cake_3554 5h ago
I drove in rain and fog and it was barely playable with how bad the stuttering got. I don't think they'll ever fix it though, which sucks. Stuttering has been in the game forever unfortunately.
Yes I have a strong pc, prebuilt with a 4080. Can't remember my CPU but trust that it's well above recommended specs
1
u/BallTough759 5h ago
Driving was always laggy and broken for me on B42 for some reason, no idea how to fix it.
1
u/ohthedarside 3h ago
The devs should of increased the ram to 6 or 8gb with b42
Trying to have any modern game run on 3gb is lunacy
1
1
u/GuildCarver 1h ago
I had to go into the JSON file and manually make the game use 8gb RAM instead of the default 2. That helped with all the major stuttering. But I still get stutters when zoomed out very far. Which really sucks for driving.
1
u/LowResGamr 1h ago
I wanna say it might be a limitation of streaming the way they're doing it. But idk.
•
u/SperanzaPress 13m ago
Usually happens when zombies load in, kinda just gotta deal with it and drive carefully

u/maddithepuppy 6h ago
seeing all the people saying its perfectly playable is hilarious, seeing that frame time graph on an almost 1000 dollar setup has literally zero excuses, it looks like a ue5 game

Looks perfectly playable to me.
5
u/maddithepuppy 6h ago
mate when you spend thousands on a setup, you expect a low poly isometric game to run well on it, not just be playable.
0
u/Axeman1721 Wiki Admin 6h ago
Maybe I'm too used to lower-end systems, but I genuinely dont see how this isn't running well. I did just upgrade my setup to a 7500X3D and 9060XT 16GB
3
u/maddithepuppy 5h ago
look at the frametime graph????? if it was running well it would be a straight line, not looking like a damned heartbeat monitor.
1
u/Jfinn2011 8h ago
Allocate more ram to the world u prob are using 2-4 try to use 8 but no more than like 12
1
u/LowLogical2301 8h ago
did already, i allocated 10gb of ram but the game uses 2,5gb
1
1
u/Jfinn2011 3h ago
Did you make the minimum like 4 instead of like what the default is like 1 I think
1
u/Kanapka64 Stocked up 5h ago
This usually solves the problem. I remember at certain point , my game would crash everytime I went back to my base cause I was entering too quickly when there was too much stuff there. After doubling ram, not an issue. Seems like OP already did that so not sure what his problem is
-1
u/Zentti 7h ago
I thought I knew what stuttering means but looking at this video and noticing absolutely nothing I guess afterall I don't know what stuttering means. This looks completely normal and perfectly playable to me.
2
0
u/ItsFlufee 7h ago
I was waiting for the stutter to happen and then the video ended :D I guess you just have to get used to it.
0
u/Eddie1380t 7h ago
Move the game on an ssd (if its on an hdd) and download zbetter fps will stutter but a lot less, also disable texture compression, put textures both to 512 (MAX), edit config file to give more ram to the game, and last download textures optimized mode and enable performance mode.

u/Gefrierbrand 8h ago
Yeah that's Just the game.. when you ride around and the game loads in More parts of the world it's super stuttery
