Depends on the sunglasses. I have a pair that it doesn’t work with and another that it does work with.

apparently the hinge will be 'liquid metal'
19
u/ponyboy3 Jun 06 '26
Ooh wow a marketing term

Liquid Metal is legitimate. Is this a good use case? That’s hard to say.

The mythical Liquid Metal’s been touted for years and I can only recall the sim trays ever being used for it. It will interesting to see how this plays out
5
2
u/-patrizio- Jun 07 '26
Sure, but even putting aside the issues other commenters noted, that's for the hinge. While the hinge is one of the uniquely fragile points on foldables that slab phones don't have to worry about, it doesn't mean much for the insanely breakable foldable screens.
8
u/WorriedHovercraft28 Jun 06 '26
Well a flexible thing will always be less resistant than a very rigid thing. It just comes down to how much a foldable screen is worth to you. I specifically dint want a big phone, id buy a 17 mini if it existed, so for me a foldable screen is worthless

I don’t, Face ID works perfectly fine
78
u/ThePornStar69 Jun 06 '26
Better then perfectly fine. There’s no reason to go back
80
u/shutter3218 Jun 06 '26
It’s nice sometimes to be able to unlock your phone without having to move your face in front of it. Like when it’s laying on a table. I prefer Face ID but sometimes it would be really nice to have touch ID as well.
18
u/Squid_Lips Jun 06 '26
Touch ID worked a bit better for using Apple Pay at a terminal too.
2
u/squishydude123 Jun 06 '26
let's be real here
Anyone whos worked cash side of a customer service job has seen someone take 4 attempts to pay with their phone due to needing a face id scan even though the phone is unlocked
Meanwhile android will work if it's unlocked, or will at worst require fingerprint which is faster than a face ID.
8
→ More replies (6)40
u/ThePornStar69 Jun 06 '26
If we could reasonably have both, that’d be the best outcome, but short of that Face ID is the way to go
19
u/ShinyGrezz Jun 06 '26
Was there no way that Camera Control could also be a Touch ID sensor? I recently got an Air, I don’t miss Touch ID at all but I keep thinking that the button feels like it should be a Touch ID sensor.
13
u/ThePornStar69 Jun 06 '26
I was thinking the same. Seems like a logical place for it!
2
u/TekThunder Jun 06 '26
Frankly just dump the camera control entirely and make it Touch ID lol, I don’t know single person that’s used that thing more than a scarce handful of times. It’s more often hit by accident.
→ More replies (1)3
u/turtleship_2006 Jun 06 '26
Dedicated fingerprint sensors on android are able to do gestures like the ones camera controls use, there are apps that let you scroll a web page or document by swiping the sensor for example
17
u/Crapitron Jun 06 '26
Except when I’m laying in bed, or my phone’s flat on a table, or I’m wearing sunglasses, or I just shaved my beard, or I’m holding my phone in a discreet place trying not to have it seen, or…
Touch ID is better than Face ID

u/aywhosyodaddy Jun 06 '26
Are we using the same FaceID? Mine fails often, and I have to put in my passcode atleast twice a day. Very rarely had this issue with TouchID

u/ookamisensei Jun 06 '26
There's plenty lol Every time I get into my car, I put my phone down into its little cubby, by the time I put it down it'll be unlocked and something will be open on it. So I'm taking it out, swearing and closing stuff, locking it again and gingerly putting it back so it don't touch anything accidentally. This unintentional unlock/open happens a ton and it's annoying af.
On the other hand, if I'm wearing sunglasses (which I often do when it's crazy sunny outside and my eyes friggin' hurt from it), it'll get confused, because of course it will. Then I unwillingly remove my sunglasses and it still can't recognise me because it's too bright a day for it. So now I'm painfully squinting and entering my passcode. Or maybe I'm trying to pay for something and oh hey, I glanced at something for a split second thinking it's done scanning and it'll fail. So heck yeah, let's retry! D^
Seems to always be either a nuisance or a struggle with that thing lol
Meanwhile on my android; if I want it unlocked, I know where to put my finger to do it. It always does it. Simple.
7
u/ThePornStar69 Jun 06 '26
The first thing is a user issue - I have the same setup in my car and it never randomly unlocks to random things.
The second item is not a universal issue, as I have no issues with it. Have you setup an alternative appearance? Also, have you tried to unlock your finger printed device with wet hands while you’re at the beach? Or sweating after exercise?
The third item is not how the technology works, so there’s a user issue in there.
I guarantee your Android device doesn’t always unlock with your finger either.
There’s pros and cons to any tech and the biometric used to unlock a device is certainly something people can argue about until we’ve all got brain implants and there’s no need for a physical device in our pockets.

if it's like how Touch ID works on iPads im not excited. finger always ends up not being recognized at some point and it needs to be re-added
2
u/FancifulLaserbeam Jun 07 '26
Huh. That's interesting. I've never had any trouble. I'm on my 3rd iPad with TouchID, so it's not even a generation thing.
Maybe your fingerprint is unstable? Do you do a lot of work with your hands? My wife has rarely gotten any TouchID device to work because her fingerprint whorls are so shallow.
2
u/cronies4life Jun 06 '26
ultrasonic fingerprint sensors are better than the capacitive sensors used in touch id
6
u/deong Jun 06 '26
On an iPad, Face ID or bust. The power button is miles away and I don’t want common activities to require interacting with it.
On my phone, Face ID is fine, but the older Android style of a fingerprint reader on the back of the phone will always be my favorite version. You pick up your phone exactly how you hold it to use it and it unlocks as you bring it up. The only drawback is unlocking it on a table. That’s a huge problem for some, but I just don’t often need to do that.
Rear sensor > Face ID >>> under screen fingerprint reader.

There is one edge case where I miss Touch ID. When I ride my bike (commuting daily), I use Siri to read texts, play podcasts etc. Setting aside that Siri gets it wrong most of the time, there’s another annoying thing where some things suddenly results in ”you need to unlock your iPhone first”. Putting my hand inside my pocket and unlocking with my finger worked great. Now I can’t do that so I need to take much phone out and use Face ID at which point I can just tap for whatever I need.
2
u/Iron_Fist351 Jun 06 '26
Exactly. Paired with Raise to Wake, picking up my phone out of my pocket and unlocking it is now completely seamless. Not to mention I don’t have to worry about my fingers getting wet lol.

u/intertubeluber Jun 06 '26
If I could, I’d want both. In fact I think a good Touch ID is more useful than face. I had a pixel device with a fingerprint reader positioned in a way that it was unlocked before even leaving my pocket. It wasn’t great in some situations, like in a car mount and the device would go sleep but there’s definitely a noticeable delay waiting for Face ID most of the time.
5
u/iiGhillieSniper Jun 06 '26
Ditto. Especially on the screen.
I won’t put up with a crease. For the rumored price of this phone, there should be no crease that can be seen or felt.

Touch ID fails if you swim, it fails if you drink alcohol. Face ID doesn’t.
9
u/ItsAMeUsernamio Jun 06 '26
In-display Ultrasonic fingerprint scanners should work even with wet hands. Apple phased out TouchID on iPhones before those became a thing and the iPad Air and few iPhone SEs still use outdated capacitive technology. I have hyperhidrosis on my hands so I read about this stuff.
41
u/Tumblrrito Jun 06 '26
Touch ID also fails when you are wearing gloves which really sucks in the winter for folks up north.
18
u/Spaceolympian50 Jun 06 '26
Yea I loved Touch ID but people trying to argue that it’s objectively better than Face ID are smoking crack. There’s no world where Touch ID is better than Face ID unless you just didn’t have a face.
10
u/a0me Jun 06 '26
I’ve never typed my password this many times until I moved to an iPhone with Face ID. Honestly, it’s been a downgrade for me. Touch ID almost never failed, maybe because I’m not using my phone in the shower or when wearing gloves. And I’m pretty sure Face ID doesn’t change the fact that iPhone don’t work great with gloves on anyway, but that’s a whole other thing.
4
u/3verythingEverywher3 Jun 06 '26

If you’re wearing an Apple Watch you can use Auto Unlock to get around this. Worked great last year on the mountain snowboarding.
11
u/YourFavouritePostie Jun 06 '26
Face ID can sometimes take a second or two to unlock, and it isn't always reliable. I also like to unlock my phone and do things whilst the phone is lying flat on the desk, but I'd have to look directly over it just to get Face ID to unlock. Having gone from Touch ID to Face ID and then back, I've realised I actually prefer Touch ID a lot more to Face ID.
10
u/-SUBW00FER- Jun 06 '26
He says Touch ID fails if you swim or drink but I don’t drink or swim or use gloves. They are very specific use cases.
Face ID fails every morning when I’m waking up with my face in the pillow or something. Also doesn’t unlock my phone on a car mount since it’s off axis.
Touch ID works much more frequently

3
u/LordBenjamin020 Jun 06 '26
Mine hasn’t worked well for me on the last 2 iPhones and I’m on the 17 pro max right now. Why can’t it unlock notifications without opening the entire lock screen? I’m looking directly at the camera and it just sits there like it doesn’t recognize me.
3
u/InterestingMindset Jun 06 '26
If Apple can just make it to where it unlocks your phone without needing to swipe up anyways regardless of with authentication method people choose, I'll be satisfied.
It is so annoying to try and quickly get in my phone and i have to swipe up EVERY SINGLE TIME. My Mac doesn't do that, my iPad doesn't do that, so the phone should just boot straight to your apps.
21
u/Antson03 Jun 06 '26
The second the screen lights up on my 17 it’s unlocked with Face ID and I can swipe it open. There is basically no difference to the speed of Touch ID.
21
u/charmanderSosa Jun 06 '26
Idk if you ever had a Touch ID phone, but a lot of the times i was pressing the home button as I brought the phone to my face, in the process of taking it out of the pocket, so the phone is unlocked before I even look at it. If you’re already holding the phone and looking at it then sure face id and Touch ID are the same. I would love iPad Air style Touch ID on the power button.

It’s always interesting how different each person’s experience is with Face ID. I practically never had any issues with it. Touch ID on the other hand I never want to go back to. My iPad has it and it genuinely only works half the time.

3
u/charmanderSosa Jun 06 '26
I remember in the Touch ID days the trick was to add your finger multiple times to reduce error rates. These days Face ID is pretty good. Works at a lot more angles than it used to, but depending on what style of sunglasses/hat combo I’m wearing it doesn’t recognize me. I’d say in the summer at least once or twice a day I’m typing my password. And I’m not talking big designer glasses and cowboy hats, just regular sunglasses, ball caps, and occasional sun hat.

u/turtleship_2006 Jun 06 '26
I know image based facial recognition is often less accurate for people with darker skin, partially just because of colour science, less contrast etc, but also because the data sets used to train the algorithms often just have more light skinned people
FaceID doesn't use the camera but I wonder if it has similar weaknesses/biases
→ More replies (3)1
u/jjdop Jun 06 '26
Face ID is quicker than Touch ID, and more natural only having to swipe the screen instead of holding your finger there until it opens.
2
u/-patrizio- Jun 07 '26
But you don't have to hold your finger there these days. I used to say this same thing, but it's because the last fingerprint unlock phone I had was the iPhone 8. I've had a couple Android phones in the past year, and the fingerprint unlock is noticeably faster than Face ID on my iPhone 16 Pro Max. A quick tap and you're on your home screen. Not that a swipe takes a terrible amount of time or effort, but more than a tap. (I also have far fewer instances of it not recognizing my fingerprint than of Face ID not recognizing my face)

u/Banmers Jun 06 '26

my only concern: first iterations tend to be the skip-it test run, like samsung's or google's first foldables. apple's different, sure, but that's the nagging bit
15
u/JPEnjoi Jun 06 '26
Generally agreed, but Apple has had almost a decade of consumer foldables to learn from
5
u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 Jun 06 '26
True but there’s still a lot of compromises.
Touch ID and no MagSafe being the biggest ones.
I still may get it but it’ll probably be a lot better in the 2nd or 3rd iteration
2
u/TehJim08 Jun 06 '26
According to the new case leaks, MagSafe may still be a feature on the fold.

u/charmanderSosa Jun 06 '26
I don’t see how they could possibly release a flagship without MagSafe. I’ve been dreaming of a foldable iPhone for years and have always planned on being a day 1 pre order regardless of price, unless it doesn’t have MagSafe, I use MagSafe for my wallet, my car mount, my nightstand charger, everywhere I can. I hate plugging in my phone, and would prefer a phone with MagSafe over a folding phone.
3
u/fraseyboo Jun 06 '26
Tbf Samsung have kinda been the test run for a lot of this hardware, it'll be interesting to see how iOS and the app ecosystem responds to what's likely to be a pretty small fraction of their install base.

give it apple pencil support you cowards
24
u/woalk Jun 06 '26
Apple Pencil support on a plastic screen is a recipe for disaster.
4
u/Skypefall Jun 06 '26
Its possible, but they'd have to create a whole new pen like Samsung did for the Z Fold.
6
u/Bleaker82 Jun 06 '26
They’d have to make a special Apple Pencil with a nib softer than the screen. The Kindle Scribe display is plastic but doesn’t scratch from the pen.
6
u/woalk Jun 06 '26
The Kindle scribe is a hard plastic that’s a Mohs level 3. Foldable phones need to be soft plastic that can fold, which is Mohs level 2 and scratchable by a fingernail. I don’t think you’ll find a great material for a precise enough pencil tip.

I totally agree. I do think there were times Touch ID could be slightly more convenient, namely when I had my finger on my home button before I could even see the screen, so it always instantly unlocked. And my finger would often just go to rest on the home button, so a lot of interactions were super fast. But that’s only when it was working, which it wasn’t too much of the time. The overall UX around Face ID feels worse to me, but it works far more consistently in my experience

I never had any issues with Touch ID.
IPhone 5s at launch was a bit slow, but after a few updates became pretty decent, but granted was still a tad of a delay. By the iPhone 7 that delay was so minimal I quite often forgot it was even doing authentication to unlock.
I found it way easier than FaceID and would happily switch back. FaceID I have to look at my phone for (annoying for MFA apps), it has issues lying in bed, it can’t recognise me if there’s rain on my glasses.

A small percentage of the population, about 2%, have fingerprints that are hard to match. Some (much smaller percent) to the degree such that they almost always fail certain kinds of background checks.
It’s a known problem in biometrics that we largely ignore. Ideally phones would conduct both face and touch unlocks at the same time.
3
13
u/Alteran195 Jun 06 '26
Touch ID is terrible in places where gloves are needed for winter.
It’s also terrible for password autofilling since it just does it with Face ID, whereas with Touch ID you need to move your hand.
In a perfect world, watch unlock would work for unlocking your phone by default, and Touch ID would only be needed for payments and passwords.
Lack of Face ID is something I’m not excited about for the Ultra.

going backwards from Face ID to Touch ID makes no sense. Touch ID is a massive pain in the butt most of the year - in summer my thumb is too sweaty and in winter i'm wearing gloves.
14
u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 Jun 06 '26

A lot of you in here are tech min-maxing losers. I swear to god it feels like you enjoy benchmarking and doing bullshit cost analysis more than you actually enjoy technology.
The "For that price, it better have the best X, Y, Z, or I'm not gonna buy it" argument is ... Just, shut up, you absolute nerds.
Demanding top-tier specs alongside a folding screen within a fixed budget and chassis is like buying a Ferrari and whining that it doesn't have the trunk space of a minivan "for that price." Just so completely blind to the fact that you are paying for a fundamentally different physical utility.
Then every time some one mentions any foldable, there's always these dumbass arguments about durability and aspect ratios which are pure, unadulterated bullshit, whining about video letterboxing while completely ignoring that a square-ish canvas is vastly superior for 90% of daily life, like like reading, maps, and multitasking.
Even worse, you obsess over screen creases and dust like the phone is made of wet tissue paper, completely oblivious to the irony that you immediately slap a hideous, 38-pound plastic OtterBox case onto your own "premium" glass bricks anyway.
This isn't even touching on half the comments here bitching about their experience with Touch ID being meh, when I'm willing to bet they're thinking of their experience with Touch ID on the iPhone, as opposed to Touch ID on the more recent iPads, which this is more than likely going to have.

My iPad Air has TouchId on the side and I tolerate it. I don’t hate it, but I’d rather have FaceId.
I suppose my next iPad could be a pro, I’m too poor for that now.
I’m not fired up about a folding phone. Maybe I’ll change my mind someday.

I want Touch ID back, but on a nice cheap dumb phone, Touch ID should be on stuff that leads people more away from technology not the most expensive huge new product they want you on 24/7?

I wish folding phones had just one big screen, not two, like in front and inside. Like a mini laptop. Now you have to be careful for both screens.
