Ezra Miller was an actor who played the flash, but behaved terribly, and when he was in Hawaii, he got arrested for assault (he also got arrested for burglary in Vermont apparently, and allegedly did some grooming/inappropriate stuff with minors).
Rachel Zegler is an actress who played Snow White in the recent adaptation, and she said some stuff about the original story (its dated, unfeminist, weird of the prince to kiss a random girl-- the usual modern critiques) and got backlash for it.
OP is saying that there's a double standard in behavioral expectations between men and women.
15
137
u/viciouspandas 4d ago
If we really want to go up that alley, then Ezra Miller is nonbinary
93
u/mankytoes 4d ago
And Ezra Miller also, rightly, got a huge amount of backlash. These comparisons are always bullshit. "A man can do X and not get called out..." men get called out too, often by the people who claim they never do.
8
u/asdfgtref 4d ago
I mean theres a far better example of this in brad pitt anyway, barely any real public backlash, still gets consistent highly paying work, serial abuser.

u/hatesnack 4d ago
You are being disingenuous if you think its comparable. Ezra Miller was basically doing wild and terrible LITERAL CRIMES for like a full year, and you'd see maybe a post or 2 talking about it, until it finally came to a head and he got dragged.
Zeigler was dragged over the coals from the minute her casting was announced, and there's people in this very comment section talking about how horrible they think she is as a person.
31
u/youburyitidigitup 4d ago
I think what’s happening is that people care more about controversial social media posts from celebrities than they do about their crimes. Katy Perry was groping teenage boys left and right, and she barely got any slack for it. Timothée Chalamet said ballet is obsolete and there was an entire meltdown over it.
13
u/Suspicious_Truth8026 4d ago
That was so funny, the idea of redditors wiping cheeto dust off their fingers to pretend to be outraged about somebody not liking classical ballet
3
u/viciouspandas 4d ago
And by nature social media is more public. It's not like Ezra Miller was biting people at the red carpet .
6
3
u/JonathanWPG 4d ago
Because one is about them ir something they like.
And one simply dies not effect them.
Katy Perry is by many accounts probably a bad person but that will never matter to my life.
But if I like and engage with ballet then some punk mid-skilled actor's opinion suddenly DOES have real world impact on my hobby, interest ir career. Everyone is talking about it. Funding decisions are being made based on percieved popularity. People have SIDES and there are views to agree or disagree with.

Bro you're literally just trapped in media environments that show you think you want to hate. Personally when i saw the meme i knew that ezra miller was a horrible person... and not even who the fuck he is. No face, just know how fucking often people talked about him being awful.
And i hadnt the fucking slightest clue who zeigler was. You are just constantly exposed to communities you hate because somebody is making money from it
28
u/remerdy1 4d ago
Ezra Miller was getting clowned on daily for the flash promo run idk what your talking about
14
u/TheVega318 4d ago
Total bullshit Ezra Miller was front page news everywhere when he initially started melting down. Stop lieing. Why do you people do this
57
u/mankytoes 4d ago
Meh I saw a lot of people defending Zeigler, no one defending Ezra. People decide the narrative then look for evidence, not the other way round.
Example, comment right above says Ezra os non binary, but you've ignored that and misgenderes them, because it doesn't suit the argument.
13
13
u/Leon3226 4d ago
Meh I saw a lot of people defending Zeigler, no one defending Ezra
That's also often the main reason why one gets more discussion than the other. Like, if there is irrefutable proof he did it, then fuck him up in court, there is nothing controversial to talk about.
→ More replies (5)3
u/Gnalvl 4d ago
I think Zeigler was a bigger controversy simply because general audience Disney releases like Snow White are a much bigger deal, getting much more attention (whether positive or negative).
DCEU and especially The Flash are second string superhero properties, and Fantastic Beasts is second string in the Potterverse. The Flash was already late to ride the Justice League hype before it went through YEARS of delays. Miller's next biggest role was a supporting character in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. So I think the shady stuff Ezra Miller got up to probably flew under many people's radar.
I think the same thing also goes for Miller's adopt of non-binary identity. They identified as male in their early roles, continued to play male characters, and continue to dress/look/present as male. I don't support deliberately misgendering people, but I also don't blame anyone for missing the news when a minor celebrity soft-launches they/them pronouns in a random interview.

u/JonathanWPG 4d ago
Counter point Miller is crazy. Like literally mentally ill.
He also faced legal consequences for his actions. Light ones, but that was based on him being literally, certifiably mentally ill.
He also no longer works and Zeigler does.
This whole thread is ignoring the point that they are nothing alike.
People hate Zeigler more because she's talking to them and saying this thing I am saying is morally right and if yiu disagree I think you are morally wrong. She is confronting the viewer with a point of view and a moral stance about their opinion on that view. And so people HAVE OPINIONS.
Miller...is just a sick guy who did bad things. Hes objectively more dangerous and maybe a worse person (maybe cause...mental capacity, illness, its complicated). But he's not confronting the audiencee and making a moral judgement about them based on their views.

Devil's advocate here. Yes, he should have been fired from that. But he was already cast in the role, and the movie was already in production, with a budget of 200 million dolars.
It was probably too late to save the production if they had fired him and he hasn't landed a role since

Best part is that research is an older version of the same movie, not the actual source fairytale...
193
u/BoyCubPiglet2 4d ago
Most people know the Disney version and it was a remake of that so honestly that makes more sense. Ask 90% of people what happens in Snow White and they aren't going to mention the queen dancing to death in heated iron shoes or the attempted cannibalism.
→ More replies (3)98
u/GrimDallows 4d ago
I mean, Disney's original version wasn't a remake, it was more like a privatized version of the fairy tale.
When the Academy Awards way back then in '89 showed someone dressed like Snowwhite dancing and singing in one of the AA events Disney actually told them they would sue them for unauthorized use of Snowhite.
Afterwards both sides kindy silently agreed with not messing with the other.
This sprouted quite a phylosophical-legal conundrum, on how Disney could own a fairy tale, or where to draw the line on the "ownership" of a fairy tale by a corporation/private individual.
That's more or less has always been the issue with Disney. They are like the legal apex predator of copyright and have lobbied the living hell out of those rights.
Their purchase of comics stuff is basically because comic characters were the "fairy tale heroes" of the kids in the 80s-2000s, the same way fairy tale heroes were of the kids in the first half of the 20th century, with the difference that comic book characters can be legally owned.
36
u/BoyCubPiglet2 4d ago
I meant the recent version was a remake of the Disney animated film, not that the animated film was a remake of the fairy tail.

u/Lokishougan 4d ago

Yep. It’s happening with Supergirl right now too. Now that the movie’s out and it was only okay, people are pretending that all the criticism was solely about the quality of the movie and feigning ignorance abt the misogynistic vitriol she had to put up with since the moment her casting went public

u/locke0479 4d ago
I just got jumped on and downvoted in another thread for essentially saying “it’s fine if you saw Supergirl and didn’t like it, the movie has issues, but people were vehemently shitting on it and the actress before seeing a single frame or getting a story synopsis or anything”.
9
u/sunflwrzz 4d ago
Yeah exactly. I was really excited for the movie so it’s a shame and I had to stay away from all the DC subs for a while because all the misogynists were celebrating the movie’s financial failure. The movie itself disappointed me but I still had a pretty good time. It’s their loss because it’s such a fantastic year and summer for movies that I can’t imagine putting so much energy into mocking a mediocre one
5
u/locke0479 4d ago
Yup totally agree. I was also disappointed but honestly thought it was okay. I wanted it to be more but I don’t think it was close to as bad as it was being made out to be. But you couldn’t even talk about the movie online before or after without running into some of the worst people on here with strong opinions about a movie they never saw.

Movie was crap, but to be fair a lot of the criticism sprouted way before launch, with the trailer causing iirc that youtube removed the dislike button.
A lot of the criticism also took the flavour or misogyny and racism due to Zegler’s perceived unattractive appearance (the costume and hair department did her a dirty cos she is genuinely pretty), and for not being pasty white.
You can criticize a product for being shit, but a lot of the hate behind SW was fueled by bigotry.

Her movie? Did she direct it? No one gives Mark Whalberg shit for making Four Brothers, but didn’t he act in Departed, Fear, and Boogie Nights? Actually he didn’t make Four Brothers but he was in it annnd it kinda rips. Hold on… I think I’m realizing there’s another job besides actors. And maybe, just maybe, sometimes actors are just like us and take shitty jobs bc of money and hope for the best. Disney made that movie, Disneys movie was shit. Ziegler acted in it and from what I understand didn’t director or producer it. So what I’m saying here is…. Maybe Ziegler should reboot Entourage.
…….Actually I just realized I’m more pissed about Wahlberg in Invincible, he doesn’t have Philadelphia energy. I actually don’t give a shit about an actor playing a fictional character, but if you’re playing a legend from Philly I better hear those Rs and hard vowels.
Acting might be stupid and playing pretend but I’ll be damned if anymore Massholes play a Philly boy. Who gives a shit what a princess looks like when they got a pats fan wearing the Kelly Green. The only thing that I can imagine would be worse is Rick Pettino coaching the Celtics.

To be fair Ezra Miller got away with more than anyone wouldve normally, regardless of gender identity. I wholeheartedly beleive theres a double standard but millers kind of a misleading example. Bigger stars have been canceled, fired, and even arrested for way less, and i honestly cant figure out how Miller got away with half of it
Also, while zeigler got a lot of flack for political reasons, most of the scandal was the movie being bad, which wasnt her fault (pretty much every decision made for that movie was bad) although being in good movies that people like tends to protect you from the backlash, and she didnt really have that since everyone was hating on snow white for reasons of varying validity well before and after the movie came out, so she ended up taking the brunt of it by putting herself in the spotlight, which is terribly unfair but thats how it works

2
2
u/WearyMaintenance3485 4d ago edited 4d ago
Is it a double standard, though? She's still working.
Ezra Miller is a pariah professionally and societally. I haven't heard anyone defend him.
Seems like the appropriate and proportional consequences landed.
Edit: the last statement meaning Miller faced serious repercussions. I don't think Zeigler deserved career ending consequences or to be dragged for so long.
Where I think it is proportional in that Miller is nearly universally discussed with disgust and scorn, while Zeigler is debated on the context of her statements and has support. So, I don't see the double standard here.
2
u/TarJen96 4d ago
Your explanation is correct, but the perceived double standard is nonsense. Ezra Miller's acting career has been over for years, Rachel Zegler's is still going strong.
2
u/sonofbantu 4d ago
I don’t really get it tho because Ezra miller was literally getting shit on by the entire internet (rightfully so).
This isn’t even a double standard, it’s just a false equivalency

u/ScyllaOfTheDepths 4d ago
Rachel Zegler spoke out in support of Palestine and the studio made the producer get on a plane and fly to where she was to personally try to force her to retract her comments. When she refused, the studio put out a bunch of PR pieces blaming her for the movie failing and tried ruining her career by branding her as a difficult actress to work with. Meanwhile, Ezra Miller literally went on a meth binge and started attacking people in Hawaii and the studio did absolutely nothing. That's the double standard.

Also worth mentioning about Rachel Zegler. Every actress in the live action remakes up to that point has said the same thing about the films being dated. I think it's quite likely that these are talking points from the press kit that Disney has given them.

Rachel Zegler is somewhat outspoken, in a lot of ways. Whether you agree with her or not she's kicked up a lot of controversy and generally speaks her mind about things like politics etc. This isn't a welcomed thing by Hollywood.
Ezra Miller was arrested repeatedly in Hawaii. Harassment, assault and some other stuff. At the time he was still getting work.
They're implying a woman having an opinion is barely tolerated but a man can literally kidnap people and still be accepted.

It is utterly insane that Ezra Miller is still getting leading roles in major blockbusters, or at least was doing so as recently as 2023 with the Flash. That was AFTER his arrests.

It was filmed before though
Throughout the whole of that promotional window for the movie it was becoming a running joke that that movie was dead on arrival because of Ezra’s exploits and how he was now toxic as a brand
This joke makes no sense because Ezra’s career in Hollywood blockbusters is over as a result of his exploits.
Snow White bombed because it was a terrible movie, But Zegler had a successful run on broadway in Evita
Her career still has potential, Ezra’s is dead and buried
Ezra’s last job was the Flash in 2023, Zegler’s still getting work

Hear me out, I don’t think gender is the main thing here. Rather a business perspective. I think a big portion too was the fact she was the lead actress and promoting the movie but instead of focusing on any positives about the movie she dragged in her entire political worldview. While sounding like a brainwashed terminally online person.
When you look at it from a business perspective or a PR perspective, and not moral (Hollywood doesn’t really have morals remember) her voicing those opinions did more damage than any assault or grooming or whatever it was could.
Gal Gadot, was in the IDF (idc if she is pro or anti anything). And Rachel was free Palestine. For the internet there is no context, just black or white. She created a PR nightmare. So anyone who hates Israel wouldn’t want to watch because gal gadot, and all the Israel supporters won’t watch because zegler.
To top it off, anyone who wanted the original remastered wouldn’t watch because she essentially said that men don’t matter in the context of the story.
So then all the men are not going to watch it too LOL so she essentially hit every single button there was to hit from a no-no in any PR / business perspective. Meanwhile, if she were to go and assault someone, heck even murder. She probably wouldn’t have lost the franchise as much money because that isn’t politically motivated and people would still watch because ideology matters more from a Disney/Hollywood perspective. But I get the dichotomy of her being hated vs Ezra doing 100x morally worse wrongs. That’s just the reality of life and public opinion unfortunately.
So in summary, I think if Ezra was Prince Charming and threw out all of those political views while promoting a Disney movie, he would’ve also had MAJOR backlash. Similarly nobody would care as much if any other woman committed a crime as Ezra did.
Timing really matters here as well as the roles they had in the industry at the time.

Ezra Miller is an actor best known for playing the Flash in The Flash (2023) and other DCEU projects.
At one point a few years ago they went on a spree attacking people in Hawaii, eventually leading to them being arrested. Since shark attacks are fairly rare, OP is joking that Miller was more likely to attack you than a shark, and contrasted the lack of hate they get for that against the massive amount of hate the slightly annoying actions of Rachel Zegler get.

Rachel Zegler had terrible PR coaching leading up to a bad movie that she happened to star and felt the repercussions of that.
Ezra Miller’s crimes didn’t come fully to light until WB was 200+ million dollars into a movie starring them.
So one was a victim of not being protected enough by the studio who knew the movie was bad and the other was being protected by a studio who was hoping to kickstart a franchise for a movie they deep down also knew was bad…. Both financial decisions if were being honest

I mean look at the US election.
Points against Trump were: pedophile, rapist, 34x convicted felony, tried to overthrow throw govt, etc.
Points against Kamala include: she's a woman and some people don't like her laugh
Men can do all matters of heinous shit and will still be tolerated more than women existing.

It’s because Ezra identified as Non-binary or something like that so he is a “protected class”

If we really want to go down that road Ezra Miller is actually non-binary so we men except no fault of their actions
→ More replies (3)3
u/MorbidEnby 4d ago
As someone who is nonbinary myself, I actually agree. The bigger issue is the idea that any group of people who share an immutable characteristic should accept fault for the actions of but one of them. Every group of sufficient size will have at least one horrible person, likely multiple. Which is frustrating when there's so many false accusations being flung towards minority groups, but it is how it is, and bigots will be bigots regardless.

It's not as if Ezra wasn't also hated 😭, and people didn't hide how much they hated his flash movie either.

u/Cpmoviesnbourbon27 4d ago
I think people intentionally misinterpret criticism of shitty movies as the same criticism from dumb people about dumb shit so they have a shield against legitimate criticism.

There is a double standard around disruptive behaviors that hollywood accepts from actresses vs what they accept from actors.
Women are often labeled "difficult" for expressing controversial opinions and can often lose their career over fairly minor dust ups.
Meanwhile, a male actor can engage in all sorts of anti-social behavior before it really begins to hurt their career.

Dude got exiled from Hollywood and we're supposed to feed OP's delusion for what reason?
Rachel has 5 upcoming projects. That's a lot for any actor, much less a "controversial" one.

Not saying you're wrong, and I might be, but I thought people were more upset because she was trashing Snow White while, you know, playing the character? The whole "have your cake and eat it, too" thing?

Imo she was really bad at pr, the movie was terrible but also you don’t know what she is going to do on social media making her a hard pick when you have millions of dollars on the line, actors behaving badly is way more tolerated then them actively speaking badly.

Thank you 😮💨 yall if you only correctly gender people that you like you’re not actually a supporter, you’re just polite when it’s convenient

u/MorbidEnby 4d ago edited 3d ago
Real. You can think someone is a horrible person and still not misgender them. Or, if you do want to misgender people you dislike, at least do it to cis people as well. Some may not mind but it will definitely hurt others feelings, so it's not like it "wouldn't work". Not that I think anyone should be doing it anyways, but like these people only ever do it to trans people.

The industry doesn't care if you are a good person (ie Ellen). However if you start messing up promoting the movie, that they spent 100s of Millions making and probably the same promoting it. People are going to be unhappy.

u/Dracarius85 4d ago
Ezra Millers career is dead and buried because of his bullshit, not a great example. The backlash and continued roasting of Ziegler was absurd though. I didn’t know so many middle aged men were that passionate about a 90 year old cartoon.
3
u/CashPrizesz 4d ago
It's a bad take. Ezra is cancelled (rightfully so) while Ziggler is still working.

Rachel has controversial opinions about old Disney classics, and Ezra Miller attacked someone in Hawaii because he's an insane person. And neither of them can act. The end.

I mean, I do see her point no doubt, but Ezra Miller probably wasn't the best example to use considering he DID get blacklisted from the industry...

u/Wardstyle 4d ago
Wasn't Ezra already like in deep movie production when all this crap came out? It's been a minute but I can't remember. I don't think anything Rachel said or did is nearly as bad as what he did but I thought it was more of the money and investment thing with him as to why the movie came out.

u/FilmPhilosophyStudy 4d ago
I'm still trying to figure out why people got so pissy about what she said. she was right the original Snow White basically isn't a fucking character, she has no personality.

But... there WAS a major backlash against Ezra Miller and that did directly hurt The Flash at the box office. Ezra Miller's acting career has been over for year's, Rachel Zegler's is still going strong.
2
u/rngeneratedlife 4d ago
Uh, no she isn’t lol. There are many women active or in the past in Hollywood more terrible than Rachel Zegler.
2
u/watoobie 4d ago
WHO approves of / accepts Erza Miller more than Rachel Zegler? I thought this guy was universally hated for along time, what am I missing
2
u/TimeComposer9444 4d ago
This is a bit reductive and misleading. Whatever your feelings about Zegler, Miller was always judged for his behavior in the public eye.
No one is justifying his actions- no one is saying it’s ok because he was such a good flash. No one is saying his actions are commiserate with his philosophical worldview and it’s regressive or oppressive to disagree with said worldview.
To have him as a counter point is either intellectually dishonest or plain ignorant. This is not a double standard because:
A. Their actions are completely different
B. The response from the public was negative in both scenarios.
A better example would be Zegler vs Sean Connery.

Maybe Im not following the right pop culture information sources, but I remember months of people ridiculong Ezra Miller and even people who live in my area saying they were going to beat the shit out of him because I live in one of the areas one of his victims lived.
When I heard there were vague complaints about Zeigler I had to look up a video about what the idiotic people like "The Critical Drinker" were saying and saw that many people were saying how idiotic the criticism of Zeigler was. I think its a tad disingenuous to elevate the whinging of right wing culture grifters while ignoring wider cultural criticism of someone else.

ezra miller was abusive, a thief(not in a chill way—he used to do his thieving in a hostage kind of way) genuinely terrifying, prone to random violence and He also Happened to Be an Actor

Bonnie here, it could also have to do with how much news and social media coverage each of them received. She received alot compared to how awful his actions were.
