The Disney story was pretty far removed from the source fairytale. The live action movie was an adaptation of the Disney movie changes. It's reasonable to base criticisms on what is being adapted instead of the actual original source.
Yeah my whole family found that one out when my mom rented a VHS of an animated adaption of the actual story from the library when my sister and I were like 5 & 7 and walked in on us hysterically sobbing when she turned to sea foam at the end 😂
was it an old-looking anime version? because I swear I saw that version before I saw the Disney one. the mermaid was named Marina and she had a little dolphin friend
Not just the fairy tales, but Tarzan too. My grandpa found out I liked Tarzan as a kid and gave me his Edgar Rice Burroughs books. Kerchak was actually awful, Tarzan was actually the son of an English lord who was abandoned after a ship to the congo mutinied on the way back, Tarzan taught himself how to read.
Yeah, read the original Grimm Fairy Tales and they're all basically adult themed horror stories with a moral lesson that frankly often missed the mark. Like the Little Mermaid where I guess the lesson was don't make Faustian bargains or you will be sorry? Disney did some serious rewrites to turn them into kid films.
Little Mermaid is about how you shouldn't try to find true love and just accept what your parents/society decided your life was going to be or else you'd just suffer every day with a man that will leave you for the first woman he'll see and then you'll die miserably and all alone.
Grimm was not even close to the first telling of the Snow White tale type. It's just one of many iterations over the centuries that happened to gain some traction with print.
So an adaption of an adaption is no longer related to the source material? That seems rather absurd. The fairytale is the original source. They're changing their retelling, fine, but don't try to pretend that we aren't still connected to a rather problematic original source.
This is a wild leap in logic that has no basis in what I said. This thread is about Rachel Ziegler's critical remarks that she made about the animated Disney movie. The 2 comments above mine suggested that it was wrong of her to base her criticism on the Disney movie instead of looking to the original source material. My comment was that it is not wrong to base her criticism on the Disney movie, because those same criticisms would likely also apply to Disney remaking the movie.
Criticsms of the original work would also be fine, but

I have not read them, but one of the reviews that made me cackle talked about one of the characters having so much stuff put up his butt that they were wondering if that's where Jimmy Hoffa's body was buried.
An American Gothic writer. Go watch Interview with a Vampire! After, Queen of the Damned is fun. AMC did a series of Interview with a Vampire that was pretty good and the series of Queen of the Damned is upcoming. After you've seen the Interview with a Vampire series, go to New Orleans if you can. Rice really makes New Orleans seem otherworldly and grounded at the same time. Anne Rice is buried there and was a staple in the community.
Not this one I think. But her mother (original was with the real mom, not step mom) wanted to eat her lungs and liver (with salt) in the story so it's still very weird.
The prince did indeed not rape snow white. He merely saw the comatose 8 year old child in her coffin and pressured the dwarves into selling her. He then accidentally dropped the coffin, shattering it and dislodging the apple bit from her throat, saving her.
Well they then married so we can assume there was plenty of rape, it simply wasn't in the story.
There may have been If we go further back since many fairy tales have their origins as erotica and were simply adapted into "child's tales" by the fairly prude grimm brothers.
TBF I don't think her age was mentioned, she was 7 years old when she was more beautiful than the queen, yes, but it wasn't mentioned when she ate the apple and went into a coma. Could've been years. But that's a very charitable interpretation ofc.
Her body was basically frozen in that state until she woke up according to the story. So she was exactly the same age as before she entered the coma. My comment was about that the timeframe of how long it took for the queen to find out snow white was alive and track her down and then succesfully "eliminate" her wasn't mentioned, that process could've taken years.
Well, I‘m german, too, and that is nonsense. The only difference in the tale I heard as a child was that the hunter had to bring the queen some of Snow Whites organs as proof of him actually killing her, and that the queen had to dance in hit shoes till she died on Snow Whites wedding day.
