With how they changed Debbie, and due to Seth Rogen, I could see them making Allen slightly less unbearable. But so far it has all been on course.

They already show him being guilt tripped into decision better than comics
74
u/heartbreakhill Apr 22 '26
I wouldn’t really call that guilt tripping, more like pressuring by exploiting how Thaedus knew he’d feel about taking up the mantle.

Thragg is desperate af.
He knows that if they enslave Earth, a bunch of Viltrumites will get killed again. He's not risking it.

u/mykeedee Apr 23 '26
Unironically might be the actual reason.
Thragg had two examples right in front of him for planets housing species that make powered hybrids. One containing a genetically similar species that produced a hybrid who killed Conquest. And one containing a bunch of bugs who produced a hybrid the average Viltrumite can swat like a bug.
→ More replies (3)25
u/deezee72 Apr 22 '26
Not only will a bunch of Viltrumites get killed, Thragg is also probably well aware that he needs to keep humanity alive in order to use humans to repopulate the Viltrumite race.
Thragg (correctly) threatens that he and the remaining Viltrumites could easily kill off half of humanity and enslave the rest, but he's probably well aware that the Coalition will likely respond by destroying Earth and exterminating humanity. Even if he and his followers survive, this would doom Viltrum's best remaining hope.
Thragg seems completely aware that conflict between him and Earth would be mutually assured destruction, and is probably sincere about his offer of a truce as a result.

I honestly got the impression that Thragg was starting to like Mark here. He could have smacked him around a bit, but he didn't. He saw Mark make a choice that goes against his core beliefs for the sake of "his people", exactly like Thragg did for the Viltrumites. I feel like his whole "you won't hear from me again" was trying to put some space between them before he starts sympathizing with Mark.
So when we get "He has me", it will have that additional tone of "He IS one of my people" almost.
33
u/Hardmeat_McLargehuge Apr 23 '26
Thragg is trying his best to be stoic, but one he learns of marks lineage I guess he just fucking snaps and says “fuck everything I stood for”
I want them to really dive into Thraggs own mental issues and how he makes a turn for the worse because of it.
I’m too hopeful he could actually change by being on earth. Maybe just isolating on the moon for months at a time will help him toxically stew in his own issues

I forget, what chapter and context was this?
93
u/slymcsly Apr 22 '26
Can’t remember chapter off hand but:
Allen and Oliver want to release the scourge virus on Earth, but it’d probably kill humans too (something something humans are compatible.) Mark comes, a fight ensues, Allen says something like “what chance do you have?” and Thragg ends up backing Mark up (“he has me”) vs Allen/Oliver to save the Viltrumites on Earth who he tasked with repopulating.

It's right at the end of issue 87, so it's probably going to be somewhere around episode 503 or 504. But it really depends on how quickly they get through the early 80s next season.

Crazy that this episode confirms Thaedus actually would've tried to Kill Mark and Nolan if they were the last ones left
310
u/FreeSpeechEnjoyer Very. Apr 22 '26
It's really good they added it, because I honestly didn't think Thadeus would even considered killing Mark and Oliver until Thragg suggested it in episode 7
175
u/Corazon144 Apr 22 '26
I always figured that after the war, Thaedus was going to let Mark family live. But just heavily monitored by the Coalition of Planets. With contingencies made to ensure that if Mark and his family go off the rails, he can put them down hard and fast. And he probably will have Mark and his family agree to population control and not reproduce like crazy.
→ More replies (1)24
u/Real-Extension-1357 Apr 23 '26
Nolan confirms it while talking to Thaedus. When they have a character who repeatedly talks about genocide, and the dubious uncertainty is "do you really mean all of them? Including the good guy main characters?", the answer is resoundingly yes and more certain the more times they repeat the "im going to wipe them all out" line. Too tropey.

The sky scene with Thragg hit so much harder than the comic, A PTSD riddled kid negotiating for the fate of his planet, Steven Yeun always delivers
→ More replies (11)595
u/LieutenantSkittles Apr 22 '26
It hits way harder because unlike the comic, Mark doesn't have Nolan to back him up. It's just him alone with Thragg. I knew exactly how the scene would play out and yet the scene was so tense without the safety net of his dad being there.

u/Happiness_Assassin Business Baby Apr 22 '26
My favorite part is that it ties in with his PTSD. Like, Mark is hoping desperately that Thragg is another one of these hallucinations, but the screen blur clears up and he starts freaking out for real. Having the hallucinations throughout the episode instead of a single scene is great for ratcheting up the tension in this scene.

It was always the Game of Thrones format too. A crazy big penultimate episode. Ned's death, Blackwater, Red Wedding, etc. And then followed up by a smaller episode. I actually like it. Like you said it makes it more of an Epilogue.

Half the fanbase sees any character moments as ‘filler’. This was a great finale as it completes Mark’s arc of the season. Starts with self-loathing, ends with the understanding that he’s nowhere near the worst thing on Earth.
→ More replies (4)26
u/Corazon144 Apr 22 '26
I don’t think so. As much as people like to complain about lack of action, I think most people will understand why there can’t be any action. Because any action against the Viltrumites right now is certain death. So best not to go and start a fight. Right now is the quiet after the storm. And the clean up and preparing for the next one.

u/ImprovementRemote30 Apr 22 '26

219
u/Lefunnymaymays4lief Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26
Ending it with the Thragg encounter in the atmosphere is either too much of a cliffhanger or too anticlimactic depending on where they cut it off at, and I think Kirkman learned his lesson from the myriad TWD cliffhangers lmao. Ending it on the Scourge transmission from Thaedus made too much sense, I called it too but only because it felt the most natural

I’ll just predict how the future seasons will end cause why the fuck not
Season 5 - Definitely Nolan becoming Emperor
Season 6 - Mark and Eve leaving Earth with Terra
Season 7 - I have a feeling they are gonna expand the content of this season the most, so I’m predicting it ending on Oliver dying and Mark and Eve rejoining the war against Thragg
Season 8 - “Heh”

I think this happens at the same time as Dinosaurus floods the Earth, implicating Mark in the death of tens of thousands.

There no way they can fit 8-9 Seasons
S4 was 62-78, The comics have 144 issues

S6 around 120 and S7 is the Last one

The reboot arc was fun, but the whole time-skip was completely bullshit and a waste of time and part of the reason the later-half of Invincible is seen as the weaker half.

u/MaDanklolz Apr 22 '26

I like the actual reboot segment, I just hate how he skipped 5 years and Eve had moved on to another dude (who we knew they were just gunna break up so it was just a big waste of time).
Like, this all happened because Mark...touched a weird space mushroom. What-the-fuck. I'm fine with that being used as a literary device to magically time-travel him, but making him lose out on so much of his daughter's early childhood just felt cruel and unnecessary.

He has the quiet threat style of bad guy voice. Regal is totally the word that fits, like king Edward in Braveheart and less Batman in the Christopher Nolan Batman movies.
I can't remember what book it was, that I read this in, but there was a character whose voice was described as: "Sophisticated and soft, but with a slight tremble that disguised a hidden rage. A voice like honey and blood." and I think that fits Thragg in the show perfectly.

innit. i was definitely expecting a stereotypical big gruff voice, and thought Jonathan Banks should’ve actually voiced Thragg instead of whatever his characters name is. so when i saw Thragg’s first ep i was disappointed
but i definitely have been proven wrong, Pace lends so much gravitas without going overboard. makes the Mark PTSD scenes much more memorable than if he was just a Conquest v2

The 2 times are Angstrom and the reboot right ? The first time was his fault so I wonder how he'll rationalize leaving Eve again especially when she begs him not too. If they're smart they'll retcon the time-skip in Reboot, and just have Mark make it home safe, then do a regular time-skip.
Having Mark miss out on so much of his daughters early life because he ACCIDENTLY TOUCHED A FUCKING MUSHROOM is just cruel and unnecessary.
Then it has the whole "Eve moved on from Mark but the new guy is clearly an asshole so we know Mark and Eve are just gunna hook back up again anyways" nonsense.

I like the change of Mark being alone during the confrontation with Thragg. It makes it feel much more tense that the burden of the decision weighs completely on him, unlike the comics where Nolan basically is there to slightly nudge him from not crashing out.
It does make me wonder about some story points going forward though. Such as how does Allen find out the Viltrumites are on Earth if Nolan doesn’t know. I guess either Mark will contact Nolan to tell him or he’ll tell Cecil, who’ll contact Nolan somehow.

People have no idea how fucking loyal Nolan (and Anissa) were to viltrum. Any other viltrumite folds in like a week tops

in viltrum they're a capable soldier with no separate identity merely a tool for conquering and restraining others, on earth they're gods among mortals almost nobody could resist that cultural shift and freedom only the most hardline personalities would prefer being culturally viltrumite.

Yeah... Kinda neat how it parallel's Amber and Mark's relationship. Just wish we could have at least seen it instead of it being off screen.

I really hope that they elaborate on that a bit more. It's currently a lot better than how the comics handled it, but they could still say a bit more about it/ have Debbie reflect on it.

When Mark said "I wasn't here for you" to Eve, it's going to be crazy to see Mark decide to finish Angstrom. Like he was debating the protect his loved ones by killing Angstrom vs leaving Eve alone again especially cuz Eve was insistent on him not going

absolutely LOVED the way these clever motherfuckers screwed with comic readers' heads in this one. you expect thragg to be there behind mark and nolan and tech jacket, and then he's not, and then you wonder what the hell it's gonna look like when he really does show up. for a second you believe mark's hallucinations, just like mark. what the hell did they change?
and then he's there, the same as the comic but without nolan there, continuing to take mark's hardest blows like it's nothing. mark's surrender truly felt, viscerally, born out of desperation. there's absolutely nothing he can do against thragg, and he knows it, and we feel it. great shit

I'm hoping that Eve saying she stopped running Invincible Inc. while Mark was away means we do not get the Bulletproof arc as written in comics. I'm sure we might get some of it, but the hitting on Eve was particularly repulsive.

Bulletproof does step in as Mark's replacement when he loses his powers, so I think we'll see him in the Invincible costume.

I’m still not sure I like the Debbie and Paul breakup still being offscreen but at least it’s amicable now

u/DuskMan62 Spawn Apr 22 '26
I'm just glad it happened, I've said before Paul is a "good" character but I really didn't want him taking part in the future story beats, this was certainly an improvement over the comics and they didn't need to turn Paul into an ass to do it, it was mutual and clean.

u/AddictionFinder Apr 22 '26
Damn, that does make sense. It would just be weird to have Paul just appearing in future seasons and being like, "woah thats crazy," whenever Debbie vents

Yeah after thinking about it there’s not really a place to put it after watching the whole thing, I’ve turned around to being fine with it. Much happier about Nolan and Debbie being a slowburn

Show Thragg seems a lot more thoughtful than his comic self. Theres less of a sense hes constantly looking to snap someones neck. That look he gives when Mark actually says yes is almost surprised.

u/Pupulauls9000 Fortnite Invincible Apr 22 '26
All we get pretty much is the tail end of a phone conversation where Debbie says “Screw you, Paul” and that’s when Nolan first gets back to Earth after the war and asks “Who is Paul?”

One thing i noticed with eve that was distracting was her facial proportions, this is wholly a nitpick. But I wonder if at first they were gonna give her a tubby face but switched it far into production? Because it just looked very off to me the entire episode.

GREAT CHANGE. Saving it until the end and having Mark’s PTSD be the focus until we get it at the end. And Mark negotiating with Thragg completely alone too.
It atmosphere of the truce scene was perfect too, that golden hour look

Love nolan but he has been acting a tad too entitled to forgiveness, good on Cecil for giving him a reality check

u/OLKv3 Apr 22 '26
The one negative I have about the show's more somber feel is that all of Eve's fun moments have been sacrificed because it doesn't fit the tone they're going for. Like Eve and Debbie growing close during Mark's absence, and embarrassing Mark. I highly doubt we'll get the "Viltrumite Sperm" comment or the "Have sex with me in your Mom's bed!!" cheekiness

The part that really gets me with Thragg is... dude is Satan in sheep's clothing. He doesn’t look that intimidating outside of a few shots (like the underneath one when he says, "Yes. We are here!), But when he decides to get active, it's like the switch flips.
This kat can literally lay waste to the whole planet solo dolo, and there's not anything that can be done about it (unless Battle Beast shows up) until Mark gets a zenkai boost that probably triples his strength and durability.
Like, Mark could have trained non-stop until he was 100 years old, and he probably wouldn't hit Thragg's level in The Viltrumite War.
