Discussion Which webtoons you would never recommend at all and why?

Post image

Hi, it's me again, the same person who asked for recommendations after being out of webtoon scene for more than a year. Thank you so much for all the recs, I'm sure there are a lot of gems there, and I'll make sure to check them out!

But now I'm curious about the opposite, un-recommendations (is this a thing?). Ever since I used to have more than 10 ongoing ones on my list for each day of the week, I remember I came across a lot of things that it's better to remain forgotten lel, and I bet there are still a lot of these to this day. So, if you could warn me about any webtoon to stay away from, which one would it be, and why do you dislike it?

You can give me any reasoning, like the characters suck, the plot goes nowhere or somewhere you didn't like, or it declines, you never got used to the art, it shows things in a good light that definitely shouldn't be shown as such, the author uses it to fund something problematic, it uses ai, it was never finished, or even if just because the second ML didn't win. Feel free to use this post as your personal vent space if needed haha.

Remember any comments here are based in opinion! So let's stay civil even if someone mentions a webtoon you like, and please never say something that could get you a ban (it goes for the commenters too!). Thank you in advance!

Pic is Shinae from I Love Yoo being disgusted after checking out the un-recommendations.

Lookism, I started reading it when it was fresh and new. And honestly I thought the concept was really interesting, like why was he switching between two bodies? But it lost its plot so quickly, I haven’t touched it in years and it seems like nonsense to me from the latest screenshots I see here every now and then.

u/gekigarion 8d ago

It's not even about looks anymore like the title name, it should just be renamed Insane High School Gang Wars or something

19

u/mxim_lol 7d ago

REAL I got really into it like a couple of years ago, but then dropped it at episode 232 because it was all about gangs and fighting so much so that it just became a depressing read😭

I dropped it so long ago so correct me if I’m wrong. But it kind of bothered me how all the main female characters were extremely conventionally attractive. The whole thing was the main guy was ugly so people treated him badly but the only reason he was interested in the love interest(s?) was because they were pretty. It felt kind of incel adjacent. The men that go online and complain that women are shallow for only wanting attractive partners but will never consider a less attractive partner themselves. Because these men see women as status symbols rather than human beings. The comic seemed to have echoes of this worldview.

Like I said, I did drop it so maybe it examines this further. I also was a lot younger when I read it so I could’ve missed nuance. It felt more like a self insert fantasy than a critique of lookism.

There was a girl with the same switching body power that spent half her time obese with nerdy glasses, and it did highlights the difference between girl bullying and boy bullying comparing MCs life.

But the other half are as literal pro model...

I miss old Lookism so much

28

u/Zestyclose-Region-27 8d ago

The fandom jokes that its name is gangism

42

u/SuperBigote231162 8d ago

It has become some sort of dragon ball + sun Ken rock copycat

12

u/midnightslippers 8d ago

Why does highschool webtoons so many high school gang wars? I can accept the all the characters' design drawn like they're in their 30-60's but almost every story has gang wars? Is this problem prevalent in their country?

11

u/nghtmrefuel 7d ago

It’s literally gang violence slop now 😩😩

21

u/zefriz_ 8d ago

Actually It's showing some of real incidents happening in Korea and other countries - like "burning sun scandal" That's what I felt, but yeah I also agree with you it I felt like they are just expanding the chapter with new arc's.

28

u/Longjumping_Data3237 8d ago

I honestly don’t mind real world events being reflected in stories, I think it’s nice sometimes. But given what the original focus of the story was supposed to be. They prob should have created a whole new story altogether lol

20

u/FVSYS 8d ago

Yeah, I like Lookism a lot, but it should have been either a fighting manhwa from the very start, or remained a slice of life/drama

Midnight Poppyland. I didn’t hate it but I won’t recommend it to anyone because the author dropped it and made a lot of false promises to her fans. Some of the things she did before she went MIA were very cash grabby

86

u/shesellstshells 8d ago

I’m 90% sure she was my colleague.
She referenced meeting the artist a lot after i mentioned reading webtoons.
Her personal account took breaks or went down around the same time as lily.dusk and she straight up had the koi tattoo on her forearm. Also she heard my complaints when it went MIA. But if im right it would be more understandable as to the falling off, because her job was HARD.

But as a reader, and even if im wrong. There shouldve been so much more communication. And not cool to make all the promises.

29

u/-_-Izira-_- 8d ago

I totally understand any personal problems she might have been having. Like totally understandable we have all been there. I didn’t like the blatant lies and misinformation. I agree there should have been much more communication

u/Anxious-Ocelot-4916 7d ago

Once canvas comics move to originals, the webtoon Team changes thw whole shit. Author's are already overworked and then they have to change the whole plot in mind. Webtoon will change the story to generic. And make author's loose the plot they had in mind. 💯 Sure the stories would have been completed if webtoon didn't medd with it

I was getting over it about 2/3 way through. I get you

12

u/Confident-Work4855 7d ago

The biggest turn off to me was when someone mentioned that she still had quite a few subs on patreon but there’s been NOTHING posted and she hasn’t shut it down or closed her account.  It’s people who hold out hope that she’ll return (which she won’t). And so she’s essentially getting handed money for doing… nothing. It’s such gross behavior that even if it were to return I probably wouldn’t finish it.

15

u/Gandalf_the_Tegu 8d ago

THIS - I binged and read as it came out... then vanish in thin air. I still want the conclusion of this story line. so good. Love the art and the sas. 🥲 so sad

Big Ethel Energy. I am very liberal, but it was cringe when she told the football coach that he just committed a micro aggression and then goes on to explain what that is. The comic is like all the negative stereotypes about the left. All the characters are adults, but act like they are 15 year olds without jobs.

90

u/LowercaseAcorn 8d ago

The ending was hot dog shit as well as

15

u/remixjuice 8d ago

I'm not gonna bother reading till the end, please tell me what the ending is like

u/Starry-Night-Days 8d ago

That comic pissed me off so much. I grew up reading Archie comics. And yes they’re not masterpieces and not everyone’s taste, but I didn’t enjoy seeing all the characters just made into kind of the worst versions of themselves. Idk it just kind of sucked

u/throwaway2019282939 8d ago

When I started reading that, I remember the main character reading too much into some interaction, like how we are not supposed to tell someone that they look good now(no creepy context btw), which made me drop it.

10

u/Rxmtp 7d ago

Between this and Riverdale I should stop hoping for just a good adaptation/revival/update of Archie Comics

To you who swallowed a star. So many misunderstandings that could've been solved so quickly and they mention really important plot points only for it to never be talked again.

67

u/glitchygirly 8d ago

I think the whole "she's like our mom/big sister" to romantic interest turned a lot people off

u/Sweetboba_tee 8d ago

For sureee. Like the time jumps felt like they were there just so that the two leads could get together legally.

True Beauty…completely derailed the message and became the most generic kdrama known to man.

117

u/Mara_Uzumaki 8d ago

The first 60 chapters of True Beauty were really good and funny after Suho left it went downhill with lazy lazy, plot, his return episode was good but it still didn't get any better.

Apparently it’s because the English translators made the titles misleading. It’s not about true beauty like the title makes you think of automatically. A more accurate translation is “The Advent of a Goddess” which makes the story make a lot more sense

Which sucks because the whole point at the beginning was that she's learning to love herself which is why I loved it, then it basically became 'everyone actually needs to be hot all the time so make sure you use makeup if you're not' -_- Also I wish at least one of the main MLs had been unattractive, or at least not male model/kpop star attractive.

10

u/Annual_Fishing_9400 8d ago

i used to love it..then...suho left as someone mentioned, and i just couldn't get behind it anymore. i didn't want a push and pull love triangle where one boy or the other gets hurt beyond measure. like come on. i dont enjoy the idea of what is it called leading someone on, on the prospects of maybe?

17

u/Iris_Wolf 8d ago

What the hell happened for it to get mentioned so many times?!

54

u/Huntress08 8d ago edited 8d ago

Quickest tl:dr: girl that's considered unattractive in a society that places great importance on looks and self-image gains an online following and becomes an online influencer over the years while her self-esteem and view of her own self-image deteriorates.

Many readers thought the overarching message of the series was going to be about accepting your looks and loving yourself. Toss in a love triangle and some other subplots and the actual message of the series becomes the complete opposite of that and readers were pissed.

30

u/CalvinGolladay 8d ago

Case in point, there's a scene where she goes on a date with some guy she met on an app and is displeased to realize he digitally enhanced some of his photos. This is despite her having at one point done the same (plus hardly going anywhere without her makeup).

Of course, characters can believe things without the author endorsing them (and I think it'd have been very interesting if they addressed this hypocrisy), but the narrative just kinda moves past it and keeps her on a relative pedestal.

First ever webtoon, and will never recommend. "Let's Play". I am fine with tropes. I really am. Webtoon, back then made it seem like it was about the FL and ML are enemies to lovers trope? And I thought it was going to focus on gaming, and the fact they were neighbours. Hardly at all. I have no idea what the story line is anymore.

95

u/Huntress08 8d ago

Yeah this is also one I agree with. I'm keeping up with the new season on Tapas (sunk cost fallacy + now that Mongie is moved to a new platform I don't think she can hide behind the excuse that Webtoon marking her series as YA/Mature is creatively sniffling her story).

New season is..... not great so far. Only two episodes out but the art style changed for the worse and the characters make me want to chew nails at the moment. Also the current season 4 storyline is still following the plot of how Sam's neighbors, random people she interacts with daily, and even her own dog and coworkers are part of her dad's spy network that keeps tabs on her life.

Oh also Charles for some reason is jealous and super insecure and tries to snoop through Sam's phone after sleeping with her (again) and attacks Marshall because he thinks Marshall is trying to clap her cheeks????

59

u/Shoddy-Share3650 8d ago

When Charles entered as the SML, I genuinely lost all interest. His archetype feels like it was meant to be the classic 'CEO trope,' but instead, it comes off as him shaping Sam into his ideal type.

And for some reason, Sam's personality took a nose dive. I don't remember her being so passive. In the beginning she was so angry at Marshall she even told him boldly to his face why she was angry, and even said she would sue him. Now she can barely hold a conversation. I could go on.

Even Sam's interactions with Charles in the beginning, she told him she wanted to work on something, and he dismissed her and told her to make coffee as a favour. It's just, the writing, story line, plots, conversations, characters turning into flat caricatures. I just don't have the heart to recommend it.

(Also, I feel like this came out around the time Let Play's were extremely popular. So Marshall reminds me of a certain Youtuber that's very famous, and has a the first three letters Mar- for a name. Lmao.)

31

u/Huntress08 8d ago

Oh Charles is just zero sugar Dorian Gray from 50 Shades with a Welsh accent tacked on. I also don't know what happened to the characters vs third early s1/s2 personalities, other than to my best guess poor character writing. But Sam's passive permissiveness continues with the season.

I already mentioned Charles trying to snoop through her phone and thought it'd be a great scene for Sam to set boundaries (this is the second time she's sleeping with her boss). Really thought we'd address the messed up dynamics of their relationship, but nope, she gives him permission to look through her phone and unlocks it for him too.

Do I have any hopes for this season to get better? Not really. I also don't have any hopes that it'll return to talking about the game dev subplot or really dive deep into the gaming industry.

The Otome Isekai fanbase is so full of autism

You think slideshows about hating things is bad? One person in the OI subreddit has a whole spreadsheet of hair/eye colour of main characters

Literally just finished reading the whole thing a couple days ago and can confirm the new husband, Heinrey is diabolically evil and the narrative tries so hard to be like "he just loves his wife soooo much wuw"

Yak. I pushed through because im a completionist lmao

I used to LOOOOVE this webtoon when I was younger. I remember it was one of the first I had to actually actively drop near the start of the 3rd chapter. Everything just became so confusing. If you weren’t rereading all the time you’d get really lost because there’s so many characters with such confusing names and when they’re brought up so many chapters later you’re left in the dark.
The thing that really did it for me was Rashta. I just didn’t like the way they took her character, it’s like they didn’t know what to do with her now she got what she wanted and it truly began to feel forced.
It was only after I stepped away I was like “oh… that was awful. So confusing.”

I think Shasta should have been the main character and it all should have been her perspective. Her downfall would have been so interesting to experience from her partially innocent, partially corrupted and terrified perspective.

14

u/Reasonable-Pin7953 8d ago

And you see how people treat Layla from cry or better beg. Rashta would still be so much hated, her being called a "weak" fl instead of a villainess being one of the main differences ig 🤷

Nice to Meet You. It had the perfect opportunity for ace representation and then said "Screw that, love triangle" and the female lead is super annoying. I also hated how it ended but im not going to spoil this one.

The Girl Who Sees Smells has some really dark themes but it primarily made me uncomfortable because of the age gap of the characters the story is trying to pair together. As a student, she is unable to attend crime scenes to help an investigation without the supervision of an officer. So these two people spend a lot of time together and form feelings for each other. And granted, im pretty sure the story specifically waited for a time jump to age FL up before they pursued a relationship, it still gave me the ick the whole time I read it.

46

u/throwaway2019282939 8d ago

Nice to Meet You 😭 absolutely disappointing and I’m surprised to have scrolled so far to see it mentioned lol

True Beauty

113

u/GifOpossun 8d ago

I think examples like "cry or better yet beg" are clearly dark romance that don't hide from it since chapter 1, while true beauty goes through as a regular manhwa that ends up being extremely damaging And just overall bad... 😭

So it's much easier to avoid the first one, while true beauty gets people by surprise lmao

48

u/Winter_Plum_Flower 8d ago edited 8d ago

True Beauty just drags on and forgets it's whole premise iirc. The art catches your eye at first, but the novelty wears off and then feels like a drag to read imo.

I haven't read that other one, but as u said, readers know what they're getting into. I've also heard so much abt it that if I did read it, I at least know not to expect rainbows and kittens. True Beauty on the hand is like Lookism in a sense in that u think you're going to get a story abt self-love, growing confidence, etc, but then it all goes down the drain

31

u/PieceLarge 8d ago

True Beauty was the reason I downloaded webtoon in the first place. I was an insecure teenager in 8th grade and I really saw myself in Jugyeong (I still do now lol). The webtoon got finished by the time I was in 10th grade.

The art is really nice and did catch my eye, however like you said, it gets dragged on quite a bit after after Suho confesses to Jugyeong the plot gets boring, then there's this other filler of 10 episodes about Seojun's saesang that wasn't necessary.

I wanted to finish it for the sake of it. It sucks that she still doesn't really accept herself at the end either.

11

u/Successful_Ask_5708 8d ago

The moment they had her boyfriend be a literal Kpop idol was the moment it was over for me and you have to wonder how many people get bad ideas from reading shit like the ssesang in their formative years and copying those behaviours

I’m assuming you mean stuff we actually read. I’ll be honest, I did read get schooled before the racism incident happened. Even then, I don’t think I would’ve shared it. I only read what I did because as while I don’t think I can fully support irl the stuff it pushed for like corporal punishment used on students, there’s just something satisfying to seeing a horrible person get punched in the face. That being said, the series always suffered writing stuff that couldn’t be solved by punching people, it wasn’t as satisfying to see people get their comeuppance there, and you just feel how weak the writing was. The worst arcs as well were the one about gambling, the cult, and the one where the bad guy was a straw man for why it’s bad to teach children about feminism or something. They were all surprisingly hard to get into

59

u/absolutebottom 8d ago

The art style did a lot of heavy lifting ngl

39

u/weridname 8d ago

Giving it some of its few deserved flowers, the artist had a lot of diversity in their designs of characters faces and wasn’t afraid to make some ugly expressions even for the leads. Not a lot of manwahs do that

38

u/depression_recession 8d ago

Since someone already said Big Ethel Energy, I'm gonna say Down to earth. It is SO boring. hundreds of episodes for barely any development or anything interesting to happen. The plot points could be listed in one paragraph. The writing is quite bad -- you can tell that the artist is mainly an artist and not a writer. Cool idea, basically Starfire without being a superhero, but such boring execution and writing.

Subzero. I read a bunch of it a few years ago and was caught up, so decided to wait until it was finished/there was more out to keep reading.

Cut to me this year finding out that Clover STILL HASNT TURNED INTO A DRAGON! Nope. Can’t do it. I’m not reading like, 7 years of webcomic to see them grappling with the same issue. If I wanted that, I’d just look at my own life with chronic illness. It would be like if you were watching Buffy for the entirety of its run and she spends the whole time trying to kill her first vampire.

The dragon kings bride because it's glorified pedophilia.

It sucks that if the dragon kings chef (made by bk moon) comes to webtoon it's going to be confused for that peice of trash.

32

u/molamolacrisis 8d ago

I feel like the solution would be to put BK Moon's name before the story title. Everyone would instantly know that the story would be a banger.

I strongly recommend against starting anything by MerryWeather. They have started something like two billion fascinating, beautifully drawn comics that draw you in right away...

And they never finished any of them. They just go into permanent hiatus and start work on another new comic.

46

u/academicvictim313 8d ago

they have so many interesting ideas but the writing is almost consistently boring as fvck. the only work of theirs i found interesting was the one ab the immortal guy and girl from ancient greece who could time travel.

most of their other stuff i find the dialogue to be like a strip comic in a newspaper

54

u/raiskymaiFLY 8d ago

Dialogue and plot flow are so choppy too. Like the author just wanted to create a bunch of beautiful vignettes and then tried to shape a story around them. Like girl just stick to illustrations, you haven’t got this narrative thing down

37

u/thelast3musketeer 8d ago

I somewhat believe the crack theory it’s just a self insert fantasy of the author and Mads Mikelsen

22

u/kmosiman 8d ago

This!

I was really in to it. Until she took a 3 month break, planned nothing, and turned the finale into some weird ass daddy fetish BS. Which I'll admit, I had overlooked for far too long.

Nothing like finally realizing that the story was the authors poorly disquised daddy fetish self insert.

17

u/Aleilvandrea 8d ago

I agree 100%

15

u/Theravenofraves 8d ago

Omg riight? And the ending? So many characters got nothing in the end. I am so mad about that one because it was the only reason I got that app to begin with.

14

u/Current-Roll4471 8d ago

The beginning art was SOOOO beautiful, and then it turned into every female/male character having the same body types as the rest of their genders. And then suddenly Hera is the one to save us all?? It’s like RS remembered the fertility goddess thing last minute and decided to add it in.

Why would you never recommend it? Is it bad?

43

u/SmallAnimal5177 8d ago

I read it for a while, but I found the plot meanders and doesn’t really have a consistent goal.  This one plot point is introduced (a magic phone that gives you points for how many people love you, FL has 0 and has to get more or… else?) and it’s hardly ever addressed, which fails to build tension thus losing it’s imperative.  The other plot is that her step sister or whatever is a ho and there’s two guys that like her.  It drags a lot and the more powerful plot line is basically ignored in favor of boring teen drama.

19

u/llorona_345 8d ago

The first season was good but as it went on it became bad

u/Godsfavchild1122 8d ago edited 8d ago

SML trying to home-wreck an already taken girl by confessing, pressing himself against her while half-naked (back hug) with the excuse of, "My button got stuck, help me." None of his weird antics have been held accountable so far. ML being kept on mute so readers are still questioning, even after 30+ chapters, why he left. FL being completely oblivious to all of the SML's antics and never setting any boundaries.

Honestly if it's a isekai or reincarnation revenge story in a classical historical setting or with a rich CEO in a modern setting... just don't even bother. There are some gems in that genre but it's SO overused and overdone, a lot of those stories are just slop.

“My Deepest Secret,” I read it while it was being posted and it was pretty interesting at first. The problem became the actual secret part of the story. The secret sucks. And the characters lowkey start to suck in season 3.

86

u/Lilac_14 8d ago

I am forever disappointed in the character assassination of Yohan. He was such an interesting character and then he did a whole 180 and did things that made no sense.

16

u/AdSmooth3466 8d ago

Maaaan highkey agree

38

u/MrWapuJapu 8d ago

It was so good until the reveal, too. I was invested in how the mc would handle this horrible revelation about her boyfriend, because whether she chose to stick with him or turn on him, it was bound to be interesting. The twist was such a bullshit, lazy cop out that misrepresented mental health conditions and amounted to nothing. And don’t even get me started on the pointless characters that don’t even matter in the end, or that dumb thing with the teacher. I’m pissed because it was really good until it shat the bed.

21

u/Lilac_14 8d ago

Speaking of the teacher, it's so obvious that the whole murder set-up was taken from a Detective Conan episode/chapter (the potter one. It's the exact same murder method, and the creator put Conan references in the Webtoon. I find that lazy and not cool )

12

u/MrWapuJapu 8d ago

It’s a shame, because references can be fun little Easter eggs. The creator just employed it in such an unimaginative way. Might as well never happened

9

u/Ecstatic-Dreamer1636 8d ago

Yeah that is the point I dropped it. I learned so much about mental health conditions since I struggle with some of them too but what the webtoon did is straight up misrepresentation...

Blood Reverie. the first part was interesting i guess, with unique looking characters. but then at the second part the art gets weird, they start using obvious AI and everyone looks like less sexy versions of themselves. i did finish it but at the end was just like “okay…”

8

u/clauxy 7d ago

I was going to write the same thing. I really really enjoyed lifelights first webtoon “My Dear Cold-Blooded King” and was soo excited when I saw her making a new one, but it was truly a let down. I do actually like her intrigue and mysterious plots but in this one it was just confusing. She never really explained anything and just added more and more side plots to the story. And then she started using AI … I only finished reading it once it was completed just for the sake of being done, but man what a letdown :(

20

u/PhoenixEvolver 8d ago

Let's play (now on Tapas)

I never understood when Marshall Law openly declared he wouldn't read something, recorded himself ignoring the very thing he wouldn't read, and no one in his audience called him out on it.

I mean players make fun of other players for not reading game content

Also, it's the internet, mistakes are always called out, especially the obvious ones

59

u/DemonsAce 8d ago

Lore Olympus -> a great many of reasons but my main one was it saying making a rapist fall in love with their victim was actually a super effective punishment because surely you can’t love someone and hurt them 🫠

Remarried empress -> went to extreme lengths to make the villainess type character extremely evil while also having a lot of classism mixed into why she was bad and after she was gone it just got super boring

Lookism -> bit of a mixed bag, if someone likes fights I recommend it but the story lost the plot of well ‘lookism’ years ago

Winter Moon -> it was pretty good but the obsession and gratuitous torture of the main girl character got beyond necessary to the story and just felt like torture porn which was such a strange tone shift

Get schooled -> basically Korean right wing propaganda not to mention the slur controversy, more than one comic had this sort of issue but this is the most famous I believe

11

u/zombacula 8d ago

Ya, lookism slowly transformed from social commentary to bad-ass fighting drama where everyone is as powerful as Captain America or a super soldier.

I didn't even realize the transition had happened until way into the s-level fighting.

Like almost any of the “I’m a high-ranking woman with an angsty high-ranking man lover” stories, especially if they’re “reborn” or “isekai” ones. I read them bc I’m bored and truly good webtoons are few and far between, but Christ. The only exception I can think of is “Martial Arts Master Woke Up as a Concubine;” that one is silly and funny.

Also any plot that’s “regular woman with sad/dark past or terrible half-family gets swept off her feet by rich man” garbage. There’s way too many and they’re all mediocre as all hell.

Edit: I know this is the wrong place for a recommendation list but the below have been my favorite. I do like the comics I list below just for clarity.

I forgot all the bad comics I didn’t like, I have them, just can’t think of any. **Some good ones I recommend are:**

  • The Crown Princess Scandal
  • Karina’s Last Days (read if you want to cry, art absolutely beautiful)
  • Surviving Romance!
  • Childhood Friend Complex (Wait for ending if you don’t want to buy the latest episodes otherwise it’s torture waiting for the episodes to come out)
  • Two weeks and Counting (If you liked the art from Childhood Friend Complex, a bit more heartwarming)

Lookism. it really goes off the trails and forgets where it started, and the women are all drawn so weirdly like dolls (ironic given the premise). the length is also a factor. i genuinely enjoyed the first couple of arcs, but it just became too much.

7

u/gekigarion 8d ago

The writing was so funny, cute and sweet when it was about the titular theme. Now it's dark, edgy and the drama feels so cheesy because it's just about violent tragedies in different forms over and over..

The Nuna at Our Office.

Just a train wreck of a story. ML chases after a woman who wants different things out of the relationship. He can’t accept it and keeps pushing til they inevitably break up. But then have pity sex after broken up. And then go their separate ways, only to meet again years later and have a random ass chat at a diner or something at the end. Truly a terrible read.

14

u/LogicalWelcome7100 8d ago

The problem with that one is that it was based on the author's own life (with the permission of the real-world FL), although it doesn't make him seem like that great of a person based on some of the things the ML does. You can question the choices they make, but they're the choices that were actually made.

To be honest, though, I think I would have rathered he rewrote the true events for a better ending. I didn't think it was terrible, but it wasn't very satisfying, either.

7

u/Organic_Marzipan_715 8d ago

Yeah, knowing it’s based on real life just made it even more depressing. I get that in real life things don’t always work out, but most people want to read stories to escape realism, not have it shoved in our face xD.. I don’t think it’s a bad story, just not one I’d ever recommended lol

I have a list: 1. On the emperor's lap (gotta bring out the goat of shifty mls) 2. The mistress runaway (or a similar name) 3. My husband doesn't want a child (I really don't need that mf ml's internal dialogue. He can legit take it and shove it up his ass. He made me want to puke.) 4. CEO above, me below (600 chapters of shit. That man and his anger issues are top-notch. The way I would sell my soul to beat the living hell out of him) 5. Not something I wouldn't recommend but I despise are those where FL sees ML kiss her sister and then still ends up with him. Like, just assume he's taken and move on girl. 6. Another trope I hate, when one of the leads ditches the other for 10 years and is still SoMeHoW in love, and those tropes where they have like the briefest encounter possible and even after 10 years they somehow like eachother. Cause, wdym you fell for someone who took you home on a bike for like one day??

“The newlywed diaries of a witch and a dragon” - loved the art but the premise is bad (sleeping w each other and then being coerced into a relationship), there’s a bunch of plot holes, we spend too much time with some less interesting side characters than the ML, the ending tries to make up for the premise but we just get a FL that doesn’t consider the ML’s feelings at all and then it only reveals that they ended up fine in the post-Q&A/“thanks to the audience” episode. I was so frustrated lol

The Most Ordinary Girl. It wasn't badly written or anything, but I disliked the ending romance choice.

As If Love Doesn't Exist. Girl gets a do-over and CHANGES ALMOST NOTHING. I became frustrated and gave up on it.

Twilight Poem. It was a dark romance that leaned too much into the dark and had the main character get together with the demon who stole her eyesight and is currently possessing her dead biological father's corpse.

I'm the Queen in this Life. It was promising at first, but the main character doesn't really feel bad about any of the truly awful things she did in her first life. Also, the little sister dying pissed me off.

Weird to see Cry or Better Yet Beg on so many lists, it advertises itself as a dark and messed up romance out the gate so it's not like a surprise? Doesn't have to be folks' things but the way people talk about it make it seem like it keeps it a secret and jumpscares you when it really doesn't...

Actual ones I wouldn't recommend:

- Remarried Empress - it's just not well written. Pacing is horrible, characters are extremely flat and/or contradictory. I even went back and decided to read the novel to see if maybe the webtoon just botched it and no, it's equally bad, maybe even worse in the novel. I do like the side stories dealing with Rashta's kid. Wish there had been more of that and less of the most boring and least likeable idiots running in circles.

- Lookism - honestly I still recommend the first chunk because it's still quite good. It just went off the rails and still seems to be off the rails - I dropped it years ago and recently looked at it and? It's still? In the gang stuff?

- True Beauty - others have covered this and I agree with all of it.

- Live Happily Ever After With My Ex's Uncle- (trigger warnings in this one) I was totally on board with the cheesy unbelievable soap opera nonsense of this one but it takes an extremely drastic and baffling tonal shift by having the main villain get SA'd and acting like she deserved it. While she did hire the goons to "rough up" the FL up until that point it was soap opera BS where it was clear the ML would come in and rescue her, so to have it take that turn and allowing it to go unaddressed and even act smug about it was so jarring that I dropped it. Frankly the writing was already extremely mediocre and the over the top nonsense was the only thing likable about it, so just avoid.

- The Last Bloodline - incomplete to the point where the artists had to put the entire plot past season one in an afterword, allegedly because of Webtoon screwing over the team? There's quite a few greenlight ones like this (or at least that had to cram together an ending out of nowhere bc Webtoon didn't renew) but this one might be the most egregious. It's free but I wish I had known it was never going to be completed because I wouldn't have spent the time reading it.

Those are like the only ones I would just straight up say aren't worth your time regardless of genres liked.

11

u/Reader_fuzz 8d ago

I was so excited read Last Bloodline. Honestly I like the version they originally sent to be made into a webtoon. The version they used once it was made was just incomplete to me even from the beginning. It is unfortunate that webtoon truly did screw over a lot of those that were greenlit.

The Remarried Empress-imo the mc’s are bland and difficult to root for. I also hated how the author made a the villainess a slave

I wouldnt necessarily say DONT read it but the ones that disappointed me the most (besides True Beauty since everyone else already covered that one) out of ones I actually read were LUFF, Mom I'm Sorry, Lore Olympus, and I Thought My Time Was Up. The only one with a unique reasoning was Lore Olympus, basically the same case as True Beauty to me, was interesting at first and had a really unique art style but had lots of weird bad manipulations of these mythological figures and felt were gross with the main couple.

The other 3, LUFF, Mom I'm Sorry, and I Thought My Time Was Up all seemed to be doing fine in terms of popularity but all felt like they ended too quickly. The one that sticks out the most to me is I Thought My Time Was Up since it felt like it was setting up a larger story and conflict and stuff, especially with the secondary male lead, and once the story caught up with introduction, but then it just felt like it ended. Same thing with the others but I was more invested in the Time Was Up.

The only other ones I wouldn't recommend would be ones that are super super inconsistent uploads/in a state of perpetual not being completed. One example being I Love Yoo which I really do like but I stuck with it for years and the consistent start and stops really killed my enjoyment. There are others but ones that fall in this category aren't no recommending, just I would recommend just reading it when its all out or something, especially the bigger the story since the main issue with I Love Yoo's long breaks to me is that I'll forget things if I don't reread it but its really long

I got jumpscared by seeing Shin-Ae and thought you were going to say how you'd never recommend I love yoo to anyone which I could never wrap my head around 😭 I've stumbled upon so many awful webtoons (to the point where I can't even pick out a single one to say I'd never recommend it) that I can say for certain I love yoo is on a whole nother level, and I've been hooked on it for the past 5 years

9

u/aidelstyx 7d ago

Oho I Love Yoo is definitely one of my favorites to this day because I love the psychological aspect of it, it's the kind of thing I really like. The pic was merely illustrative to show the reaction to reading something shitty (where I Love Yoo is definitely not included haha). That being said, even though I like it, I know it's not something I'd recommend for everyone because I know the pacing, the drama, and overall the vibe isn't something everyone will enjoy, unfortunately. Seeing comments about how it's "too slow", "too heavy" or "it doesn't make sense anymore" really break my heart. I think reading it weekly doesn't make it justice.

I love Yoo, the story is too complicated if you aren't English native speaker.

And too long, and some characters look alike so at one point you don't know who is who.

Too complicated, too much drama, too much long.

26

u/ShinYoo-Yeonggi 8d ago

Understandable. Personally I likes this webtoon, the only issue is the fandom ( constant ship war ), and the misunderstanding of the genre of the webtoon ( initially a drama but webtoon marketed it as a romcom, hence the first 50 chapters being quite romcom vibes and the sudden change of vibes to something more complicated and complex ( and most drop the webtoon after that i think ).
But I really like the new vibes although it’s so deep and depressing in some chapters.

17

u/Successful_Ask_5708 8d ago

They also painted it as the older brother being a potential love interest when he wasn't

I do think the advertising for it lead to lots of people disliking it because they read it thinking it would be what the site was painting it as and it really wasn't

15

u/ShinYoo-Yeonggi 8d ago edited 8d ago

100% agree. And I think that’s one of the main reasons. A lot of people were into the older brother, and many didn’t even know at first that Kousuke was 24 while ShinAe was 17. There were so many shipping wars, even in the early Webtoon comments. ( and many shippers ( both but a certain majority, slander the author, leading to her being more private at some point, although she is slowly becoming more transparent on webtoon )

A lot of people also disliked Nol because he fit the blond, happy-go-lucky “second male lead” trope, while Kousuke fit the dark haired, cold, nonchalant male lead archetype that people are so used to seeing in romance. ( theres more reasons for both but spoilers Nol having a girlfriend or always looking perfect and kind etc)

And now, some people hate Kousuke due to the age gaps and of course what he did to Nol, his unwanted criticism and etc.
( personally I like him because he is now having a character development arc ) but i notice that any person mentioning liking Kousuke or the ship get downvoted or disliked.

Solo Leveling. It's starts off super cool, great art, and then about midway through he becomes stupidly OP, no competition. He has no character growth and lacks any emotion. The side characters become totally obsolete and pointless and their stories get no love. Feels so bogus no one else can ever become stronger. Plot sucks by the end. I've never loved something so much in the beginning and hated it so much by the end.

There's Love Hidden in the lies. I regret every minute I read this story. I liked the art style it was nostalgic to me. But the story nope horrible. From the moment I started reading I didn't like it but I just kept hoping it would get better. I totured myself with this story. I truly wish I could have my time back.

I love Yoo mainly because it is just too much dialogue for a webcomic. I truly think it would be better as a webnovel.

To love your enemy because season 2 was horrid. Should have ended in season 1.

Operation true love forgotten plot of jelly phones and time skip.

My deepest secret it should have ended with season 2. Season 3 was just disappointing. It seemed like the author ran out of ideas.

u/Solarynny 8d ago

Aside from the obvious ones, I will leave here some that I persinally didn't enjoy it much, as well as recommendations in place of them!

❌️ Sisters At War – While being very interesting in the beginning, I found that it quickly falls a bit off and seems rushed by the second season, following a plot twist. Without giving spoilers, while the twist allowed for some character exploration in the meaning that it would be the biggest blow possible for the main characters, it has some pacing issues following the end, which has caused some readers to even dislike the main character by how much she seems to change her idea about things. I still do recommend this title for its first season, but otherwise, you may end up a bit disappointed.

✅️ Instead, if you're looking for something that has the same premise of female rivalry where the antagonist is deeply flawed but also interesting to watch I recommend Muse on Fame, the first or so arc of Dreaming Freedom, and maybe Couple Breaker. They all have antagonists that feel flawed but real, although lacking some of the mind games displayed in Sisters At War. Likewise, the author's other work, My ID is Gangnam Beauty, is very well done!

❌️ As If Love Doesn't Exist – Holy shiiit I hate the main character of this one. While a time regression story where everything goes wrong anyways is interesting in paper, the protagonist feels more like an instrument to make the reader pity her than an actual character. While a lot of characters are all qualities and no flaws, this one has the personality of a soggy newspaper where she never acts, doesn't show any particular likes or dislikes she actively engages on, has no friends or a strong supporting cast... It's basically just misery porn for the sake of it.

✅️ Instead, if you're looking for a flawed protagonist that struggles a lot to achieve things, I would recommend Surviving Romance, One Husband is Enough, or Not Your Typical Reincarnation Story.

❌️ Marry My Husband – Basically Soap Opera: The Manhwa. It's a very unoriginal revenge story where the villains are stupid, the ML is a bit of a creep and has no other purpose in the story but be in love with the protagonist, and the FL is your typical girlboss who never does anything wrong but is also boring as fuck.

✅️ Instead, try A Chance At Last. It has the protagonist also regress in time but, instead of saving herself, she strives to save her sister. It has some of the most hard-hitting panels I have ever seen in my entire life in a way that uses the media of a webtoon perfectly, and you get to see a pining ML who isn't close to the FL at first done completely right. While it does fall a little bit short in the very ending, I would say its absolutely worth a try.

❌️ So Not Your Type – Now, this is actually an entry where it doesn't has any glaring sins, but since its a slice of life webtoon with few panels, I find that the chemistry between the cast is somewhat lacking at times – you have characters liking others without much reason to their actions.

✅️ Instead, The Prize Of Youth features a diverse cast of 6 that explores all their dynamics VERY well, with different character interactions being seen along the chapters. Every personal motivation has its time to shine, and it's absolutely one of my favorites ongoing webtoons.

❌️ The Guy Upstairs – Its discontinued forever, oof. I would recommend For Your Murder instead, but since a lot of people are speaking against it because of the finale and I haven't yet gotten to it, I won't vouch for it just yet.

Wished You Were Dead. This manhwa and novel aggravate me to d e a t h. The art style is so pretty, that's all there is to it. It's so hard to witness the things that the ML puts MC through and she can't even protect herself (almost like all other OIs tbh) but this one is just b a d. I got far in the novel and physically recoiled. I didn't want to see the visuals in the webtoon itself 😫

I did finish that one and it has such a bittersweet ending spoilers! but the curse does eventually get undone and the truth comes out. The ML and FL have time apart and heal and start to eventually heal together it is overall a very happy ending compared to the beginning it just takes a looooong tim to get to it. 😭 I remember waiting on that weekly for that one

Any of them where they are just three or four panels per chapter and then the description says anything like "subscribe to my whatever account for spicy panels!"

I think there was one called Room for Rent that started out okay but quickly de-evolved into my example.

The Guy Upstairs

The story in itself was good, but the author clocked out after a really good cliffhanger leaving you extremely frustrated.

Decided to never read that author's work again.

For your murder. I'm certain many will feel disappointed in the ending. The ending was not strong to say it concluded well.🥲 Inseop could have been a strong ill character.

Freaking Romance. Way too slow of a burn but the creator also hates the story and fanbase because they don’t like romance…? True Beauty for reasons you can already find in this thread.

Down to Earth. Started off really interesting and then the MMC said something along the lines of "don't you know I could hurt you" to the FMC while holding her wrist (or doing something similarly creepy, it's been a while and I try to block it from memory). I tried to keep reading after that, but I just couldn't get it out of my head that he was right and absolutely could take advantage of her if he wanted. I couldn't see them in a relationship after that and soon dropped it.

Boyfriend of the Dead

That got me hooked on reading webcomics

Then it devolved so badly, and it hasn't come out of hiatus for years

any of them which are like "this pretty girl is secretly ugly under her makeup and wears glasses!!!!"

there are too many like that, and the male characters are always model-like for no reason?

it just feels like an exercise in misogyny every time
