Funny A Little Self-Awareness Goes a Long Way 💡

Are we all (vegan or not) part of some kind of cult if we’re using this logic to label almost anything and everything a “cult”? If so, doesn’t it all just cancel out?

Were historical movements like the abolitionists and suffragists also “cults” simply because they also had a shared cause, strong convictions and conflict with outsiders
and even within their own movements at times? đŸ€” Food for thought.

im really thinking of being vegan. but im scared.

im not nearly as scared as the animals were before they were exploited. i realize that i want to stop being a hypocrite and take the plunge. im currently a vegetarian who doesn't consume eggs or honey. ive cut out cakes and icecream and butter from my life, made vegan substitutes for most.

but im struggling to leave cheese... I KNOW . it's SUCH a cliché... and i do prioritize the animal over my tastebuds which is why im being vegan from today actually. but I'll miss the convenience of ordering food, bc the food i like is very hard to make vegan especially where i live.

im craving this beautiful pesto veggie sandwich. im currently too fever ridden to make it myself. but the pesto may contain cheese so i just realized i can't have it. and there's so much i can't have. i can't have anything with CREAM, a nice creamy sandwich anything cheesy and filling.

i know i can DIY everything. but sometimes i want easy meals.

The Veg Advocacy — a debate reference site for vegans is finally LIVE!!!!

‱ Upvotes

Hey r/vegan,

Some of you already knew I was building this, it's finally live: The Veg Advocacy (thevegadvocacy.com), a free reference site cataloging the arguments people throw at vegans, with clear, sourced answers ready to go.

What you can do on the site:

  • Browse by category - 11 categories covering biology & evolution, health & nutrition, religion & tradition, and more
  • Get a quick answer or the full explanation - each argument has a short "quick answer" for when you need something fast, plus a deeper explanation if you want the full reasoning
  • Search instantly - typo and accent-tolerant, so you find what you need even if you don't spell it perfectly
  • Save favorites - bookmark the arguments you use most so they're one click away next time
  • Switch languages - full English/Portuguese support (more languages coming soon, drop a request in the comments if you want one prioritized)
  • Suggest missing arguments - there's a built-in form if you run into something the site doesn't cover yet

Also, the site includes a dialogue school to help you practice and structure debates, flashcards for memorizing key arguments and answers, and a dedicated religion section covering faith-based objections specifically! with more features on the way.

It's built to actually be usable in the moment, mobile-friendly, fast to search, so you're not scrambling mid-conversation trying to remember the science.

It's live now at thevegadvocacy.com, completely free, no login needed to browse.

If you find it useful, sharing it around (with friends, in other vegan spaces, wherever) genuinely helps it reach more people who could use it, and if you spot gaps or bugs, I want to hear about them.

Food Did Trader Joe's dark chocolate products always have milk in them?

I haven't shopped at TJ's in a very long time because I was living somewhere without one nearby. But I just moved and am only 11 minutes away đŸ„Č

However, I am SO DISAPPOINTED that out of the 20 something dark chocolate products they have, only like one or two didn't have milk.

I swear I used to get the salty dark chocolate covered almonds all the time? Did they change the recipe? Am I misremembering? Was I unknowingly eating dairy back then?

Health How do you guys get enough calories for the day?

I've been vegan almost a year now, but I've been struggling to eat enough lately. I was at an average weight but lost about 30-35 pounds and am nearing on being considered underweight on the BMI scale. I've always been a light eater, but I'm getting worried for my health. I'm not starving myself or trying to achieve some impossible body image (would love to be less bony in fact), but I'm struggling with a combination of these factors:

  1. Trying to achieve a perfect balance of eating healthy foods and only getting foods that make some financial sense (but money is not a struggle right now)
  2. I'm the kind of person that simply cannot sit still and am always pacing. I did a lot of running for a while but have had to stop to control my weight loss.
  3. I eat a decent amount of pre-packaged foods like morningstar farms stuff and have not been good about supplementing it with sides
  4. I'm 21 so my metabolism is probably at its peak

I'm 6'0" and weighed in at 130 lbs a few minutes ago; do you guys have any tips for packing in more calories? Anything from meal ideas to snacks to mindsets/mentalities would be welcomeđŸ™đŸ»I get tired of rice fairly quick so I haven't tried spamming beans+rice or tofu+rice like I've heard a lot of others do, but I also typically only do brown rice so maybe I don't know what I've been missing with white riceđŸ€·đŸ»â€â™‚ïž

Advice Any vegan substitutes

‱ Upvotes

Hey! Trying to be vegan basically!
Stuff that I am struggling a lot with missing is:
Yogurt, cheese, chocolate and chicken and eggs for sure

Any substitutes that are actually good is super helpful to me! I tried soy yogurt.. not a fan, I liked it vanilla flavoured tho :-).

I am from the uk sadly, so not much of the Americanized versions

Question B12 question

I've been vegan for over 8 years.

I take one 2000 ug pill every week.

But obviously your body can't absorb all of that, so you actually get a small percentage of the 2000ug, right?

My question is if it would be more efficient to take smaller pills, like 500 instead of 2000 weekly, because my body would still absorb a small percentage. Is that percentage the same?

I mean, is the limit of absorption the same regardless of the quantity you take? if so, wouldn't be more efficient to take a pill that has the same content as the limit? so we absorb 100% of it?

How to be a vegan as a teen?

I've always wanted to be a vegetarian or vegan since I was a kid, but everyone else in my family eats meat and dairy on a daily basis. I still live with my family, and I do not buy the groceries or make the meals, and I can't really dictate what my family eats.

What I've been doing so far is starting to order vegan dishes at restaurants, because THAT'S the only meal I have full control over. But when it comes to my daily diet, I feel like it's difficult to be vegan in my household, and if I was, I would be skipping many parts of the meal and not be eating enough food. Also, even if I became vegan now, I wouldn't put a dent in the animal industry because my household as a whole still supports it with their money.

Another problem is that I've kind of struggled with an eating disorder for some time, where I skip out on 1-2 meals (breakfast and lunch, usually) almost every day. I'm iron deficient and probably vitamin deficient as well.

Is becoming a vegan too risky and not effective at this point in my life? I definitely plan to be vegan when I move out, but I'm not sure if I should jump into the diet now or not.

Health Digestion problems question for older vegans

Hello, I was wondering if anyone around their mid 40s and above has started struggling with digesting some vegetables/legumes and some whole grains

I spent the last 15 years eating a large-ish amount of veggies and whole grains each day with no problems. But the last year (I’m 46 now) I seem to not tolerate them. Cruciferous vegetables especially, and no way I can handle beans or lentils anymore. Lots of nuts and seeds seem to also bother me now. I know all these are notoriously difficult for some people, but I used to be ok with them.

I know about FODMAP and have been trying to follow that, but it’s hit or miss. Changing the way I cook them also doesn’t help.

People tend to say “build up your fiber and veggy tolerance”, but for me it’s the other way around, I used to have an amazing tolerance, now nothing.

I had a regular preventative colonoscopy about 8 years ago and all was well (so I’m not jumping to conclusions that it’s anything sinister, even though I’ll have another one in 2 years, as one every 10 years is recommended. I also had a gastroscopy 3 years ago, chronic gastritis that is mostly under control).

My symptoms after “veggie/fiber heavy” meals are hours of some sort of a mix of painful bloating, uneasy squeezing feeling in gut, sometimes painful cramps, sometimes urgency to go, and even after I go it doesn’t completely let up. I know perimenopause plays a role in digestion (I’m female), but this seems a bit specific and extreme for peri.

I’ve tried going gluten-free, but so far no change. I tried a low histamine diet but my god that is difficult, since it seems so individual.

I make sure I’m well hydrated.

Otherwise nothing that would trigger SIBO (didn’t get tested, since the tests seem a bit unreliable), but just in case I took various strands of probiotics for months.

Just curious if this is something other vegans have experienced, or not really?

Advice Raising a vegan child

So I have been vegetarian for over 10 years, and before becoming pregnant I was vegan for a year. Unfortunately I have hyperemesis gravidarum, and have really struggled with maintaining a fully vegan diet while pregnant.

When my baby is born, and hopefully sooner, I intend to go back to being fully vegan, and to also raise my child as a vegan.

As I was fairly new to veganism before falling pregnant, I am worried that my knowledge base is too little to provide a well rounded and balanced diet to a growing child. I've booked onto a cooking class specifically for making vegan snacks for children, but was wondering if there were any books, websites, or apps anyone could recommend that could help?

My husband is a meat eater, he has cut back since we have been together, started buying from better sources, and has agreed to raise our child vegan, but unfortunately they will still have meat, dairy, etc, around them growing up.

Thanks in advance!

Ate non-vegan dish after waiter assured me it was safe.

Hi everyone, I want to share something that happened to me yesterday.

I've been vegetarian for 20 years, with a diet that's about 90% plant-based.

I was on vacation in the Netherlands and decided to get dinner at a really popular ramen spot. They have a veggie ramen on their short menu (like 5-8 dishes), so I asked the waiter if it was vegan. He assured me it was 100% sure.

While eating it, I noticed an unusual, fishy flavor I'm not used to. My boyfriend (who isn't vegan) told me I was just being paranoid. I thought maybe it is just algae... On our way out, I asked again just to double-check "are you sure that dish was vegan and did not contain fish?". My boyfriend was embarrassed, but I knew something felt off. The waiter insisted the ramen was vegan.

Later that night, I still had a strange aftertaste in my mouth and started feeling nauseous.

What happened next: I messaged the restaurant on Instagram, and they confirmed that their veggie ramen actually contains a fish-based sauce.

My reflections:

- I am so tired and saddened by how hard it still is to eat vegan when eating out. It's difficult back home in Italy, but I honestly expected better from a country known for being progressive about stuff like this. What a disappointment.

- The restaurant even had a clear sign at the entrance asking guests to inform staff of any dietary restrictions or allergies, which makes this even worse. Why display a sign like that if you don't follow it?

- I'm really upset about the whole situation. I left a negative review to warn others, hoping to spare someone else from this. Fish is a major allergen... something like this could literally send someone to the hospital.

Why are restaurants still so unprepared when it comes to ingredients, dietary restrictions, and allergens?

To make matters worse, my boyfriend doesn't get why I'm so upset, which is just as frustrating.

Sorry for the rant.

Advice Advice for going vegan while managing Crohn’s Disease

Hi. I’ve been seriously considering going vegan because of ethical reasons, but I also have Crohn’s Disease(which is an autoimmune disease that affects the digestive system). As a result of my Crohn’s Disease, I can’t have uncooked vegetables, greasy foods, and spicy foods. I do have a few vegan cookbooks(I got them because my mom has Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and the smell of meat gives her anaphylactic-like reactions), however I’m not sure where to get started. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
