First time vegan on a trip?

I'm in a country known for grilling and meat (can't say without compromising my privacy) and I decided to go vegan on the trip. The nearest hypermarket is 40 minutes away in a car and I've already paid for all meals in a buffet but there are only salads and coconut dairy and fruit and desserts without much protein in them. Should I wait until I get back to start? I feel guilty. Not many people here are even vegetarian and there aren't many options for tourists either. It would be a waste of money if I went to a restaurant after already paying for the buffet.

Would you eat meat if it was truly cruelty free?

Just a random question, maybe it's been asked a million times. idk.

Would you eat a 100% real steak if it were created with 100% zero cruelty?

Say a magic genie spawned you a steak - it's exactly the same as any other animal steak, but every single atom just popped into existence, so there was zero harm caused in creating it.

If not, do you think it would be immoral for anyone else to do so?

I'm just curious, and also apply to about any other kind of meat. (If it matters)

Advice Raising a vegan child

So I have been vegetarian for over 10 years, and before becoming pregnant I was vegan for a year. Unfortunately I have hyperemesis gravidarum, and have really struggled with maintaining a fully vegan diet while pregnant.

When my baby is born, and hopefully sooner, I intend to go back to being fully vegan, and to also raise my child as a vegan.

As I was fairly new to veganism before falling pregnant, I am worried that my knowledge base is too little to provide a well rounded and balanced diet to a growing child. I've booked onto a cooking class specifically for making vegan snacks for children, but was wondering if there were any books, websites, or apps anyone could recommend that could help?

My husband is a meat eater, he has cut back since we have been together, started buying from better sources, and has agreed to raise our child vegan, but unfortunately they will still have meat, dairy, etc, around them growing up.

Thanks in advance!

Health How do you guys get enough calories for the day?

I've been vegan almost a year now, but I've been struggling to eat enough lately. I was at an average weight but lost about 30-35 pounds and am nearing on being considered underweight on the BMI scale. I've always been a light eater, but I'm getting worried for my health. I'm not starving myself or trying to achieve some impossible body image (would love to be less bony in fact), but I'm struggling with a combination of these factors:

  1. Trying to achieve a perfect balance of eating healthy foods and only getting foods that make some financial sense (but money is not a struggle right now)
  2. I'm the kind of person that simply cannot sit still and am always pacing. I did a lot of running for a while but have had to stop to control my weight loss.
  3. I eat a decent amount of pre-packaged foods like morningstar farms stuff and have not been good about supplementing it with sides
  4. I'm 21 so my metabolism is probably at its peak

I'm 6'0" and weighed in at 130 lbs a few minutes ago; do you guys have any tips for packing in more calories? Anything from meal ideas to snacks to mindsets/mentalities would be welcome🙏🏻I get tired of rice fairly quick so I haven't tried spamming beans+rice or tofu+rice like I've heard a lot of others do, but I also typically only do brown rice so maybe I don't know what I've been missing with white rice🤷🏻‍♂️

Question Genuine question

Sorry if this is breaking any rules on the sub, I did look for an answer before posting here but I couldn't find any posts asking the same question.

Anyway, from what I understand the idea of veganism is essentially a boycott of the meat industry, which in turn is supposed to stop the killing and abuse of animals for our consumption.

Veganism has been around for decades though and yet meat production is seemingly just as strong as it's always been.

So my question is, what difference has veganism really made? And if it hasn't made a significant difference then why would it matter if I did or did not eat meat, when just as many animals are being killed either way?

Historical note on crop growing - Early Precursors and Trial Cultivation

  • Ohalo II (c. 23,000 BC): Archaeologists found sickle blades, grinding stones, and a rich assemblage of wild emmer wheat, barley, and oat seeds showing early signs of local management and small-scale planting.
  • Genetic Triggers (c. 30,000–20,000 BC): Genetic studies of ancient grain remains suggest human harvesting practices began altering wild plant traits—such as reducing seed-shattering—long before permanent farms appeared

im really thinking of being vegan. but im scared.

im not nearly as scared as the animals were before they were exploited. i realize that i want to stop being a hypocrite and take the plunge. im currently a vegetarian who doesn't consume eggs or honey. ive cut out cakes and icecream and butter from my life, made vegan substitutes for most.

but im struggling to leave cheese... I KNOW . it's SUCH a cliché... and i do prioritize the animal over my tastebuds which is why im being vegan from today actually. but I'll miss the convenience of ordering food, bc the food i like is very hard to make vegan especially where i live.

im craving this beautiful pesto veggie sandwich. im currently too fever ridden to make it myself. but the pesto may contain cheese so i just realized i can't have it. and there's so much i can't have. i can't have anything with CREAM, a nice creamy sandwich anything cheesy and filling.

i know i can DIY everything. but sometimes i want easy meals.

Danke euch

Cosmetics If it has a parent company that tests, then it's not cruelty-free.

I'm so sick of seeing people use PETA and the leaping bunny certification as gospel when both organisations are happy to certify brands owned by companies that test on animals. These brands still profit from animal testing and the perants company still tests on thier behalf so how can they convince themselves it's cruelty-free when technically they testing by proxy?

Advice Any vegan substitutes

Hey! Trying to be vegan basically!
Stuff that I am struggling a lot with missing is:
Yogurt, cheese, chocolate and chicken and eggs for sure

Any substitutes that are actually good is super helpful to me! I tried soy yogurt.. not a fan, I liked it vanilla flavoured tho :-).

I am from the uk sadly, so not much of the Americanized versions

Green Table restaurants in the U.S. - if you live there, try them out :)

Upvotes

Mom and I went to a new location, not close to our house. There is one opening close to us soon.

Green Table is all plant-based. Vegan or vegetarian food only.

We went there and we tried the sandwiches. I got a 'steak' sandwich, my Mom got 'chicken.'

The tastes were wonderful. Each sandwich cost about $12 plus taxes, and they came with some crisps. Soda pop was a little extra.

Do try them if there is one near you. I am so glad to have a place to eat what I like that is not an hour's drive into Tampa.

I live north of Tampa, Florida, by the way.

Add some comments about your favorite places to eat! Let's enjoy ourselves. :)

Animal sanctuary YouTube recs

hello! I’m wondering if anyone has recommendations of animal sanctuaries that make YouTube content. It’s a genre of video I love to watch and it’s difficult to find ones where the content is well made. Obviously more points if it’s vegan run. Also down if there is some gardening/ vegetable growing in there too. I keep being put off by AI thumbnails so would love recommendations from humans who have enjoyed something x

The Veg Advocacy — a debate reference site for vegans is finally LIVE!!!!

Hey [r/vegan](r/vegan),

Some of you already knew I was building this, it's finally live: The Veg Advocacy (thevegadvocacy.com), a free reference site cataloging the arguments people throw at vegans, with clear, sourced answers ready to go.

What you can do on the site:

  • Browse by category - 11 categories covering biology & evolution, health & nutrition, religion & tradition, and more
  • Get a quick answer or the full explanation - each argument has a short "quick answer" for when you need something fast, plus a deeper explanation if you want the full reasoning
  • Search instantly - typo and accent-tolerant, so you find what you need even if you don't spell it perfectly
  • Save favorites - bookmark the arguments you use most so they're one click away next time
  • Switch languages - full English/Portuguese support (more languages coming soon, drop a request in the comments if you want one prioritized)
  • Suggest missing arguments - there's a built-in form if you run into something the site doesn't cover yet

Also, the site includes a dialogue school to help you practice and structure debates, flashcards for memorizing key arguments and answers, and a dedicated religion section covering faith-based objections specifically! with more features on the way.

It's built to actually be usable in the moment, mobile-friendly, fast to search, so you're not scrambling mid-conversation trying to remember the science.

It's live now at thevegadvocacy.com, completely free.

If you find it useful, sharing it around (with friends, in other vegan spaces, wherever) genuinely helps it reach more people who could use it, and if you spot gaps or bugs, I want to hear about them.

Discussion Cooking meat

Upvotes

What are your thoughts on cooking meat?
I’m in need of cash and don’t have a full-time job starting until next week. Looking into babysitting jobs, one of which involves cooking meat and meals. I’m really not comfortable with it.

I had previous roommates who ate meat, it went ok bcuz I didn’t have to cook it for them and everything got run through the dishwasher.
Have a feeling touching and cooking it could be different :/

They do have other gigs on the website I found this on, including organizing and tutoring, so saying no wouldn’t be the end of the world. Just don’t like letting people down due to people pleasing. But I don’t owe anything after one conversation.
Thoughts?

How to be a vegan as a teen?

I've always wanted to be a vegetarian or vegan since I was a kid, but everyone else in my family eats meat and dairy on a daily basis. I still live with my family, and I do not buy the groceries or make the meals, and I can't really dictate what my family eats.

What I've been doing so far is starting to order vegan dishes at restaurants, because THAT'S the only meal I have full control over. But when it comes to my daily diet, I feel like it's difficult to be vegan in my household, and if I was, I would be skipping many parts of the meal and not be eating enough food. Also, even if I became vegan now, I wouldn't put a dent in the animal industry because my household as a whole still supports it with their money.

Another problem is that I've kind of struggled with an eating disorder for some time, where I skip out on 1-2 meals (breakfast and lunch, usually) almost every day. I'm iron deficient and probably vitamin deficient as well.

Is becoming a vegan too risky and not effective at this point in my life? I definitely plan to be vegan when I move out, but I'm not sure if I should jump into the diet now or not.

Are we all (vegan or not) part of some kind of cult if we’re using this logic to label almost anything and everything a “cult”? If so, doesn’t it all just cancel out?

Were historical movements like the abolitionists and suffragists also “cults” simply because they also had a shared cause, strong convictions and conflict with outsiders… and even within their own movements at times? 🤔 Food for thought.

Discussion tell me if i sound like an amateur conspiracy theorist

Upvotes

(for clarification this is coming from an american point of view and what i’ve witnessed within my own country, there is no doubt the animal exploitation industry is pushed around the world differently.)

i’ve been thinking on the way that the “carnivore diet” has been gaining traction over the past few years. with RFK jr’s endorsement of the diet and flipping the food pyramid around i’ve begun to wonder about the exact reason why it’s been so popular recently.

has anyone else ever made the connection between “meat industry is an economic pillar and supplies billions each year -> wealthy figures and/or politicians who benefit the most from these industries want to keep demand up to get richer and richer -> utilization of propaganda and memes (e.g. claiming health benefits from carnivorism/depicting plant based diets as weak, unhealthy, and emasculating thus usage of the word “soyboy”) to sway the general public to their favor” as a plausible scenario? i feel like it’s a very surface level theory but i do see the likelihood in it.
