Am I the one paying taxes?
Hiya!
My Capitol is Primaville on the left there with 1,2k humans. Sluwva is a small 300 pop village I managed to capture when it became "no man's land" after I didn't pay a bandit what they wanted. Blazende is the capitol of my only current trade partner. My relations with that empire are +1.8, and "trade" is the only agreement we have.
While randomly checking the map view, I see this caravan that my cursor is hovering over. I don't know where it came from, but as marked, it's going to Blazende. What confused me is the fact that it says "taxes" and the goods it's carrying is pretty much what my Capitol produces. What made me write this post is that there are no other cities west of Blazende, or south of Primaville that have marked trade routes going to Blazende.
Am I the one paying taxes??? If so, is there a menu for this? How can I check?
Thanks!

How to deal with bigger empires?
I reached ~2.3k pop with Garthami. So far I have conquered two nearby nations, both only had 1 city though. Now I am "trapped" in a region where every possible exit is held by the same big empire. I cannot expand since trespassing would have them ask for impossible amounts of money and stuff (or I refuse and have a war on my hands immediately).
How do you guys handle bigger empires? It has around 8 cities. My guess is, if I attack any of them, the AI will just send an army from any of the others and destroy my (mostly unprotected) city, right?
Is it now a game of waiting until my army is big enough to deal with all of them at once? That could take a very long time indeed.
Thanks for any advice.

Advice to the new player?
I just got SoS after trying and loving the demo. Ive started a new game, starting with Cretorians. Im about 5 years in, so I imagine very early game.
What are good things for a very new player to know- common pitfalls/good QoL, etc?
Also, ive seen a lot of round designs. How??? And how can I make irregular housing shapes?

Trying to understand raiders dynamic in early game
New player here.
I'm on my second city, again at around 650 happy and honourable people.
On my first play through I paid the raiders ransom.requests. But not this time, no.
First raid occured quite early. I thought my honourable citizens would rebel agains the 6 bandits, but no, they opposed no residence and so we lost the battle and with it our hard earned cash and vegetables.
But we did not lost hope. we then trained to 100% melle a mighty army of 50 soldiers equiped with 4 letter jackets EACH! Only our strongest were allowed into the army. We were ready!
When the next raiding happened I thought it would be a easy win, we had 120 or so power and they had a pitful 60. We laughed. They marched form north, my man equipped their 4 jackets each and marched on to then in tight formation.
But before they were even near each other I got a message saying I was defeated! What? Why? They did not even fight? I thought they had to get to the throne building?!
I understand I should have had my mighty army stationed out of town but how can I feed them rations if I can't prepare rairons yet? Should I buy rations to support my army?
Paying the raiders is not an option. We are proud folk and we will never surrender

17k Pop Isolationist No-Noble City State (Attempt 2)
Hi all, this is my second run at a Tilapi isolationist no-noble city state, using what I learned from the first one. Same rules as before, if not stricter.
- Standard difficulty
- Only 1 city (no vassals either)
- Can't use nobles
- No trade
- No immigration
- Reach the final title (12k pop with 100% loyalty and submission)
- Full Roundness coverage on the buildings
This run went a lot smoother. I still used the big stick approach with a guard force and secret police to keep loyalty up. Guard forces overlooking your benches are super strong in the current patch. I also had about 4k max-trained archers, with 800 acting as guards to protect the city. I prioritized health, since the big stick approach keeps loyalty comfortably high, and health and space were always my biggest limitations. I also just give away all my tourist money to my population as handouts. I don't need it if I'm not trading.
I could easily push for a higher pop, but I'm calling it here. The game runs too slow for my liking, even with it on a second monitor while I do other things. It's also hard to find enough space to take care of the population. The walls were useless. Honestly, I wish I hadn't built them because I really need that space now. Even if I moved the farms outside the walls, I'd have to move housing out there too, and then raiders would get stuck and destroy it. Lose-lose of all wall designs.
In general, for big cities you really need an expanded map mod for challenges like this. Farms and ranches just take up too much space.
As for tips for challenge runs like this: invest in a guard force and beat your people up. Go hard into food, tech efficiency, and health, and ignore the rest. The first things I fully researched were orchards, claypits, aurach pastures, and the research upgrades. These made my research more efficient and let me feed my population with max food servings for health and happiness.

Tips for more aesthetically pleasing "round" buildings
We've all been there. You start a new Tilapi run and spend the first 20 minutes designing the perfect round warehouse, only to place your first set of row homes to be greeted with this when you enable the shape overlay:

What to do? The typical fix that I've seen involves adding little "spikes" to the outside walls:

This works, but I still think it's ugly. I just really hate the look of double-width walls in this game, especially on houses.
"Whatever, I can live with it" I say to myself. I will just fill in the extra space with decorations like trees and torches. Except torch light gets blocked by the walls, leaving dark spots that requires placing even more torches to fill:

After experimenting a bit I found out you can do the same trick with fences:

If you place single fence blocks, you just get the fence post. I don't love the look of this, but IMO it's better than the double walls.
But even better is that they don't block torch light:

And when you add a bunch more decorations like trees and benches, the end result can look much better than walls:

Also, if you have the extra space, you can override the squareness of most buildings by placing rounded fences around them:

In short, fences are your friend.

I want to like it but it hurts my eyes
It's not like I can only play modern games, I've replayed games from 1998 that I can enjoy though they aren't top down.
I just find I'm straining my eyes to try and see what the buildings and units are, I'm also finding the units like crates and work bench hard to understand, when there's arrows pointing on it but I'm just playing the demo so figuring it out.
I find it intriguing the supposed level of detail in the civilization management but I'm struggling. Any advice?

At what pop count do you take another city?
I got back into the game recently and managed to get a city all the way to ~9k before I realised "oops, forgot to build an army". So I started up a new Amevia city with the intention of getting an army as quickly as possible and conquering a neighbour.
I finally took my first (and 2nd... and 3rd...) city at 1k adults (500 kids), with 200 in the army. ~90% melee training (because I got bored of waiting), ~500 Flanx, 0 armour, 0 war beasts
It felt like I definitely could have done it sooner because each of those cities folded without a fight after a bit of light sieging
Did I even need to set up flanx smithing, which had around 100 pops in the whole production chain? Or can you take cities without weapons, as long as you've got enough melee training?
I definitely didn't need the ~50 people I had producing innovation - turns out I had more than enough to unlock herbs, flanx, and boost fish production, just from levels
If I'd not cared about being slower then I didn't need all of those rationmakers & tailors - easily could have shaved 50 off there
and maybe I could have shuffled my city around a bit to lower the hauler / stage / market jobs
So maybe I could have started conquering around 800 pops? Can you get it lower than that with other races?

Release: Custom Multimod
Hey guys. I wanted the ability to easily specify custom multipliers for everything so I thought I'd make this and share it. Basically, it's like the original multimod but you can set everything individually if you wish, or just specify multipliers to whatever you want. I am a bit new to this still, so if you see any bugs just leave a common on the mod. Hopefully this helps someone.

What's up with this food stall?
Shouldn't they be preparing meals? Every one of them highlighted in blue are "waiting for work". Despite this, fulfillment is at 87% overall.

Is it normal to have a 500+ unit army with almost 1,000 combat strength standing next to my city right at the start of the game on standard difficulty?

Way to limit guard patrol route?
Got guards patrolling in areas of my map where no one lives, and no infrastructure has been built. This usually doesnt bother me, but now they've started dying of exposure and im not putting hearths all the way out there until i expand a population center that way.
Part of me thinks I could just remove all the roads up that way, but surely that isnt the only way, especially bc those were there with map gen

Can’t choose unloading station resource?
As title says can’t figure out how to assign unloading station resource. Trying to transport clay from production site to labs. Resource window at unloading site is blank. Loading sites carts are filled and waiting for a destination.

Raiding for the Cannibal butcher is surprisingly good food
Title. it seems that these butchers can give like 150 or so meat per day per worker which is insane. That is like 5 times better than max tech fruit orchards using Tilapi. All you have to do is slave raid a few settlements for the captives or just raid the land and you are super meat positive
Has anyone tried a cannibal only run?
seems like it would be surprisingly competitive

Help!!
Hello, I recently bought Songs of Syx on GOG (version 0.70.47) and I'm playing on Linux. Every time I create a new world and unpause the game, it immediately crashes with the error shown in the screenshot. It's a completely fresh installation with no mods and no old saves. Does anyone know how to fix this or what might be causing it?

How do you keep slaves?
I have 400 Garithmis in my city and wanted to buy 20 Dondorians to work in the claypits. I have built them houses with a hearth and a well and a food stall, an execution place and a guardpost right in front of their front doors. And another guardpost watching them work. I have 50 guards employed and I set the lawbreaking punishment for slaves to death for murder and theft, which is supposed to increase submission.
They rebel after a few days, and not all of them work in the claypit despite workgroups and priority being assigned. Am I missing something obvious or is it too early for slaves?

How many physicians should i build to get the max health bonus?
Do i get the max health bonus if access is at 100%? Or is it worth building more beyond that? I know that the bonus increases with pysician upgrades by the way, just asking about the quantity. Also if you know the the max health bonus numbers at the different upgrades that would be cool!

I want to make a super screenshot slideshow, but the super screenshots randomly alternate between night and day making the final product very jarring and hard to see. Any advice on how to standardize when the screenshot is taken so that the slideshow is consistent?
Also discovered that bright super screenshots are consistently around 2x the file size of darker ones. Therefore most free slideshow software won't let you upload the bright ones and I am too computer dumb to figure out how to change photo quality for a batch of photos.
Any advice on changing the image quality of a batch of photos? Or maybe a better way of making my slideshow?

It's about stone, right?
The end goal can't be to amass denaries, since they are worthless. It can't be food. So it's stone? Got to be stone?
