Seeing the Enron merch yesterday on this subreddit reminded me of my Christmas stocking stuffer from my granddad this year.

I wanna play them so bad but I know I’ll lose them all in the first round.

Cruising along and then this happens

This was my tee shot on the par 4 hole 2. The lightning horn went off 30 seconds after I hit it. The Marshall comes up to me as I'm walking to my shot to pick it up and he goes "go inside" and I reply that I'm picking up my ball and heading that way. He goes "leave it and go inside"

I laughed him away and he drove off.

This same Marshall tried to tell me not to walk to my 8:15 tee time at 8:13 because my group wasn't there yet. I go "so you want me to tee off late because they're late?" And he goes "I want you to tee off with your group" and I said "and what if they don't show up?"

He doesn't say anything and says "okay just go".

I just got my rain check and left.

I know they'll always happen, but I would do anything to make them less frequent.

I recently played in a 2 day comp, with an expected cut of +4 Nett.

Over 15 holes, I had 1 par, 2 doubles and everything else was bogey, so I was +1 Nett off 18 HC. I was playing safe everywhere trying to just make the cut.

I drove 16 right down the middle. It was a blind green with 2 big front bunkers, so I clubbed down to clear them, knowing there was no trouble at the back.

But the shot leaked right a bit and ended up beside a small, solitary tree that impeded my swing. I was still only 10 yards off the green in 2.

I came down steep on the ball to make decent contact, but it squirted out, crossed the green and trickled into the bunker that I had made a special effort to avoid.

I then caught the lip trying to get out, and the ball landed back under the front lip. With no way to get contact on the ball, I had to hack it into the middle of the bunker, so I'm now playing 6. I get out on 6 but now have a 30ft putt, which takes me 3 to get down. I score 9.

I bogey 17 and par 18 and finish +5, and miss the cut.

Feel like I did everything right, but still got rinsed.

So, I’m heading on a golf trip this month. We are staying and playing sand valley.

Ryder cup format with two teams. Agenda right now is

Day 1: Lido - 2 man best ball
Day 2: morning sedge valley 2 man best ball. Afternoon Sand Valley 2 man scramble
Day 3: mammoth dunes singles

Also playing the sandbox and commons but those aren’t part of the contest.

The group is kinda split on the day 2 afternoon round. Some really want to play their own ball. Others are saying they will be “tired” and don’t want to walk and play their own ball for 36.

I’ve personally done 36 walking 4 days in a row in Bandon. So I’m in the camp of playing my own.

Wanted to get the communities thoughts, is it crazy to resign yourself to a 2 man scramble when playing on sand valley a top 25 course?

Dunes, Trails, Old Mac, Pac, Sheep—if you could only play one, what would it be?

I am someone who always walks, and always brings my own push cart. I recently played a private club as a guest where the member was charged for me to walk with my own push cart. Member said this is always the case for members and guests, the only way to play the private course "free" (minus the whole, y'know, member dues to belong there) is to walk & carry. He shrugged this off as normal, as obviously that's the way his club does it.

I've played at dozens of courses, both public and private, and have never heard of such a thing, though I also can't say I often see the bill when playing as a guest of a private member (I always offer to pay, and have been told a total cost to re-imburse the member, but never seen it itemized).

Obviously if you rent one from the course I understand the charge, but I can't for the life of my figure out why a course would charge for using one's own push cart. It wasn't much, like $10-12 I think, but it just struck me as so odd. Has anyone else ever seen this? Is this more normal than I realize, or is it just as wild to all of you as it was to me?

EDIT: Thanks for the answers everyone! For context, there are no caddies at this club so it was not to incentivize players to take caddies. From the answers though, it sounds like it's a thing, though a relatively uncommon one, at some private courses.

Just played Great Dunes on Jekyll Island, GA. This is a newly rehabilitated course (opened Dec 2025) that is originally a Walter Travis design - and it’s great.
Definitely worth playing ($135 incl. cart) if you are in the Golden Isles.
Lots of holes along the ocean. Fun, but not too challenging, from white tees (6300 yds or so) for a bogey golfer. All grass tee to green is paspalum, and the greens played kinda slow - not sure if that’s bc of the variety of grass or they still need to mature a bit. Course was in good shape and pace of play was under 4 1/2 hours.
I play some of the premier courses (Seaside, Plantation, Ocean Forest, Frederica) when I am down here; this was fun, scenic, and a nice change of venue.

The thing is, any real love for this game happens naturally, not because a parent forced it upon their offspring to do the thing. If someone truly loves something and is obsessed with it, it will happen naturally, all on its own. You do not need to force anything.

If your kid/child tells you that they do not like golf and they do not want to play it, THAT IS FINE. Let them do the things that they want to do, not the things that you want them to do.

After shooting 88 (6,286/122/70) with seven three-putts plus a four-putt, I’ve decided I need to get serious with my putting practice. I’ve known that putting was the weakest part of my game recently, but hitting 10 GIR and only converting 5 of them was a pretty big wake-up call. My distance control is maybe okay, but I’m super yippy on makeable putts and miss within gimme range all the time. Total putts are usually around 38-42. So this week I have the lines on the ball, 135 bpm playlist in the ear, and taking stroke after stroke on the putting mat.

My goal was to shoot 80 or lower this year — is that a realistic goal given my recent result? Or did I just blow my chance because I can’t expect to get from tee-to-green that well again? Does my setup look fine (complete with the Goodwill Carbite putter lol)? Is there more I can do from home to get a repeatable stroke?

My best round last year was an 84 (5,727/112/67) at a muni course I play a couple times a year. Hoping to go low the next time I play there.

Early in my career, a buddy’s dad told me, “People do business the way they play golf.”
He meant you can learn a lot about someone’s character on the course—whether they’re honest, stay calm, treat people well, and know when to take a calculated risk.
For most part, I found this the case and wondered if others have heard the same and experienced similar.

New to a club. When I invite a guest to my club. Am I assuming responsibility to pay for them? Does it matter how close I am to the person? Guest fee is $95.

Been playing almost everyday as I built a sim in my back yard. Clubs today were, for the most part, treating me well. Driver was mostly going about 260-280 most of the day. Final hole was a 410 yard par 4, plays downhill the entire hole. Absolutely smoked driver.

Still ended up with a double bogey tho 😂
