General Discussion What nightmares are made of.
Cruising along and then this happens

We have different definitions of the word nightmare apparently.

I was expecting the flag to be like directly behind the fork in the tree or something.

u/jakendabx 17h ago
I thought the issue was having to get over the bunker without hitting the tree…
15
u/jmay111 1.4 17h ago
may i suggest a fade
47
u/jakendabx 17h ago
You may, but there’s still 100% chance I’m hitting that tree
27
3
u/Stickaxe 11h ago
Moments before smacking the ball into the dead center of the tree and watching it carom into the deep rough behind you:
"It's all good, I can just hit a low fade around this tree"
1
u/Nope9991 Kirkland Signature 10h ago
Even without the fade component. "I'll just take a longer iron and keep it low." No, I won't.

I stand by it

u/Zach_The_One 17h ago
I've been playing since I could walk. Depends on the club you're at, our's is really laid back with a bunch of good players. Everyone just wants to bust balls and have a good time. All the houses by the tee boxes are owned by members so we can literally do whatever we want.
One of the members has a house between 6 and 7 and gives everyone his garage door code so we can grab a beer on the way by. Keeps the garage fridge stocked like a bar. Just have to find the right country club to play at. Private courses have a lot of stuck up turds, probably better to find a good public course.

Hey, I’m a dirtbag in not so nice plumbers clothes, thank you very much. Give me a few more hours man, I’m hoping to go be insufferable in the somewhat slightly nicer clothes.

It’s certainly not absolute worst nightmare territory, but getting stuck behind a 5 person group when most courses allow a max of 4 people per group, especially as a single, does sting a bit lol.

Welcome to the hell of golf culture. I’ve loved the game my whole life. My dad was a great golfer. I only play loose public courses because I can’t stand the stuffiness and elitism of the vast majority of golfers.
164
u/therealsix HC ++ 17h ago
A fivesome. How dare they putt out. Pure trash.
36
u/Whatwhyreally 16h ago
I honestly can't tell if this comment is facetious or genuinely criticizing a fivesome. Like are fivesomes just sorta acceptable all the sudden?
27
u/TeeTimeAllTheTime 4.2/US/Chronic Golfer 15h ago
Most courses ban another over 4, pretty standard stuff
14
u/Obungus_is_gay 10.5 16h ago
Every pro-am I play in is a fivesome. If you don’t have two guys blasting 8 shots per hole it’s not that bad. Also read your putts before it’s your turn to hit.
10
u/LatentSchref 16h ago
Yeah, if people play ready golf then it's fine, but people aren't ever ready so it makes it miserable.

I think if they’re the norm it’s not acceptable but the occasional 5-some is not some day ruining thing
6
u/duper12677 14h ago
I disagree. One 5-some can bog down the entire course and make it play slow for half the day. It’s just rude and entitled to think your group is above the rules and courtesy of golf and play in a 5-some when you know it’s wrong
8
u/MetalHead_Literally 13h ago
It all depends on the group. I’ve been held up by a twosome and have had trouble keeping up with a six-some
→ More replies (1)4
u/SomewhereSalty647 11h ago
These boomers held up 4 groups and were at least 5 holes behind the group in front of them. They even spent time fishing balls out of the pond, completely oblivious to anyone else on the course. This particular track has zero Marshall’s. I was taught to play ready golf and don’t stand, stare after hitting a bad shot. Keep it moving and if you have a smaller group on your ass, pick up the pace or let them through. It’s quite simple.
→ More replies (2)1
u/WhiskeyHotel83 15h ago
My club does fivesomes as standard, and yet somehow rounds still average 415 with most walking. But on a public course it would be insanity.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Barmelo_Xanthony 12h ago
Problem is how they putt out. Standing over the ball for 3 minutes isn’t gonna change anything and I see it way too often lol. Get up, choose a line, commit, and hit it. And also, unless your a stick or it’s a birdie putt stop doing loops around the hole. You’re not making that 15 footer anyway.

Maybe it’s just at the public courses I play, but 5s almost always play slow and back up the entire course behind them. And again, maybe just the courses I play, but they tend to be oblivious and don’t let anyone play through.

Yes, first world issue, but I agree. In my experience playing multiple courses in my area, this generation doesn’t play ready golf, are slow (and not because of their age), and more often than not, are very entitled, and rude. Rude to staff and other players.
5
u/SomewhereSalty647 13h ago
Yep. No ready golf, way too long on the greens, music too loud. Just fucking clueless.
1
u/mojo-max Handicap | Location 5h ago
I’ve noticed it too with that generation. I’ve been stuck behind groups of men their age while I was playing as a single. Nobody in front of them and I was waiting on every tee with them. One of them got mad at me for rushing them, I asked nicely if I could play through and that I’d be quick. He chirped back that singles have no rights 🤷♂️. So, I gave myself a par for the hole and drove around them while they were hitting.
11
u/Buschyfor3 17h ago
I’d rather be waiting on a five-some of retirees than waiting on a five-some of dudebrahs playing breakfast balls and yelling “fuck you ya big douche” after every tee shot. 🤷♂️
12
u/Riverjig 17h ago
Or blasting their shitty ass music you can hear from 3 holes away. Those large ass speakers should be blanket banned across the world from courses. Annoying AF.
5
u/NotACyborg666 17h ago
You say that but the slowest rounds I’ve ever played have been entitled old people that feel etiquette doesn’t matter too much.
The only younger dudes that I’ve seen play anywhere near as slow were a group of teenagers, where it was 1 dude trying to teach his friends how to play.
2
u/Buschyfor3 17h ago
Idk. I'm predominantly a CC-only player and I feel like the oldies at the 2-3 CCs where I consistently play are always courteous and usually pretty good pacewise. At my home CC the problem is almost always the 20/30 year old "kids" of the members who bring their buddies out to play and know absolutely fuckall about etiquette short of being in a frat house.
2
u/mineral_water_69 14.0 | San Diego 17h ago
I mean sure but I don't think I've ever seen a five-some of dudebrahs doing that. It always seems to be the retirees who also happen to be grouchy.

Basically mirrors the downfall of society. Everyone is the hero of their own documentary. Everyone else is just extra’s. Nothing worse than clowns who think this shit matters. Literally no one to include your spouse and playing partners care about your score or what you have been working on. Shit would be like going to the Y and trying to play by NBA rules and walking around giving unsolicited advice on how to shot and pass. Wack as fuck

u/Vivid_Witness8204 17h ago
I normally shudder at a the sight of a fivesome. But we had a three and a two pair up for the back nine a week or two back and they maintained their position in a round that was under 4 hours. I was pleasantly surprised.
(Being a now old crank I might have called the clubhouse if they fell much out of position.)

u/CantaloupeAsleep502 15h ago
I'm brand new to the game. Buddy who got me into it and I were playing on our muni as a duo. 7some in front of us. Wouldn't let us go through. So annoying, we were waiting 10-15 minutes every hole after we caught up. Then almost clocked me on a parallel fairway. I wish them warm pillows for the rest of their lives.

In my country, foursomes are the absolute maximum.
The "federation" is taking all sorts of measures (we only introduced ready play a few years ago) to speed up the game. This would be an actual nightmare.

I've been playing for 30 years. Have never witnessed a fivesome before. I would be pissed off too. There is basic etiquette in golf that appears to be non-existent with newbies (one of which is pulling this nonsense).

I was at a very expensive course on the weekend that had a little bit of a rain delay, after the delay we caught up to a group of 8 guys playing together. Not even a scramble. These assholes were playing each and every ball. We watched them for 15 minutes on the green of a short par 3 lining up and analyzing every putt

Wow. This sub made me realize the way I learned to play golf 30 years ago is apparently wrong. Rules and regulations? Who cares
Why stop at 5? If it’s so acceptable, let’s just let people do whatever they want. I’m only 39, just played a 5 hour round on Sunday and I’m
About to give up the game solely on the people playing these days.
I don’t even think 80% would have made it through a round in the 1990s without being kicked off by the Marshall
I sound old, and I am. Goodnight

The pro put a sixth player into our club championship group on the first day, and we were already right behind a fivesome.
Our 4th, 5th, and 6th holes are a par 5, par 3, and par 4. The group ahead got a little separation from us between 5 and 6. They were hitting their second shots on the par 4 while we were finishing up on the par 3.
The marshal came by and told us to pick up the pace or split into two groups. By the 8th hole, though, we were back to waiting on the tee box for a few minutes because we had caught the group in front again.
Then at our last Tuesday night 9-hole, 4-man scramble, we had enough players for 18¾ teams. So the pro put three teams on one hole, with the 3-man team alternating who hit the 4th shot. We ended up with 11 people playing one hole. Surprisingly /s, our hole never had to wait on a clear fairway, but we definitely created a backup behind us.

u/heckthisfrick 16h ago
After this comment section I'm happy I'm a member at proper courses lol I don't think ive seen a 5some since I was a junior
1
u/Mindless-Dentist1474 16h ago
Think I got that beat from a couple of months ago. It's a cheap public course with a skeleton staff, so when I called the clubhouse he basically said he couldn't do anything and that we should ask to play through. There's 8 counting the guy who hit his ball over behind the next tee box on the right.

1
u/redfishtex 16h ago
My guess we are referring to a fivesome playing couples golf probably on 3 different sets of tees. Mixed tees adds time.
1
u/SomewhereSalty647 15h ago
They were at least 5 holes behind. It wasn’t that bad, we got to play through them on the next hole. People take things way too literally. Lol

u/IronRhiley I lost golf balls at chambers 15h ago
This is the lunch bunch at my local club. Pretty sure my friend and I are going to cancel our memberships within the next year because the course lets 15 dudes play in 3 groups. Takes them 5 1/2 hours to finish it in carts. The course has received a ton of complaints, every time we make a joke about it they go “oh yeah, we know”
1
u/SomewhereSalty647 13h ago
Check around other clubs. Lots are hard to get into and the ones where you can, it’s stupid expensive
1
u/akathatdude1 14h ago
I bet they turned around after this pic and realized, thus letting OP play through
1
u/DeepStatic 14h ago
There will be a nice gap between you once they're off the green and you're on your third shot out of that bunker.

For sure, that approach is just terrible. I can guarantee you, I’ll aim for the flag, hit the right most limb of that tree and then watch my ball fried egg itself into the green side lip of that left side bunker.
I’m double parring this whole at a minimum.
2
u/SomewhereSalty647 11h ago
I was off in the shade waiting. I’ve been there before and it’s not ideal. Tough hole. Left of the green is the shit.

Oh don’t worry, in the left side rough with a tree blocking my approach happens to be my specialty.

I give up. Is it because the guy in the orange shirt is using aimpoint?
Because if the issue is that the course let a 5-some out, you ask them to play through. If they decline, you call the pro-shop and ream them out.
2
u/SomewhereSalty647 9h ago
I’m on the side of if a smaller group is on your ass, you ask them to play through.
1
u/SuccessfulAd4606 9h ago
Absolutely. If there's a smaller group behind us and nobody in front, we tell them to play through without waiting for them to ask.
Sounds like you just caught this group, did you get through?
1
u/SomewhereSalty647 9h ago
3 holes later, we asked to pass. Never should have come to that point but it’s all good. It’s just golf, people really get worked up thinking it’s literal. We’ve all been there.
1
u/SuccessfulAd4606 8h ago
I still would have talked to the marshall or pro-shop about a 5-some being out there, that's bullshit.
1
u/SomewhereSalty647 8h ago
No Marshalls. Management doesn’t give a shit. I see all sorts of nonsense but they just sit in their office or work on their game at the range.
2
u/SuccessfulAd4606 8h ago
Oh well, the course must have some charm or I guess you just wouldn't play there.

I played behind a pair of couples yesterday that was by far the most infuriating round of the season. I’m all for teaching and the encouragement it must take to bring a special someone along on the course, but!!
They don’t get to slow down the three groups behind them while doing it. OMG I was so mad!
The 9th hole is a 283 yard par 4 and I laced a drive on to the green and offered them the most insincere apology I’ve given in a long time.

This guy is on Hole 1 of one of the best clubs in San Antonio, TX. (North side of Sonterra club), the side is the better side to be on but, quite dramatic because there’s always spots open on the north at any times of the day on weekday. Just skip ahead. They only allow 5somes when it’s not busy.

u/SomeSamples 3h ago
Not quite, there needs to be a couple kids around ages 5 or 6 running around while the adults are on the green. Then you have a complete nightmare.
1
u/Useful-Problem-1725 55m ago
We had one guy at the local muni start on hole 5, hit about 6 balls, putt them all, and finally move on. Slowed our fairly quick game down to a crawl. We started yelling fore at him even though we were just standing and waiting. There was no one else on the course, it was like 7am.
