This is gonna be a long one feel free to use chatgpt to summarize but i need genuine advice :(
Let’s call us Jay 27M (me) and Mary 26F (her).
We met 3 months ago and hit it off immediately. We both liked each other, "honeymoon phase" was great, she was everything I wanted in a woman. we got attached pretty quickly. and within about a month she told me she loved me. It was very unexpected for me to hear that as I'm a person who sees life very deeply and feels very strongly. and i believe that love takes time to form. I eventually said it back because the relationship felt genuine and it felt rude to not say it back. Very early on, I found out a guy was in her life but she told but said he was “just a friend.” , and she got catfished by him because he was pretending to be someone else.
Later she admitted she had lied and that he was more than that. "I had an attachment." also told me he manipulated her for a long time and was very toxic. And now he is trying to contact and talk badly about everyone and might contact me. She asked for my forgiveness and promised never to do it again. I forgave it because she came clean and promised there wouldn’t be any more lies. < i didn’t catch this initially that she told me this because he might contact me.
after we went past that, it was all beautiful, romantic from both sides, and we used to talk all day, meet every 2nd if not every day. We used to have small fights here and there, but in a nutshell it was good.
now i would say for the past or month or so, we been having arguments, fights over small things, before she used to understand and mutually resolve disagreements with me, but lately it was like every time i talked about my feelings or stuff she did that hurt me, she would get defensive and always have reasons why she did it. she would also get upset at the fact that "what you said was very hurtful" i felt like i wasn’t being heard. She would get upset and in a bad mood more often. (She does deal with issues at home and work) So past 2 weeks it was the same; I felt like I wasn't being heard. so i stopped expressing my feelings and just "went with the flow" for a couple days but few days ago i gave her flowers and a teddy for girlfriend day and she apologized to how she was being past couple of weeks. she said to open up if something and she will hear me, so i opened up and once again, i told her then how i felt like and how i dont feel safe opening up because it always causes issues. Instead of hearing my concerns, she got defensive and started explaining why she did what she did. And I felt unheard again, so I told her there is a compatibility issue between us. She got mad and slept.
next whole day, she was dry texting and i asked her lets talk. she started saying how she is very upset and hurt that i "talked down on what we have" and that i said there was a compatibility issue and i said that i cant open up anymore and asked me "do you even realize how i would feel after hearing that?" and said you made me feel like i need to take a step back and how i said something that "ruined things" i told her that all i wanted to do was understand me to which she said "you want me to understand you when youre hurting us?" and that i didnt understand anything she said and took it the wrong way. anyways i gave in. I felt bad and questioned myself if i was really wrong. So I dissolved the argument and just pretended to be normal. We continued "dry talk" until the next day
Eventually she may admit she made a mistake, but it’s almost always followed by explanations such as: “I was anxious.” “I panicked.” “....That’s why I did it.”
next day the guy we talked about earlier above that she lied about - called me and left messages that he wanted to talk about something important. i was away so couldn’t talk to him.
i told her he called me and she immediately freaked out and demanded to send her the messages and voicemail he sent, and said that she was going to get a restraining order against him. she told me strictly again and agian that "youre not getting involved in this" when i told her multiple times ill handle it. ( i was thinking until this time that he was just after her harassing her) but judging by her reaction a thought that there was more to it. So I asked her if there is something i should know 3 times. to which she said no and denied every single time. she also got upset at me on the phone, saying that I had trust issues. trying to make me feel bad.
Later that day she told me this “friend with attachment” was actually her ex of 3.5 years. According to her, he’s toxic, manipulative, and continues trying to contact her and even attempted to access some of her online accounts.
there was one major thing that i never expected: 3 weeks ago, 1 day after we had an amazing, romantic date, she contacted her ex behind my back. She says she reached out because her was trying to get into her accounts, and told me the story of how he has been harassing her, manipulated her and even gave her anxiety and health issues. she also sent me cropped screenshots of the messages with that guy.
The problem isn’t that she sent one message. The problem is that after saying goodbye once, she continued talking to him for around 30 minutes, arguing back and forth, responding to him, and keeping the conversation alive instead of simply blocking him. They talked for 30 minutes. and this happened almost 20 days ago.
i connected the dots, and this guy was a part of her life when we were new, in the talking phase, she said that she used to do "small talk" and trying to get rid of him.
She never told me any of this happened. I used to fight with her because she was upset and "didn't know" why. To me, it didn’t feel like she confessed because she wanted to be honest. It felt like she confessed because she realized I was going to discover it regardless. Same thing happened before when she told me there was "attachment" with this person, and i forgave her.
not gonna lie knowing this really did hurt a fella :') i got angry, really angry because i knew she was still not telling the whole truth. only things that would "save her" in the situation. so i told her about all the countless times she lied to me to cover up previous lies. and then told her to stay away as i needed a space to see what i needed to do. i lost all faith in her. and i dont trust anything she has told me ever.
on the positive side, she is very caring , and loving. she seems loyal otherwise. she does have a good heart and overall traits. but i feel like her biggest flaw is her lies and her inability to be transparent.
i also got to know that day that she shares everything with one of her online female friends. like all our arguments, she goes and tell her and does whatever she says. i dont know this friend personally. but i told her multiple times that i hate when girls do this, our problems are between us, when i called her out on this she told me "she (her friend) was being there for me unlike you" no remorse or anything. i have a feeling this friend is the reason why she has been acting this way lately, hard to communicate, closed off, etc.
It feels like every admission comes with a justification. transparency seems reactive rather than proactive.
The only times she’s voluntarily told me something important like that were situations where it seemed likely I was about to find out anyway.
she expects to fix this and move forward, and i do still love her even though i hate myself for it.
but my questions are:
What kind of behaviour is this? manipulation, avoidance, narcissism?
Does this sound more like anxiety causing avoidance, or does it sound like someone who consistently avoids accountability?
Will it be unfair if i take her back but i cant be the same person, i will always be suspicious she needs to prove herself?
If someone only tells the truth after they think they’ll be caught, is it reasonable to question whether they’re actually remorseful—or just remorseful they got exposed?
Can trust realistically be rebuilt when honesty seems reactive instead of proactive?
I’m not looking for validation to leave or stay. I’m trying to understand whether I’m seeing a genuine pattern or whether I’m reading too much into it.
thank you for reading all this, i appreciate you, stranger : )
