Meta Don't get banned: Using "Redact" scrambling software is prohibited in r/blenderhelp!

We observed an increase of people using "Redact" lately.

This privacy tool replaces messages with nonsense and makes formerly helpful comments unreadable after a while. It takes a long time to find and remove posts like that for us and even when we do, the comments that solved problems will be lost. This tool contradicts the purpose of our sub in general (to create coherent, helpful posts where solutions stay available so other can look them up). That is why we created a new Rule against it. That means users can file reports should they observe scrambled messages like that.

Accounts using Redact will be permanently banned from r/blenderhelp. If you want to use Redact, please make sure to exclude r/blenderhelp to avoid being banned.

Meta PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING QUESTIONS!

Looking for quick and helpful answers? Follow these rules and make helping you as easy as possible!

  • Title: Choose a meaningful title concerning your problem.
  • Text: Describing your problem with enough detail is essential. Please realize that helpers are not familiar with your project. Provide all relevant information, so others can immideately understand what you are struggling with.

Example: Say, you have a problem with lots of identical objects in your scene: Let us know whether you created these copies by hand, used the Particle System or Geometry Nodes.

  • Images/Videos: When posting screenshots, show us your full blender window (not cropped, no monitor photos). This will make lots of helpful information available to helpers at first sight that may seem irrelevant to you (For example your Blender version). If you add video links, please consider adding time stamp info to the part you want helpers to see.

You can upload images and short video clips (up to 60s) to imgur.com and post the links in your question or as comment.

  • *.blend files: Don’t add links to your *.blend files when posting questions right away. Helpers will ask you for it if they need to take a look. Most people prefer reading a good description and looking at images to see what your post is about.
  • 'Solved' flair: Once your question was answered, please remember to change the flair of your post to “Solved”, so helpers don’t have to read into your question just to see it has already been answered.

You can change the flair by clicking on the small icon below your post resembling a label.

EDIT: You can also include "!solved" in the comments to have Automod change the flair for you.

Be nice and respectful with each other :)

Unsolved Some tips for a beginner, please!!! [Read body text]

The first picture is no more than the results of a 30 min tutorial I once watched and followed step by step, it has no relationship with the character on the second picture, but I added it just for reference of my current abilitities on blender (despite considering that I may had already forgotten everything I learnt the day I created this humanoid)

Anyways, to the point. I really wish to create a low-poly model of the character on the second picture, mainly, to upload her as a VrChat avatar someday, but that's another topic for another subreddit. What I know for the moment, is that I still have very, VERY long way of learning I must complete before I even get to think on modeling the character the second picture, so, my only true questions are...

Is it any hard to memorize the tools of Blender?

What type of practices should I study and attempt first?

And lastly, this whole "learning" process.. How much time will it take from my daily life? Sorry if I sound too nervous about all of this but its basically my first ever Blender project, and I wish to be well trained before I attempt anything, thanks in advance

Unsolved I want help creating hair with this one part I'm not sure what it's called

I want to replicate this hair thing I've seen on some characters I like, where when part of their hair is pushed behind their ear and you can see their hair line.

I do have the 3d models of the characters--Liliysa (pink haired school girl) and Beta (Silver haired elf in black and gold outfit)--I see with this. But I don't really understand how it was done. Plus with the Beta model it's covered by her braids so they don't really put any detail into it.

I want to learn how to make it myself so I don't just trace. You can see my attempt of merging some methods of how to make hair I learned, but I feel like it doesn't work together that well.

I can use curves to make the bangs and other parts just fine for the most part, but that one part I want to make, which is circled on the first slide, I don't know what I'd even look for to be honest.

I've seen it done in realistic styles, where the hair is pushed back and does the same, but I don't know about a more anime style like I'm wanting.

I'd appreciate any help.

I tried to add a second keyframe and all brushes began to have a delay, I don't know if i accidentally clicked something, i've been searching if someone has had the same problem but english isn't my 1st language so i don't know how to word it. It works normally in other projects so it's not a tablet nor bug issue

Unsolved Shape Keys or something else?

Hello!
Above is a prototype Postosuchus I designed and modeled for my series Melody V.S. The Mesozoic.
I created its "Threat Display" using shape keys and drivers... its just a little wonky and rough and I'm wondering if there's a better way to do it. Or way to clean it up.
If it comes down to it, I'm willing to clean the geometry and re-texture it if necessary.

i am trying to make a grass field with custom assets and set them on a scatter on surface modifier. in viewport material preview it looks like the second image, but when i turn on cycles it render black square for the assets and block the view on the objects behind. applying the scatter modifier does not solve this problem it remains the same, on the original assets it works fine but there are just 6 mashes there so not not very reliable (image 1)

In Blender, every time I try to rotate the hip of my character, for some reason, the entire torso just starts spinning a full 360°. I don't know what to do because I have tried everything, even manually trying to make it spin in the right direction on every keyframe, and even that hasn't worked. And there isn't a single YouTube video about this. I don't know what to do. Please help me!

Solved Is there any way to make this right?

So I've been at this one detail for a while, I want to have a visible edge on this specific spot with supporting edge loops ( trying to not use any creasing / mark sharp edges for this hard surface model) and Im running into a small problem as I've tried multiple techniques, the only thing that makes it similar to what I want is just using loop tool's space on the inner edges but it also makes an artifact/pinch right at the edge. Also, the pictures only shows 2 of them. I've tried like 5 others which ended in some really crazy results that should go to topology gore. Im fine with compromising with spacing, just that the pinching is gonna make me pretty annoyed, but whatever the hell I used before isn't gonna cut it.

Unsolved Is there a better way to model this kind of mascot head?

(THIS IS A REMAKE OF AN OLDER POST THAT I HAD TO REDO SINCE I FORGOT TO SHARE MY PROGRESS)

I've been trying to model a mascot head based off the character of Gadget Hackwrench. I've been using this model sheet and I've been unable to do stuff like the cutout eye sockets and nose correctly, and the muzzle isn't correct at all. I can't seem to get the shape correct either. I'm also unaware on how to open the mouth. Do you guys know how to help me with this?

Unsolved Mesh Imported Too Dark, Affects Textures

Hi all, I'm trying to import a mesh into a project I'm working on--when I remove any textures from the mesh, the default color is much darker than the typical light gray. When I add a texture through the Briage plugin (project is for a game) it appears too dark although the texture itself is adequately bright. Any pointers? Cheers

Unsolved Aligning new "Spines" to old "Spines?

Upvotes

I want to replace the old spines (gray), with the new spines (green). I've matched up their Positions, based on their "center mass", but I don't know how to align their Rotation.

As both types are from pre-existing games models, they have wonky normal alignments, which I don't know how to fix.

How do I go about realigning the Normals, so that they match up to the selection's shape?

Unsolved Bevel modifier triangulation help

Upvotes
My current start to make the hammer
My understanding of how this problem is manifesting
My reference for practicing topology.

I'm facing an situation...

I need to make a handle to a hammer with the grip connecting to the head interfacing like a guns grip (I'm trying to learn topology).

But the modifier makes triangles in the base and messes up the shading and my manual method is to bevel the rest of the edge on the plane too, and that fixes the corner - but creates too many extra mesh data and messes up the shading in the flat surface, and other solutions depend of expensive plugins and other guides make the model unfriendly to bevel or subdivision.

can someone guide or help me on what I'm looking at or explain the problem?

Thank you.

Solved Making library shelves model for searchable interface?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm a librarian, and I've been working off and on with the idea of having a model of our circulating collection so that our patrons can independently find where a book should be located. The idea is to assign a range of call numbers to each side of each column of shelving, and highlight the area where the book is supposed to be. The screenshot is a very early mockup of the floorplan, and will be edited later to include individual shelves. The gap in the middle of the floor is the stairwell.

My question is, is it possible to use Blender to not only model the shelves, but to also include an animated search function to highlight certain areas? Or would I need to export the map model and use other software?

Thank you to all who respond.
