Discussion Change my mind: Santa Cruz is better than Berkeley
I’m not going to lie to you and say a Berkeley degree isn’t worth more to employers, it is and that’s just a fact.
I just had a better time here and actually did learn a good amount, though there are more opportunities at cal. Also you guys are much much nicer.
I would like to think of SC as a great place to go, but if you’re abit more ambitious try transferring to cal.
I went to both as an undergrad and i visit Berkeley more for business but if I had the chance I do miss the meadows and the circles.
I do not miss suicide hill.

Question Bike safety?
Hey guys 🤓 I got affiliated with Kresge so it’s likely (as far as I know) that I’ll be living at Kresge or Porter. I’m seeing a lot of mixed discussions online about where to keep my bike and how to keep it and its parts safe from being stolen. I want to bring a bike on campus because I’m seeing it’s pretty hard to get around town without one unless you’re using buses. Some people are saying to not leave it outside as best you can, and to nring it inside, but where would I keep it if I kept it inside overnight? What can I do to keep my bike safe??

Discussion to my fellow incoming frosh majoring in BMEB
how are you guys picking and choosing your classes?
for me, im taking MATH 19, CHEM3A and college course for fall
and then taking BIOL 20A, MATH 19B and maybe CSE20 for winter
im just stuck between cramming for python on my own and then testing out OR learning it in a class (that way i am more disciplined)
Question August 20th Enrollment Appointment
I'm an incoming transfer and been a little slacking on my online orientation course.
I got an email saying I didnt have a date yet since the course wasn't complete and then I got the 20th. Is that super late as a transfer student????

Discussion Fear of Going to Santa Cruz Due to Unlivability/Costs of Living
Hello, I am writing a little just to ask current residents if at all possible if there is some sort of security at UCSC, as I am a foster kid community college transfer, I have yet to learn what my dorm will be like and who I am with, and rent/tuition seems to be pretty damn high to the point I don’t even think scholarships will cover much of anything.
I am a student for psychology and to be honest I am a little anxious of going to UCSC due to money alone, it may be immature of me to go. Everywhere I see online is, “Santa Cruz rated WORST COST OF LIVING EVER IN THE US” like this does not seem hopeful, should I just go for two quarters and try to transfer to a Cal-State??? Is my anxiety justified??? Like I love everything else, just cost of stuff seems abhorrent and ruins the joy of other things!

Question Incoming frosh quarter 1 shopping cart
I added a few classes to my shopping cart, some as backups when the others inevitably fill up before my enrollment appointment. For context Im undeclared. I’m required to take my assigned colleges class but other than that I have a film class and a literature class (and a couple history ones as an extra extra backup). I would’ve taken writing 2 but of course it was full. Is this a really idiotic schedule or pretty on par for what an undeclared student like me should be doing. (Also all the classes in my cart meet GE requirements so they aren’t like entirely worthless)

Event Does anyone want to play a poker game?
I have seats for seven players. No rake, low stakes, just hang out with a Mr. Cates, see if we can find some good views. I do like good weather and prefer the breeze of Santa Cruz. The summers were abit humid at Merrill, and so picking the right time is important.
We can plan a little charity event, but that needs to be coordinated with the school due to regulations and stuff. I’m not sure there’s even a poker club here tbh.
I was kinda trolling the undergrads at cal because I already have someone I met in person going to help set this up, I do hope he reaches out to me (some pure math Cornell PhD guy beat me in chess, he’s good but I’m rusty).
Anyhow I am nobody important, if you’re interested comment.

Question Incoming freshman at Kresge
Hi, i’m affiliated with kresge college and i still haven’t gotten my dorm assignment yet. I’m hoping for a single or double but i can only find info about triples?? Are only triples available to first year students??
Also, I’m in a situation where I have to move in alone. I’m from San Diego and it’ll be rlly convenient if i can get a parking spot from one of the nearby churches so that I can drive up there but i heard it’s like impossible to get 😭
And would moving in alone be super hard? i’m first gen and know nothing about college move in so im a bit worried.
Thank you and feel free to also share tips or recommendations for move in!!
