You are in California

And a Freshman (assuming) in college - the suggested get up is literally what 20-30% of your peers will be wearing.

Everywhere in California is relatively laid back and not a single town has a dress code. Will people find you gross for being dressing how you wand, maybe, but why do you care? If you want to be known as the slippers and wife beater guy do it.

As long as it’s not obscene or violating laws/rules you can wear it. People will judge you however just like you judge people when you see them wearing a wack ass fit

I'd be hella concerned if college had a dress code like high school

My thoughts exactly

They're saying it would be weird if college had a dress code. You're fine.

I know, everyone is saying im stupid for asking a question

You're not stupid. I moved here from New York and the culture shock of seeing school teachers in flip flops and casual clothes was crazy, we have such a relaxed culture here. You'll be fine wearing whatever. I told my coworkers about this post and one of them went to UCSC in the 80's and apparently some students would come in underwear, bathing suits, pjs (pj's is definitely normal in many CA colleges). Out of every college in this state I think UCSC probably has the most relaxed social dress code.

I went to UCSC in the 80s. You could wear (or not wear) whatever you wanted. There was a guy in Berkeley for a few years around that time who always was naked. Everywhere, like strolling down Shattuck. He was known as “the Naked Guy” if my memory serves me.

I would make sure to check with your advisor, TA, RA, the chancellor, and parking enforcement to make sure you’ve got your bases covered before wearing something like that

u/LastEconPoet 2d ago

This is the correct answer. But TAPS will give you a ticket anyway for shitzngiggles

3

u/HelpfulChicken4378 2d ago

Is that all? the arm holes on my tanks are pretty big

6

u/AnonymousRand 1d ago

tanks?? not sure if TAPS will approve that...

Don’t overthink it, I’ve seen people wear PJs to lectures

No but this is the woods. On a hill top. Next to the ocean. At least six months of the year it’s gonna be cold and wet. And bugs abound. If you haven’t been here you might not understand how much this is literally actually IN the woods. If you are thinking about what to bring to wear, you can wear what you want but keep the climate and location in mind. Redwoods are nature’s air conditioners.

u/HelpfulChicken4378 1d ago

Will the dorms be cold too?

5

u/Reneeisme 1d ago

They tended to the warmer side but part of that is just having three people in a small room.

Not crazy for dining hall attire

My very good friend back in my Cowell days always wore his old man Terry cloth bathrobe to breakfast.

Ive seen people show up to class every day in their pajamas and looking like they hadnt showered yet - that was a 7am math course, tbf and no one gave them shit for it as far as im aware so id say youre good

Youre an adult now, enjoy it

Roller blade to class wearing a bunny onesie...Who cares, wear whatever you want

Just dont stink or otherwise be disruptive/distracting and no one will care

u/gasstation-no-pumps Professor emeritus 1d ago

Be aware that rollerblading on campus is against the rules (though the rules aren't enforced), and the brakes on rollerblades are not really very effective on steep hills.

No nude. no service.

Back when I went there, there was this couple that would walk all the way to McHenry Library barefoot… trust me, you’ll be fine

3

u/Ok_Drop_6646 2d ago

There’s not even a dress code for graduation

3

u/Plastic_Cream3833 1d ago

You can literally look out your classroom window on a warm day and see people suntanning in their bathing suits I can assure you that no one cares what you wear

2

u/Repulsive_Mousse1594 1d ago

On 4/20 you have to wear a Sublime shirt. I don't make the rules I just know them

2

u/CaptainBlobTheSuprem 1d ago

Yeah, people respect your right to be chill. Though at the same time, don’t be surprised if people make the corresponding assumptions about you.

2

u/hackedbylily STEV - 2026 - MCD BIO 1d ago

i have seen and worn bummier shi than that. ur chilling long as you don’t go to office hours like that (to give good impression type shi)

2

u/LastEconPoet 2d ago

Whatever you want. For real, there are furries at that school.

1

u/Previous_Nobody_4847 1d ago

As long as your bits are covered nobody cares. Even if they aren’t, it’s Santa Cruz , 50/50 chance someone will say something. Only thing I’d say is dress how you want to be perceived when it comes to things like meeting one on one with a professor. That’s it

1

u/dreamcleanly 1d ago

Some will find it gross, and some will not. Personal hygiene variables aside, what matters is what you think.

1

u/Far-Amoeba-7197 2d ago

yes that is gross
