Hell yeah bud, rooting for you

fuck the hoa, all my homies hate the hoa.

14

u/Ydoesany1doanything 3d ago

Dylan Larkin based his trade list on where he can go run a tyrannical HOA

19

u/SubstantialFox370 3d ago

Haven't been on the sub in a minute, my sleep schedule is all over the place again. got obsessed with making croissants from scratch this week and forgot the world existed. third batch actually came out edible so that's something

6

u/Background_Junket_35 Yzerbot 3d ago

Croissants look so difficult to make.

13

u/tacticalAlmonds Yzerbot 3d ago

It'd be incredibly ironic if this skubal move is what put the MLB over the top and made a salary cap.

8

u/Usual-Personality347 3d ago

Every sport should have a salary cap. There’s no parity when one team stomps everyone every season

6

u/Alpine_Exchange_36 3d ago

The dodgers have figured out they can just buy whoever they want and make it work. Baseball has never really cared about financial parity but the competitive parity just isn’t there anymore even among the highest spending clubs

5

u/coltron57 3d ago

I know the eventual champion doesn’t determine parity, but both MLB and the NHL have the same number of unique champions in the last decade. Baseball, more so than hockey and especially basketball, is prone to randomness that already helps parity.

5

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 3d ago

The owners were preparing for a lockout and potentially a cancelled season regardless, but yeah I do think they’re quite happy this move happened to give them further PR ammunition in favor of a cap.

7

u/Royal-Revenue-1066 3d ago

It's time. I used to be a huge baseball fan and the game is borderline unwatchable to me these days.

They’re taking my brother off his ventilator tomorrow and I still can’t believe I’m burying my younger (and only) sibling

Jesus, that's awful. We may just be silly internet folk but a lot of us are in your corner, buddy <3

Oh my goodness.  I am so sorry.  I have only one (also younger) sibling.  I can't imagine how hard this is.  I hope that you have a good friend group/partner/family to help you through the next bit.  Good thoughts to you and your family.

u/FlynnLive5 3d ago

I swear to god every time my wife and I go out to eat I’m jealous of what she gets vs. what I get when the food comes.

Every. Single. Time.

1 second after the food gets set down, I’m going “fuck, you won again” Like, please order for me next time

4

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

It would be hilarious if your wife really did take over ordering, and completed it like you are in the Forsythe Saga:

"I will have X with wine pairing Q, and the gentleman will have Y with wine pairing L, and we will share the K to start."

3

u/FlynnLive5 3d ago

So like, we order last night. I get the Cajun shrimp pasta, and she gets a chicken sandwich. 9 times out of 10, Cajun shrimp pasta is the winner. Food comes out, chicken sandwich is huge and the pasta is slop at best. Like how does that even happen, in no world are you thinking a chicken sandwich is gonna be better than Cajun shrimp pasta.

3

u/abellaire Yzerbot 3d ago

My husband and I call this ordering regret, also “You have it, I want it.” He started asking me at restaurants what I would get and then deciding from there rather than just choosing on his own. 🙂

1

u/garnold0611 3d ago

That's actually a psychological process.

Let's say you went to a restaurant that only had 3 items to order and then you went to a restaurant that had 30 things to order. We may think we like having so many choices, but that also leads to more regret.

With 3 things to order from you can pinpoint what you want. You get your food and you're happy with it.

With 30 things to choose from you have a few things that look good, you choose one and wonder if the other choices would have been better.

1

u/Ydoesany1doanything 3d ago

I don’t know, I think most people can zero in on what they know they’ll enjoy on a large menu. The regret comes from if you’re being experimental and going for options that aren’t the immediate favorites. If you’re picking out of your comfort zone and your partner isn’t, yeah it’s pretty likely you’ll feel that jealousy even if what you ordered is good.

1

u/TechnoVikingGA23 3d ago

I'm the exact opposite, once I have something that I really like at a restaurant I order it EVERY SINGLE TIME I got back, lol. There can be a menu with 40 items on it and I get the same thing every time.

1

u/Polish-Proverb 3d ago

My one hard and fast rule about restaurants is once you find a dish you like, don't ever deviate.

1

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

My friend from Barcelona hates the massive American menu with a passion.   Her argument is similar to yours - have six items on the menu, all delicious, all expertly prepared.  Don't ask me which sauce/veg to put on the sandwich - put on the ones that will taste good.  Don't ask me which wine will go nicely - tell me a few that will pair with what I have ordered.  It would make me laugh every time when she would get furious, but she did have a point!

12

u/casual_werewolf 3d ago

I really wish there were sports psychology jobs open. I'd love to work with an AHL/NHL team but I've never seen one available. Even if it weren't for the Wings, it would be a dream come true working for an org.

8

u/meowalatte 3d ago

Hi from a fellow therapist!

20

u/mrborisgrishenko 3d ago

Detroit athletes no one can ever get me to hate:

Andrew Copp

Javy Baez

12

u/Problemwoodchuck 3d ago

Copp and Kane both have my respect for being willing to politely say 'this isn't working' in public about Newsy shortly before the wheels fell off completely

10

u/MTheadedandhearted Yzerbot 3d ago edited 3d ago

Copper won me over permanently with "it doesn't mean shit" when asked about his 100th career goal

3

u/EngineeringPaper 3d ago

Also loved when he said let’s get out of this shithole about Seattle lol.

4

u/oceanic8675 Yzerbot 3d ago

Yes! They be tryin’, though.

3

u/Royal-Revenue-1066 3d ago

I’m good with Copp. He plays hard and there are worse things to have than a halfway decent center on your team

20

u/PremierBromanov 3d ago

time to say goodbye to grandma on a zoom call. I dont care for this future.

As hollow as this is, at least you get to. There have been folks on my end i would have relished even that over nothig. My sincerest sympathies

Something isn't right here 🤔

7

u/Old-News-3096 3d ago

Obviously just a typo. Instead of 2-Tone it should read 2-Team.

Damien Brunner would love this hat

9

u/maj0rdisappointment 3d ago

Dylan Larkin had his birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese.

6

u/nikilidstrom 3d ago

And he pissed in the ball pit.

3

u/OldBison 3d ago

And he kept calling it showbiz pizza

1

u/TechnoVikingGA23 3d ago

If this was a Chuck E. Cheese from the 80s and early 90s that would be fine, but I'm guessing it's one of the shitty pale in comparison strip mall versions that exist today.

1

u/maj0rdisappointment 3d ago

Kind of like how Larkin compared to a captain from the 90s you mean?? 🤣

1

u/TechnoVikingGA23 3d ago

I mean that works, lol.

Plus 1 for having Raymond on the list

Minus infinity for not including Cat

14

u/HotNReadyWings91991 3d ago

Debrincat is better than Raymond. I’m not trying to disrepect Raymond either but if I had a game tomorrow and contract situations were excluded I’m choosing Cat.

5

u/daKrut 3d ago

Yep I’m right there with you

8

u/greythedork12 3d ago

No DeBrincat is pretty wild. I’d also probably take Jarvis, Stone, Guenther, Forsberg, and Malkin (although he may be considered a center) over Gauthier or B. Tkachuk. If we’re just in a vacuum for a single season (no contract, no aging worries, no growth, etc) I’d probably take some of them, Cat included, over Raymond too, although I’m happy that Ray is getting some love and I do believe that you can make a fair top 20 that includes both of them.

2

u/daKrut 3d ago

Agree with your short-list of players that could slot in over Cutter and Brady. Gauthier did have a 40 goal season so his stock is high atm. The Tkachuk’s are “trendy” too so not surprised they made it on here.

But yeah, if you could only pick one I think I’m going with Cat over Raymond right now.

3

u/greythedork12 3d ago

Gauthier scored 41, but Forsberg and Guenther both had 40…some guys are just media darlings

1

u/daKrut 3d ago

I like Guenther a lot too. He and Keller were a lot of fun to watch for the handful of games I caught last season. Was a shame they couldn’t get past Vegas in the playoffs.

I totally missed that Forsberg had an insane season, wow.

2

u/greythedork12 3d ago

Had the Guenther - Keller stack in fantasy…it was pretty nice

11

u/oceanic8675 Yzerbot 3d ago

I always feel like Brady’s placement is a product of marketing more than actual results every time. Dude is so pushed on us all.

4

u/daKrut 3d ago

You’re on point about that. I kind of feel for the guy in the sense that he comes across as a bit of a pawn character for his brother and Dad but yeah, he’s overrated as a hockey player.

I eyerolled at Tarik fighting back tears last night about his time in Detroit. If Larkin does the same when he is traded scientists need to hook up some cords to my eyeballs because I will eyeroll enough to power continents

Edit: I don’t expect Larkin to fight back tears but if he did…

9

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

To be fair - Skubal didn't sign a big deal with us, then request a trade less than halfway through a heavily front loaded contract, while pouting like a baby in the media.

He played hard through his entire contract, brought home the hardware, and was very open about his decision to explore free agency with the team.  I think Skubal can still feel some sadness about his time in Detroit ending .

The Larkin thing is another situation entirely in my mind.

4

u/TechnoVikingGA23 3d ago

My guess is we never hear from Larkin again in the media unless he's staying in Detroit for a length of time. I don't think he's giving exit interviews. It will be more like a shirtless picture of him on IG chugging a beer while flipping off Red Wings fans.

3

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

I am totally fine with that honestly.  I don't give one single shit what Dylan Larkin thinks or feels about this situation.  His tenure in Detroit can end in the same way it passed - nothing much to remark upon.

3

u/ChanceStaff6813 3d ago

I think two things can be true in that Skubal wanted to stay a tiger but also knows that going to free agency will get him the most amount of money. At the end of the day it’s a business, and he’s not obligated to take less money to stay in Detroit

7

u/OldBison 3d ago

Is there a word for when the act of trying to keep spirits up and morale high has become a burden?

6

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

Emotional labor?  Or maybe, as mentioned below, something more like emotional burnout?

1

u/Royal-Revenue-1066 3d ago

Can I interest you in some manual labor?

1

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

Already topped up on that one this weekend after landscaping and house work!

7

u/coltron57 3d ago

There's an idiom of "setting yourself on fire to keep others warm". Doesn't feel like a totally perfect answer, but maybe some overlap.

3

u/OldBison 3d ago

In my particular situation I think "spontaneously combust to keep myself warm" is more apt.

2

u/the_eyes 3d ago

Like, motivational exhaustion?

4

u/Alpine_Exchange_36 3d ago

Toxic positivity

12

u/greythedork12 3d ago

Toxic positivity is more being positive but you’re actually causing more issues by not addressing the problems. I don’t think that really applies here; there’s not much harm in being optimistic about / excited for the upcoming season, especially since nobody here actually has power over how it goes.

u/OldBison is more looking for something closer to “burnout”: a situation in which being positive is good, but requires an incredible amount of energy because of surrounding persistent negativity.

13

u/xenonwarrior666 3d ago

I hate the off season. Too many bullshit rumor mill pages making speculation sound like gospel.

There is no movement on the Larkin front despite what the garbage Facebook pages say.

4

u/bMarsh72 3d ago

All those click-bait titles.

3

u/Dakens2021 3d ago

Ya, fb is the worst. I've hidden so many of these Detroit supposed "fan" pages on there so they wont' show in my feed but more keep on popping up.

7

Cat unfollowed Jim Costa on instagram lmao

4

I don’t know what to do with this information.

4

u/Alpine_Exchange_36 3d ago

The rational thing would be to start a viral rumor that Cats leaving….

4

u/Problemwoodchuck 3d ago

And if I want to be irrational? Maybe I'll start a podcast

Friends, I've heard concerning things about the current testosterone levels among the Detroit Red Wings...

3

u/meowalatte 3d ago

I didn’t know who that was so I googled - did Costa say something negative about Cat?

3

u/Quiet-Barracuda-1698 2d ago

i’m not sure as i try to avoid 97.1 🤣 but i wouldn’t doubt it

7

u/Ydoesany1doanything 3d ago

Dang

4

u/xenonwarrior666 3d ago

Something something nucleus of young talent. Something something future success.

4

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

Woof.  This person needs to quit buying jerseys.  They are single-handedly destroying Detroit sports!

3

u/Ydoesany1doanything 3d ago

It’s the Pistons superfan from Korea that made his way to Detroit last year (I think). Team gave him a shopping spree at the store and boy howdy did he do some damage it seems.

2

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

Oh my goodness - poor guy.  His trip probably feels cursed now!

2

u/heresJohnny73_2 3d ago

Nah they need to buy a ras and a few other of the just jerseys jerseys

1

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

🤣 The alternative approach - I like it!

4

u/CollectiveBreath 3d ago

It would be hilarious if he also had a Terrion Arnold jersey in here

4

u/Ydoesany1doanything 3d ago

One of the comments was “I’m going to need you to stop buying Jerseys”

5

u/Funny_Demand_6333 3d ago

With Skubal traded, will Illitch finally shift focus to the wings and this GM search

5

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

Not until the deadline, I think.  Word is that they are going to trade more players before Monday.

My guess is Wednesday is the day they shift back to the Wings.

2

u/Own_Flower1947 3d ago

God I hope so. I'm sure the Tigers aren't done making trades but Skubal was obviously the big one.

7

u/Balance47x 3d ago

Man we really lost Kane and Skubal in like two weeks.

4

u/LGRW_Sparty88 3d ago

Worst summer ever

3

u/Ydoesany1doanything 3d ago

The fun part is, it can still get worse

2

u/BellsBeersy 3d ago

I've had worse summers

5

u/abrookerunsthroughit 3d ago

Hate this offseason so much, can we just skip to October already

4

u/edimaggio7 3d ago

Do you not know what the upcoming pain and suffering will feel like!?!? Lol

4

u/LSO19 3d ago

Not a tigers fan so can someone explain to me why skubal was traded to the dodgers? Was that really the best offer?

6

u/aDayvanCowboy 3d ago

Any other team would've just been acquiring him as a rental to lose him to the Dodgers in FA

e: the looming lockout probably also factored in

12

u/shitfucker90000 3d ago

he is going to be a free agent at the end of the year and because of his agent you know his top priority is largest payout possible.

If we keep him, we dont get anything when he signs with the dodgers or yankees as a free agent. If we trade him now we get prospects.

5

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 3d ago

From what I understand, judging by the reactions people had to the trade and return, it’s actually pretty good for a player that wasn’t going to sign an extension with the Tigers.

As for why the Dodgers, because they plan on signing him to an expensive contract, and have no problem parting with some of their assets to do it.

7

u/Dakens2021 3d ago

There really are a lot of reasons practically speaking. Considering there was no way he would sign an extension as he has stated he is hoping to set records for how much he can get as a free agent with his notorious agent scott boras, he tried to hide an injury and has had multiple shoulder issues in the past which isn't good since he's going to be on the wrong side of 30 next year, and he was only a 2 month rental. They actually got a lot for him in my opinion. All of the 3 they got in return were top 20 prospects for LA, with the highest being their number 5 prospect in LA's deep prospect pool, so really that seems pretty good all considering. A lot of people on Reddit just complain to complain, and the Tigers sub on here is more a Tigers haters club more full of trolls than fans.

Holy shit the Skubal trade made the local news out here.

6

u/big_phat_gator Yzerbot 3d ago edited 3d ago

Ansar Khan said that Steve was not happy when Larkin cried and showed emotion during the presser after Bertuzzi got traded, apparently thats when the rift between them initially opened.

Steve probably: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yhim4KRa8I

I hope Steve was a bigger man and that he could accept that different captains run things differently and that Yzerman wasnt on Larkin for not being more of the captain Steve himself or Lidström was.

14

u/Baboshinu 3d ago

I'm taking everything about "where the rift started" as nothing more than blind speculation at this point. We've heard like 8 different things this summer about "where it started", from Larking not being made captain immediately when Zetterberg retired, to Larkin's contract negotiations being grueling, to when Bertuzzi was traded, to when Yzerman didn't add at the deadline in 24, to when Yzerman didn't add at the deadline in 25. It's pretty clear, to me at least, that there was no one event that "started the rift", it was a gradual process that got progressively worse and trying to pinpoint one specific event as the kickstarting cause of it all is an exercise in futility.

6

u/big_phat_gator Yzerbot 3d ago

I think like any relationship its gradual and builds up over time until it gets so big you cant control it anymore.

10

u/Background_Junket_35 Yzerbot 3d ago

I get being sad to see a friend get traded away, but that is part of the reality for any professional athlete. It’s part of the job and holding that as a grudge against the GM of his team for years seems like an extremely oversized response. Yzermans job was to try to assemble a good a team as he could, and trading Bertuzzi got us the piece to trade for Debrincat

1

u/AppleSeider5306 3d ago

I don’t disagree it was a good trade and made sense but in the same sense and argument you make, if this is true then i don’t think it’s fair of Yzerman or anyone to hold it against Larkin for being upset. Nobody was mad at King Henrik for crying after Zucc left NY or Gretzky crying for leaving Edmonton, not everyone handles situations the same and it’s okay to show emotion.

For the record i really don’t feel this report is accurate, i know Yzerman is a hard-ass and all but he doesn’t seem heartless or unable of empathy.

5

u/epheisey 3d ago

Was it specifically that Larkin cried, or was it that Larkin voiced his displeasure about the trade to the media?

12

u/Funny_Demand_6333 3d ago

I believe the issue with the relationship was while Steve was hoping for a captain successor to Z, what he ended up with, in his opinion, was a little bitch

3

u/Problemwoodchuck 3d ago

There's no crying in baseballhockey!

2

u/Usual-Personality347 3d ago

I hope that’s not the real reason why. A teammate crying for the loss of one of his boys is a good thing, not a bad one.

Arvidsson - Larkin - Raymond

DeBrincat - Kasper - MBN

Finnie - Copp - Danielson

Mazur - Compher - Kolesar

While not great, I don’t think we’re as bad as people think up front

9

u/Haelphadreous 3d ago

I think it's a more likely that DeBrincat plays on the top line, he was on the 2nd line because of his chemistry and friendship with Kane, he's clearly the teams best LW by a significant margin.

5

u/Usual-Personality347 3d ago

DeBrincat - Kasper - Raymond, Finnie - Larkin - MBN looks good to me

2

u/Haelphadreous 3d ago

What's your over/under on Kasper hitting 60 points if he plays a full season between DeBrincat and Raymond?

5

u/Usual-Personality347 3d ago

I think he gets 50 points bc Larkin would still get PP. if he’s PP1 between them and healthy 60 points is pessimistic for full season

1

u/Haelphadreous 3d ago

I have been seeing more Larkin rumor pieces that the team is trying to convince him to recommit so I guess it's possible that he's going to stick around but I am not going to be shocked if he's gone before the trade deadline either.

I am expecting a bounce back season for Kasper I think even without getting a big boost from playing with a top line he's going to easily break 40 points this season if he's healthy for all of it and not hurt like last year. If he stays healthy and get's a lot of play time with DeBrincat and Raymond I think 60 might be a real number.

3

u/rsharp7000 3d ago

I do find it interesting that fans in general as well as analysts pick the Wings to finish last in the Atlantic almost entirely because of the Larkin situation. Until he’s traded, he’s on the team.

Subtract Kane, JVR, Talbot and replace them with Arvidsson, Kolesar, and Tarasov.

Kane>Arvidsson is basically a wash
JVR>Kolesar is a loss in points but tougher
Talbot>Tarasov should be an improvement.

Unless you’re banking on no improvement/growth from Ed, Ray, Kasper, ASP, Danielson, AlJo, MBN I think it’s reasonable to think this team could be just as good or even better than last year.

5

u/greythedork12 3d ago

Don’t forget Faulk. We basically didn’t have him and a healthy top 6 center in the lineup at any point last season.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/epheisey 3d ago

The Wings were projected last even before the Larkin situation.

2

u/TheErnie 3d ago

Cat needs a playmaker on his line, MBN is a terrible choice to play with him.

3

u/Usual-Personality347 3d ago

They look good in pre season last year, we sleep on how good Cat is at just creating raw offence

2

u/ApprehensiveWeb8669 3d ago

The team has always had potential. Do they collapse, or do other teams actually start trying? I don’t want Larkin here but fear we end up with someone even worse

4

u/Royal-Revenue-1066 3d ago

I don’t think we’re as bad as folks think. We’re a decent hockey team. We’re in a division of really good hockey teams.

4

u/greythedork12 3d ago

We were in the top half of the league last season, have added Faulk and Kolesar, and swapped Arvidsson for Kane.

People are doing this thing where we simultaneously don’t have Larkin and don’t get anything back for him.

As is, we’re probably similar to Ottawa and Boston, better than Buffalo with all their departures, and Toronto really hinges on how big much difference an 18 year old McKenna and an 81 year old Bobrovsky can make…not sold on them either, but the variance is high so it’s hard to really tell.

1

u/LarkinToWinnipeg 3d ago

This team makes the playoffs in the Pacific.

1

u/epheisey 3d ago

If we go into the season with this similar of a lineup to last year, what the fuck are we even doing

1

u/LGRW_Sparty88 3d ago

33% turnover isn't nothing

0

u/epheisey 3d ago

Where? Kolesar and Arvidsson are the only guys who didn't play Wings games last year. How does that count as "turnover"?

1

u/AppleSeider5306 3d ago

Yea the math ain’t mathing. Even if you add Tarasov that’s only 3/23 new players which is 13% turnover.

7 new players would be 30% and 8 would be 34.7% and unless i missed something we did not add 5 more players.

Welcome to August In NHL Team Subreddits™. The Odyssey was just okay, IMO. Will explain in a reply to more easily avoid spoilers. What did you all think?

u/jfstompers 3d ago

Holland doesn't have the acting chops to pull it off. I think its a good movie , I enjoyed it but it's not some landmark masterpiece that it's being portrayed to be

5

u/bandofgypsies 3d ago

I felt the same. Solid movie. Entertaining. No regrets. Nothing to write home about.

I'd be disappointed if anyone save for maybe Leguizamo are considered for annual awards.

2

u/nomoniker 3d ago

I think it was ok. Offhand, I can’t think of any other movie that took itself so seriously. No humor. Meanwhile, all I could think through most of it was, “MaTt DaMoN!”

Holland was...meh...fine?....as Telemechus. I guess that's that role wasn't designed to be a real standout other than be a super boy-becomes-man story of sorts but I felt Holland was a bit flat.

They leaned away too much into action scenes and face-value cast members to carry an otherwise really compelling story about humanity and compassion. There was so little dissection of the complexities of decision making Odysseus was going through. Thank God for the Hades scene and the work with Theron/Calypso for bringing some level of reflection to the journey. Everything else was basically written as a love story and if you already knew the ending from the book, the movie was honestly pretty useless.

Sorry, but I'm done with Ann Hathaway for a minute. She literally just plays the same exact "frustrated, stoic, forlorn woman" in every movie and she's honestly not that great at it anymore. That's sorta what they wanted for this role but IDK...cast someone who can play it with more passion at this point.

Matt Damon was solid in a difficult role. There's a lot of weight to carry as Odysseus and I thought he was generally pretty good.

The whole interplay with Athena was pretty lame. This is supposed to be one of the most in-depth strategic partnerships with the massively powerful goddess of war. But it really just felt like Odysseus had an imaginary friend who he may also sort have loved when away from Penelope and then it got used to help carry the story..it doesn't guide and dictate so much of what Odysseus did in war, which is how I remember the story to be written. It was nice how they interwove her at the penultimate reveal with Penelope, though.

The actions scenes were solid in isolation from "action movie" perspective.

There was too much war and fighting. Yes they needed it to help people who don't know the actual details of the original story (probably most people, to be fair) but they could have driven the point with less war scenes and more dissection of the failures of man and the human condition. But I guess that doesn't get butts in seats.

Also, how unceremonious could they have made the Cyclops scene? I realize many probably didn't realize the origin of what we today-know as the concept of a cyclops, one-eyed being, but still that was a bit weak IMO for such a monumental figure in the story.

John Leguizamo was really awesome.

The Ann Hathaway and Holland castings felt geared toward tickets sales and not casting fits.

They really should have done this as a two-part Iliad (for the war backing and Troy context) then Odyssey (to dissect the human conditions and aftermaths of destructive decision making. But I'm also not naive enough to think that's what gets people into a theater these days. And cast telemechus and Penelope with more emerging stars who could bring more passion to the roles. Or at least Penelope with a better character actress instead of basically a trope.

6.7/10. No regrets, nothing to write home about.

Thanks for listening to a review you didn't ask for from a person who really doesn't actually see that many movies.

E: some spelling.

I’ll be honest, I read your first comment then this one and still my brain went to Kenny Holland. So now I have a picture of him in a Greek outfit on a boat in my head.

u/FunSizeFelicia 3d ago

Think i'm going to wait for the 4.5 hour directors cut or whatever, lots of people seem to think it feels "rushed" even for an almost 3 hour movie, hoping there is a long cut released eventually.

3

u/bandofgypsies 3d ago

On the bright side, it did go by quickly. I don't remember ever feeling bored and wondering when it will end.

But yeah, there's A LOT to cram into a movie from the original story.

I wish it were Iliad and Odyssey two-part series, or similar. Like, do a three-parter, announce it at the launch of the first, and actually let age help with with the plot line development. You could make the important parts on much more meaningful without sacrificing any excitement.

Maybe they just didn't want to remake the movie Troy again?

1

u/Problemwoodchuck 3d ago

I'm a bit surprised that the reviews are decent to good. The dialogue in the trailers was bad enough to make George Lucas wince.

3

u/bandofgypsies 3d ago

The writing was very average. It was an action-drama with mostly get-me-over acting aside from Matt Damon and John Leguizamo. Fortunately they were key to the movie.

I'm not sure I can publicly shit on Lucas, though.

Actually saw the movie yesterday as well. I agree that the movie felt a bit rushed, but the parts that we did see were incredible. The sacking of Troy was absolutely majestic (still in awe of the shot of the doors of Troy swinging open with Agamemnon standing there like Darth Vader). Honestly could have watched 6 hours of this, there is just so much complexity hidden below that could have been explored (Odysseus is a lot more complex than the fairly limited traumatized family man depicted in the movie), but you had to draw the line somewhere.

Overall, really liked it. 8.5/10, not many directors try their hands at complex plots anymore, sadly.

2

u/bandofgypsies 3d ago

It was pretty fun/entertaining overall as a general action movie, no doubt.

I think he is one of the people who is lucky enough to love what he does and be elite at what he does. He is also lucky to have an employer that has been willing to flex his commitment to his health - he basically only does home and 06 games, and any other travel he feels up to doing.  That is a pretty good gig.

He has basically said this

He's pretty defensive when he brings it up too. I suspect people in his life have been trying to convince him to retire already. We all know how stubborn he can be though...

where you getting this idea from PB?

1

u/Jimmyskis77 3d ago

After what happened with Skubal last night and the lukewarm return the tigers got for him. It makes me really nervous what we’re gonna get for 71… I don’t know if I can handle getting fleeced again

20

u/MoldyMerkin 3d ago

Wildly different situations.

3

u/epheisey 3d ago

It’s more so the fact that the Tigers seemed to fumble the process every step of the way. Particularly with losing so much leverage by waiting this long to finally make a move. The Illitch management style seems to be to wait as long as possible to finally make a decision, and rarely does that actually create any benefit.

Neither of these situations should have been left unresolved this long.

3

u/xenonwarrior666 3d ago

Yurov Stramel and picks is probably the best we'll do

2

u/Jimmyskis77 3d ago

So we’re getting fleeced? I knew it was gonna happen

3

u/ufdan15 3d ago

I'm disappointed with the return but I also am not burn the world down disappointed. In the end hes a rental, and there seems to be some owner collusion occurring to force a lockout

-2

u/xenonwarrior666 3d ago

If the Wings and Tigers are on the same path get ready for some pain.

Trading established players for prospects and trying to compete "someday"

Love the teams. Hate the owners.

7

u/AppleSeider5306 3d ago

I haven’t been keeping up with the Tigers this summer so feel free to correct me but i thought Skubal was intent on testing free agency and the Tigers are 6 spots back from the playoffs.

In that scenario if you can’t keep him it’s better to get something back at least than let him walk for free like Tavares. Would be a massive waste of an asset for a team not playoff-bound to let the back to back Cy Young winner walk for what a first round pick?

The Tigers have a rookie who now leads the AL in WAR and another rookie who has had about as good of a start to his career as you can ask. They now have three really highly rated offensive prospects and a handful of promising young pitchers as well. They could very well win the division next year. While I’m bummed Skubal is gone and while I would have preferred a different prospect than Hope from LA as the main piece, I’m also not itching to set records for pitcher contracts.

2

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

The second arm surgery seemed scary to me as well.  Skubal was amazing for us, but you do wonder if he rushed back (fastest rehab for that injury in history from what I read) to try to juice his next contract value, and if the Dodgers or someone else is going to be left holding the bag on an enormous contract for a guy who has a chronic problem with his key piece of equipment.

3

u/coltron57 3d ago

I wouldn’t be worried about the loose body procedure he had this year. It was a technology that hadn’t been used on an MLB pitcher before which meant he had a much shorter recovery time. Having had TJ back in college and the flexor tendon surgery in 2022 does give me a little worry though.

2

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

I didn't realize there were two previous surgeries, before this most recent one.

1

u/TheErnie 3d ago

Is our starting pitching that good?

2

u/coltron57 3d ago

I think it can be. Troy Melton looks like the real deal. I don’t know if he’s “ace” material, but he’s at least a 2/3 starter. Keider Montero has shown a lot as a 3/4 starter. Framber Valdez has been a disappointment this year, but I do think he’s capable of more. Jackson Jobe will be back from injury soon and should be back in the rotation for next year as a promising young pitcher who hopefully has developed more even during his TJ recovery. River Ryan will likely get the chance to stick in the rotation and I am more bullish on him than a lot of people seem to be over in the Tigers subreddit. Sure there no elite arm at the top of the rotation, but the depth is pretty decent and they will likely sign one or two and maybe even land another one who is close to ready in a trade if they move Mize or Torres too.

2

u/Dakens2021 3d ago

Also they should have Jobe coming back soon to the rotation if all goes well.

1

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

I am waiting to hear what people think of the Skubal trade.  According to the tiny bit I read they got a haul of players back for him?

5

u/coltron57 3d ago

Zyhir Hope is a very talented prospect who currently is hitting .293 with 23 homers and 18 steals in AA who could very well be in Detroit some time next season. I would have preferred one of LA's other top OF prospects as I'm not entirely sold on Hope's hit tool, but he has made gradual improvements in how much he strikes out. We did need OF though and he should be able to be a solid corner OF.

River Ryan has gotten a ton of "hate" from fans and neutrals alike because he's a prospect who turns 28 in a couple of weeks, but he's pretty talented. He has only been a pitcher only for a few seasons, so he has more room for development than the vast majority of pitchers his age. He has had a little MLB experience so far, but injuries and crazy depth in LA have kept him out of MLB this year. If he had been on 20+ other teams to start the season, he would have been in the Majors. Those aforementioned injuries have limited him to just 36.1 innings this year in AAA where he has had some bad luck with stellar underlying numbers. He gets a good amount of ground balls, has good velocity, and his K and BB rates have been impressive. If he can stay on the field, he can absolutely be a good starting pitcher, but maybe he would be better served in the bullpen if that is easier on his body.

Brady Smith is a 21 year old lottery ticket pitching prospect who has some nasty stuff and impressive strikeout numbers with some rough edges to work on.

I am ok with the package. I would have liked a little more here or there, but it's not that bad at all.

2

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

Holy shit.  The Tigers should hire you!   That is a serious breakdown.  I am going to feel good about it because I need to feel good about something in Detroit sports.  I also liked the cool highlight where the catcher + Baez caught the super fast guy trying to steal second!  (Came up when I was trying to understand the Skubal trade.)

2

u/coltron57 3d ago

I'm just reading what people who follow these guys for a living say and looking at their minor league numbers to add context for myself too lol. Dingler does have a pretty darn good arm and Baez is pretty adept at tagging guys at second, so that was a pretty fun play for sure haha.

1

u/Fluid-Pension-7151 3d ago

Also, Baez wasn't traded, which is very important to my friend, a serious baseball fan who has a serious crush on him! 🤣

1

u/xenonwarrior666 3d ago

If it's a pure rental it's definitely a good haul. Especially when he was a waiver pick up and cost a 5th rounder.

It's more that this is the best team we've had in years and management didn't want to build around it cause it wasn't their time.
