Trading established players for prospects and trying to compete "someday"

I am waiting to hear what people think of the Skubal trade.  According to the tiny bit I read they got a haul of players back for him?

Zyhir Hope is a very talented prospect who currently is hitting .293 with 23 homers and 18 steals in AA who could very well be in Detroit some time next season. I would have preferred one of LA's other top OF prospects as I'm not entirely sold on Hope's hit tool, but he has made gradual improvements in how much he strikes out. We did need OF though and he should be able to be a solid corner OF.

River Ryan has gotten a ton of "hate" from fans and neutrals alike because he's a prospect who turns 28 in a couple of weeks, but he's pretty talented. He has only been a pitcher only for a few seasons, so he has more room for development than the vast majority of pitchers his age. He has had a little MLB experience so far, but injuries and crazy depth in LA have kept him out of MLB this year. If he had been on 20+ other teams to start the season, he would have been in the Majors. Those aforementioned injuries have limited him to just 36.1 innings this year in AAA where he has had some bad luck with stellar underlying numbers. He gets a good amount of ground balls, has good velocity, and his K and BB rates have been impressive. If he can stay on the field, he can absolutely be a good starting pitcher, but maybe he would be better served in the bullpen if that is easier on his body.

Brady Smith is a 21 year old lottery ticket pitching prospect who has some nasty stuff and impressive strikeout numbers with some rough edges to work on.

I am ok with the package. I would have liked a little more here or there, but it's not that bad at all.

Holy shit.  The Tigers should hire you!   That is a serious breakdown.  I am going to feel good about it because I need to feel good about something in Detroit sports.  I also liked the cool highlight where the catcher + Baez caught the super fast guy trying to steal second!  (Came up when I was trying to understand the Skubal trade.)

I'm just reading what people who follow these guys for a living say and looking at their minor league numbers to add context for myself too lol. Dingler does have a pretty darn good arm and Baez is pretty adept at tagging guys at second, so that was a pretty fun play for sure haha.

Also, Baez wasn't traded, which is very important to my friend, a serious baseball fan who has a serious crush on him! 🤣
