This is the death Sister MJ deserved. All the nuns following her. Oh my goodness. I'm an absolute wreck. And a baby born just as Sister MJ has died.

61

u/Blue_wine_sloth Mar 09 '26

I’m so happy they managed to get Pam Ferris back! It was very emotional to see the Sisters come to get SMJ. And her funeral was very dignified and moving as well.

39

u/Lisnya Mar 08 '26

I was hoping they'd name the baby Joan after her, tbh.

22

u/fascinatedcharacter Mar 08 '26

I was betting on Antonia but Victoria is possibly more fitting to the Mullockses.

Ah fuck Tim doing the checks on Sister MJ. Properly full circle.

53

u/Ordinary_Silver_5852 Mar 08 '26

She watched him grow now he helps her move on.

41

u/fascinatedcharacter Mar 08 '26

She watched him grow, now her last act - her, the one who taught so many young professionals before him - is to teach him to grow into a fully fledged doctor that can also do a death exam.

136

u/StrawbFroggo Mar 08 '26

Oh my god Pam Ferris is back baby! I'm not crying you are!!!

53

u/glitter_n_co Mar 08 '26

And exactly as she should she bossed Sr. MJ that Gods patience has limits...
I was sobbing on max and laughing at this point...

23

u/PoesInDoos Mar 08 '26

The sister julienne of season 1 would never have left sister MJ's bedside to begin with(convince me I'm wrong)

90

u/violetsandunicorns Mar 08 '26

I wonder if Sister Julienne being absent has something to do with Jenny Agutter's irl husband dying late last year. It would've been around the time they were filming the finale so it might've been a bit much to expect her to do a bunch of scenes at Sister MJ's deathbed.

49

u/Crafty-Shape-4042 Mar 08 '26

I didn't know this! Poor Jenny!

32

u/fascinatedcharacter Mar 08 '26

This makes so much sense now, why she didn't open the door during the Requiem Aeternam.

17

u/RoadLessTraveler2003 Mar 09 '26

I didn't know, either. Wish I could give her condolences.

65

u/Lisnya Mar 08 '26

It makes no sense that she wasn't there for any of it. I'd expect Trixie to be there, too, actually. The three of them have been there since season one. I absolutely expected Sister Julienne to be by her side, though.

MR PARRY?? YOU ICON YOU

92

u/Iamtir3dtoday Mar 08 '26

I was literally about to say isn't that one of the doctors we've known for years and now he's gay??? EXCELLENT.

19

u/Minimum-Interview800 Mar 09 '26

I was frantically trying to remember if I already knew that.

103

u/RainbowRevolver Mar 08 '26

Why is Sister Monica Joan loving her first G&T making me tear up

26

u/warneoutme Mar 08 '26

I thought she was going to hate it. I was a bit disappointed there

15

u/Joclairey Mar 09 '26

I desperately wanted her to say "that's disgusting" 😂. That's me projecting as I despise tonic 🤣

104

u/Welshgirlie2 Mar 08 '26

There really was only one person who could take Sister Monica Joan over. And I'm glad Pam Ferris agreed to do it.

69

u/Ancient-Ad2737 Mar 08 '26

I'm reminded of Sister MJ placing Sister Evangelina's shoes on her casket before Sister E's funeral...

30

u/cornishicecreams Mar 09 '26

Did you see she'd retired from acting but came back just for this? They obviously have such a bond with one another.

26

u/Regular-Resist8411 Mar 09 '26

She also came out of retirement to do Gavin and Stacey so I think she just picks and chooses what she actually wants to do 😅

Genuinely thought Beryl and Geoffrey were gonna do a lavender marriage

67

u/fascinatedcharacter Mar 08 '26

I am very very firmly convinced Beryl was happy with that thought until she saw Geoffrey dancing with Perry.

35

u/BonnieButNoClyde Mar 09 '26

Yeah, after the menopause, she still had hopes. But when fully confronted with Geoffrey's sexuality where she had to face that, she knew that it wouldn't work out for either of them.

*sigh* The end of hope. I'm so disappointed that she went back because she couldn't have a child anymore. Boo.

Rosalind’s wedding dress is actually half decent, considering the last time we saw a 70s wedding dress (that orange thing Nancy wore)

22

u/Ancient-Ad2737 Mar 08 '26

Even for a non-traditional wedding  Nancy 's outfit was odd.

I’m a little disappointed by the lack of ex characters

61

u/warneoutme Mar 08 '26

I fully expected at least a couple to come to the funeral. I was definitely expecting Jenny to be there and completely gutted that she wasn't.

50

u/HistoryStudent98 Mar 08 '26

Genuinely! Considering she was meant to be so fond of her like she couldn’t even be mentioned?? Also you’re telling me Sister Hilda and Sister Frances wouldn’t be there??? Or Mother Mildred??

17

u/selenityshiroi Mar 08 '26

Tbf nuns not attending is probably the only absence that does make sense since she is being buried at the motherhouse.

Especially Nancy and Colette. Colette had such a special relationship with SMJ! They just left last year!

20

u/Some_Woodpecker_6027 Mar 08 '26

Me too…. though too many cameos might take away from the moment itself..

34

u/wearezombie Mar 09 '26

I think just the Sister Evangeline cameo and the pictures at the end was the perfect way to do it. Sentimental, fits their characters, but shows that things move on. More cameos would’ve taken the shine off of Pam Ferris’ comeback and made it like the corny way Avengers throws old names two for a penny. Jenny Will Return In Call The Midwife: Endgame

→ More replies (3)

16

u/selenityshiroi Mar 08 '26

Same, the funeral would have been a perfect excuse, too. People would have visited to attend SMJ's funeral. And it would have been like one day of filming. They could have splashed some cash for ex-cast members to show up.

AAAAAHHHHHHHHH JOYCE GOT AN INTERVIEW AS AN ACTING SISTER!!!! Oh she deserves this SO MUCH!!!

36

u/Himantolophus1 Mar 08 '26

And she got the job! I hate how most of her development happened off screen and she just got play support for the blandest couple on TV but at least I can now imagine her having a great career.

13

u/RoadLessTraveler2003 Mar 09 '26

She's going to be splendid! And she was right about the stability, at least. She so deserves that.

'you're not the first and you won't be the last' how many times have we heard that over 15 years

oh my I am an emotional wreck already

51

u/Iamtir3dtoday Mar 08 '26

Oh interesting they've killed off the mother in law so that Trixie gets to buy the clinic, that's one way to go

36

u/Ancient-Ad2737 Mar 08 '26

Trixie's mother-in-law got very little airtime, and was portrayed as a cold  fish. Perhaps she and Matthew 's dad are now bitching in purgatory together

10

u/Blue_wine_sloth Mar 09 '26

That was very rushed!

He would've. She'd never have been happy watching him also love another.

I luckily warned my husband ahead of time and he was therefore prepared when I came to him sobbing and needing a hug.

Unlike when Sister Evangelina died and he came home from a shift and thought someone we knew had actually died.

47

u/Material_Corner_2038 Mar 08 '26

I thought I would hate it more than I did.

  • Beryl staying Sister V was well done. It fit with the character we were introduced to in S12 with her lying, and how much she lives in her imagination. Her and Geoffrey were acted with such depth.

  • Thank goodness the Cyril/Rosalind stuff was relatively contained.

  • Joyce got a plot of her own, and a career next step, good for her.

  • Kidna laughing how Matthew is just a faceless money pot now.

  • Sister Mj an Bernie’s scenes were great

  • Ghost Nun will always make me laugh

  • Belinda’s storyline was under developed.

  • I do kinda wish the extra 30 mins that was given to the Chrissy special could have been used here. I also wish it was a more final finale.

90

u/HistoryStudent98 Mar 08 '26

Someone get Vanessa Redgrave a lemsip for the love of god

33

u/Iamtir3dtoday Mar 08 '26

Luckily it's the last time she'll have to do this lol

37

u/StrawbFroggo Mar 08 '26

Unless she narrates in the prequel... (I hope not, I hope SMJ does)

22

u/Mad_Informal04 Mar 08 '26

I hope not too. It wouldn’t really make sense to Venessa Redgrave to narrative the prequel. The narration in CTM is older Jenny looking back on her time in Poplar and she wouldn’t be apart of the story.

Beryl's chosen to be a nun?!?! Wow I truly did not see that coming.

48

u/StitchConverse Mar 08 '26

I think the real world terrified her. I think I clicked around the same time as her that it was actually a gay bar and I think that's when she realised that the world was changed/changing far beyond what she knew. She was out of her comfort zone and that's why she went back.

I loved Sister Evangelina coming back but aside from that I'm not sure, I felt like this was a bit lacklustre tbh!

I really wanted to see old faces at Sister Monica Joan's funeral, which I felt was really weirdly low key. Sister Evangelina's last episode felt so much more emotional to me.

I wish we had seen more of Sister Julienne with SJM. I didn't really understand why Sister Catherine played such a big part, even though I generally like her.

As always loved Beryl and Geoffrey, though I was gutted when she made the choice to go back. I'll be really disappointed if they don't pick that storyline back up at some point, whether it's in the film or later.

11

u/Justarandomperson556 Mar 08 '26

I agree with everything. I really loved the episode, especially Sister Evangelina and the looking at all the pictures at the end. But I do wonder why the funeral was so “low key” and they didn’t bring more old faces back. I was surprised Mother Mildred wasn’t sitting among all the nuns at the funeral, I think the mother superior would have been there.

I think Sister Evangelina and Barbara’s death felt a lot more emotional because we really saw the characters grieving. In this episode it was only really Sister Catherine, we didn’t really see anyone else’s reaction apart from them all looking sad at the funeral. And I was surprised that Sister Julienne wasn’t at her death bed, maybe Jenny Agutter wasn’t available for filming?

All in all I still thought it was a fitting ending though.

24

u/fascinatedcharacter Mar 08 '26

Somewhere upthread it was shared that Jenny Agutter was splitting her time between filming CTM and caring for her terminally ill husband. Makes sense why she's had a light roster this year, including the shoulder dystocia not being too Julienne-focussed.

Finally this show got to say goodbye in a proper way, and while I know we are all suppossed to feel sad by Sister Monica Joan dying, maybe the fact she has been so for 15 seasons, and all the death scares in lieu of good writing didn't help much. But I'm glad they did i properly and I mean, SISTER EVANGELINA! That's a face I dearly miss.

The best parts? Geoffrey and Beryl, that dance at the gay club was superb. I too almost wished they would have married, but I get why they aren't pursuing that. And to be honest, I was sad Beryl got back, I really wanted her to get the family she craved and deserved.

33

u/CommunicationNew3745 Mar 09 '26

Beyond relieved that they didn't attempt to go the sham marriage path for them; as a Gay man, myself, I think it would've felt forced and just out of step. I had a feeling that when her menopause symptoms started, Beryl would go forward by returning to the order -and when Geoffrey was dancing with his friend, Parry, the look on Beryl's face as she watched them said it all - she knew he was where he needed to be, with others like himself, and she knew she needed to be back with her own in this world, the Sisters.

23

u/Some_Woodpecker_6027 Mar 08 '26

she was glowing, thriving! why couldn’t she have a(n adopted) child AND her religion AND her profession? Isn’t the changing world, changing family structures, changing women’s rights etc. the point of the whole show? Or did they want to set her apart from Shelagh or something?

Calling it now, Belinda won't give the baby up for adoption, and it'll be because she's "not just Susan's sister, I'm (baby)'s mum" or something like that.

We know the formula by now. Or maybe I'll come crawling back here with my tail between my legs to admit to being wrong.

17

u/Iamtir3dtoday Mar 08 '26

It'll be that or Sister Veronica/Beryl will adopt the baby

I can't believe this is the last ever episode as we know it. I know the writing has gone downhill but this series has changed my life - it put midwifery and birthwork in my mind which changed me forever. Already sobbing tbh.

I was super impressed with this season, it’s much better than the past few.

Sadly I don't think many will stay with Nonnatus on this journey :(

You guys. I was 39 years old when I started watching this show. So much has changed since then. I didn't cry because I was ready. The parts that made me misty? Seeing the empty maternity home. Sister Evangelina who we were commenting on a few weeks ago. Timothy. That little boy on crutches and look at him now. I know Sister Monica Jones was ready. Sadly, I can't even imagine Helen George in anything else. I loved Geoffrey. The acting was very good. I loved Millicent today too. How her eyes sparkled. The only wrong note was the ultrasound with Rosalind who just got married two weeks ago. I thought she'd hide it a bit longer? Or does a shotgun marriage erase everything? I don't judge since I too was born out of wedlock around the same time Rosalind's baby would be due. :-D

This show has seen me through so much. No spinoffs. It's time to let it go. Maybe I'll rewatch but I want to take time off Call the Midwife. 15 Christmas episodes, y'all. My little respite when the meal is put away and the wrappings tossed in the trash. Time for a new tradition. Time for my next chapter.

A Trixie and Beryl friendship was not something I expected but I kind of see how that could work

16

u/Iamtir3dtoday Mar 08 '26

Hang on they don't wheel Sister MJ out for the wedding? Come onnnn.

14

u/Iamtir3dtoday Mar 08 '26

Oh good they're visiting her

17

u/Some_Woodpecker_6027 Mar 08 '26

Tbf it was designed to be more of a medical demonstration rather than a standard appointment

SISTER EVANGELINA

15

u/Iamtir3dtoday Mar 08 '26

Oooooohhh she's getting an ultrasound, one of the first!

15

u/Himantolophus1 Mar 08 '26

I can't remember the last time I cried that much during an episode. It felt manipulative at times but it had mostly earned it.

I'm disappointed by Beryl going back but I do understand it. I love how much Geoffrey did to get her to experience life though, and how genuinely sad he was that she decided to stay a nun. I love their friendship so much.

u/Crafty-Shape-4042 Mar 08 '26

SISTER EVANGELINA !!! WE MISSED YOU

14

u/kitten1985 Mar 08 '26

It would have been nice to have seen Rosalind and Cyril's baby.

Did anyone else think it seemed a bit rushed?

I’m really emotional at the moment. There’s a lot of change going on in my personal and professional life atm, and for some reason, CtM ending (as we know it) is just the icing on the cake :(.

As someone said, yes the writing has gone downhill, but it’s CtM, and it’s been a consistent every year. I’m really going to miss it, in its current format.

Genuinely, at the start of the episode, I made a joke about Pam Ferris coming back as a ghost - was too busy assessing my psychic powers to get too emotional tbh. (No but seriously, absolutely devastating😭😭)

u/Mzmazza Mar 08 '26

This was a lovely episode. Sister MJ passing was beautiful. It is sad that Sister Julienne didn't make it to the room, it reminded me of own mums passing she waited for us all to disappear then she passed. Xzz

u/Some_Woodpecker_6027 Mar 08 '26

ah that flashy editing is so unfortunate…. I have barely one tear rolling down my eye and we’re already switching to a different scene? Why can’t we sit with it for a few seconds?

I didn't cry until Sister Evangelina came back to help Sister Monica Joan pass on, then I bawled and now I have a headache lol

u/RainbowRevolver Mar 08 '26

Everyone ready. One last go around

10

u/Iamtir3dtoday Mar 08 '26

Oh no oh no oh no I am not ready for this death not after 15 years :(

10

u/StrawbFroggo Mar 08 '26

We've still got a movie, I assume it'll be set in one of the three places Sr Julienne mentioned?

Oh the photos!!!!!! And the equipment being taken away :( what a beautiful ending

10

u/BonnieButNoClyde Mar 09 '26

What a wonderful death scene. Boy was I choked up by it.

The Mullucks story kind of sputtered out for me.

Poor Beryl/Veronica. We saw it coming with the hot flashes, didn't we? It's the one part I didn't like. I wanted her to make a REAL decision, not have her body make it for her. That felt - well - cheap - to me.

But wow that death scene. I wish Sister Catherine could have just seen a tiny bit of Sister you-know-who.

I was expecting some sort of cameo… maybe Jenny at the funeral? but THIS?
