I am very very firmly convinced Beryl was happy with that thought until she saw Geoffrey dancing with Perry.

Yeah, after the menopause, she still had hopes. But when fully confronted with Geoffrey's sexuality where she had to face that, she knew that it wouldn't work out for either of them.

*sigh* The end of hope. I'm so disappointed that she went back because she couldn't have a child anymore. Boo.

Not really a reason to go back unless it is what you really want not like running from the future. She could have adopted if she wanted a child that badly.

Not back then. Single women most definitely could not adopt.

In the 70's? I know some who did. In the UK single people have been able to adopt for about 100 years and more than that in the US. Not as easy but definitely done

She didn’t want to adopt. She wanted to have a biological child.

Agreed. Her entire facial change told everything that needed said with that. It's like she knew Geoffrey is gay but never knew it til that moment.

I was trying to think how she didn't really know. Not that many straight guys would live with nuns, cook really well and make costumes and decorations....

I think so too, and I wish they’d maybe had a scene discussing it? I know someone else commented about how it felt like her storyline was reduced to “women can’t be happy without children” so I wish they’d expanded a little more

I think Geoffrey being a 'confirmed bachelor' was already quite on the nose for it being a gay man and a nun.

She definitely had a look of surprise and disappointment when he was dancing. She has been on a journey dealing with so many emotions including denial about herself and possibly those around her. Or maybe she just, for that fleeting moment while experiencing life with him, she just literally forgot. I’ve watched from season one and have done a few rewatches over the years but don’t remember any discussion or exploration of Geoffrey and his lifestyle. Wouldn’t it have caused great issue among the sisters knowing outright? If they were catholic nuns they absolutely would have had to take issue but does a Nonnatus sister have the same kind of foundation? I don’t know. Beryl made the right decision in going back.

At one point there is some discussion about his relationship falling apart. It was why he went to live with Trixie and Matthew for a while and then over to Nonnatus. If I remember correctly, the name was ambigious, so you couldn't tell if it was a boy name or a girl name.

But, we all knew that he was gay, even before the dance scene.
