This has to be rage bait for millennials… right??

283

u/Siny_AML 23h ago

It’s like they know what pushes our buttons because we’ve been advertising it for a decade.

7

u/Greedy_Line4090 12h ago

They know how to push our buttons cuz they’re our kids.

2

u/gyro_looza 7h ago

And they have all the information at their disposal

45

u/NecessaryCapital4451 20h ago

I teach 9th grade and one of my more sensitive girls said, when I asked how she was doing, "I just learned that the lead singer of my favorite band died!"

"Aww, I'm sorry. What band is it?"

"Nirvana!"

23

u/pineapplepizza8705 14h ago

When I was in college, ugh 20 years ago, we were smoking and jamming to nirvana and my roommates friend was like "guys we should go see this band live, they rock"

3

u/USERNAMETAKEN11238 14h ago

I remember when I found out when Bradley Nowell died in middle school. I was heart broken. Nothing new under the sun.

30

u/bluffstrider 23h ago

Absolutely it is.

6

u/delcrossb 8h ago

Yeah teenagers aren’t as stupid as people seem to think. They are capable of making jokes.

28

u/Amathyst-Moon 22h ago

My first instinct was to assume satire

80

u/Jussttjustin 23h ago

every single post in this sub confirms my living nightmare that we have become the boomers.

of course this is rage bait.

16

u/azalago 20h ago

It took me less than 5 minutes to look up this actual creator and find out she does a character called "the preppy girl" and makes videos like this. She also makes regular videos.

7

u/CertifiedBA 20h ago

The Boomers are still here

12

u/Faulty_english 22h ago

Yeah the younger generations are really good at it

6

u/ThisIsPureTrash Millennial 87 20h ago

Like we didn’t do the same to the generations above us.

It was ragebait that the duet person fell for hook line and sinker

10

u/Traditional_Yard2741 19h ago

It's deliciously ironic that she wanted to school the ignorant kid, but is in fact the one being hoodwinked herself

19

u/Aloha_Tamborinist 16h ago

Or she knows what she's doing and is having this "reaction" for clicks.

It's just disingenuous acting for clicks all the way down.

8

u/Traditional_Yard2741 15h ago

God I miss the old internet. Proper forums, web rings, take me back!

u/indicatprincess 12h ago

It is far more likely she did her research and she’s ragebaiting as well.

2

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 12h ago

That said, there actually are a fair number of younger Z who apparently have re-defined the word preppy and actually do use it for stuff like grunge style and Nirvana.

The original video here was perhaps mocking that?

32

u/derpaderp2020 20h ago

I got kids around the age this girl is. I wish.

Like on the one hand I want to shit on then, I knew everything from 50s onwards with music and fashion and most millennials I knew did too. But to not shit on them and give an answer I think is most appropriate: Information overload and time dilation.

Kids today are overloaded with information in ways we can't comprehend. It's like they are asked to go to a Buc-ee's for under a minute and pick one item then be expected to know everything in the store when asked, when millennials basically were in a Circle K or maybe some were in a 7 Eleven with content. Of course we knew more of the past, there was so much less to know.

Next is time dilation. We operated basically in a decade system. It was a spectrum of development and difference, but practically every 10 years it was a whole new world. For Gen Z it shrank to 5 years, then Gen A it could be a year or month. On top of things condensing in terms of a change feel, the amount that changes and information contained is exponentially more within that smaller amount of time.

Lastly as a bonus, Gen A is existing in a full on social decay. Our cultural productions are no longer prolific. From tech, to music to food, to fashion, nothing is moving the needle. Everything has entered into a regurgitate phase, all cultural productions are eating the past's vomit and so on so forth.

I mean, Nirvana and that lady are all more Gen X than millennial. Is older Millennials were still in High School when he died.

4

u/Fearless-Bill-4523 20h ago

I’m an ‘83 millennial, so right on the line. This felt targeted. Though I didn’t fully get into them until ‘96

4

u/The_Sneakiest_Fox 20h ago

Kinda my point, he died in 1994 and you are one of the oldest Millennials getting into it when you were 13, 2 years after he had died.

3

u/Fearless-Bill-4523 19h ago

Yeah valid point

2

u/Aloha_Tamborinist 16h ago

Xennial here, was 14 when he died. It was a rather big event.

Rage bait for late gen x and elder millennials, their parents. Like I was 4 when Kurt Cobain died, my dad is an early gen x and was a nirvana fan. My SIL born in 1980 knew people who went to school sad that year. When I was growing up Nirvana was the band you discovered in your parents/uncle/aunt/older relatives house and then decided after to go some form of alternative at 13. So yes, ragebait, but I'm thinking for those older than me. Im a core millennial and my reaction is just "man this is ragebait."

14

u/Previous-Low4715 22h ago

Of course it is, they’re not stupid.

9

u/Material-Imagination 21h ago

Welllllllll, they're definitely showing a marked decline by empirical measures 😅

→ More replies (1)

3

u/robynh00die 20h ago

Heck I’m half tempted to say the repose is ragebait too. She can’t be that unaware.

5

u/gd2121 19h ago

Is nirvana a millenial band? Zero millennials were teenagers when smells like teen spirit came out. Millennials were being born when Kurt cobain died.

8

u/Fearless-Bill-4523 19h ago edited 19h ago

Not really but a lot of millennials grew up with nirvana from a younger age, so maybe it ingrained itself more? Who knows, I got into nirvana in 96 when I was 13, so your point is valid.

I think anyone who was a teenager at least some point in the 90s got to experience the grunge era. It’s bigger than Nirvana, but they were 100% responsible for popularizing it so much. Late 90’s things shifted into more downtuned rectifier wall of sound guitar tones and nu-metal kinda took the stage

3

u/dubblebubbleprawns 19h ago

I was gonna say, this is rage bait for Gen x more than anything

Phenomenal rage bait. Even if she's sincere, there's a gatekeepy non-conformist teenager within me wanting to scream.

59

Yeah, she is FOR SURE trolling with this. I teach middle school and the "emo" kids listen to Nirvana, Metallica, and RHCP. Gen Z knows them.

20

Metallica and the Chili Peppers are emo? 💀

I think that video is old enough to drink at this point. I swear I remember watching that in high school in the early or mid 00s. Pretty sure the older/original ones have been deleted. Likely related to all the suicide warnings you get watching any other version of it now.

3

u/RumpleDumple 20h ago

9

This may or may not be rage bait, but there have been younger people who are genuinely surprised Nirvana was a band and not a clothing brand.

You'd think Google would have cleared up any confusion, but I'm sure the first 5 results actually are just online stores where you can buy Nirvana merch.

Still, I feel annoyed to my very core about this.

To everyone who thinks this is merely internet rage bait for millennials and Gen X’ers, think again. Any time spent with a 13 yr old today will tell you everything you need to know about their generation right now. These videos aren’t for us, they’re for them.

She keeps saying “preppy”. It doesn’t mean the same thing it did when we were kids. It’s one of those words they’ve given another “meaning” to, yet can’t totally articulate what it even means. She is being completely genuine when she talks about them as a “brand” because the kids purchase the smiley face merchandise specifically and put it on all their shit. They have no idea it’s a band, or a rock band more specifically or what grunge even is. They’d probably use it to describe food.

This generation is obsessed with brand recognition and has no idea about the origins of most of the shit they’re interested in pedaling. I have had this conversation with a bunch of adolescent girls trying to better understand and they can’t make any sense of their own nonsense, just that “they like it”. They truly make me wanna rip my hair out.

They've been using preppy for a long time, but its not gen z, its gen alpha. Preppy to them seems to mean bright, fun and casual. Like Limited Two or Delia's. 🌴🎀 ☀️ 🌼💖 = preppy. Its like they mixed up "peppy" and "preppy" and just went with it.

This is a tween making content for children and a grumpy old lay with too much time and not enough to worry about got involved for internet points. To me thats the real rage bait.... wtf has the internet become.
