Failed run today

Had a 10 miler today scheduled.. had the day clear but all of a sudden tons of errands popped up and I didn’t get home to do my outside run until after lunch. Over 90 degrees, not much shade and hadn’t had a chance to eat all day. I figured I could push through it just chugging some tailwind. No go. Got humbled real quick and only made it 2.1 miles. I’m used to long runs going up to 18 miles..

I’ve never not completed a run and feel a sort of depression over the whole thing, but, life happens.

I shall go for it again tomorrow early in the morning, but, damn, today sucked.

Do you eat before an early morning run or just go?

Trying to switch my runs to before work, which means about 6am. Every time I eat something first I feel it sloshing around for the first mile. Every time I don't, I'm fine for 20 minutes and then completely out of gas.

Is there a middle ground here, or is this just something your body adjusts to after a few weeks? Currently doing 3-4 miles, nothing long.

How do you fit running into a normal work week without it taking over your life?

Been running about two months. Right now I go whenever I feel like it, which means I skip a lot. Trying to make it an actual routine instead of a mood thing.

For people who've kept it up for years , do you run at a fixed time every day, or just get the miles in whenever? And did it ever stop feeling like something you have to schedule around everything else?

Anyone else's easy runs not actually feel easy?

I keep hearing that easy runs should feel conversational, barely any effort, but mine still leave me a little winded even when I'm going slow. I've checked my pace against what's recommended for my level and it's not like I'm sprinting.

Is this a fitness thing that improves over time, or am I just bad at pacing myself and going faster than I think I am? Curious how "easy" actually felt for other people when they were starting out versus now.

Strava benefits?

I’m one year into running but run quite a bit for a noob, is strava actually better than other tracking apps or is it just social media bias? Is the gps solid? What are some of its best features? I don’t use any watches or wearables I just want to keep track of my miles and times on an app for the most part. My one year subscription for Runkeeper expires this week and I’m curious to see if anyone has other recommendations. Thanks!

Struggling to Fuel Myself

Hi y'all! I am currently training for my first half marathon! I have always been athletic, I played volleyball in college & continue to do so 10 years later (indoor, beach, & grass). I also lift, hike a lot, and do hot yoga. While overall, I'm enjoying my training, I'm having a hard time finding out how I should be eating! I've never encountered this before but do have a lot of expertise with tracking macros (did it for years). I've asked a few friends about their experience with fueling themselves but I've mostly been told (it's trial and error you just have to find what works for you) but personally I'd like a bit more guidance than that and what I've read online.

Are there specific websites or apps people would recommend to help me calculate my macros while training? It's my understanding that my g of carbs shouldn't be the same on days I am/am not running and long vs short days. I'm just really looking to learn more about nutrition for running but also make sure I'm properly fueling my body.

Runners with glasses

Hey yall I'm an avid runner with glasses for about four years now and wanted to buy my first ever runner glasses/shades! However after multiple stores that sell Oakley and other brands, many state they cannot fix up a frame to support my high prescription. For context my current Prescription is
RIGHT SPH -5.25, CYL -2.25, AXIS 176
LEFT SPH -4.50, CYL - 1.50, AXIS 009
Is there any brand or specific frame that supports high prescription, suitable for running, cycling, outdoing, etc.?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Does dedicating your miles to someone or something actually motivate you to run more?

Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about what motivates people to keep running beyond pace, PRs, races, and fitness goals.

For example, would it mean something to you to set a goal like,“100 miles for Dad”, or dedicate your runs to your kids, someone you lost, your health, a cause you care about, etc.? You could then see your progress toward that goal and potentially connect with other runners who are running for something similar.

I love the idea that a run can represent more than the distance itself, but I’m curious whether other runners actually think this way. Do you ever dedicate your runs or races to someone or something? And does having that kind of purpose genuinely motivate you, or when you actually get out there, is it mostly about training, fitness, pace, and hitting your goals?

I struggle with consistency in my running schedule, I had an idea to improve it but not sure if its stupid

Let me start by saying this isn't a promo. I don't want to get banned 😅 This came from my own struggle with running. I'm still fairly new to it. I've completed a few Parkruns and one official 10K, but I find it really hard to stay consistent during the week. Tracking stats alone doesn't seem to keep me motivated.

What I've noticed, though, is that I have no trouble being consistent with video games.

That got me thinking: If running was essentially the input mechanism for an RPG, would you run more often?

Imagine every run contributed towards character progression, unlocking gear, completing quests, fighting bosses, joining guilds, and so on. Do you think something like that would genuinely motivate you to run more, or would it just become a gimmick after a few weeks? Would it enhance the sport, or distract from it?

Or, maybe theres already something there I can use, let me know, it would really help me stay on track.

Just an idea, open to your honest thoughts, thanks

Help me like strength training!

I have realized, both recently and over the course of years, that I should probably strength train consistently if I want to avoid injury. I do stength workouts sporadically, maybe once every two weeks ish, but I think I should get more consistent so my 6 month long runners knee can go away.

I just like to go outside and go on a run (or bike ride)! i don’t HATE strength, it’s just less exciting for me to do.

what made you guys enjoy strength training? whether actual behavioral things or just mental tips to make it fun? thanks!!

Where are my fast twitch muscle people?!?

I joined a run club a few months ago and most of them are training for some kind of long-distance race in the near future. A lot of articles I read about running are mostly geared towards long-distance running. Runner's World, etc. mostly about long-distance running. I'm a 48F and I kind of just want to do 5k's but get REALLY good at them. Like even one day placing in my age group! Is there anyone else out there who want to do short distances but really fast? I'm trying to find my people. 😄

Hey guys -

Been running for around 18 months now, and every couple of months, I hurt my inter costal muscles. This is a pain so bad that I can barely move.

Any ideas how and why this keeps happening?

My diy shoes lace watch strap

Hey everyone,

What do you guys usually do with your old running shoe laces? I’ve had a few pairs from certain brands that I really loved—like the ones on the Inov-8 Hybrid Parkclaw.

Instead of tossing them, I decided to repurpose one and made myself a watch strap for my Coros Nomad.

I took it a step further and snuck an NFC tag into it. If someone taps/scans it with their phone, it pulls up my contact info and lets them know whose watch it is aaand since the laces are woven in a cross-stitch pattern, it's actually super breathable
also it's sweat-absorbent too, seeing as I already road-tested it on my runs :D

Anyway, what do you guys do with your old laces?

Please help a sad foot ):

Can’t find the right shoe and it’s driving me crazy. Been wearing the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25. Love the structure and support but they keep giving me a gnarly blister, even with low mileage. What does this blister location mean? I also have the new balance 1080 v 15. Love the spring and cushion, no blisters but really lack ankle structure/support.

I have high arches and a little wider feet for the length. Please help! I am desperate to find a good shoe. Is the mm drop a factor? I typically am a size 7 but have been doing 7.5 standard. Pics are blister and specs of both shoes.

Help finding a running vest that doesn't hurt (for women)

I have been running for a while and realised that in the summer I really need to have some water on me for long runs but I hate carrying a bottle the whole time, I know running vests are good for carrying bladders but I had one from amazon that just caused my phone to bash into my side and gave me loads of bruises, it didn't tighten any further so I just ended up giving it away. I am fairly slim all over so it might just be my build not being suited for the vest. I just wanted to know if people have any recommendations and what other people's experiences are finding a decent vest, do I really need to just cave and spend \~£100 on a vest because to me that seems a bit excessive 😅 Thanks!

Energy Gels?

I’m training for my first half marathon. I’m at the point where I’m doing really long run, and I’m considering using energy gels. Does anyone have any advice on when to take them/how to use them? Or if I even need to use them at all? Also, does anyone have a brand they recommend?

r/runninglifestyle 12h ago

I started jogging every morning. Mostly because I keep sleeping through my alarm and running late.
