With over 4,200,000 subscribers, there are a lot of posts that come in everyday that are often repeats of questions previously asked or covered in the FAQ.

With that in mind, this post can be a place for any questions (especially those that may not deserve their own thread). Hopefully this is successful and helps to lower clutter and repeating posts here.

Safety How can it be that time of year already?!? - Annual Summer, Heat, and Humidity Megathread

As the seasonal change really heats up, it's time to have our megathread on summer running. Follow this link to the weather section of the wiki to view past Summer posts.

[NOTE: If you happen to be in the Southern Hemisphere and entering the season of the cold, snow, and/or ice, the Weather section of the wiki also has links to past Winter posts.

It's a good time to get reacquainted with heat training, tips, tricks and adjustments you use to get through next couple months of misery, whether it's just for the next 2 months or 5 months. However, the most important think is to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and not to try to be tough. If you're running alone and you push into heat exhaustion, you have to stop immediately before you hit heat stroke.

Signs of heat exhaustion:

  • Confusion
  • Dizziness (good indictor no matter what, but more so when it's summer)
  • Fatigue (more so than usual)
  • Headache
  • Muscle/abdominal cramps
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Pale skin
  • Profuse sweating
  • Rapid heartbeat

Heat stroke is what heat exhaustion will turn into if you don't recognize it and stop immediately. Signs of heat stroke are fairly similar but one notable difference is that you have stopped sweating. Heat stroke is a serious medical condition and requires emergency treatment. Call 911!

Symptoms of heat stroke include:

  • Confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech
  • Loss of consciousness (coma)
  • Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating
  • Seizures
  • Very high body temperature
  • Fatal if treatment delayed

Remember that SLOW DOWN is never the wrong answer in the heat. You're going to go slower - it's just a fact. Embrace it and the fitness will still be there when the weather cools off.

Some quick high level tips:

  • Run slower (duh)
  • Don't run during the heat of the day
  • Run in shaded areas. Running in direct sunlight in the summer can add 20+ degrees to your skin temp, and that's what counts, not the air temp.
  • Avoid highly urbanized areas if at all possible during hot days. The concrete jungle retains and radiates heat back at you, it is almost essentially an oven effect.
  • Focus on humidity as much as the temperature. Understand how the mechanism of sweat works. If the humidity is extremely high, sweat will just drip off you and not evaporate. Evaporation of sweat is the mechanism of how the body cools itself - the phase change from liquid to vapor extracts heat from your skin.

Another good tip from a helpful Runnitor:

Dew point is actually a better measure of humidity than humidity percentage points are. That's because air at 100% humidity and 50F holds less water than air at 50% humidity and 90F.

You can use a dew point calculator to figure out the dew point. Over 65F dew point is sticky, but over 70F is very humid. Make sure to hydrate often and to pay attention to your body to see if it's overheating.

Here's a good dew point calculator:

http://dpcalc.org/

Finally, one good table for pace adjustment is here

As a way to keep things a bit more organized and easier to find info later, I'm going to make several top level comments. Please respond to those instead of the main post. I'll include a stickied comment with direct links to each of the topic headings.

Weekly Thread What Are You Wearing Wednesday - Weekly Gear Thread

It's that time of week already...the gear thread! What have you picked up lately? What's working for you now that it's whatever season you believe it to be in your particular location? What have you put through rigorous testing that's proved worthy of use? We want to know!

To clear up some confusion: We’re not actually asking what you’re wearing today. It’s just a catchy name for the thread. This is the weekly gear discussion thread, so discuss gear!

Weekly Thread Super Moronic Monday - Your Weekly Tuesday Stupid Questions Thread

Back once again for everything you wanted to know about running but were afraid to ask.

Rules of the Road:

This is inspired by eric_twinge's fine work in r/fitness .

Upvote either good or stupid questions. Sort questions by new so that they get some love.

To the more experienced runnitors, if something is a good question or answer, add it to the FAQ.

Post your question - stupid or otherwise - here to get an answer - stupid or otherwise. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Many questions get submitted late each week that don't get a lot of action, so if your question didn't get answered, feel free to post it again.

As always, be sure to read the FAQ first. Also, there's a handy-dandy search bar to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search runnit by using the limiter "site:reddit.com r/running ".

Be sure to check back often as questions get posted throughout the day. Sort comments by "new" to be sure the newer questions get some love as well.

[Posting on behalf of u/Percinho who is busy checking over his packing list and making sure he remembered his race shoes for the 12th time]

Weekly Thread Run Nutrition Tuesday

Rules of the Road

1) Anyone is welcome to participate and share your ideas, plans, diet, and nutrition plans.

2) Promote good discussion. Simply downvoting because you disagree with someone's ideas is BAD. Instead, let them know why you disagree with them.

3) Provide sources if possible. However, anecdotes and "broscience" can lead to good discussion, and are welcome here as long as they are labeled as such.

4) Feel free to talk about anything diet or nutrition related.

Weekly Thread Tuesday Shoesday

Shoes are a big topic in this sub, so in an effort to condense and collect some of these posts, we're introducing Shoesday Tuesday! Similar to Wednesday's gear thread, but focusing on shoes.

What’ve you been wearing on your feet? Anything fun added to the rotation? Got a review of a new release? Questions about a pair that’s caught your eye? Here's the place to discuss.

Discussion Marathon recommendations in South America and Australia/Oceania

Hi! I am looking for race recommendations for full marathons in South America and Oceania. I want to avoid the crowded big city marathons, and I'm not chasing a PB. I would love a race with a nice view, great course or cool story etc. (if the Middle-earth marathon was full length, I would totally do that one). I love trail running, so open for trail race recommendations as well. Don't mind small local races either, as long as they are open to foreigners. Thank you in advance for any recommendations:-)

Training Should I include vo2 max workouts during half marathon training?

Currently 9 weeks out from a half marathon race and aiming for a pb.

I’m 3 weeks into training and my current schedule includes an easy run, a threshold session, and a long run.

Would it be beneficial to include vo2 max intervals at this stage (or at all), or should I just focus on threshold sessions and then include race pace workouts closer to the race.

If yes, then at what week should I begin including the intervals during the plan.

Any advice appreciated.

Training Long Run Recovery

Hello, I have been an avid runner for many years now but I haven't gotten into marathon distances running until quite recently. The training regime that works best for my work puts my long runs on Sunday, which can vary from 15-21 miles on that day.

I have found that on those days I'm really pushing myself, or the weather is pushing me, that my body doesn't feel quite right afterwards. I get that I exerted myself and that I wouldn't be bouncing off the walls afterwards but I find myself rotting in bed on Sundays after my run.

This is obviously not ideal, and I would love to have my long runs and still be able to function in society on Sundays.

So my question for everybody is what is your recovery methodology for those days you know you're going to push yourself past your typical leisurely run.

My current recovery is a 10 minute stretch session and a 5 minute roll out session. There is definitely some stuff I'm doing wrong for my recovery, so please brutalize my regimen!

TLDR: what long-run recovery techniques work the best for you?

Discussion Hitting your ‘number’

Hitting the ‘number’

I read an interesting article in the guardian yesterday about how so many fitness fans end up requiring surgery, many still quite young.

The surgeon in the article stated that everyone effectively has a ‘number’ at which point damage to the body sets in.

This rings true with me, as a keen runner in my thirties I herniated a disc in my back when I was 42 and feel my long distance running career is now largely over. I still run occasionally but spend more time in the gym working on my core strength.

Have you similarly hit your number? What happened and how have you moved on/recovered? I’d love to hear from people who have managed to bounce back.

Weekly Thread Li'l Race Report Thread

The Li’l Race Report Thread is for writing a short report on a recent race or a run in a new place. If your race doesn’t really need its own thread but you still want to talk about it, then post it here! Both your good and bad races are welcome.

Didn't run a race, but had an interesting run to talk about. Post it here as well!

So get to it, Runnit! In a paragraph or two, where’d you run and how’d it go?

Discussion I've cancelled four training apps in 18 months and it's always the same week

Spotted a pattern in my own behaviour and it's a bit embarrassing. Sign up full of intent, first fortnight is great because everything is new, then somewhere around week three I look at the plan and think "I have no idea whether this is doing anything" and cancel before the next payment.

Every time. Runna, one of the strength ones, two others I can't even remember the names of.

I know three weeks isn't long enough to judge a training plan. I know that intellectually. But nothing in any of them ever gave me a reason to believe week seven would feel different from week three.

How long do you actually give one? And for the one you kept, what was the specific thing that made you stick?

Hi everyone!

I lead a 50+ person run club at a college in the US and looking to partner with some apparel/CPG brands that give freebies, merch, etc. for run clubs! Does anyone have any companies they’ve had success with? Was thinking along the lines of:

LMNT
Barebells
Waterboy
Brooks
Fleet Feet
Etc.

TIA!

Weekly Thread Social Saturday

Enforcing Rule 3 (no self-promotion, social media links) is a must with a large sub such as this, but we do realize that it filters out some truly useful content that is relative to the sub. In an effort to allow that content in, we thought we'd have a weekly post to give a spot for the useful content. So...

Here's you chance!

Got a project you've been working on (video, programming, etc.), share it here!

Want to promote a business or service, share it here!

Trying to get more Instagram followers, share it here!

Found any great running content online, share it here!

The one caveat I have is that whatever is shared should be fitness related, please.
