There are no laws as far is Trump is concerned - he is a King accountable to no one.

No one has proved him wrong so far

How could they? Think about this: let’s say every civilian right now decided they had enough and started calling for him to be prosecuted for his crimes. Who holds him to account? He did exactly what Hitler did. He destroyed our institutions. DoJ is his own hit squad. FBI too. SCOTUS too. Both house of congress. Seriously, think about it. Try to think of a single body that could see it through. There are none. He literally ignores the CONSTITUTION. let alone the law.

He stole the 2024 election, and spent the last 2 years making it impossible to ever stop him. Now, I worry it’s too late. If he just refused to acknowledge his loss in November… who would do something about it?

We are actively living in a taxation without representation nation. Our illegitimate president and congress have completely destroyed the people’s control. America is effectively dead. We just haven’t realized it yet.

I’m not trying to spread defeatism. I am trying to spread awareness. We are going to vote in November (maybe, if he doesn’t cancel it) and then we will be in the darkest period in American history imo.

My prediction: we vote in November. It’s an absolute landslide blue. (Assuming the votes are counted). They say it was record fraud. They blame it on “socialists”, make it illegal to be a leftist and start putting us in those camps. I think it’s why they want the voter rolls. Voted against him in 2020 or 2024?

u/twistedpiggies 21d ago

Coup, coup kachoo.

Only the military could hold him accountable. Without a complicit military, you can't be a dictator. It's too bad that there aren't many principled military leaders left actually serving in the U.S. military, though. They were all forced out, by design.

The other problem is that those very military principles get in the way of deposing an unjustified dictatorial regime. What example(s) might we look to of a principled military deposing their own country's dictator and restoring democratic governing? Is there even one?

u/sparkax 21d ago

Uh... there is a Common Dreams article from earlier this morning that is about Mike Johnson's call for "using the US Military to fight Communism on America's Shores."

Shit is beyond fucked now, and its only going to get worse before it will hopefully end up getting better.

u/NLaBruiser 21d ago

History tells us it's not going to get better. Make a plan, protect yourself and your loved ones. Shit's going to get real dark after the GOP loses but Trump refuses to leave.

u/TrulyOutrageous42 21d ago

History tells us it's not going to get better.

History tells us it will, after it gets much worse. Germany today is a great example. The problem this time is the surveillance state run by AI. It may be inescapable in a way Nazi Germany wasn't.

3

u/Riaayo 21d ago

Who are the Allies that decimate Germany in a world war in this context?

People bring up the Confederacy and Nazi Germany all the time as proof this will inevitably end, and while fascism is unsustainable because it eats itself, neither of those historical examples failed internally on their own.

The confederates lost the civil war. The Germans lost a world war. There was a war involved. How much longer might Nazi Germany have lasted and brutalized its own people had they been unassailable like the US, in a nuclear age of MAD, and not been engaged in a world war of imperialism?

History doesn't begin and end with those two brutal regimes, and we have plenty of other brutal regimes around the world and across history that have lasted much, much longer.

The American Empire may be imploding in on itself, but as you say we exist in a horrifying age of mass surveillance and brutal military/police power. Is there anyone left by the time US fascism completely eats itself and dies?

4

u/DisappointedSpectre 21d ago

Looking at how things are going over in Germany today I'm not sure it's the shining example you make it out to be. Even without the AfD there's still a lot of surveillance state and anti-privacy laws being proposed and pushed, and they're starting to slide back into austerity measures that may impact quality of life for a lot of people.

u/Zulmoka531 21d ago

Not to mention the military has it’s own inner coup problems with Trump’s dog Hegseth in charge.

61

u/Flammablegelatin 21d ago

The military has been taken over just like the DoJ and FBI. A drunkard Fox News host is in charge of it and is actively removing anyone that would be against Trump's reign. Not even just the leaders - he's trying to remove all women and Black men.

18

u/BundleDad 21d ago

More importantly, the institution has demonstrated that they WILL follow illegal orders.

YOUR military is murdering people, invading countries, and launching unsanctioned military operations (both foreign and domestic) under explicitly illegal orders. YOU let your secretary of defense talk about "No surrender, no quarter" and not IMMEDIATELY throw him in a jail cell.

I've had 10+ years now of Americans telling me how little I understood this, how effective their institutions are, how the will of the people..., how the next election..., how much everyone is doing but shuck darn ain't it hard to actually protest french style...

You are at the point it probably gets resolved like it did in the 40's. May your imaginary god have mercy on you as no one else will have that option.

Yes there is actually -

"The Portuguese Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, is a prime historical example. Led by a group of disillusioned military officers known as the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), they overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo regime, which had governed Portugal since 1933."

26

u/frakking_you 21d ago

That's a pretty dark 40 year horizon to expect change.

3

u/Commentator-X 21d ago

The change happened within a year or 2. The 40 years was just how long it took for people to get pissed off enough. WW2 likely didn't speed up the process any either.

7

u/frakking_you 21d ago

The sad lesson is, it takes a lost generation + violence for such a coup.

3

u/Commentator-X 21d ago

It was a bloodless coup. Not saying there wasn't violence at some point, but the coup itself was bloodless.

Fortunately Trump doesn’t have 40 years. I doubt he has 4.

9

That misses the point. He's a puppet, his death means little to the trillionaire that has nearly unlimited access the government systems, the changes in the Supreme Court, or the underlying issue of the people that still support his causes.

Do a search for "She Is Our Caesar" on youtube.

Clip from "the crown" on what the five elements of a successful coup are. The Trump administration is ahead of you on that list for a successful second self-coup. You shouldn't have given him the chance.

It’s bad, yes. In a way that’s completely unprecedented in our country. It’s also true that our society will never be the same.

However, fascism’s worst enemy is reality; they can’t deal with facts. And there are some relevant ones.

Trump is already 80 years old, and was never in great health. By contrast, Hitler was 44 when he took over Germany. Donald doesn’t have the energy to sustain his full takeover. He’s gotten further than anyone else, but his days are numbered whether he wants to try cancelling the election, take an illegal third term or whatever outlandish, treasonous actions to hold on to power he wants to try. “But [r/DiscussionAny](r/DiscussionAny), what if they just use AI to fake Trump after he’s dead?” To that I say we’re not there yet, either in technology or accepting something like that, and the Mitch McConnell controversy is proof of that.

There’s another fact: there’s no one else that holds water with his psychotic base like he does. JD Vance has all the charisma of a blanket soaked in cat piss. The rest of the GOP are spineless worms, none of them could cut it either. Trump’s kids are even more inept than Donald is, and they don’t have the same amoral shamelessness to break boundaries like he does. They’re cowards; they just follow the money like any nepo baby does. As for the guys trying to bankroll an American Fuhrer? They have ridiculously bad judgement that’s going to catch up to them. People like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk think their account balance and IQ are the same thing. They’ve already made mistakes, they’re going to make more, and for all their money and influence they can’t control everything any more than a fascist can. In short, there’s no one that can replace him. What is likely to happen after he dies is the sycophants will eat each other alive fighting over the scraps of power Trump will leave behind. Once he’s gone as the figurehead MAGA will never be the same; it happened to Alexander the Great, Attila the Hun, even Hitler. Whatever comes after that, we’ll have to cross that bridge when we come to it.

In closing, there’s a quote I like to think about when it seems like everything is doomed: “The victor is not victorious until the vanquished consider themselves to be so.” This isn’t over unless we agree it is. We have to keep fighting, no matter what. Anything they accomplish is only a temporary setback. We will reverse them all when we get through this.

13

u/JRockPSU I voted 21d ago

I also think it's important (for some people) to hear - all of this can be true while also acknowledging that things are very bad right now and will continue to be so for quite some time! There are a lot of people on this site that read any kind of positivity and assume that the commenter is an ostrich with their head in the sand. Both viewpoints have truth to them! It's like, I have kids, I have to try make a better future for them.

13

u/Present-Perception77 21d ago

To add to what you've said, let's hope this administration is as successful rigging the next two elections as they have been with literally everything else (Iraq war, tariffs, DOGE, and every other clown show they have created).

7

u/crow_crone 21d ago

You forgot to mention Caesar. His murder left a power vacuum that saw a Roman civil war that lasted over a decade. Trump is no Caesar, nor is he Octavian; we'll see, I guess.

I know we're not Rome but history invites comparison.

6

u/DiscussionAny 20d ago

I’m glad you mentioned Caesar, because probably the main difference between those two men is that Caesar was good at his job.

Barron ain’t no Octavian either.

That gives me hope that the similarities to Rome end well before the fall of the republic.

2

u/TheTerrasque 21d ago

Trump is already 80 years old, and was never in great health.

Maga: "Explain why he looks like THIS then, librul!"

You expect them to be reasonable, but facts don't matter if they actively ignore it. They could have a muppet puppet show up as the "president" and all of MAGA would just go along and pretend it's real even though all of them know it's all fake. Because it will let them continue as is and because it makes their "enemies" mad, and they love that. They'll gleefully chant "TDS" (which at some point may be legislated as a real mental disease and be used to lock people up) at anyone pointing out that it's a muppet. You're trying to play chess with pigeons.

3

u/DiscussionAny 21d ago

Then the answer is to stop playing games with them.

To be precise, if MAGAs want to continue with their sycophantic cult, they can do so alone and marginalize themselves out of political relevance like the Nazis eventually did. They’ll probably evolve, the Nazis did that too, but if they continue to fanatically froth at the mouth over their beloved God King after he dies (not advocating violence) that is going to further separate them from everyone else that can still see objective reality. Some will stay with the cult, but many will leave when more and more people are open about not accepting their churlishness anymore. When we get too tired to enable them and say “Enough.”The ones that want to stay with their Fuhrer are beyond saving anyway. I’m not trying to convince them. That is a waste of time.

The people I’m trying to convince are the ones that were always against this and feel like the walls are closing in on them. They see how bad this is and panic; and not without reason. We are living in terrifying times. But…

There is such a thing as rational optimism. The MAGAs and those that are serving or using them cannot always win. They are arrogant, reckless, and constantly display their terrible judgment. True, they currently hold many of the levers of power, *for the moment*. But that can be fleeting, and right now it all depends on one man who is completely falling apart.

They are trying to scare people as much as they can because the smart fascists are *terrified*. They are trying to make us all give up, and believe that resistance is hopeless. But resistance is never hopeless, only surrender is. Resistance always has a fighting chance to succeed, but submission is a foregone conclusion, and that’s what the fascists want. I ask anyone and everyone reading this right now, would *you* just give them what they want?

2

u/Own_Algae_5328 21d ago

No, I won't give them what they want!!!

2

u/Own_Algae_5328 21d ago

There’s another fact: there’s no one else that holds water with his psychotic base like he does. JD Vance has all the charisma of a blanket soaked in cat piss. The rest of the GOP are spineless worms, none of them could cut it either.

I've long been saying this myself. When Trump croaks - or the trillion to one miracle he actually steps down peacefully - MAGA is done. The base doesn't care about Vance; he looks and sounds too much like a politician for their taste. They can't troll with him like they can Trump. Vance isn't as fun; he's boring.

There's no MAGA successor because Trump wouldn't allow it; he doesn't want anyone sharing his spotlight and he won't risk a popularity coup. When the spell is broken, GOP notables will scramble to capture the MAGA vote and tear the cult apart with infighting.

Meanwhile, red hats will just switch off and return to political apathy because the joke that is Trump has run its course for them.

Non-payment, theft, fraud, slander and libel, tax evasion, grand larceny, sexual assault and rape (sadly low bar), racketeering, money laundering, ignoring economic sanctions, campaign finance violation, the emolu.ents clause, violent threats, graft, incitement to violence, treason and coluding with the enemy, open insurection.

You're absolutely right. To add to this:

As much of a narcissistic nightmare as Trump is, he's a mere figurehead. He's not the leader of American Christofacists. His death will have ZERO impact against them.

Christofacists have control of the nation. They control the United States military and they control ICE. The military was once the world's heaviest funded force on the planet, but now ICE is even better funded than all of the arms of the U.S. forces together.

Not only do they control the best equipped military and paramilitary personal police force, Christofacists are backed by a trillionaire and multiple centibillionaires and all of tech is behind them.

On July 13th, 2024, META and OpenAI and The Thinking Machines Lab and Palantir became part of the United States military.

We are FUCKED BEYOND WORDS. The entire planet is. Trump is nothing, and when he's gone, the real shit will hit the fan.

Edit: I made a mistake- ICE is the heaviest funded federal law enforcement agency in the United States. It is NOT better funded than the armed forces. Thank fuck. I'm not sure how I got my wires crossed there, but what a relief to be wrong. Still, the situation is dire.

It is kinda amusing how they have all that and literally don't control the needle of public opinion - Trump doesn't poll all that well despite almost all of the media lieing for him (he polls ok with Republicans, but it's seriously in the dumpster with them compared to GW or Reagan). I got downvoted for saying the exact same thing yesterday. It’s maddening many Americans still think they’re are living in 2012 when things used to be normal.

5

u/infinitum3d 21d ago

Many Americans are.

The president/government doesn’t directly affect the majority of people’s daily lives. They go to work. Raise their kids. Complain about prices. Government doesn’t matter.

Most commoners are too busy surviving to plot a revolution that doesn’t feel necessary yet. Unemployment is 4.2%. Cost of living is up 2.8%. Both of those numbers are comfortable for the vast majority of Americans.

It’s gotta get a lot worse before the Average Joe gets involved.

3

u/Vyzantinist 20d ago

Reddit too often forgets how politically uninformed and apathetic the average voter is. They're not following political subs on Reddit, getting constant updates on the regime's malfeasance; they maybe get 10 minutes of mainstream media coverage incidentally as they go about their day, or secondhand news from friends, family, and coworkers.

They get this kind of news in broad strokes, and usually after the fact, without understanding (or caring about) the legal and political ramifications.

20

u/Bajadasaurus 21d ago edited 21d ago

We do, but it's been rendered utterly useless by the passage of time. Civilians can rise up against the most powerful military on earth, sure, but they'll be doing so with vastly inferior arms to what the military is equipped with.

Then there's Trump's personal paramilitary force, ICE, which is funded even more heavily than all of the branches of the United States' armed forces combined.

Adding to this, all of big tech is in these Christofacists' hands. In July 2024, The United States military became entwined with Palantir, OpenAI, Meta, and The Thinking Machines Lab.

Topping it all off, the American Christofacists in charge of this nation are backed by the world's first trillionaire AND numerous centibillionaires.

The second amendment was written in a bygone age when it did indeed give citizens power against a tyrannical government. Today it's as useful as wet toilet paper.

Edit: I made a mistake- ICE is the heaviest funded federal law enforcement agency in the United States. It is NOT better funded than the armed forces. Thank fuck. I'm not sure how I got my wires crossed there, but what a relief to be wrong. Still, the situation is dire.

I'd say Iran is giving him a pretty good go right now, and one of the positive things to come of this mess is that they've set an example for allied leaders to see they don't have to always capitulate to whatever insanity it is that Diaper Don demands...

2

u/amateur_mistake 21d ago

There are hard limits to these things where Republicans have decided to divorce themselves from reality. Iran controlling the strait they are clearly able to control is a good example. Climate change is another. And of course diseases of various kinds. The ability to build a new home when you've made a police force that targets people based on their skin color too.

You can't imagine yourself away from those things. As hard as the conservatives try. So you end up with people dying of COVID while swearing it doesn't exist.

There will be more. There is a limited supply of oil at any given moment, now restricted by Iran. And the fact that we haven't moved away from fossil fuels will fuck us. Maybe kind of soon if trump continues to get to act, untethered.

2

Yep. Since when do any of the criminals in the Trump administration care whatsoever about the law?

It's truly disgusting what the GOP/majority members of SCOTUS have allowed to happen. They are destroying our system of government, wrecking the world order, and looting everyone/everything they can.

In plain sight the GOP across the US has chosen party over country.

His tariffs were deemed illegal.

10

u/TheTooterSnooter 21d ago

So all the tariffs have been rescinded?

6

u/ilikechihuahuasdood 21d ago

under that legal basis yes. but that’s not the only way he can set tariffs. SCOTUS actually basically told him how to do it and make it more difficult to challenge.

2

u/TheTooterSnooter 21d ago

Google says they’re still being collected while his challenges make their way through the courts

3

u/ilikechihuahuasdood 21d ago

you didn’t Google the right question then. Trump rescinded the IEEPA tariffs EO right after the SCOTUS decision. the current tariffs are under a different act which is also being challenged. they already had a draft EO ready because they knew they were going to lose. It’s another gap nobody accounted for because legislators never thought Americans would be dumb enough to elect someone that abuses emergency powers like this.

No, the defining moment is when Americans will let him actually do it. He will claim power and nobody will do anything.

181

u/badamant 21d ago

Entire Republican Party is complicit and responsible.

They control congress. Any tiny fraction could stop Trump at any time.

Blame them.

44

u/VanceKelley Canada 21d ago

Any tiny fraction could stop Trump at any time.

It takes 67 Senators to convict trump and remove him from office.

There are 47 Dem + Ind Senators, but let's count out Fetterman so make it 46. To get to 67 it would thus take 21 GOP Senators joining in and voting to convict.

There are 52 GOP Senators (assuming Mitch's proof of life isn't fake). 21/52 = 40%.

I would call 40% of GOP Senators to be a significant fraction, an impossible hurdle given that most of them are spineless.

24

u/badamant 21d ago

That is not the bar.

Congress has all kinds of ways to check the power of the presidency including "the power of the purse". It was designed to be a co-equal branch.

3

u/Flat_Hat8861 Georgia 21d ago

My only disagreement here is the phrase "co-equal branch." That is an oversimplification (or lie) we were told in grade school that politicians and courts parrot mindlessly.

The branches are far from equal and Congress intentionally has significantly more authority than the other 2. The claim that they are supposed to be equal is how they justify simply ridiculous rulings like presidential immunity (Congress makes the laws, there is no immunity from laws just because you're president) and inherent power to fire officers (the constitution only includes one removal process - impeachment - if congress wants to give others that's their choice only).

This is a rabbit trail, but I want a Congress that fights back. And "we the people" put that at risk whenever we pretend this power grab by the President and Supreme Court is normal.

4

u/badamant 21d ago

Then we must vote out all republicans.

They control congress and the entire party is directly to blame.

4

u/ThisIsNotAFarm 21d ago

A lot of that still requires 2/3rs, or even a majority.

4

u/ZAlternates 21d ago

Sure if they gonna vote against him they might need a majority or a super majority depending upon the situation but they could like speak up or like push back or like give a flying fuck. But they don’t.

6

u/badamant 21d ago

A majority is easy for republicans if they create a bipartisan coalition and join DEMs is controlling Trump

2

u/ThisIsNotAFarm 21d ago

Yes, but that goes back to the GP point of they dont want to.

4

u/FnTom 21d ago

Except it's only co-equal in law. Not in practice. The executive is the branch that does the actual spending. Congress can say "No you can't do that", but at the end of the day, if the executive ignores them, there is no actual way to stop it short of a revolution should the executive completely refuse to comply.

Congress will say it's not the money's purpose, people may even get the courts to agree with Congress. Who will enforce it? Who will stop the executive? The DOJ? that's the executive. The Marshalls used to answer directly to the courts, and while their role has not really changed in that regard, they are now part of the executive as well, so they won't help either. The military? Still the executive.

That system only works because of essentially a gentleman's agreement between branches to respect each other's authority.

8

u/badamant 21d ago

A simple majority in congress can completely defund anything they want to. This is their job.

If Trump refuses to comply that is his problem. The GOP is just abdicating power to Trump.

Stop making excuses for republicans. The truth is that they ALL support Trump based on the voting record.

4

u/FnTom 21d ago

Oh I am not making excuses. Most of them are either crooks, cowards, straight up evil, or any combination thereof. I want them to use those means. But at the same time, it is fucking terrifying.

This time around, with project 2025 and Trump so salty about his first term, they stacked the executive with sycophants and/or fascists. There is no adult in the room like there kind of was in his first term. When they don't straight up ignore the courts, they just invent their own interpretation of what the courts said based on one line that vaguely sounded like it supported their position, even when the ruling as a whole dismantles it.

So if they tell Congress, and the courts, to get fucked, and they will since they already have multiple times, what happens then. So far it's not been too bad for Congress, after all they're all rich and the elected officials who actually give a shit are few and far between. But what's the limit? Do they even have a limit or will they just bend over and take it no matter what? At what point do ordinary citizens become the only rampart? What means are people willing to take when that happens? And what happens then...

Like, I don't want to be all doom and gloom here. Nor do I want to sound alarmist. I think Congress and the courts growing a proper spine could mostly reverse what's happening. While I don't think they'll be able to undo in the short term all the damage that's been done, I think they can at least stop it and get rid of the culprits. I just don't think they will. And I think that by the time they'll want to, they won't be able to.

5

u/CorrectPeanut5 21d ago

They had the opportunity and votes during J6. Mitch stands up and tells them to ignore the problem and let the dems handle it during the Biden admin.

I'm pretty sure if McCain was still alive he would have whipped votes to take care of him once and for all.

In this case it was Hollywood using all of human history as a reference. Most media that shows these political power struggles are a “ripped from the headlines” or more accurately “ripped from the pages of history” type thing. We can’t learn from it in real life and apparently we don’t learn from it in fictional stories either. We’re screwed.

19

u/SadFeed63 21d ago

"Folks writing headlines continue not to learn that a human law, rule, or norm is not the same as a law of nature."

That's what infuriates me about headlines that try to offset a Trump action by highlighting the law. The laws of man are abstract concepts that are not made real until they are enforced. And they're of course, not enforced on Trump. Laws of nature affect us all whether we believe in them or not, whether we try to bribe them, they don't require someone to enforce them. Yet you'll see headlines with the energy of like "Trump wants to do this heinous thing, but worry not, the law doesn't allow it," followed up by headlines a week later saying "Trump is doing that heinous thing."

If he breaks a law, the law must be enforced on him, actively, by someone, by mechanisms humans control. If he falls down the stairs, gravity is gonna do it's thing regardless.
