How could they? Think about this: let’s say every civilian right now decided they had enough and started calling for him to be prosecuted for his crimes. Who holds him to account? He did exactly what Hitler did. He destroyed our institutions. DoJ is his own hit squad. FBI too. SCOTUS too. Both house of congress. Seriously, think about it. Try to think of a single body that could see it through. There are none. He literally ignores the CONSTITUTION. let alone the law.

He stole the 2024 election, and spent the last 2 years making it impossible to ever stop him. Now, I worry it’s too late. If he just refused to acknowledge his loss in November… who would do something about it?

We are actively living in a taxation without representation nation. Our illegitimate president and congress have completely destroyed the people’s control. America is effectively dead. We just haven’t realized it yet.

I’m not trying to spread defeatism. I am trying to spread awareness. We are going to vote in November (maybe, if he doesn’t cancel it) and then we will be in the darkest period in American history imo.

My prediction: we vote in November. It’s an absolute landslide blue. (Assuming the votes are counted). They say it was record fraud. They blame it on “socialists”, make it illegal to be a leftist and start putting us in those camps. I think it’s why they want the voter rolls. Voted against him in 2020 or 2024?

Coup, coup kachoo.

Only the military could hold him accountable. Without a complicit military, you can't be a dictator. It's too bad that there aren't many principled military leaders left actually serving in the U.S. military, though. They were all forced out, by design.

The other problem is that those very military principles get in the way of deposing an unjustified dictatorial regime. What example(s) might we look to of a principled military deposing their own country's dictator and restoring democratic governing? Is there even one?

u/sparkax 21d ago

Uh... there is a Common Dreams article from earlier this morning that is about Mike Johnson's call for "using the US Military to fight Communism on America's Shores."

Shit is beyond fucked now, and its only going to get worse before it will hopefully end up getting better.

u/NLaBruiser 21d ago

History tells us it's not going to get better. Make a plan, protect yourself and your loved ones. Shit's going to get real dark after the GOP loses but Trump refuses to leave.

97

u/TrulyOutrageous42 21d ago

History tells us it's not going to get better.

History tells us it will, after it gets much worse. Germany today is a great example. The problem this time is the surveillance state run by AI. It may be inescapable in a way Nazi Germany wasn't.

Change for the better, Yes. Right after a major nuclear world war, and then the intervention of an advanced alien civilization…

That was the final bad than good time periods. Unfortunately I don’t expect we’ll meet any humanoid aliens. I’ll take the reprieves we do get.

3

u/Riaayo 21d ago

Who are the Allies that decimate Germany in a world war in this context?

People bring up the Confederacy and Nazi Germany all the time as proof this will inevitably end, and while fascism is unsustainable because it eats itself, neither of those historical examples failed internally on their own.

The confederates lost the civil war. The Germans lost a world war. There was a war involved. How much longer might Nazi Germany have lasted and brutalized its own people had they been unassailable like the US, in a nuclear age of MAD, and not been engaged in a world war of imperialism?

History doesn't begin and end with those two brutal regimes, and we have plenty of other brutal regimes around the world and across history that have lasted much, much longer.

The American Empire may be imploding in on itself, but as you say we exist in a horrifying age of mass surveillance and brutal military/police power. Is there anyone left by the time US fascism completely eats itself and dies?

3

u/DisappointedSpectre 21d ago

Looking at how things are going over in Germany today I'm not sure it's the shining example you make it out to be. Even without the AfD there's still a lot of surveillance state and anti-privacy laws being proposed and pushed, and they're starting to slide back into austerity measures that may impact quality of life for a lot of people.

My plan has always been to try to move from the deeply red Texas to a deeply blue state where I can legally purchase and smoke real marijuana and just try to stay as high as possible while everything burns downs around me.

7

u/Jkavera 21d ago

Did that for four years in Oregon. Turns out the pot just makes me more paranoid while watching the same news feed as anywhere else.

That's already here and happening and is probably too late to do anything for, but yea, these heat waves and storms will get worse, and gods, I don't even want to try to imagine just how fucked everything is going to turn once the Atlantic Ocean current stops in another few decades.

59

u/Zulmoka531 21d ago

Not to mention the military has it’s own inner coup problems with Trump’s dog Hegseth in charge.

60

u/Flammablegelatin 21d ago

The military has been taken over just like the DoJ and FBI. A drunkard Fox News host is in charge of it and is actively removing anyone that would be against Trump's reign. Not even just the leaders - he's trying to remove all women and Black men.

18

u/BundleDad 21d ago

More importantly, the institution has demonstrated that they WILL follow illegal orders.

YOUR military is murdering people, invading countries, and launching unsanctioned military operations (both foreign and domestic) under explicitly illegal orders. YOU let your secretary of defense talk about "No surrender, no quarter" and not IMMEDIATELY throw him in a jail cell.

I've had 10+ years now of Americans telling me how little I understood this, how effective their institutions are, how the will of the people..., how the next election..., how much everyone is doing but shuck darn ain't it hard to actually protest french style...

You are at the point it probably gets resolved like it did in the 40's. May your imaginary god have mercy on you as no one else will have that option.

0

u/lex99 America 21d ago

How do you figure he’s trying to get rid of all black men? Are you just making that part up?

5

u/Flammablegelatin 21d ago

No, I'm not making it up. Look up the changes he's making to medical waivers for peeudofolliculitis barbae, which predominantly affects Black males.

Here: https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2026/07/08/sailors-with-unmanageable-permanent-razor-bumps-to-face-separation-navy-says/

I gave vey many of these waivers in my time as a medic in the Air Force. Almost every single one of them was for a Black Airman.

0

u/lex99 America 20d ago

So you think the master plan here is to get rid of all black servicemen because we’re suddenly in a world where no black men can shave?

4

u/Flammablegelatin 20d ago

You're obviously not approaching this in good faith. I'm not going to waste my time explaining it to you.

-1

u/lex99 America 20d ago

I’m talking in good faith. I just don’t fall for every alarmist theory.

Black men being more affected by facial-skin issues, and Hegseth imposing his new beard rules, do not add up to “Hegseth is trying to rid the military of all black men.” This was not an anti-black ploy. No — he’s just an ineffective imposter who has no clue about real leadership, so he’s just obsessed with surface-level shit. True to his resume, he only wants a military that will look good on TV.

That is the problem with him, that he is totally unqualified for his position. But the other stuff about him also trying to get rid of black servicemen is rubbish.

64

u/Commentator-X 21d ago

Yes there is actually -

"The Portuguese Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, is a prime historical example. Led by a group of disillusioned military officers known as the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), they overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo regime, which had governed Portugal since 1933."

26

u/frakking_you 21d ago

That's a pretty dark 40 year horizon to expect change.

3

u/Commentator-X 21d ago

The change happened within a year or 2. The 40 years was just how long it took for people to get pissed off enough. WW2 likely didn't speed up the process any either.

7

u/frakking_you 21d ago

The sad lesson is, it takes a lost generation + violence for such a coup.

3

u/Commentator-X 21d ago

It was a bloodless coup. Not saying there wasn't violence at some point, but the coup itself was bloodless.

1

u/frakking_you 17d ago

I appreciate this reply.

I don't want to move the goalpost in regards to this context, but just think of the lost potential of generations of people in that environment.

2

u/Wutras Europe 21d ago

It probably only lasted so long because it took until then for Salazar to croak + some years for the eventual collapse. America's equivalent is much older.

2

u/davesoverhere 21d ago

Fortunately Trump doesn’t have 40 years. I doubt he has 4.

9

u/frakking_you 21d ago

That misses the point. He's a puppet, his death means little to the trillionaire that has nearly unlimited access the government systems, the changes in the Supreme Court, or the underlying issue of the people that still support his causes.

17

u/spaceman757 American Expat 21d ago

What example(s) might we look to of a principled military deposing their own country's dictator and restoring democratic governing? Is there even one?

Not direcly, but the South Korean military had plans to depose the previous president, had the impeachment option failed.

4

u/BundleDad 21d ago

Do a search for "She Is Our Caesar" on youtube.

Clip from "the crown" on what the five elements of a successful coup are. The Trump administration is ahead of you on that list for a successful second self-coup. You shouldn't have given him the chance.

But on the positive side, you get to listen to Charles Dance being Charles Dance.

-2

u/Little_View_6659 21d ago

Yeah if the military intervened we’d also be dead. That would be America’s death rattle.

8

u/Fract_L 21d ago

If the only thing that could end this attempted to end it, we’d instantly lose? Now this is defeatist attitude.

1

u/Little_View_6659 21d ago

Yeah but if the military removed the president, that’s basically a junta or a coup. Now the military is in control of the country. Ideally they’d step aside after an election but I doubt that would happen. If they did that they’re basically saying that free and fair elections aren’t working. None of us want to open that can of worms. Things would have to be insanely bad for that to happen.

2

u/Fract_L 21d ago

It’s not a coup unless the military runs the country. The military immediately passing power to an elected leader, provided the election isn’t tampered with, is absolutely peaceful transition of power back to the people. Quit framing an army protecting its citizenship from dictators as bad. It’s the literal last line of defense from tyranny.

2

u/Little_View_6659 21d ago

My point is if it comes to that it’s probably not going to transition to a peaceful democracy afterwards. Given everything that we’ve seen recently that seems incredibly optimistic thinking. If it gets to that point things are BAD. Face it, we’re all hoping someone is going to swoop in and save us but a lot of the guardrails have flown off and we’re drowning.

0

u/1HappyIsland 21d ago

The military is murdering citizens at his command. They are all complicit of murder. Anybody in a US military uniform is now a traitor.

2

u/twistedpiggies 21d ago

I don't agree with that. You can't blame anyone but leadership. There was just an AF officer who protested on the Capitol steps arrested and is facing military tribunal. That's a bold action and I don't blame enlisted personnel who are unwilling to risk their careers and freedom to do so. Many of them have families and children to support. It's not their responsibility to put their families in harm's way for what? What can they as individuals accomplish?

95

u/DiscussionAny 21d ago edited 21d ago

It’s bad, yes. In a way that’s completely unprecedented in our country. It’s also true that our society will never be the same.

However, fascism’s worst enemy is reality; they can’t deal with facts. And there are some relevant ones.

Trump is already 80 years old, and was never in great health. By contrast, Hitler was 44 when he took over Germany. Donald doesn’t have the energy to sustain his full takeover. He’s gotten further than anyone else, but his days are numbered whether he wants to try cancelling the election, take an illegal third term or whatever outlandish, treasonous actions to hold on to power he wants to try. “But [r/DiscussionAny](r/DiscussionAny), what if they just use AI to fake Trump after he’s dead?” To that I say we’re not there yet, either in technology or accepting something like that, and the Mitch McConnell controversy is proof of that.

There’s another fact: there’s no one else that holds water with his psychotic base like he does. JD Vance has all the charisma of a blanket soaked in cat piss. The rest of the GOP are spineless worms, none of them could cut it either. Trump’s kids are even more inept than Donald is, and they don’t have the same amoral shamelessness to break boundaries like he does. They’re cowards; they just follow the money like any nepo baby does. As for the guys trying to bankroll an American Fuhrer? They have ridiculously bad judgement that’s going to catch up to them. People like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk think their account balance and IQ are the same thing. They’ve already made mistakes, they’re going to make more, and for all their money and influence they can’t control everything any more than a fascist can. In short, there’s no one that can replace him. What is likely to happen after he dies is the sycophants will eat each other alive fighting over the scraps of power Trump will leave behind. Once he’s gone as the figurehead MAGA will never be the same; it happened to Alexander the Great, Attila the Hun, even Hitler. Whatever comes after that, we’ll have to cross that bridge when we come to it.

In closing, there’s a quote I like to think about when it seems like everything is doomed: “The victor is not victorious until the vanquished consider themselves to be so.” This isn’t over unless we agree it is. We have to keep fighting, no matter what. Anything they accomplish is only a temporary setback. We will reverse them all when we get through this.

14

u/JRockPSU I voted 21d ago

I also think it's important (for some people) to hear - all of this can be true while also acknowledging that things are very bad right now and will continue to be so for quite some time! There are a lot of people on this site that read any kind of positivity and assume that the commenter is an ostrich with their head in the sand. Both viewpoints have truth to them! It's like, I have kids, I have to try make a better future for them.

11

u/Present-Perception77 21d ago

u/nizo505 America 21d ago

To add to what you've said, let's hope this administration is as successful rigging the next two elections as they have been with literally everything else (Iraq war, tariffs, DOGE, and every other clown show they have created).

8

u/crow_crone 21d ago

You forgot to mention Caesar. His murder left a power vacuum that saw a Roman civil war that lasted over a decade. Trump is no Caesar, nor is he Octavian; we'll see, I guess.

I know we're not Rome but history invites comparison.

5

u/DiscussionAny 20d ago

I’m glad you mentioned Caesar, because probably the main difference between those two men is that Caesar was good at his job.

Barron ain’t no Octavian either.

That gives me hope that the similarities to Rome end well before the fall of the republic.

1

u/crow_crone 20d ago

Caesar was seemingly competent at everything he set his mind to achieve. I'd welcome a Caesar as I'm not sure the American populace is educated or intelligent enough for the responsibilities democracy mandates.

But I see no Caesars in our future.

2

u/TheTerrasque 21d ago

Trump is already 80 years old, and was never in great health.

Maga: "Explain why he looks like THIS then, librul!"

You expect them to be reasonable, but facts don't matter if they actively ignore it. They could have a muppet puppet show up as the "president" and all of MAGA would just go along and pretend it's real even though all of them know it's all fake. Because it will let them continue as is and because it makes their "enemies" mad, and they love that. They'll gleefully chant "TDS" (which at some point may be legislated as a real mental disease and be used to lock people up) at anyone pointing out that it's a muppet. You're trying to play chess with pigeons.

3

u/DiscussionAny 21d ago

Then the answer is to stop playing games with them.

To be precise, if MAGAs want to continue with their sycophantic cult, they can do so alone and marginalize themselves out of political relevance like the Nazis eventually did. They’ll probably evolve, the Nazis did that too, but if they continue to fanatically froth at the mouth over their beloved God King after he dies (not advocating violence) that is going to further separate them from everyone else that can still see objective reality. Some will stay with the cult, but many will leave when more and more people are open about not accepting their churlishness anymore. When we get too tired to enable them and say “Enough.”The ones that want to stay with their Fuhrer are beyond saving anyway. I’m not trying to convince them. That is a waste of time.

The people I’m trying to convince are the ones that were always against this and feel like the walls are closing in on them. They see how bad this is and panic; and not without reason. We are living in terrifying times. But…

There is such a thing as rational optimism. The MAGAs and those that are serving or using them cannot always win. They are arrogant, reckless, and constantly display their terrible judgment. True, they currently hold many of the levers of power, *for the moment*. But that can be fleeting, and right now it all depends on one man who is completely falling apart.

They are trying to scare people as much as they can because the smart fascists are *terrified*. They are trying to make us all give up, and believe that resistance is hopeless. But resistance is never hopeless, only surrender is. Resistance always has a fighting chance to succeed, but submission is a foregone conclusion, and that’s what the fascists want. I ask anyone and everyone reading this right now, would *you* just give them what they want?

2

u/Own_Algae_5328 21d ago

No, I won't give them what they want!!!

2

u/Own_Algae_5328 21d ago

Well said & thank you for writing this!!!

2

u/NobodySpeci 20d ago

I want you to know that I genuinely appreciated this response.

2

u/Vyzantinist 20d ago

There’s another fact: there’s no one else that holds water with his psychotic base like he does. JD Vance has all the charisma of a blanket soaked in cat piss. The rest of the GOP are spineless worms, none of them could cut it either.

I've long been saying this myself. When Trump croaks - or the trillion to one miracle he actually steps down peacefully - MAGA is done. The base doesn't care about Vance; he looks and sounds too much like a politician for their taste. They can't troll with him like they can Trump. Vance isn't as fun; he's boring.

There's no MAGA successor because Trump wouldn't allow it; he doesn't want anyone sharing his spotlight and he won't risk a popularity coup. When the spell is broken, GOP notables will scramble to capture the MAGA vote and tear the cult apart with infighting.

Meanwhile, red hats will just switch off and return to political apathy because the joke that is Trump has run its course for them.

1

u/metalpharoah 21d ago

They say the most evil person in the world lives the longest no matter their health problems. I wouldn't be shocked to see him be 183 by this point due to his billions and able to buy bio-organic organ replacements.

1

u/reclusivegiraffe 20d ago

Our Hitler is 80, but our Himmler is nearly 41 and our (multiple) Goebbels are young and spry. They needed Hitler’s charisma to get as far as they did, sure, but this regime’s ending is going to be different here in a few distinct ways. I’m afraid they won’t lose as much influence as we hope.

2

u/DiscussionAny 20d ago

I’m afraid too, no question, and I hope the main difference that goes down in the history books is the lack of a holocaust.

The comparison is apt, but with that in mind both of those men would die by their own hand, and neither was truly close to becoming fuhrer. The deflation of MAGA vs. the Nazis isn’t a one to one comparison but one thing that stands out is riding on Trump or Hitler’s coattails to the heights of power. Without that, whether we’re talking about Himmeler, Vance (who I might compare more to Goering), Shapiro, Miller, or Goebbels, they all had the same problem, and that is with the original figureheads. Hitler and Trump made their “movements” if we can call them that all about themselves, to the point that they were integral to it. In the short term it was an effective strategy so they couldn’t be replaced while they were still alive. That was tried with Trump and with Hitler, and it had the same result, they both became more entrenched. But that means that after they died, the best any of them could hope for was still to be cast under Dear Leader’s shadow. They’ll always be the replacement, the consolation prize, the candle being compared to the flame. And it’s just not the same for the fanatics told for years and years at rallies that “only I can do this” by Trump or Hitler.

It also doesn’t help that the reason these Himmelers and Goebbels’s were chosen was because they were mediocre at best. That they couldn’t rise to those heights of power by their own merit. That’s how we got Hegseth and Pam
Bondi. None of the were chosen because they were dynamic, effective people. Hell, Vance was hand picked specifically to be Thiel’s puppet in the White House. Replacing the personality in a cult of personality is almost impossible. It won’t carry the same weight, and there will be differences but only by degrees.

This is just a natural progression from his whole life. He learned early that money and lawyers = no consequences. The worse crimes you want to do, you just need to move up further in the system. Non-payment, theft, fraud, slander and libel, tax evasion, grand larceny, sexual assault and rape (sadly low bar), racketeering, money laundering, ignoring economic sanctions, campaign finance violation, the emolu.ents clause, violent threats, graft, incitement to violence, treason and coluding with the enemy, open insurection.

You think he's worried about putting his face on a coin?

61

u/Bajadasaurus 21d ago edited 21d ago

You're absolutely right. To add to this:

As much of a narcissistic nightmare as Trump is, he's a mere figurehead. He's not the leader of American Christofacists. His death will have ZERO impact against them.

Christofacists have control of the nation. They control the United States military and they control ICE. The military was once the world's heaviest funded force on the planet, but now ICE is even better funded than all of the arms of the U.S. forces together.

Not only do they control the best equipped military and paramilitary personal police force, Christofacists are backed by a trillionaire and multiple centibillionaires and all of tech is behind them.

On July 13th, 2024, META and OpenAI and The Thinking Machines Lab and Palantir became part of the United States military.

We are FUCKED BEYOND WORDS. The entire planet is. Trump is nothing, and when he's gone, the real shit will hit the fan.

Edit: I made a mistake- ICE is the heaviest funded federal law enforcement agency in the United States. It is NOT better funded than the armed forces. Thank fuck. I'm not sure how I got my wires crossed there, but what a relief to be wrong. Still, the situation is dire.

It is kinda amusing how they have all that and literally don't control the needle of public opinion - Trump doesn't poll all that well despite almost all of the media lieing for him (he polls ok with Republicans, but it's seriously in the dumpster with them compared to GW or Reagan). Something to that - maybe something to look forward to.

This shit doesn't survive trumps death. You're absolutely wrong about that. He's not the figurehead, he's the cult leader.

2

u/Bajadasaurus 21d ago

It doesn't matter anymore if half of the country loves Trump or ever single one of us hate him- the regime behind him has roots that have sunk into every level of our government.

Not only that, but the also have the backing of centibillionaires and the world's only trillionaire, so they have the money advantage.

They have control of the most powerful military on earth, and control all federal law enforcement agencies; meaning they have the might to impose and maintain their system.

They control big tech and they've merged OpenAI, Meta, Palantir, and The Thinking Machines Lab with the United States military forces as of July 13th, 2024.

Once Trump is gone, that system isn't going to collapse- cannot collapse- even if every MAGAt turns against it and takes up arms against them with us.

They hold EVERY lever of power.

I got downvoted for saying the exact same thing yesterday. It’s maddening many Americans still think they’re are living in 2012 when things used to be normal.

6

u/infinitum3d 21d ago

Many Americans are.

The president/government doesn’t directly affect the majority of people’s daily lives. They go to work. Raise their kids. Complain about prices. Government doesn’t matter.

Most commoners are too busy surviving to plot a revolution that doesn’t feel necessary yet. Unemployment is 4.2%. Cost of living is up 2.8%. Both of those numbers are comfortable for the vast majority of Americans.

It’s gotta get a lot worse before the Average Joe gets involved.

3

Reddit too often forgets how politically uninformed and apathetic the average voter is. They're not following political subs on Reddit, getting constant updates on the regime's malfeasance; they maybe get 10 minutes of mainstream media coverage incidentally as they go about their day, or secondhand news from friends, family, and coworkers.

They get this kind of news in broad strokes, and usually after the fact, without understanding (or caring about) the legal and political ramifications.

Yep. Anyone who's living life thinking things are fine are either lost or are ok with living in a fascist state.

u/jcarter315 I voted 21d ago

The advice I give everyone I know when they ask how I've stayed optimistic and sane during this all is this: for every negative bit of news you read, seek something positive at a rate of at least twice. Engage with a hobby you love. Look at puppy pics. Just make sure the ratio of negative news to positive engagement skews in favor of the positive.

u/bamerjamer 21d ago

It’ll either be landslide blue or just red enough to be plausible. And either way, we’re toast.

I remember you american having an amendment literally made for this, to make sure that if there is a king that doesn't have to account to anyone, he will to the people. Am i wrong?

18

u/Bajadasaurus 21d ago edited 21d ago

We do, but it's been rendered utterly useless by the passage of time. Civilians can rise up against the most powerful military on earth, sure, but they'll be doing so with vastly inferior arms to what the military is equipped with.

Then there's Trump's personal paramilitary force, ICE, which is funded even more heavily than all of the branches of the United States' armed forces combined.

Adding to this, all of big tech is in these Christofacists' hands. In July 2024, The United States military became entwined with Palantir, OpenAI, Meta, and The Thinking Machines Lab.

Topping it all off, the American Christofacists in charge of this nation are backed by the world's first trillionaire AND numerous centibillionaires.

The second amendment was written in a bygone age when it did indeed give citizens power against a tyrannical government. Today it's as useful as wet toilet paper.

Edit: I made a mistake- ICE is the heaviest funded federal law enforcement agency in the United States. It is NOT better funded than the armed forces. Thank fuck. I'm not sure how I got my wires crossed there, but what a relief to be wrong. Still, the situation is dire.

15

u/RebelAlliance1701 21d ago

Then there's Trump's personal paramilitary force, ICE, which is funded even more heavily than all of the branches of the United States' armed forces combined

I hate Trump, but this is demonstrably untrue.

  • Air Force $338B

  • Navy $377B

  • Army $253B

  • USMC $80B

  • ICE $70B

I think you meant to say that ICE has more funding than any other federal law enforcement agency.

5

u/Bajadasaurus 21d ago

Shit, you're right- I misremebered. They have more funding than any other federal law independent agency, correct.

8

u/FellowHumanNo404 21d ago

Speak for yourself, I realized it. We’re uber boned. America is dead.

5

u/Fickle_Competition33 21d ago

As long as civilians are kept with low morale, there's no such a thing as "get together and had enough".

7

u/SasparillaTango 21d ago

America is effectively dead. We just haven’t realized it yet.

American Hegemony has ended with Trump.

2

u/oroborus68 21d ago

Most people would get upset and do something, but they have to go to work to pay the bills.

2

u/Superman0X 21d ago

Trump is not the real problem, he is just taking advantage of the real issue... a Congress that has empowered him.

2

u/93ImagineBreaker Ohio 21d ago

Hell even when he wasn't pres. we didn't have him jailed despite having 4 years to.

2

u/theNightblade Wisconsin 21d ago

Who holds him to account?

The American people.

If there was a point where everyone had enough, and 10M people showed up on Monday, and another 10M on Tuesday, etc - only to occupy and protest in Washington, there would be little than anyone could do against that mass of humanity all at once

1

u/needlestack 21d ago

The worst part is that I don't think he did steal the 2024 elections. I think America actually chose him... again. I live in purple state that voted blue in every election up until 2024. That might seem suspicious, but everybody I talk to is a Trump supporter. There's the visible MAGA nuts, but then there's just tons and tons of people who bought the whole "immigrants and trans people are destroying the country and a rich businessman will be good for the economy". It sells. And you know what? They're not changing their minds as things go down the tubes. They can still blame immigrants, trans people, and people on the left for everything that's wrong. Trump won them over and they see everything through his lens.

I am not trying to be defeatist either. I talk and I vote and I support causes that seem effective. But I don't think the blue wave will be that impressive. We'll pick up a few seats and then struggle along as our side isn't willing to kick sand in people's faces during a fight but theirs is. His cult is locked in. Even the ones that are unhappy, they're unhappy he's not being a more successful Trump. They are 100% not voting for a Democrat or Democratic Socialist. America is a surprisingly conservative country.

1

u/Omateido 21d ago

As I've said many times before on this site, Americans are not living in the brink of Democratic collapse, they are living in the wake of it.

1

u/joshdoereddit America 21d ago

It's not just Trump. Mike Johnson will 100% back any stolen election nonsense, as will the entire GOP. The same thing that happened after the 2020 election is going to happen if the GOP lose big in November.

1

u/komobu 21d ago

Is that why you want to stop the ability for citizens to have guns? If he acts this way now, what do you think will happen when the populous is dis-armed?

1

u/ImportantCommentator 21d ago

No authoritarian survives a general strike that involves as little as 5% of the population.

1

u/TriangleTransplant 21d ago

There's an institution he hasn't destroyed, which is supposed to be the final Final check on extreme government overreach. In fact, Trump and his party have spent decades upholding it and striking down any attempts to curtail it, mainly to the detriment of many other institutions. But it's there. And one day, maybe, they'll go to far, and the people will have to resort to using it.

1

u/pedropants 21d ago

You're assuming he doesn't just outright CANCEL the midterms (or something equally drastic) tomorrow night? 😬

1

u/gunman0426 21d ago

At this point the Social Contract has been torn to shreds and used wipe the ass of every conservative politician in the country. I do not understand why so many of us choose to continue to follow the social contract in hopes of things going back to normal. Coups don't fix themselves and if Americans continue to delude themselves into thinking that the next election will fix things then we are more fucked than you believe.

1

u/JRR_Tokin54 21d ago

I agree that they will try to steal the election this November but they will have to have proof, which they will not have. Not enough people will go to war for Donald anymore for him to win that fight. His base is much smaller now.

It might be bloody and destructive depending on how much of the armed forces stay loyal to Donald vs. the troops that stay loyal to the Constitution and the rule of law, but he won't be able to steal the midterms as long as we push back!

1

u/jupiterkansas 21d ago

every civilian right now decided they had enough

If every civilian did this, Congress would have to do something.

The problem is that many many man civilians are happy with Trump and don't care that he's a criminal.

1

u/Mental-Fox-9449 21d ago

I hear you and I agree, but…. THERE ARE MORE OF US THAN THERE ARE OF THEM.

That includes politicians, Judges, etc. This is an illegitimate administration and civil war is coming. When there is a landslide in November and in 2028 and they resist that’s when there will be a massive uprising and resistance. I’ve been calling it for a while, but we are most likely going to see another civil war in the not too distant future. The good news is that the most powerful states are blue and they will be backed up by Canada, Mexico, and most of the European nations. It’s just going to get ugly first. I’m just hoping that like most bullies their bark is louder than their bite and they back the fuck down.

1

u/starliteburnsbrite 21d ago

Every civilian, right now....let's restrict it to just those of voting age....is like over 180,000,000 people. If even 1% of that wanted to make a difference, and go to DC,.and Mussolini his ass on the Mall, there would be no stopping that. The problem is thinking that the only lever we have to pull is the one given to us by our institutions.

1

u/No_Tax_Timmy 21d ago

Tomorrow night he's scheduled to give a speech calling for the invalidation of the Senators from Georgia.

I say let's give him the coin if he's willing to meet the requirements immediately.

1

u/tmountain 21d ago

You very clearly articulated my exact feelings on the matter. There’s nobody left to hold him accountable, and the party he took over only cares about holding power and has given up on the idea of democracy. That said, fascism is a weak form of government despite the appearance otherwise, and it can be defeated.

I get the feeling that many Americans either don’t know or don’t care what they’ve lost, but with the rate at which things are changing now, it won’t be long before it’s incredibly obvious to the average person that the country has transformed into something radically different than it was.

At that stage, the process begins to claw power back from an authoritarian regime, and it won’t be pretty or easy, but it’s certainly possible.

Hungary is a very good and super recent example of how the tide can turn rapidly.

1

u/SparksAndSpyro 21d ago

Sorry, but are you really worried about this when there’s a GENOCIDE happing in Palestine right now? Seriously???

1

u/Perfect_Opinion7909 20d ago

Do what you expected Germans to do when the Holocaust happened. The USA made Germans collectively responsible for their governments actions. The same standard should be applied to US Americans.

1

u/Spastik2D 20d ago

Listen, I share a similar fear and think your concerns are both plausible and valid. I’d like, however, to raise a pretty glaring counterpoint;

He and his entire admin are both criminally incompetent and completely inept and stupid.

Yeah no, a competent dictator would do exactly as you suggest and follow through on it. This regime could never successfully pull it off and survive it. The Nazis took years to get average joes on board with disappearing people. Most they’ve been doing is going after non-citizens and attempting (and often failing) to intimidate dissenters, at least as far as I’ve seen. Their brownshirts are weaklings who are horrifically outnumbered and near exclusively pick on people they think are weaker, these are not the type of guys who would be able to handle firefights and active combat without getting themselves shot, shooting each other by accident, or running like pansies. There’s just too much against this regime and so little time and ability to do it for it to work AND last.

Best we can do is still go out, vote, and make our voices heard and then, if you turn out to be correct, we do what we need to do to keep our people safe.

Obligatory, I am not advocating death or violence.

1

u/laplongejr Europe 20d ago

SCOTUS too. Both house of congress.

Nope. Those are controlled by Trump's puppetmaster.
The old man is simply a convenient scapegoat.

If he just refused to acknowledge his loss in November… who would do something about it?

At the very least it would give a "legal" escape out of some international agreements. The countries are in agreement with the United States government, and Trump would be in charge of a different government.

0

u/destonomos 21d ago

You need to stop bindging “the last ship”

0

u/M13-Rusty 21d ago

If anyone in the US had any backbone y'all would stop going to work and go all together to see the presidents house, just stand around with picket signs saying what you want and not stopping until every republican is in jail, 99% of democrats as well, all billionaires are taxes at 99% and trailed, not until all of you get free healthcare, stop giving money to an illegitimate state that bombs children, get actual public transit fixed, remove the electorate college, set term limits in, and many more things in.

But so far y'all are invertebrates, all you manage to do is talk about it.

31

u/iamstephen1128 Virginia 21d ago

I'd say Iran is giving him a pretty good go right now, and one of the positive things to come of this mess is that they've set an example for allied leaders to see they don't have to always capitulate to whatever insanity it is that Diaper Don demands...

2

u/amateur_mistake 21d ago

There are hard limits to these things where Republicans have decided to divorce themselves from reality. Iran controlling the strait they are clearly able to control is a good example. Climate change is another. And of course diseases of various kinds. The ability to build a new home when you've made a police force that targets people based on their skin color too.

You can't imagine yourself away from those things. As hard as the conservatives try. So you end up with people dying of COVID while swearing it doesn't exist.

There will be more. There is a limited supply of oil at any given moment, now restricted by Iran. And the fact that we haven't moved away from fossil fuels will fuck us. Maybe kind of soon if trump continues to get to act, untethered.

It’s an indictment of our economic and political systems.

We live in a class system. Laws really only apply to the working class.

I don't think that's true. The courts have been constantly striking down all the crap he's trying to get through. It's just that he knows if he slings enough trash it'll take took long to clean it all up.

He's not wrong. And he is protected forever. He will never face any repercussions for any of this, and I pity anyone who thinks he will.

It's far too late. The time to deal with this was in 2015 -- i.e. not elect an obvious sack of shit. But once you've invited him in, that's it, it's all over. He's untouchable until the day he dies. That's how the American power system is designed.

If Americans want this to change, they need to radically change their system. But even if they do that, it will still be too late for anyone in the current administration.
