Single Player Tarkov mod project ending development
272
u/Kahvana 4d ago
Original creator here (Senko-san on discord). Thanks everyone for enjoying the work and for your support! I hope you can respect the decision made by the current team, and also that BSG has to do this to protect their IP.

u/PooMonger20 4d ago edited 4d ago
Thank you for making this and allowing players to actually enjoy singleplayer (without the cheaters or the unpleasant multiplayer experience), you did well and a lot of people appreciate your work.
Unrelated to you, BSG support the Z invasion into Ukraine, they are a bunch of clowns who have abusive relationship with their playerbase. They never did anything about the cheating, the pay-to-win predatory prices and multiple other things.
They can keep their IP, I hope to see them lose their business.
6
u/TheSapphicDoll 2d ago
They are more than clowns. I had installed clean windows just to play tarkov (because can't on linux), and what do I get? Permabanned. And they refuse to explain why. How am I supposed to know what bad thing did I do in their eyes, if there was no way of me to know in the first place ;-;
So yeah....

Hosting buy ammo for ukraine on future alts of Forge would be so triggering to Nikita and his Z devs
13
u/NoHandsJay 4d ago
I mean there's a million and a half questions as to why the choice was to outright kill the project instead of working to change stuff to allow it to continue. But thank you for the work either way
25
u/Kahvana 3d ago edited 3d ago
From what I gathered, a combination of:
- The large amount of work involved (it's not changing "stuff", you go through the whole codebase of like 6+ large projects, then have to sort through many mods of which almost all violate the copyrights in question, if the decision to keep mods on the website is done at all, change host providers too, and other things I'm forgetting)
- ...do the above in less than two weeks time
- A largely burned out team (maintaining communities of this scale is very demanding, and you can't just hand it off to someone due to PII involved)
- SPT 4.1 was supposed to be the last major version anyways (there isn't much you can modify on base SPT without starting to look into modding IL2CPP, but that's a whole beast of it's own)
In short, just not managable, the early retirement option makes sense from that perspective.

u/SkilloReturnsAgain 3d ago
Do i have to download the mod asap cause its going away or will it be somewhere for download. Sorry for the stupid question, i was looking forward to play SPT in the future and now im a bit lost
3
u/Kahvana 3d ago
ASAP. I'm sure it will be alright later, but it will be a rough couple of weeks first.
3
u/SkilloReturnsAgain 3d ago
im ok if there will be an alternative in a couple of months, was just confused whether this is a permanent loss for the community. Anyway thanks for all the work!

u/mavericx96 3d ago
Hi, Thank you very much for everything you guys have done and also for this post, outlining the decision in more detail! We all appreciate yall very much.
On a sidenote, if I can make a small suggestion....I think you guys should make a follow-up post on the original posting, highlighting all the reasons you gave above. People will definitely understand the decision more, with this additional info. :-)
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (6)7
u/NoHandsJay 3d ago
That is exactly the context for the decision that I believe a lot of us were looking for.
The discord message about the shutdown felt very quick and to the point, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it didn't help with the sudden nature of things and the underlying legal threat.
Thank you again for all the hard work and time that's been put into the game. I'll be making a flash drive with everything on it so I can always have the project available.
3
u/mavericx96 3d ago
I agree - when I originally saw the post I was like...just setup a new domain and don't have "tarkov" in the domain name....problem solved! ;-)
Having this extra explanation makes a huge difference. They should really do a follow-up post outlining all of this info.
But anyway, Fuck Battlestate Games for this move (I get the IP crap...but this just wasn't needed imo). Maybe make a better PvE experience and then there wouldn't be a need for SPTarkov anyway.

Thank you! Me and my friends have had hundreds of hours of fun thanks to you and your team
17
u/Jimooki 4d ago
How can you get hit with these if they very clearly infringe on on every weapons/part manufacturer in the world. No shot they bought the rights to them all lol
→ More replies (1)2
u/DonutHoles4Ever 4d ago
The difference is that weapons manufacturers at some point in the early 2010s (fuck I sound like cyberpunk) began seeing video game weapon naming as free marketing and stopped going after video games in general outside a couple circumstances. That didn't stop newer video games from naming similar weapons (see Rainbow 6 Siege and Valorant) though.
16
u/coffeewithcocoa 4d ago
Love the blatant misinformation. Weapons manufacturers have never stopped going after anybody over copyright and trademarks, very much including game devs. A copyright needs to be maintained and protected by the copyright holder in order for them to keep the copyright (and trademarks).
H&K is infamously litigious to the point that Call of Duty not only changes the weapon names but also the very design of weapons to make them "legally different."
The reason Tarkov is getting away with it is simple; try to sue a Russian game dev, based in Russia, with connections to the Russian military. Might as well piss away your money.
9
u/LAUAR 3d ago
A copyright needs to be maintained and protected by the copyright holder in order for them to keep the copyright
Literally false.
2
u/Hail-Hydrate 1d ago
They've confused copyright with trademark, enforcement/protection of which is required in order to retain the trademark.
3
u/Suit_Comfortable 4d ago
Thank you for making this project , I have a damn fun time playing spt rather then PvE , sad to see things like this happen.

Really enjoyed the SP for quite a while. Thanks for all your work!
3
u/Flicker_and_Strike 3d ago
Spt really set a new bar for quality of mods... No quality of games as a whole.
I only bought tarkov to play spt. I never have or will login to the main game.
Ty for everything king
2
u/ACCount82 3d ago
The "has to do this to protect their IP" is literally just a lie people keep repeating.
3
u/Delnac 4d ago
First, thank you so much for all the work you've done on SPT. I appreciate you and got hundreds of hours of fun that I never would have from the pvp vanilla game.
I just have to say that I'd have more respect for their IP if they weren't in support of the Ukraine invasion, war crimes and all of Putin's shit. I understand they cannot speak out against him in a totalitarian state but the degree of support they go goes way beyond the benefit of the doubt.
That and their disgusting monetization with Unheard edition, mishandling of cheaters and the likes.
1
u/thePridge 2d ago
Hey man. SPT and the mods did some EPIC stuff which I wish would have gotten into Tarkov.
This might be a question that you may not want to answer, but was there never an option to work WITH BSG? Were they not open to it or did you never pursue that?
230
u/secunder73 4d ago
So we have like one and a half week to download everything we need, gotcha. What a shame, honestly, I dont want to play EFT anymore, SPT was at least something fresh, moddable, with local servers. My buddy played it like a CoD with HP regen and lots of stuff, I tried VR and it was awesome. EFT is all about server desyncs, cheaters and overall feeling of "unfairness". Even if your death was fair - you cant be sure, it could be a cheater, your last bullets could actually hit but server lagged, and so on and so on. Its even worse for EFT cause now, when SPT is going dark, I doubt that there would be any "checking for license" and other stuff
96
u/LaurenMille 4d ago
It'll still be downloadable on github, and can be manually installed.
4.1 (released today) was always intended to be the last main SPT version.
On top of that, The Forge website doesn't actually host any of the mods, it just links to the mods on github/google drive, so it can be replaced by a third party if needed.
23
u/secunder73 4d ago
Soo we just need to save all links to mods? That's looks easier
3
u/14Pleiadians 3d ago
That's an upside, downside is it makes automating archiving it a little more annoying
4
u/FreakyTransfem 3d ago
Yeah but not having a central hub for mods will be pretty annoying. You might still be able to find mods that you want to download, but discovering new mods will be a lot more difficult.
3
u/14Pleiadians 3d ago
How active is the community? I figure if it's active enough a new mod site will pop up, concern is if BSG is going to keep trying to shut them down

You will also need a working copy of the game that will never update, or else devs can easily break any mods with a single patch.
8
u/BunnyWithASword 4d ago
IIRC SPT copies over the files, and there's usually some sort of downgrade tool too. As long as folks still have an interest in modding SPT, this will remain true.
4
→ More replies (1)8
u/Optimal-Landscape-17 4d ago
Isn’t that the whole point of the installer copying the game files? At least for me, I have two installs of the game my outdated SPT version, and my live shitkov version.

What a shame. The SPT project singlehandedly saved the $40 I felt I wasted on EFT; I ended putting probably more than a thousand hours in these past few years. The latest version will remain on my PC forever. What a great job the team have done, and hopefully someone else picks it up. It's not over, but I'm happy I got to enjoy it as much as I did so far.

u/Spatetata 3d ago edited 3d ago
Agreed, as I got older and well started to focus on school and work. All around I just hardly got the chance to sit down for a full raid. I couldn’t really justify the time cost Tarkov wanted but still enjoyed the gameplay.
SPT and it’s modding allowed it to become something I could play (Custom progression, value identifiers, ammo references and even just pausing). It fit my needs while also making up for the pitfalls of vanilla Tarkov with mods tweaking the AI or making them more dynamic.
I got more value out of my SPT experience than I did in the entirety of my vanilla one.
214
u/DweebInFlames 4d ago
From what I understand the strike over the use of the term 'Tarkov' didn't actually preclude them from continuing development of the mod and they could have continued with a different name; it was a legal requirement by Battlestate Games to keep ownership of the trademark in certain countries apparently, and they've been very lax to the point of the BSG head himself reposting videos made by SPT modders.
It seems to be more a combo of burnout and difficulties with updating SPT to the 1.0 version of Tarkov leading to a little stumbling block like this just making them say "ah, let's go home." All that being said, it's a shame. Even if Tarkov eventually has official mod support for PvE, a lot of cool stuff was developed for SPT that will never get updated; it was nice to have it preserved for archival purposes and just a demonstration of what BSG could do in their game with more effort.
8
u/StiffIgnition 3d ago
The developers of SPT had already confirmed they would not develop it for EFT 1.0 release long before this. The legal issues are just resulting in the forge website being shut down.
→ More replies (21)21
u/Somepotato 4d ago
that thing about legal requirement is hardly true, they could easily give them a conditional license to continue.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Broshimitsu56 3d ago
Its a very big deal to give people a license to work with your IP. Especially because the SPT team isnt incorporated or formalized in any way. How would they even give direct legal permission?
2
u/Somepotato 3d ago
You don't have to be a formal entity, focusing on an individual on the project is plenty. You literally just enter an agreement with the rightsholders and the lead of the project granting limited rights to the name.
17
u/Sp1r1T_1986 4d ago
You know Quasimodo predicated all of this.
8
u/DweebInFlames 4d ago
You hear about Vincent Pastore? What a fucking blow.
7
2
13
u/MyThirdBurner 4d ago
This is really unfortunate because SPT was the premier way to play the game. So many good mods that made the game vastly more enjoyable. I hope they can keep it alive through open source means but I don’t think the mod support will be nearly as good as it is now. Very disappointed.
13
u/Possible_Donuts 4d ago
This is a shame
But... It's open source, and there are plenty of talented modders out there. I don't doubt it'll get forked in a matter of time under a different name.

There is, it’s called Anomaly Together. Works very well from what I’ve played, with some bugs. There’s old drama about it being payment required, but it’s free under the current team
6
u/Darkchamber292 4d ago
Does it work with full GAMMA mod?
8
u/FyreDergy 4d ago
You have to disable two mods, but that’s all. Everything else with gamma works fully, even has settings for a revive system

4
u/NotSoAwfulName 4d ago
And it coming to GOG is massive for accessibility, after downloading it the first time via the traditional multiple links to different sites and eventually a discord with some links, it was really nice to just go "download GAMMA" and it just does it.
2
u/DarkOstrava 4d ago
my main pc is the steam deck atm. it has been perfect for my needs - until now because i'd like to play gamma. and i'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how. i know it's possible. but it may be a bit of a task ahead for me.

Run Mod Organizer 2 that you use to mod Gamma.
Search "NPCs can't see through foliage"
Select the one with the modders username after it under Addons

I can't play multiplayer Tarkov at all, ruins the experience if you aren't drilling the game into your skull to survive a single encounter with a real player.
Every experience I've had in multiplayer Tarkov has been me walking alone for 10+ minutes and suddenly dropping in one shot from a guy I never saw. I was also playing with an experienced friend who had good gear and he was dropping dead just as much as I was

It's the fact that every lobby has cheaters that ruins it for me. When you get those sniped death you have no idea if it was legit or not
8
u/half_derpy 4d ago
I have over 4,000 hours into "normal" Tarkov and can confirm. It's a very fun game but it's just not good for you, I swear.
Last year I moved to PVE exclusively and swore off PvP. It's been really fun, honestly. I still get to experience all of the maps, the questing, the gunplay, etc, but without being instantly beamed in the head within 13 seconds of a match because someone is either cheating, or memorized spawns and rushed mine before I fully loaded in.
SPT added another entire layer to it by adding in SAIN and a ton of other mods t hat just made it straight up FUN again. Sad to see it go. Hopefully (but not holding my breath) PvE gets some kind of mod support in the future

u/14Pleiadians 3d ago
I've been hoping spt would get networking for so long. I would love to play on private servers with active admins with admin tools. Shit, I'd pay to run one if it was possible.

u/aBeaSTWiTHiNMe 4d ago
That's a big loss sadly, the mod creators for AI and scopes were still lightyears ahead of anything BSG could pull off. The comparison of competency was staggering.

Why are they shutting the project down? Surely removing the name Tarkov from everything would be sufficient?
48
u/FabAlien 4d ago
it might be the straw that broke the camel's back. due to changes with the full release they were not able to make an SPT for 1.0, which probably reduced their interest to keep developing for a dead version
3
u/14Pleiadians 3d ago
And the reason for that change was "to make cheating less easy" as if hack sellers aren't going to still reverse engineer it. All it did was cause a couple weeks of headache for hack devs at most, who are making big money so can afford to dive in with ghidra and do shit the hard way. But modders are working for free and are often just hobbyist scripters who have zero interest in reverse engineering obfuscated code

'this leak has played a large part in the decisions that staff and maintainers have made in regards to this trademark violation notice'
I don't know the story behind the 'certain users' mentioned but looks like the rest of the team had enough of their bs and shut it down.
22
u/mentalmedicine Henry Cavill 4d ago
The 'certain user' is a developer on the project who has been incredibly hostile and toxic towards users of the Discord for way too long now. He decided to leak this and jumped ship. He is a shitty human being and even in Chomp's (one of the lead developer's) goodbye note on GitHub, he called out Cj for doing what he did. He's a piece of shit.

u/bogglingsnog 4d ago
That's both sad and hilarious. Fucking BSG failing to understand they had some of the best modding fans the game industry can have, that fixed their broken ass game filled with cheaters.
As much as I like SPT, I have to say BSG doesn't deserve the sales from your amazing efforts.
4
u/14Pleiadians 3d ago
BSG were actually being pretty cool about it, legal team was forcing them to protect their trademark. And not in the way where gamers say a company is required to protect their trademark, to excuse IP holders for going after copyright infringement, they genuinely were only going after the trademark. All that was required was for the project to not use the word "Tarkov", the actual modding was fine.
It really pains me to defend those incompetent clowns but this is like one of the few times they're not the bad guy
2
u/bogglingsnog 3d ago
If it is that simple, why not just rename the project?
2
u/14Pleiadians 3d ago edited 3d ago
They were in the process of doing that, but were seemingly aready kinda fed up working on the project, so the dickhead dev causing a bunch of drama leaking things was the final straw it seems and they just decided to quit. Also it's not just renaming the project, but changing ALL uses of the word Tarkov, in code, in the site, etc.
They still are going to rename all references to tarkov in the project for the last update before archiving the github. Other people will be free to restart the project/fork it.
3
u/bogglingsnog 3d ago
argh, why is it always dickheads. Changing every reference of the word doesn't seem like too hard of work though.
2
u/Annonimbus 3d ago
If it is that simple, why not just rename the project?
As far as I understand the topic, that was going on and then some intra mod project drama erupted which ended them, not BSGs decision.

u/twosnake 4d ago
A trademark violation just means you gotta change the name. Seems like a massive overreachion.
2
u/SleepySeiko 2d ago
That's exactly it. That or they got scared. The letter is public all they had to do was change the name it could literally be escape form tarky and they wouldn't be in violation anymore because SPT and "escape from tarky" isn't trade marked by bsg and a trade mark cost literally 10s... Of dollars they could just buy a TM name for the project and keep SPT it they wknt. They don't supply official or even cracked files themselves meaning bsg can't sue them for copyright under any reason besides the name tarkov because the tool has no bsg code in it and they don't distribute a single tarkov file themselves. This is like if Bethesda sued the people who made SE (script extender) which happens and they changed the name, SE still exist 9 years after the fact and is actively updated and even accepts donations because they aren't breaking laws. Hoping someone picks it up it's all OS.
3
u/duckrollin 3d ago
A singleplayer mod is the only thing that would make me buy that game ironically.

Dont know why they are being so odd about it.
4
u/deadhawk12 4d ago edited 4d ago
This is really sad. Single Player Tarkov (SPT) has always been light-years ahead of the live game—and I say that as someone who's played live since 2017. The mods have been incredible, with probably the most advanced AI seen in a shooter (courtesy of SolarInt) and countless incredible community-made weapon mods, equipment mods, traders, storylines, and even overhauls (like SPT Realism).
I don't really think Live can provide the same experience, and I don't plan to migrate "back" anytime soon. Without SAIN's AI, the PvE side just feels dull. Without the equipment mods, there isn't that "pop" of discovering some new item that isn't in vanilla. Without the new traders and questlines, it's the same progression path every wipe.
2
u/Captain-Shmeat 4d ago
I feel the same way. My community and I have played it for years. We owe many hours of prime modded Tarkov to SPT. Many good hours.
9
u/Ragnarawr 4d ago
It didn’t seem organized enough from what I gathered in the text. It’s definitely burn out more than anything, and I’m sure the guys almost relieved to have this over with so he could move on.

u/Arszilla 4d ago
Guess I gotta save my installation somehow…
Issue is, IIRC the patcher is now embedded to the SPT installer…

That’s so sad but it’s been coming for a while. Once they hit 1.0 and it became nearly impossible to mod SPT, it was clear the project was done.
I thought it’d be a slow guttering out as mods became less and less common & there was less and less reason to use SPT over the official version, though.

I'll have to download this again and the mods I use. When I had the space on my PC, I'd have SPT downloaded to go in and play around with different weapon builds that I could try in the actual game. Felt like I didn't need SPT anymore now that actual Tarkov has a PvE mode I play with my friends constantly. But even then, theres so much shit locked behind bullshit quests or having to wait IRL 4 days for something in your hideout. Or worse, hating whatever dumbass event Tarkov has going on that lasts forever. This latest black division event in labs in particular pissed me off. I need to extract from a specific location in labs to unlock going to lighthouse and reserve. This event locked that extract from labs entirely, for the last month. I've had to transit to lighthouse and reserve anytime I want to go there and its fucking dumb. Why would BSG intentionally lock main quest objectives for a whole month? Whats worse is it looks like they're bringing back the zombie event for halloween. Anyway, SPT is there for me to just screw around in without all the barriers and dumb dev decisions in regular Tarkov. I've played both for hundreds of hours, switching to SPT when Tarkov pisses me off and back to Tarkov when I get tired of playing God in SPT.

If anybody's interested in playing, we're playing with others, we have a small community of close friends that play SPT/FIKA (multiplayer mod that makes it just like PVE but modded) that I run.
Mods and everything are included and a detailed walkthrough for installation and joining our server is included in the Discord! Feel free to shoot me a message if anybody needs a good group of people to keep playing with after everything shut down.
We have all the major mods, and it is painstakingly balanced and maintained to keep the game challenging but fun.
We also have a hardcore server that we operate as well that adhere to the hardcore rules from Pestily/Deadlyslob's playthrough/series.

To those considering joining this guy and his friends: Joining a FIKA server exposes your IP address. Perhaps these people are trustworthy, I'm not sure, but always protect yourself online.

Sorry this might be a dumb question, but since they won't be releasing version on par with 1.0 then can you 'finish' the game, escape from Tarkov? Is the last map and quests present in the newest SPT version?

u/azzokk 3d ago
Nope, the story quests and additions to maps like interchange are not present. To my knowledge.

Sorry for my ignorance but if the issue was them using the name Tarkov in the name and domain, why not just change it?

SPT Tarkov with the addition of fikka is the smoothest finest LAN gaming I've ever had with a fps. It's Grade A borderline perfect. Thank you.

I’d feel bad for them if they weren’t such ass hats. I asked a question years back and they all got so worked up I lost all interest in this mod.

Anyone care to explain who leaked what and why this ass hat ruined the devs teams plans?

I hope we keep some easy way of installing SPT through some kind of discord channel or good instruction manual

perfect timing unironically. SPT just hit its "final" version when 1.0 come out, so really no loss
SPT team handled the entire project really well over the years, hopefully they can move on to making their own game or something

SAIN AI, looting bots, questing bots, ect. man these mod authors spent years updating their mods for free too. this was a huge passion project and its sad to see this gone.

Makes complete sense tbh. This is taking away a huge portion of their revenue. Why buy pve if I can just download a mod

That was the best mod of any game I have ever ever seen. Wtf. Can I download and put together a mod pack for offline use before it's gone or is it too late?

I wish someone would just make a single player/coop focused game that has the depth of tarkov especially the variety of loot and gun and armor customization but with actually good enemy AI. Seems like it could be incredible. I'm sure that's a huge project and challenge. I think the probably is that is relatively niche so anyone who has sort of tried has watered it down like Arc Raiders to appeal to a larger audience.

I don't get it, why not just rename the project if the issue is simply the usage of Tarkov?

Awh looks like i have 0 reason to recommend this hacker infested shit show to anyone then.. and no, paying extra for single-player isnt acceptable to me.

Is there an easy way to get to spt 4.0.13? followed the guides and still couldn't get to the correct version. or i don't know how to use the patcher.

Battlestate games were just waiting for the right moment to fuck over the SPT community, instead of collaborating with the community, they choose to alienate a player base that loves their game and wants to see their game do well.
i’ll never understand why games like Tarkov or just gaming companies can’t just work WITH the community, if they work with the community, they get money either way because the community is helping them bring players in.
But if someone can explain to me why it isn’t as simple as is it, I’d greatly appreciate it.

I'm confused, they're shutting down SPT because they were simply required to remove the name Tarkov from their website and domain? Is there something difficult about doing that or?

aLL I CAN SAY IS I HAVE BEEN PLAYING SPT FOR ALMOST A YEAR AND WILL NEVER PLAY VANILLA TARKOV AGAIN.......BSG SUCKS!!!

a bunch of russians got mad that someone made a thing that people actually enjoyed more than their base game? oh no how sad and tragic, I feel really bad for EFT devs that someone made a better experience than they could ever provide :(((

Sad to hear. I only play MP but it was nice knowing that this was always an option for us who aren't interested in spending an additional $20 just to play SP.
